Blancpain Air Command: rebirth of a legend

The Blancpain Air Command chronograph belongs to the select circle of legendary watches whose very rareness exacerbates their appeal to collectors. While its creation remains something of a mystery and has generated a variety of stories, its military vocation is a certainty. Considered superior to that of other timepieces of this type, its design is likewise universally admired. Blancpain is now reissuing this legendary model in a 500-piece vintage style edition and the arrival of this major new model in the brand’s collections testifies to a part of its history.

In the early 1950s, the French Ministry of Defence was looking for a high-precision chronograph capable of meeting demanding specifications. The watch to be selected must have a black dial with luminous hour-markers and hands to maximise legibility. The movement must be equipped with a flyback function, as well as a small seconds hand. A few years later, other armed forces began looking for a similar instrument. Blancpain, which had already won over the American Navy with its Fifty Fathoms diver’s watch, drew inspiration from it to develop a chronograph for the United States Air Force. This timepiece was offered to American military pilots through the distributor Allen V. Tornek, for whom Blancpain is thought to have created a dozen watches as prototypes. The total production of Air Command chronographs was probably very limited.

Renowned as the most sought- after military chronographs of the late 1950s, the Blancpain Air Command model has now been given a new lease of life. The 2019 edition exudes a style that is singularly faithful to that of the original. In keeping with its forerunner, intended at the time for pilots of the most modern aircraft of the era, it is equipped with a ratcheted "countdown" rotating bezel. Once set before flight, this feature enables instantaneous reading of the exact time when the fuel reserve is no longer sufficient for the plane to continue its trajectory. The time scale of the bezel, as well as the dial hour-markers and hands, are made of "old radium" type Super-LumiNova®, reproducing the orange hue of the original chronograph indications. The model bears a 30-minute totaliser at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock, while a tachymeter scale running around the chapter ring indicates speeds based on a 1000-metre distance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In order to enhance the readability of the information and accentuate the majestic nature of this collector’s watch, Blancpain has improved the dial opening compared to the original model. The face of the new Air Command is protected by a sapphire box-type crystal, a distinctive characteristic of the watches from this period that also appears on the back of the watch – a first for Blancpain. The 42.5 mm-diameter steel case thus reveals a snailed movement notably graced with a contrasting propeller-shaped red gold oscillating weight.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A legendary timepiece deserved an equally prestigious calibre. The new Blancpain Air Command is powered by the F388B movement, whose high frequency of 5 Hz is perfectly adapted to its functions, since it enables each second to be divided into tenth-of-a-second intervals. This high frequency ensures greater accuracy, especially when timing events. Another advantage of the F388B movement is a vertical clutch that provides the chronograph seconds hand with a smooth start, as well as optimally seamless stop and start functions. It has a column-wheel system, which remains the exclusive preserve of high-end chronographs, particularly because it gives a velvety feel when starting or finishing a measurement and returning the hands to zero. The flyback function enables instantaneous zero-resetting and restarting.

Combining a resolutely vintage style with Blancpain’s latest technical advances, the new 500-piece limited edition Air Command chronograph makes a remarkable entry into the brand’s contemporary universe. This exclusive model, fitted with a patinated calf leather strap, revives the history linking the Manufacture in Le Brassus to 1950s military aviation.

ACADEMIA HOUR PLANET

The DeWitt brand is going back to basics, to its DNA: a man, a vision, an uncompromising passion for inventing mechanical machines. The Academia HOUR PLANET is the latest example of this micro-manufacture’s capacity to re-invent itself, an ideal means of showcasing the passage of time. A perfect marriage of the world of mechanics and the world of travel. This timepiece boasts an exceptional centrepiece: a GMT globe bordered by the signature DeWitt chain.

A lover of satellite images of the Earth, Jérôme de Witt has blended his passion for mechanics with the inspiration that has come from his travels. It was after looking out from the window of an aeroplane one day that Count Jérôme de Witt decided to incorporate a textured globe into a watch. The iconic DeWitt chain has been crafted entirely by hand from 192 components. The chain causes the globe to rotate according to the time zone one is in, with a day/night indicator.

