The inlay in the unidirectional rotatable bezel with its distinctive luminous dot at the “12” is made of ultra-hard ceramic and is extremely scratch-resistant. The watch is topped with a scratch-resistant 2.5-mm-thick sapphire crystal. In combination with a screwed crown secured by lateral flanks and a screwed back, the M2 Seven Seas S can withstand an enormous pressure of 50 atmospheres.

Thanks to the “midsize” 40-mm format, this watch also fits comfortably on narrower wrists. Integrated lugs further improve the ergonomics.

A comfortable feel and a handsome appearance are assured by the dual-material strap, which has a rubber underside and an upper surface of impregnated leather with discreet green stitching. The practical folding clasp lets the wearer adjust the strap to the desired length quickly and without damaging the wristband.

A. Lange & Sohne – ZEITWERK 2022

A. Lange & Sohne ZEITWERK Platinum and Gold - 2022

The new ZEITWERK
The second generation of the digital watch with a mechanical heart

A. Lange & Söhne presents two new versions of the award-winning mechanical digital watch in platinum and pink gold. Thanks to the evolved calibre L043.6, the exceptional timepiece now has a power reserve doubled to 72 hours and offers even greater convenience. The revolutionary design concept has been subtly reworked as well, enhancing its expressive style. Even though the minute-by-minute progression of the large jumping numerals may seem to be moved by magic, it is precisely controlled by a reliable calibre with seven patents.

In 2009, A. Lange & Söhne presented the first ZEITWERK to the amazement of the world of horology. The unprecedented wristwatch concept features large jumping numerals for the hours and minutes as well as a constant-force escapement as a beat controller. To this very date, the clear, avant-garde display of time is peerless. It underscores the manufactory’s ambition to constantly redefine the limits of technical feasibility.

Company founder Walter Lange repeatedly urged the need “to never stand still”. Following this maxim, the watchmakers at A. Lange & Söhne regularly question conventional concepts and pursue new innovative approaches to promote the development of precision watchmaking.

Historic inspiration: from the five-minute to the one-minute rhythm

This innovative approach is closely intertwined with the tradition of our manufactory. For the ZEITWERK, the master watchmakers at A. Lange & Söhne took their inspiration from the famous five-minute clock at the Semper Opera House in Dresden. At the time, court clockmaker Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes was commissioned to create it. He was asked to develop a time display that would be easily legible even from the rearmost seats.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It was a challenge that forced Gutkaes to rethink the assignment. Contrary to all large-format clocks with hands, he opted for a revolutionary solution: a clock that displayed the time digitally in five-minute steps. In 1841, he completed the five-minute clock with his co-worker Ferdinand Adolph Lange.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The unusual idea behind this clock was transposed to the ZEITWERK, even though it switches five times more often than its source of inspiration, namely once per full minute.

Hours and minutes at a glance

The ZEITWERK has a patented mechanism with three jumping numeral discs that make a glance at the watch a special experience. The hours and minutes are displayed from left to right by large-format numerals that are 2.9 millimetres high and 2.3 millimetres wide. The harmonious arrangement on the curved time bridge and the size of the displays ensure superb legibility.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Additionally, this aesthetically original and technically elaborate display endows the dial with vibrancy and verve because the underlying mechanism switches the three numeral discs – one displays the hours, the other two display the units and the tens digits of the minutes – within fractions of a second.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The most exciting event happens at the top of the hour when all three numeral discs are simultaneously advanced by one increment. With this precise choreography, the moment becomes the event.

Mechanically digital: a contemporary complication

To create this lucid and innovative display, Lange’s designers questioned the conventional principles and rules of precision watchmaking afresh. This was necessary, because the challenge of fitting the mechanism in the limited dimensions of a wristwatch and at the same time providing enough energy to produce the synchronised switching steps was enormous.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Some key figures make this impressively clear: For instance, the hour ring with a diameter of 30.0 millimetres extends to the outer circumference of the movement. In addition, there are two discs – the tens-minute and units-minute discs.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Their diameters are 19.0 and 12.7 millimetres, respectively. Both discs are separated by a height difference of merely 0.2 millimetres, which calls for highly precise settings by the watchmaker.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“To switch the discs of the jumping numerals mechanism to forward on time every minute, the movement requires much more energy than a classic time display,” explains Anthony de Haas, Director of Product Development. “Not only are the numeral discs very heavy by watchmaking standards, but they also have to be quickly accelerated and braked again. This calls for considerably higher forces than the uniform rotation of a pair of hands of much less weight. The greatest amount of energy is needed at the top of the hour when the movement advances all three discs at the same time.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Also, the incremental step must be executed precisely after 60 seconds. This challenging operation is handled by the patented constant-force escapement. As a multitalented device, it even makes a further contribution: It assures that the movement is also powered by a uniform amount of force; this benefits rate stability.

