“At IWC Schaffhausen, we have a long history with the film industry, most importantly reflected in our support of film festivals around the world, including the Tribeca Film Festival®. Our desire to support film festivals and young filmmakers is because we believe in the art of storytelling,” says Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “It is the foundation of our work. Each new timepiece starts with a story we wish to convey to our customers. With the new Portugieser Annual Calendar dedicated to the Tribeca Film Festival, we are able to not only share a story about IWC’s heritage and craftsmanship, but also our commitment to film and the talented people within the film industry.”

A STAR IS BORN

The Portugieser Annual Calendar Edition “Tribeca Film Festival 2016” (Ref. 503506) is powered by the IWC-manufactured 52850 calibre. Located at “12 o’clock” on the dial, IWC’s annual calendar shows the month, date and day in three separate, semicircular windows. The “American” order in which the date is shown was not only necessary from a technical and design point of view, but is also an homage to F. A. Jones, IWC’s American founder. With its voluminous 44.2-millimetre case, grooved bezel, classic railway-track-style chapter ring, slim feuille hands and Arabic numerals, the Portugieser Annual Calendar very closely resembles the original Portugieser of 1939, a veritable design icon.

The dial is a subtle slate colour which embodies the New York City streets to honour the Tribeca Film Festival, while the small seconds subdial and the power reserve display are Bordeaux-coloured, symbolizing the red carpets – a glamorous mainstay of the film industry often visible around the world, from film premieres to award shows. The oscillating weight bears the logo of the Tribeca Film Festival, and the milled lettering 01/50 is a reminder that only very few watch lovers will be able to secure this extra-special edition.

COMMITMENT TO CREATIVITY

In addition to the limited edition, IWC will show support to the festival by making a donation to Tribeca Film Institute (TFI). TFI is a non-profit arts organization that supports film-makers with grants, professional development and resources, while also helping students to discover film and film-making. The donation, in the amount of USD 100,000, will be split between TFI and one individual who is chosen by a jury as this year’s “IWC Filmmaker Award” recipient. The award will be presented at the Annual “For the Love of Cinema” Gala during the festival on Thursday, 14 April 2016. The Filmmaker award will consist of a cash prize of USD 50,000 and will provide finishing funds to a feature-length narrative with technical excellence based on the candidate’s innovative approach to cinema and character, as well as year-long film-maker mentorship by TFI. The IWC Filmmaker Award will channel IWC’s passion for innovation and technical inventiveness to support the next generation of film-makers as they realize their creative vision, and help them to reach audiences worldwide.

“Given the similarities between watchmaking and filmmaking – the elaborate mechanics, master craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail and timing – it is no surprise that
IWC supports film festivals across the globe,” says Anna Ponder, Executive Director of TFI. “Tribeca Film Institute has proven to be a rich creative breeding ground for new talent in the film industry and we are so pleased to continue to be a dedicated partner”.

HALDIMANN – H1 Flying Central Tourbillon

HALDIMANNH1 Flying Central Tourbillon

Watchmaking is a tradition that goes back centuries for the Haldimann family, to 1642 precisely. A mechanical wizard and the inventor of the flying central tourbillon, Beat Haldimann is surely the pride of his ancestors.

This child of the Bernese Oberland believes watches are first and foremost pieces of art. Moreover, time is nothing more than a pretext for his concept of watchmaking.

It should come as no surprise, therefore, that production never exceeds a handful of pieces a year.

The H1 Flying Central Tourbillon is one of these rare works. Fitted with three barrels, it has been entirely designed, developed and produced in the Haldimann workshops in Thun.

The platinum or gold case is also crafted in-house and hand-finished.

This watch's classic aesthetic, together with its mechanical sobriety, unequivocally convey the brand's artistic vocation.

Were there a competition for the most beautiful flying central tourbillon, few if any could challenge the H1.

 Familientradition seit 1642

We aim to explore the limits of what the human hand is capable of achieving. It is only as a manufacturer in the truest sense of the word that we can pursue this aim, with machines and instruments that we operate with our hands. Computerised machines would make it impossible to reach this goal. The warmth of the watchmaker's hand blends with his delicate movements to achieve his impressive performance. From the raw material up until the first sound of the melody. This essence is later attached to the wrist of the future owner. From there it enters his perception and is transferred to him.

Our values

Our oeuvres are the result of a unique make and workmanship involved in the creation process. Their perfection and individuality can be attributed to our values. These values originate in our tradition to which we adhere. A family tradition of innovation since 1642. It was father and son, Ulrich and Hans Haldimann, who established this tradition.

Since 1642 Haldimann has been producing exclusively mechanical movements and watches in Switzerland to be delivered to their proud owners all over the world. A Haldimann philosophy and mentality has been cultivated over the centuries, in unison with the formation of Switzerland. Within this philosophy we distinguish twelve aspects that we have been cultivating in particular. These aspects are represented in our brand logo with its twelve phases of the moon.

Preposition

When I close my eyes I can still see him in front of me: the master watchmaker who was my instructor. His loupe, hands, and lab coat remain vivid memories for me today. I spent my apprenticeship years in his wonderful workshop as a clock and watch repairer, learning how to restore new and old masterpieces.

Among this magnificent blend of art and technology, combining craftsmanship and intellect, I soon developed the ambition to create such masterpieces myself.

Design, manufacture, and production are all executed in our own workshop, which enables us to combine art, technology and quality at the highest level.

Haldimann clocks and watches are all individual and unique pieces. We can therefore consider all your ideas and suggestions when creating your very own timepiece.

The Haldimann family tradition reaches back to 1642. The original Haldimann creations of this era continue to give pleasure to customers all over the world. We look forward to welcoming you personally and answering any queries at our workshop or at Baselworld.