The Academia HOUR PLANET watch is the perfect union between resolutely modern aesthetics and a highly technical piece, bringing together the most subtle colours, materials and finishes. In a pure contemporary spirit, it embraces the new design codes of the DeWitt micro-manufacture.

This timepiece features a mechanical movement with a 55-hour power reserve. Bordered by DeWitt’s famous imperial columns, the minimalist and highly embossed dial is decorated with a completely visible balance regulator that is suspended and held in place by a highly elevated bridge. The 46 mm case features a black alligator-skin strap with large scales, thereby creating a daring contrast between the assertive character of the Academia model and a fully realised aesthetic harmony.

Each detail has been carefully thought out, requiring a substantial investment of time. This new creation perfectly reflects the finishing standards adopted by the DeWitt Manufacture: the surfaces and hands have been manually chamfered, satin-brushed and polished. These touches display a high level of technical skill and a rare sense of depth. A rare piece, one where, to quote Leonardo da Vinci, the “details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail”.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This back-to-basics approach by DeWitt was key, and with it a simple message: smaller collections, with a threefold reduction in the number of models, and a greater emphasis on major pieces, like this new Academia HOUR PLANET with its distinctive characteristics like the famous imperial columns.

Going back to the very DNA of the brand’s passionate founder: Inventing Mechanical Machines.

Jaeger-LeCoultre – MASTER Ultra Thin Tourbillon Gold

Jaeger-LeCoultreMASTER Ultra Thin Tourbillon Pink Gold 40mm
THE MASTER ULTRA THIN
TOURBILLON IN PINK GOLD

One of the jewels in the crown of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s virtuoso watchmaking constellation, the Master collection for Men is gaining several new additions this year, including a new Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon watch in pink gold.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Following in the lineage of the earliest Ultra Thin models, this piece revels in those same pure shapes that gave rise to the characteristics so beloved by connoisseurs: the roundness of its case; the strong presence of its hour-markers; the sophistication of its Dauphine hands; the finishes of its Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 978G, visible on the back of the watch; and last but not least, the endless ballet of the Tourbillon and its moving titanium carriage.

Precision and harmony

Against the eggshell-coloured dial of the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon watch, its new, larger hour-markers with their gilded, honed silhouette are more eye-catching and easier to read than ever. They taper off at 6 o'clock and disappear altogether to make room for the Tourbillon to display itself, with its new gold bridge.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the back of the watch, the new mainplate of its automatic movement can be seen, decorated with a sunray finish. The extremely sophisticated crafting of this watch – both in its details and finishes – brings a whole new dimension, no matter which angle you take to admire its front or its reverse.

The finesse of precision

10.77 millimetres – that’s how fine the new case is on the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon, yet it can accommodate the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 978G. Taking beautiful finishing to even greater heights, this self-winding mechanical movement benefits from a 45-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Its Tourbillon draws the eye through a wide aperture at 6 o'clock, captivating the gaze with the play of full and empty spaces among its gear cogs. This is the very heartbeat of the watch, made visible in a perfect rhythmic movement, which gives watchmaking precision an aerial lightness that never fails to fascinate.

Utterly sober

The pink gold version of the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon offers perfect equilibrium, a balance that can be enjoyed both rationally and emotionally. Irreproachable rigour – expressed in the supreme linearity of its hands and hour-markers – is a foil for the complex, intricate tangle of components that make up the Tourbillon. Its utterly sober pink gold case and eggshell dial are balanced by the generosity of a brown alligator leather strap. Proof that technical stringency can go hand in hand with creative audacity. Master watchmakers, artists and craftsmen at the Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux have abided by this golden rule since the Grande Maison’s beginnings.

Celebration of precision, in a model of exceptional finesse... These few words sum up the entire philosophy behind the Master Ultra Thin collection, inspired by the first ultra-slim watch designed by Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1907.