The calibre L043.6 the second generation of a mechanical masterpiece

While these challenges were already intelligently mastered by the first-generation ZEITWERK, the new generation goes a step further with the refined calibre L043.6.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thanks to a patented barrel design with two mainsprings, it was possible to double the power reserve from 36 to 72 hours. Or, to express it with other numbers: When fully wound, the ZEITWERK now has sufficient energy to perform 4,320 minute jumps or, more precisely, 72 jumps with all three discs, 360 jumps with only two discs, and 3,888 jumps with only one disc.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Another improvement versus the predecessor model is the simplified setting of the hour. A pusher at four o’clock can now separately advance the display, which is particularly useful when the time zone changes during a trip. The pusher is an inverted type: Nothing happens when it is pressed but the display switches forward when the pusher is released.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The integration of a pusher for correcting the hour indication, first introduced in the ZEITWERK DATE, required considerable constructional effort. To enable the correction independently of the switching cycles of the time indication, a patented vertical clutch uncouples the hour ring from the jumping numerals mechanism each time the pusher is pressed. The setting of the minute indication in both directions is still performed with the crown at two o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In its second generation, the ZEITWERK also features an oscillation system with its own balance spring and patented beat-adjustment system. It oscillates with a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As with all of the manufactory’s calibres, the artisanal finissage of the 451-part movement complies with the most ambitious Lange standards. With a glance through the sapphire-crystal caseback, connoisseurs can admire the hand-engraved balance and escape-wheel cocks, the solarised winding wheels, the 59 jewels, and the intricate, straight-grained remontoir bridge that accommodates two recessed, screwed gold chatons.

Inimitable in design as well

Watch enthusiasts often refer to the dial as the face of a timepiece. It not only reflects the designers’ aesthetic perceptions but also the skills of the movement engineers. This applies in particular to the ZEITWERK: Its innovative technical concept is expressed by progressive design.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The most prominent element is the time bridge made of German silver. The material, traditionally used by A. Lange & Söhne for frame parts such as bridges and cocks, makes it clear that it is an integral component of the movement. In the new ZEITWERK, it was subtly reworked to make more room for the subsidiary seconds dial at six o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the scale of the power-reserve indicator on the opposite side, harmoniously positioned above the round of the time bridge, the last twelve hours are now marked in red to clearly indicate that the tension of the mainsprings is gradually waning.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sapphire bearing jewel for the ones- and tens-minute ring to the left of the two indications is a refined detail that also builds a bridge to the movement. In most cases, rubies are used for bearing jewels, but in this case, Lange’s watchmakers chose this colourless, transparent precious stone for aesthetic reasons.

Two noble colour variations

The new ZEITWERK has a case diameter of 41.9 millimetres and a height of 12.2 millimetres. It is available in two versions. It comes in pink gold with a black dial and a time bridge made of untreated German silver. The platinum edition has a rhodié dial made of solid silver.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The time bridge is black rhodiumed. Colour-matched hands round out the harmonious design. The pink-gold model has a black alligator leather strap while the platinum version is paired with a dark-brown alligator leather strap.

There is nothing ordinary about the yellow gold of this ultra-sophisticated model gleaming with a subtle honey shade that brings a touch of authenticity and reassurance. This watch belongs to the category of bi-material or two-tone watches, stainless steel and gold. Thus attired, its new La City case is perfect for daily wear while retaining a radiant touch. It is at once sporty yet not overly so, chic and casual, versatile as well as extremely comfortable. A token of modernity and non-conformity, Ripples is intended for both men and women to whom it brings undeniable poise and style.

Patek Philippe – Grand Complications Split-Seconds Monopusher Chronograph, Perpetual Calendar

Patek Philippe – Ref. 5373P-001 Grand Complications Split-Seconds Monopusher Chronograph, Perpetual Calendar Platinum 2022

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Split-Seconds Monopusher Chronograph with perpetual calendar A highly exclusive timepiece for left-handers and connoisseurs of rarities

