Ariadne Artiles makes a splash launching the new Oris El Hierro

ORIS Aquis El Hierro Limited Edition NEW

A deep calling

Ariadne Artiles makes a splash launching the new Oris El Hierro Limited Edition
At the beginning of June, Oris launched the El Hierro Limited Edition at a high-profile event that immersed specially invited guests, including Spanish model Ariadne Artiles, in both the new watch and the fascinating story behind it.

The watch is named after El Hierro, the most south-western of the Spanish-owned Canary Islands and the site of a submarine volcanic eruption that occurred in 2011. Through the El Hierro Limited Edition watch, Oris is supporting a research scholarship scheme run by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) at the Faculty of Marine Sciences at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

For the launch event, Oris hosted international and local journalists from watch and lifestyle publications, and special guests from the university and the council. Ariadne Artiles was born on Gran Canaria, and leant her support to the event as both a Canary Islander and an ardent supporter of marine conservation. ‘The ocean takes care of us,’ she said. ‘Let’s return the favour.’

Sales of the El Hierro Limited Edition will support the IEOs scholarship programme

The two-day event included a dive and an underwater sightseeing tour off the south coast of the island, which has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2000. The activities were spectacularly documented by the Spanish underwater photographer Francis Pérez, whose many awards include the gold medal he won at last year’s Our World Underwater international photography competition. Shots from the dive included images of Ariadne Artiles testing the El Hierro watch in the surroundings it was inspired by.

During the event, researcher and scientist Eugenio Fraile presented ‘Project Vulcano’ at the Centro de Interpretación Vulcanológica de El Hierro. Students benefitting from the IEO scholarships will take part in the project, which will work to protect the area’s unique marine ecosystem.

Oris is extremely proud to be involved in the El Hierro project. At the end of the event, Claudine Gertiser commented: El Hierro is a magical place and we have seen that the IEO is doing vital conservation work here. Oris is delighted to dedicate its latest limited edition diving watch to El Hierro and the work of the IEO.’
