Easy timer

Louis Erard breaks new ground, bringing its fine watchmaking to the world of contemporary art. A new collaboration with a historic and rebellious figure in abstract art, Swiss artist Olivier Mosset. A black-on-black model with sparkling inlays. Limited edition of 178.

A manufacturer of fine mechanical timepieces. A contemporary artist, figure of 60's abstraction, gestures, objects, attitude. A meeting point between the two worlds lies somewhere between the Franches-Montagnes and Arizona, between Noirmont and Tucson. The result is more than a watch. An essay. A compendium. A few grams of polysemy, a bit of artist Olivier Mosset in a watch that strives not to become all art, but to keep telling the time.

This watch is a frontier. On one side, the land of signs; on the other, the land of watchmaking. This watch is an invitation to cross this frontier, a journey. Of course, Olivier Mosset doesn't just make art, he's also a biker. “Easy Rider” in the Jura. An artist in “Watchland”. Everything is black: case, bracelet, hands. A pure work of art, with no labels, no logos. Only the dial contrasts, decorated with silver glitter. The hands are batons, hour, minute, second, three times the same, same length, same width, same rounded ends. There's just one detail: the size of the hole that gives the direction, a minimalist reference, just enough to ensure that you don't lose the sense of reading altogether.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This watch is an abstraction. A minimalist geometric reinterpretation of the regulator, whose three hands - minute in the center, hour at the top, seconds at the bottom - are mechanically separated. Normally, this improves precision and legibility. In this case, though, it is rather a work of art.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The artist's codes have been translated into the watch's design. Geometric reduction. Chromatic reduction. Flat colour tints. It's all there. Then comes the dial, which takes up another aspect of Olivier Mosset's work. The artist loves street culture, including motorbikes and cars, all of which have a place in his work. He adapts and presents them like sculptures.

This watch evokes the look and feel of an automobile body with its metallic paint, black and glittering dial. This collaboration was initiated by Manuel Emch, director of Louis Erard and a keen connoisseur of contemporary art, of which Olivier Mosset is a leading figure since his participation in the B.M.P.T group - founded in Paris in December 1966 by Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier and Niele Toroni. Olivier Mosset had never designed an object, and certainly never a watch. But when Manuel Emch suggested this project, he let himself be drawn in, with amusement and a touch of sentiment.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

After all, he grew up in the Val-de-Ruz, in the watchmaking heartland of the canton of Neuchâtel, and his grandfather is linked to the history of Ébauches SA: "Time is a rather complex matter." For the rest, Olivier Mosset relies on his biker credentials: "What amuses me about watches is their accessory aspect - a watch is useless today. It reminds me of the scene in “Easy Rider”, when they've just bought their bikes and are about to leave, Peter Fonda takes off his watch and throws it away." He adds, in conclusion: "It's in the collection that this collaboration makes sense."

Erected as a work of art, each of the 178 timepieces comes with a red seal bearing the words "work of art - do not wear". Two interchangeable bracelets complete the case, one signed by the artist. Shaking up the codes of watchmaking is the direction taken by Louis Erard through its artistic collaborations, which delight collectors and contemporary art lovers the world over.

With Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Olivier Mosset, the watchmaking brand continues its initiatory journey. Other collaborations are to come, involving artists, craftsmen and independent watchmakers. Always limited to 178 pieces.

ABOUT Olivier Mosset

Olivier Mosset was born in Bern in 1944 and entered the art world in the early 1960s. He worked as an assistant to Jean Tinguely and then Daniel Spoerri. He arrived in Paris in 1963 and began to question the meaning of art and the role of the artist and took up painting. At first, Olivier Mosset painted small formats with the letter "A". Then came some of his emblematic motifs, including a black circle on a white background, which he painted 200 times between 1966 and 1974, his way of reaching degree zero in painting.

HUBLOT - MP-10 Tourbillon Weight Energy System Titanium Edition

HUBLOTManufacture Piece MP-10 Tourbillon Weight Energy System Titanium Limited Edition 2024

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

MP-10 TOURBILLON WEIGHT ENERGY SYSTEM TITANIUM:  HUBLOT OPENS A DOOR TO THE FUTURE OF WATCHMAKING

The Manufacture's tenth MP revisits the fundamentals of watchmaking: no dial, hands or oscillating weight, instead a roller display, a circular power reserve and an inclined tourbillon automatic winding by two linear weights.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The announcement of a new Manufacture Piece (MP) is always eagerly awaited at Hublot. This MP-10 Tourbillon Weight Energy System Titanium will be no exception. The piece is immediately arresting. With its rounded angles, sleek design and sapphire crystal of an unparalleled complexity, it houses a movement which is no less sophisticated. A fusion of form and substance. The mechanical and aesthetic power are inseparable – one of the key concepts guiding the MP collections.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And at the point where they intersect, the Manufacture offers a bold reinvention of the classic watchmaking complications. These are avant-garde pieces which are resolutely disruptive in their movement, display and complications. But they are neither concepts nor exercises in style.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Like all the other MPs, the MP-10 Tourbillon Weight Energy System Titanium is a complete, accomplished and practical watch that will soon adorn the wrists of a select few collectors.