Patek Philippe is extending the broad palette of its chronographs and grand complications with the addition of a new timepiece literally made for the right-hand wrists of left-handers. With this goal in mind, the manufacture reinterpreted one of its most refined timepieces: the Ref. 5372 Split-Seconds Monopusher Chronograph. The new Ref. 5373P-001 features a platinum case and modern looks that emphasize its sporty and contemporary style dial. This new model will be produced in small series, appealing especially to left-handers among the connoisseurs of elaborate mechanical movements and passionate watch collectors.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In 2005, Patek Philippe leveraged its know-how in the field of short-time measurement by launching a new initiative: the manufacture developed a complete series of chronograph movements with and without additional functions. All of them were designed and produced in-house. The starting signal was given by the manually wound caliber CHR 27-525 PS, the world’s thinnest column-wheel-controlled split-seconds chronograph movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The caliber CHR 27-525 PS Q launched in 2010 (with the same base movement plus an extremely thin calendar module) has a height of only 7.3 mm. It is the thinnest split-seconds chronograph movement with perpetual calendar ever produced by the manufacture. Since 2017, this exceptional caliber has been crafted in very small numbers in line with venerable watchmaking traditions. It ticks in a platinum watch with a blue sunburst dial (Ref. 5372P-001) or a rose gilt dial with a vertical satin finish (Ref. 5372P-010).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Inspired by a one-of-a-kind piece sold by Patek Philippe in 1927, a custom-made cushion-shaped split-seconds chronograph (movement No. 198 012), the manufacture has now converted the Ref. 5372 into a new version for left-handers – a genuine debut in the recent history of the maison in Geneva. The exclusive Ref. 5373P-001 combines a split-seconds chronograph with one of the most elaborate functions – the perpetual calendar which stands emblematically for the grand complications of Patek Philippe.

Inverted displays and operating elements

With a diameter of 38.3 mm, the platinum case has the same size as the Ref. 5372 but its crown (with an integrated chronograph monopusher) is at 9 o'clock and the split-seconds pusher occupies an unusual position at 8 o'clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It preserves its timeless elegance with the polished, concave bezel that creates the perfect transition to the slightly domed sapphire-crystal back, the recessed and satin-finished case flanks, and the delicately curved strap lugs that merge with the bars almost seamlessly.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The indications (counters and apertures) of the dial are rotated by 180°: the analog date at 12 o'clock, the subsidiary seconds at 3 o'clock, the moon phases at 6 o'clock and the 60-minute counter at 9 o'clock, complemented by the aperture displays for the day of the week and the month as well as the leap year cycle at 10:30 and the day/night indicator at 1:30. Patek

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Philippe
has also reworked the aesthetic appeal of the dial, endowing it with a charcoal-colored aspect and a vertical satin-finish; it is ingeniously animated by a black gradation to the periphery and the snailed ebony-black subsidiary dials. The indication of the time is based on applied Arabic numerals and faceted Dauphine hour and minute hands in white gold. The moon-phase display is extremely precise: it deviates from the actual lunar cycle by just one day every 122 years.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For crisp legibility, the three chronograph hands from the center – chronograph and split-seconds hands as well as the 60-minute counter hand at 9 o'clock – are varnished red. The three chronograph commands (Start, Stop, and Reset) are selected with the monopusher in the crown at 9 o'clock. Stopping lap times with the split-seconds hand (rattrapante) is handled with the rectangular pusher at 8 o'clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A sapphire- crystal display back (interchangeable with the solid-platinum back delivered with the watch) reveals the fantastic architecture of the caliber CHR 27-525 PS Q movement with its two column wheels that bear two polished caps in the typical Patek Philippe style. The bridges, decorated with Geneva striping, are carefully chamfered and the edges are polished. A focus is also on the elegance of the form parts and the bridges à l’ancienne. Their acute internal angles can only be completed by hand, which calls for considerable dexterity and many years of experience.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sporty looks and modern attitude of the dial also applies to the black calfskin strap with an embossed textile texture and red contrast seams. It is secured with a platinum fold-over clasp.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Like all of Patek Philippe’s platinum watches, the new Ref. 5373P-001 features a brilliant cut diamond in the caseband. As an exception for left-handers, it is set at 12 o'clock in this timepiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

From now on, this watch is the only remaining model with the caliber CHR 27-525 PS Q movement that was formerly available in the Ref. 5372P-001 and 5372P-010; both models have been retired from the collection.

An illustrious predecessor

Crafted in 1925-1926 on request for a left-handed customer and sold in 1927, this split-seconds chronograph with a cushion case in 18K yellow gold (34 x 34mm) and movement No. 198‘012 (diameter 13 lignes) stood out with its unusual arrangement of operating elements and displays. The case and the movement were rotated by 180° with the chronograph pusher at 9 o'clock instead of 3 o'clock and the split-seconds pusher at 8 o'clock instead 2 o’clock.

The silver dial with black Brequet numerals was reconfigured to reposition the 30-minute chronograph counter from 3 to 9 o'clock and the subsidiary seconds from 9 to 3 o'clock. The uncommon shape of the chronograph and split-seconds hand with counterweights stands out as well.
