ROGER DUBUIS – EXCALIBUR Dragon Monotourbillon MT Gold Edition

ROGER DUBUISEXCALIBUR Dragon Monotourbillon  MT Gold 42 Exclusive Boutique Edition 2024

 A Powerful Design:
The Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon

At the golden dawn of the Lunar New Year, Roger Dubuis ignites its tourbillon craftsmanship once more, delivering a bold flourish of creativity inspired by the Year of the Dragon. This legendary sign of the zodiac places strength in the ascendance and transforms time into an era of great power.

An emphatic moment to introduce the Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Just as the dragon is believed to rule the motions of water, Roger Dubuis has unleashed its own waves of watchmaking innovation, delivered through a design of emblematic freedom. From the aesthetics to the performance, this is a timepiece where expression takes over, and where the Maison’s unrestrained spirit is most beautifully brought to life.

Follow the dance, as we reveal complexity, artistry, and symbolism all in one Hyper Horology™ unveiling.

Awakening the Dragon

The Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon is a tribute to the Lunar New Year and encompasses the renowned Dragon traits of intelligence, charisma, and confidence. This has been achieved by depicting the fearless creature with an assured conceptual rhythm, leaving room for interpretation, and inviting the wearer to set their imagination free.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While the previous Excalibur Dragon released in 2020 delivered a true resemblance of the dragon’s mythical form, this new Monotourbillon takes a more abstract approach. After all, nothing in life is ever absolute!

With its usual commitment to excellence, Roger Dubuis has skilfully crafted the dragon using 27 individual pieces of pink gold – each embellished with black lacquer on the sides and polished on the top surface. In typically inventive style, the pieces are set on 25 different levels, producing a 3D vision that is full of volume and vitality.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Turn the watch over and the same flowing dragon appears – this time metallised on the inside of the caseback’s sapphire crystal. Precisely matching the view from the front, this stunning addition gives the dragon full power, no matter which side you are looking from.

A Calibre of Complexity

While the dragon reigns supreme in the aesthetics of this timepiece, Roger Dubuis has coupled the design with the authority of its Monotourbillon Calibre RD512SQ.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Invented in 1801 to compensate the effects of gravitational force, the tourbillon remains one of the most complex challenges in watchmaking. Still today, it is a true expression of horological art, with only a few skilled craftsmen able to build its intricate cage, containing the balance, spring, and escapement all inside.

As you might expect, Roger Dubuis has approached this famous mechanism in its own unique way – by displaying its signature monotourbillon within a skeletonized movement. Naturally, this makes the craftsmanship far more difficult to achieve, and requires dedicated skills that the Maison has sublimely mastered.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Even the way that Roger Dubuis makes skeletonized movements is more complicated than most. Since 2008, the Maison has been reinventing the craft by using skeletonization as a starting point of each design – rather than a consequence of it. This means even when carrying high complications like the tourbillon, the calibres are noticeable for their lightness and purity.

Reaching that result demands harmony across the entire integrated manufacture. All of the watchmakers and designers must work in perfect alignment, playing to each other’s strengths while understanding each other’s needs. It’s a balance of technical prowess and aesthetic excellence that requires coordinated teamwork in every detail.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Secondly, skeletonization also requires more time. To reduce the material inside the calibre, more hours of milling are needed, and more facetted surfaces are therefore produced, leading to even more hours for decoration. All this to give the watch its pure and uncluttered display and to give the designers more freedom to play with the watch’s aesthetics.

Finally, it is fascinating to note that Roger Dubuis only makes Flying Tourbillons. Unlike traditional versions, the Flying Tourbillon is only mounted on one side, with no supporting bridge on top. Again, more beautiful to look at, yet more difficult to create, because stability must be guaranteed. A challenge that the Geneva watchmaker has successfully achieved through a high-performing Flying Tourbillon built from 63 components.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The ultimate reward for this dynamic skeletonized approach is the Poinçon de Genève certification, one of the most demanding signatures in fine watchmaking. Along with provenance and reliability, it sets the benchmark for quality craftsmanship, whereby every component of the watch must be hand-decorated to the highest standard. In the RD512SQ Calibre, this philosophy of flawless and unique design can be seen across the sandblasted top surfaces, applied next to expertly polished angles.

The Wisdom of Materials

To master the forces surrounding the watch, the RD512SQ Calibre includes a lower tourbillon cage in non-magnetic titanium – twice lighter than stainless steel. Going even further, the upper tourbillon cage is produced in mirror-polished Cobalt Chrome – also non-magnetic – which enables the weight of the tourbillon to be reduced by 16%. As a result, the calibre shows a greater resistance to magnetic fields, while the power reserve is radically optimised to 72 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Sitting on the wrist, the 42 mm case of the watch is built from pink gold and is mounted with a robust brass flange, which itself has been given a pink gold galvanic treatment, along with indexes filled with black Super-LumiNova™.

For the black calf-skin leather strap, personal style is set free thanks to the versatile quick release system, which enables the strap to be switched in seconds.

Elaborate in Every Way

The Year of the Dragon arrives only once every 12 years. It is a rarity in a lifetime and a moment that deserves a timepiece befitting of its stature.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Limited to just 28 pieces, the Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon is Roger Dubuis’ powerful and unrivalled tribute to this auspicious occasion. It delivers an elaborate and inspiring vision of the mighty dragon, while furnishing the wearer with the finest example of modern tourbillon design.

A skilfully balanced creation, whereby performance and beauty are masterfully entwined.