Limited to 50 pieces

Instinctively, we seek to characterise the piece in the time-honoured way... Firstly through the figures, which make for impressive reading: 592 components, 5 years of R&D, 2 linear weights, 1 inclined tourbillon, a circular power reserve, for a model to be produced in a limited edition of just 50 pieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Next, its indications. Here, things get a little more complicated: The MP-10 has no hands. In their place are four constantly rotating displays: the hours and minutes in the upper third of the dial, combined with an invisible magnifying glass; the circular power reserve in the central third, with a very clear green zone and red zone; and the seconds in the lower third which are indicated directly on the tourbillon cage. It is made from monobloc aluminium, suspended and inclined, and a patent application is pending for this unique mechanical configuration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The piece has no dial: Hublot has fused the calibre with the dial. The movement is the face and soul of the watch. The gaze is drawn directly to the mechanism to read the time. The MP-10 features a highly architectural design and a particularly expressive movement built around volume and depth.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Yet, this in no way interferes with reading. Instead, it makes it simpler. The time is read from top to bottom, fluidly and naturally. The power reserve is particularly expressive, with a two-tone disc (red and green) set coaxially to the hours and minutes.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This design eliminates the traditional space constraints, which are usually dictated by a central display in a horizontal plane. The MP-10 can be easily read vertically: hours, minutes, power reserve then seconds. The movement of the eye is fluid and natural. The indications are aligned. They share the same white lacquer typography on black aluminium rollers. For each indication, the current time is read via a red triangular marker.

Reinventing automatic winding

Its winding system follows the same logic. A traditional movement is formed of a flat dial paired with an oscillating weight on the case-back side. However, this type of construction is incompatible with the  MP-10. The piece has no dial or hands, it is not flat, and it is read vertically. So, how is it wound?

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The engineers at Hublot retained the weight principle but verticalised it, just like the movement, then duplicated it. On either side of the central architecture sit two blocks of white gold, arranged on a vertical axis along which they are free to move.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To prevent them from colliding with the banking, Hublot developed a system of shock absorbers. These two vertical weights engage a rack and are able to wind the movement bidirectionally – an exclusive Hublot development for which a patent is also pending, that gives the MP-10 a power reserve of more than 48 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The watch is wound manually via the crown at 12 o'clock, while the time is set using a second crown nestled on the case-back side to preserve the fluidity of the design.

Unprecedented complexity

The exterior is finally on a level with the movement. While the case construction is simple (two pieces, middle and case-back in shiny micro-blasted titanium), the sapphire crystal atop it is Hublot's most complex to date, and combines inclined planes on three axes.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The same applies to the integrated rubber strap – also the most refined ever designed by the Manufacture. Until the next MP...

ArtyA – Purity Tourbillon QATAR Sapphire Edition

ArtyACOMPLICATION Purity Tourbillon QATAR Sapphire Edition - 2024

ArtyA pulls out all the stops for the
Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition 2024

For its participation in the 2024 edition of this beacon event,
ArtyA is showcasing two one-off creations inspired by two of its most sought-after timepieces of the moment.
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A dial, adorned with the colors emblematic of the State of Qatar, elegantly enhances the manufacture movement from the Geneva-based Maison.
The handcrafted leather strap completes the delicate, refined tone-on-tone color scheme.

The celebrated Purity manufacture movement

The two unique timepieces presented today in Doha feature the two latest high-complication movements manufactured by the Swiss watchmaker: the Tiny Purity Tourbillon movement designed for the 39 mm sapphire case; and the Curvy Purity Tourbillon movement designed for the tonneau-shaped sapphire case.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Both movements, born of the Purity collection, have come to symbolize ArtyA's mastery and savoir-faire in the realm of intricate watch movements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The in-house caliber impresses with its performance, achieved through an oversized tourbillon – 18 mm in diameter and operating at 4Hz – driven by two parallel-mounted barrels. This considerable technical prowess, encapsulated in a mere 9 grams, ensures a power reserve of 72 hours. Beyond precision and reliability, the aesthetic appeal is equally compelling thanks to a fully skeletonized movement with the highest possible level of finishing, such as iron microblasting and hand-beveling.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Complementing these technical feats is a manufacture movement adorned with a watch face that is satin-finished and polished by hand. Chamfered and diamond-polished hour-markers enhance its legibility. The perfectly finished dial proudly displays the colors of Qatar, a welcoming land for ArtyA, as a tribute to the brand's friendly and fruitful collaboration with the emirate's retailer, Blue Salon. Already present alongside the renowned Mohammed Rasool Khoory & Sons in Abu Dhabi and Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons in Dubai, ArtyA now consolidates its prestigious presence in the Middle East with Blue Salon, based in Doha.

Sapphire mastery

These watch cases exhibit incredible scratch resistance due to the exceptional hardness of sapphire. Rated 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, sapphire is the third hardest mineral, surpassed only by diamond at a rating of 10 and moissanite at 9.5. This high level of hardness is why crafting a complete sapphire case to ArtyA's exacting standards is a time-consuming, intricate, and cost-intensive endeavor.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It also showcases ArtyA’s creativity in pushing the boundaries of watchmaking, merging the unblemished clarity of sapphire crystal with a bold, avant-garde aesthetic, creating timepieces that are not only durable but also artistically compelling.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Geneva watchmaking house, renowned for its wealth of experience and creative prowess, artfully plays with light and form to create captivating timepieces. Its mastery of sapphire has enabled the creation of watches in various shapes, from an elegant 39-mm round case to an original tonneau style with gracefully voluptuous curves. Each piece is a testament to the Maison’s ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with innovative design.

Hand-stitched artistry

For the Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition 2024, ArtyA called on the finest leatherworkers to work on two unique pieces, developed and produced exclusively for this special occasion. The guiding principle was to honor the host country in a modern and elegant manner. The result is an elegant and original strap in upcycled calfskin with a contemporary design and rich, deep colors, embodying a perfect blend of tradition and innovation.