Harry Winston – Histoire de Tourbillon 10 Edition

Harry Winston Histoire de Tourbillon 10 - Unique Collection 10th Anniversary Timepiece 2019

For the first time ever, Harry Winston uses four distinct tourbillons in a Histoire de Tourbillon creation. Arranged in perfectly symmetrical order, the four independent, adjacent cores rotate in 36 seconds, their high-precision steps unified by a series of three differentials. Together, they make Histoire de Tourbillon 10 a timepiece dedicated to superlative chronometry, with a unique design.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Having previously used tourbillons with single, double or triple axes, combined (or not) with single or double tourbillons or a carousel, Harry Winston's latest creation makes a big impression with a new achievement in watchmaking. For the first time ever, a wristwatch produced as a series is equipped with four tourbillons. This achievement, which translates into an equally impressive design, represents a milestone in the story of the Histoire de Tourbillon collection.

A milestone

Histoire de Tourbillon 10 marks the 10th anniversary of the Harry Winston collection, dedicated to the reigning complication in contemporary fine watchmaking.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A decade of perseverance and innovation has pushed the boundaries of what the tourbillon can do. This year, the collection culminates in two timepieces -- 10 of each -- and a special edition Winstonium model, limited to just one unique piece.

A dream vehicle

A rectangular case was needed to realize the Histoire de Tourbillon 10 complication. At 53.3 mm wide and 39.1 mm tall, the piece is as much a vessel as it is a watch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The four tourbillons of the HW4702 caliber, which has no less than 673 components, can be seen in the four corners of the case, housed in a glass box of impressive proportions and supported by two transverse bridges. Carved like three- dimensional wings, openworked and sculptural, they round out the impression of symmetry that emerges from Histoire de Tourbillon 10.

Distributed operation

The idea behind using multiple regulating mechanisms is to take advantage of the qualities of each one and harness their unique way of reacting to gravity, the effects of which the tourbillon is designed to offset. Thus, they do not mark the same time, but the same time must be given, so the operation of these mechanisms is unified by three differentials.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The first is connected to the two tourbillons on the left, while the second is connected to those on the right side of the case. The third, which is large and located in a central position, does the job of averaging the two previous differentials and transmitting its information to the juxtaposed hands.

Distributed power

The tourbillons are a major source of precision for Histoire de Tourbillon 10, but they are not alone. Chronometry relies on other factors, including the quality of the power flow that feeds the regulating mechanisms. The closer this flow is to complete consistency, the smoother and more accurate the movement of the tourbillons is.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This phenomenon is made possible by two pairs of fast-winding barrels that are overlaid, mounted successively, and then connected to the tourbillons. As a result, the energy is not shared across the four corners of the movement, but distributed as required.

Center stage

The Histoire de Tourbillon 10 dial is a single component sapphire piece, with complex and perfectly symmetrical volumetry. Its central part is a hollow circle that hosts the 12 hour markers for the chapter ring. It extends upwards and downwards through a rectangular extension that carries the two large numbers 6 and 12.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The bezel of this exceptional timepiece also uses volume in a distinctive way because it is chamfered and beveled, and features greater elevation at 6 and 12 o'clock. At these two sensitive points, the bezel is marked by two notches, which, together with the variation in height, trace the three Harry Winston arches. This reference to the architecture of the entrance to the iconic Fifth Avenue Showroom is one of the specific signatures of Harry Winston timepieces.

In contrast

The surface coloring of the HW4702 caliber rounds out the personality of the three versions of Histoire de Tourbillon 10. The unique Winstonium piece can be recognized by its two large blue tourbillon bridges, a color borrowed from the gearwheel bridges inside the case, while the rest of the platinum is completely rhodium-plated. The white gold model features rhodium-plated tourbillon bridges and a dark gray platinum.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This shade is repeated on the back of the barrel bridge. Finally, the version with the rose gold case inverts its colors in the barrel bridges and features a rhodium-plated platinum. The strap of each Histoire de Tourbillon echoes the various models. The Winstonium and white gold versions are mounted on alligator leather with large scales and topstitched with a 950 platinum thread. And, the pink gold version launches a new bracelet color: black with copper highlights enhanced by topstitching in rose gold thread. Elegant, sophisticated touches and a profound attention to the tiniest details allow for a series of truly unique timepieces.

