ARNOLD & SON – Instrument TB TIGER Limited Edition

ARNOLD & SON Instrument TB TIGER 22-Carat Gold Limited Edition NEW

A consummate marriage of Metier d’Art hand-engraving
and miniature hand-painting from Arnold & Son

The latest addition to the Arnold & Son Instrument Collection combines the marine precision of the true-beat (TB) movement with aesthetic perfection. Featuring one of the instantly recognizable design cues of the Instrument Collection, the off-centre positioning of the time display at 9 o’clock leaves a generous open area and creates a perfect setting for the exquisite engraved and hand-painted depiction of a tiger. To underline its exclusivity, this fabulous example of high-precision technology and aesthetic perfection is available in a limited edition of just twenty-eight pieces.

The dominant feature of this fine-quality wristwatch is a hand-engraved appliqué of a tiger executed by Arnold & Son’s master engraver, which is then duplicated for the series. Hand engraving is a traditional art form that makes use of hardened steel tools called burins and other special implements. They create cuts, lines and texturing that build up entire images or, as in the case of the TB Tiger, a perfectly sculpted figure of a tiger in solid 22-carat rose gold.

The breathtaking richness of detail is then duplicated in rose gold for the rest of the series. Once the appliqué is in place on the dial, the tiger’s black stripes are painted by hand, a process that accentuates its three dimensional nature. Hand engraving and miniature painting both call for infinite patience and expertise and take many years of concentrated practice to fully master.

With its pure, timeless design, the Instrument Collection takes its inspiration from the chronometers produced by John Arnold’s son, John Roger, in the latter part of his career. The true beat is a rare complication these days, and combining it with an automatic winding system calls for enormous technical expertise. In the A&S6103, this was made possible by a patented system comprising a sophisticated double wheel, an oscillating pinion and a pallet mechanism.

A solution of this complexity calls for microscopic precision (to tolerances of a micron, or one thousandth of a millimetre), and the key components are made using state-of-the-art LIGA manufacturing technology. The case houses the rhodium-treated A&S6103 movement with Haute Horlogerie finishing. All the plates and bridges in the movement are hand-chamfered and decorated – a further indication of the traditional craftsmanship upheld by Arnold & Son.

The TB Tiger special edition is limited to just twenty-eight timepieces.

A sensorial experience of two hearts beating as one

A tribute to the works of Abraham-Louis Breguet and, closer to us, Philippe Dufour, the  Phoenix 10.3 presents, on the dial side, the twin pulsation of oscillators that mutually compensate each other, averaging errors through a differential gear.

Phoenix 10.3 GATSBY

In the quest for precision, the twin regulator is a complication that finds its relevance in a wristwatch that must endure important gravitational stresses. Beyond its mechanical prowess, the three-dimensional architecture of the movement achieves the reconciliation of the parts with the whole.

The front stage is all about symmetry. We peal the layers down, showing the magic in motion, from the regulators dragging their escapements to the rotating differential gear. In the backstage, owner’s privilege, asymmetry fights back.

We take off with a wolf teeth ratchet wheel and its eagle shaped c lick and aircraft’s spring. We land on the other side of the differential gear train, mounted on a winged bridge, with non-conical satellite gears to limit the friction on the escapement.

 Phoenix 10.3 HUGO

Three centuries of watchmaking history allow us to draw freely from different eras and tendencies. For this piece, we chose the golden years of the Roaring Twenties, where the angular geometry of art-deco followed the crazy curves of art-nouveau, an endless reservoir of mechanical inventions, architecture and fine arts.

We bring movement decoration, trimming work that became an art, into a new dimension.

The movement DR 1500 decoration is elevated to a new dimension. We climb on progressive or balcony angles and continued reliefs on different bridges. The oscillators beat at 21,600 variations per hour and the twin parallel barrels offer up to 60 hours of power reserve.

History
An authentic record saved in the Neuchâtel State Archives establishes that on March 29, 1718, a contract was concluded between Abraham Favre and the master watchmaker Daniel Gagnebin in which the former commits to teach Abraham Favre the profession of watchmaker to the extent of his knowledge for a period of three years.

This document marks the beginning of the Favre watchmaking history. Another official document dated from 1737 then mentions his son, also named Abraham, as a master watchmaker. From the fourth generation on, the trade name of the firm becomes Abraham Favre & Fils, and the timepieces are subsequently signed with the brand "A. Favre & Fils", symbol of the origin and the continuity.