ZENITH – DEFY Skyline Tourbillon Automatic

ZENITHDEFY Skyline Tourbillon Automatic 41mm - 2024

THE PERPETUAL MOTION OF STARS: ZENITH ELEVATES THE DEFY SKYLINE WITH A HIGH-FREQUENCY TOURBILLON

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A new star in the DEFY Skyline constellation is born. The ZENITH Manufacture incorporates a new automatic high-frequency tourbillon calibre into the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon, in two versions in steel and black ceramic.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The tourbillon mechanism has long been associated with the upper echelon of fine watchmaking; a testament to the technical prowess of the manufacture and the skilled watchmakers that bring these mechanical wonders to life. Originally conceived at the end of the 18th century to counteract the effects of gravity on the watch’s precision, ZENITH has given it its own modernistic spin to demonstrate the Manufacture’s unrivaled expertise in high-frequency precision across multiple movement types and functions as well as the edgy design of the DEFY collection – all in an execution suited for daily wear in any situation. Like all El Primero calibres, the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon’s movement operates at a high-frequency rate of 5Hz (36’000 VpH), ensuring optimal chronometric performance with a high resistance to shocks.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Housed in a faceted and highly geometric 41mm case and matching bracelet in either stainless steel or black ceramic, the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon melds the distinctively bold and architectural design of the DEFY Skyline with the mechanical animation of a tourbillon mechanism.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Like the core of a galaxy around which countless constellations are strewn, the central kinetic element of the DEFY Skyline is visible through an aperture on the dial’s lower portion. Fixed to a finely mirror-polished bridge with sharp bevels, the tourbillon cage takes on the shape of an open four-pointed star, with the same futuristic lines as those found in other DEFY references with tourbillon mechanisms.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Turning ceaselessly around its own axis, the tourbillon completes one revolution every 60 seconds. The case’s water-resistance of 10ATM (100 metres) further affirms the all-conditions endurance of the piece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The DEFY Skyline’s signature sunray-patterned metallic dial with an engraved starry sky pattern has been adapted specifically for the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon, to accentuate the high-frequency tourbillon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Either in blue for the steel version or black for the ceramic version, the mosaic of engraved four-pointed stars appear to radiate out of the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, expanding as they reach the outer perimeter of the dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The luminescent applied markers and hands further add contrast to the dial, with rhodium plated indices for the blue dial and rose gold plated indices for the black dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Powering the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon is the new El Primero 3630 automatic high-frequency manufacture calibre, with a power reserve of 60 hours. Mirroring the expansive decoration of the dial-side that emanates from the tourbillon, the Côtes de Genève stripes on the bridges are arranged in a sunray pattern that appear to dart out of the tourbillon. The open star-shaped rotor allows for an open view of the contemporary movement architecture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Like all DEFY Skyline models, the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon comes on a stainless steel or black ceramic bracelet, with a second strap in blue or black rubber with folding clasp supplied that can easily be switched using the case back’s quick strap-change mechanism requiring no tools.

The DEFY Skyline Tourbillon is available at ZENITH physical and online boutiques as well as authorized ZENITH retailers around the world.

ARNOLD & SON – ULTRATHIN TOURBILLON Skeleton Edition

ARNOLD & SONULTRATHIN TOURBILLON Skeleton Platinum/Red Gold Limited Edition - 2024

 The finesse of curves

With its graceful curves and wide apertures, Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton also stands out for its slimness. Its new case, with a diameter of 41.5 mm and a thickness of 8.4 mm, presents the flying tourbillon calibre in its purest expression.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton collection, adorned in red gold or platinum, is issued in two limited series featuring 28 watches apiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Arnold & Son continues its tour of the Ultrathin Tourbillon collection. The A&S8320 calibre unveils its curves, apertures and details within a 41.5 mm case in either red gold (5N) or platinum (PT 950), each released in a run of 28 timepieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Encased in this precious housing, Arnold & Son’s flying tourbillon stands out for its finesse and precision.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finesse, because at just 3.3 mm thick, it is one of the slimmest skeleton tourbillon calibres in existence. Precision, because this one-minute flying tourbillon is assembled with a variable-inertia balance for enhanced calibration stability.

Radiating originality

The purpose of a skeleton is to convey a message, be it geometric, generic or minimal.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton, the skeletonisation of the calibre reveals pronounced curves and numerous inflection points that are highlighted by an original finish.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On both the Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton Red Gold and Platinum, the bridges are treated with rose-gold PVD (4N) after being decorated with radiating Côtes de Genève stripes.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The flange around the calibre adopts this same finish, clearly revealing the Arnold & Son signature at 6 o’clock and enabling the off-centred white opal dial to be displayed in its purest form.

Golden carriage

At the heart of Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton beats the A&S8320 calibre, whose architecture and slimness are its principal protagonists. Designed without an upper bridge to minimise its thickness, the calibre is classed as a flying tourbillon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The variable-inertia balance with inertia blocks ensures more precise calibration over time. The slender triangular carriage is supported by a double arrow, which is actually a counterpoise.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The arrowhead on the staff of the escape wheel serves as a seconds pointer, as the carriage completes one rotation per minute.

Performance reserve

The changes to the tourbillon carriage and regulating organ give the A&S8320 calibre a power reserve of 100 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While this is a larger power reserve than for standard tourbillons, particularly slim ones, it is entirely in line with the performance regularly achieved by Arnold & Son calibres.