Glashutte Original – SENATOR Chronometer Tourbillon Platinum Edition

Glashutte Original SENATOR Chronometer Tourbillon Platinum 42mm - Limited Edition

Premiere of a world first

In the small Saxon town of Glashütte, elegance and mechanics have long been combined in elaborately finished timepieces. In 1920, the master watchmaker Alfred Helwig gave the tourbillon, one of the most challenging complications of haute horlogerie, the appearance of weightlessness by anchoring the mechanism on one side only.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Today Glashütte Original presents Alfred Helwig’s invention in an advanced and highly sophisticated version. The Saxon manufactory has succeeded for the first time in combining a flying tourbillon with a second-stop mechanism, zero reset and minute detent, allowing the time to be set with great precision. This world first edition in platinum is limited to 25 pieces and officially certified as a chronometer.

The Tourbillon: traditionally in motion

As fascinating as it is to observe the turning of a tourbillon cage, it was originally intended to enhance the precision of a watch. Whether cantilevered (“flying”) or anchored with a bridge in the classical manner: this “whirlwind” turns, together with the entire oscillation and escapement system, on its own axis. In the past, this made it possible to counter the impact of gravity on the rate performance of pocket watches. With modern wristwatches, the tourbillon serves above all to demonstrate the maker’s exceptional horological expertise, which connoisseurs around the world are certain to appreciate.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Glashütte Original shows that a tourbillon can still serve its original purpose. Second-stop mechanism, zero reset and minute detent ensure that the minute and second hands are synchronised, allowing the time to be set with great precision: the tourbillon’s rotating cage stops the moment the crown is pulled, and since the second hand is mounted on the cage, it also stops immediately.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The watchmakers of the manufactory welcomed the challenge to find a way to stop the flying tourbillon “in full flight” and to combine it with the ability to set the time precisely. Their solution is as well engineered as it is innovative. Glashütte Original has applied for two patents on the complex construction.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To set the time the crown is pulled out. This triggers a vertical clutch that locks the tourbillon cage, and with that the balance, in its current position. If the crown is then pulled out further and held in position, the second hand advances clockwise to zero, and the minute hand advances to the next full index. In the process, a rotational damper ensures a smooth movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Now the crown can be released and – while the small second remains at zero – the time can be set precisely to the minute while the crown is still pulled out. At the desired point in time the crown is pressed back again, which releases the seconds hand, thus ensuring that minutes and seconds are synchronised perfectly. This version has also been fitted, for the first time, with shock protection on both sides of the flying tourbillon.

The manual winding Calibre 58-05
Chronometric precision in elegant attire

The high rate precision of the Senator Chronometer Tourbillon – Limited Edition has been confirmed by an independent testing institute. Each watch is certified as a chronometer, in conformance with the DIN 8319 standard, by the German Calibration Service in Glashütte.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The watch undergoes 15 days of testing in five different positions and at three different temperatures. In addition, a silicon balance spring offers greater protection against magnetic fields and changes in temperature. The manual winding calibre 58-05, which beats at a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour, has a power reserve of 70 hours when fully wound, indicated by the display at 9 o’clock.

The design: multi-layered and transparent

The 42 mm platinum case presents a movement with highly refined decorative finishes. Beneath the off-centre, galvanic blue dial, fascinating views emerge from the combination of different levels and finishes. The dial and Flying Tourbillon rise like little towers over the upper and lower halves of the movement, resulting in a remarkable three-dimensional effect. The open design and a partially transparent sapphire crystal ring bearing the seconds scale draw the viewer’s gaze into the depths of the watch. Various hand engravings and the classic Glashütte stripe finish round off the decoration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In addition, a particularly sophisticated detail is positioned discreetly on the upper edge of the dial. The mirrored upper ring displays, at 12 o’clock, the inscription “Chronometer Tourbillon”, engraved back-to-front on the dial fastener.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Also the back of the watch features fascinating, elaborate traditional finishes. A dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap with a fold fastener in platinum completes this model.
