The one-of-a-kind aesthetics are inspired by Roger Dubuis30-year journey, as well as the breathtaking landscapes of the Middle East. It is a meaningful design, distinguished by the Maison’s essential expressivity and technical know-how.

The Spirit of Serenity

The original ‘Hommage’ in 1996 was Mr. Roger Dubuis’ tribute to the talented watchmakers, teachers, and friends who had influenced his career. This year, it has been the Maison’s founder himself who has received the honour. Following the release of the first “La Placide” timepiece, the next addition is now unveiled, with a new creation that commemorates his kind-hearted character.

Given his “Placide” nickname at a young age, Mr. Dubuis was known throughout his career for his calm demeanour and gentle wisdom. When creating this special timepiece, the Maison wanted to celebrate that tender spirit through the peacefulness of a nighttime desert. With Sukoon meaning “serenity” and Al-Layl, “night”, the timepiece is also an ode to Mr. Dubuis’ passion for astronomic complications; and bridges the prowess of Arabic astronomy to watchmaking made in Geneva.

It's the perfect stage to showcase Mr. Dubuis’ favourite Perpetual Calendar complication with Biretrograde display.

Visions of Nature

The 38mm watch is crafted in platinum (including the case body, bezel, crown, and case back), a material chosen to convey the silvery radiance of the Moon at night. It is presented on an

Astral Blue calfskin leather strap with a rarely seen platinum thread, and a triple-folding platinum buckle, embossed with the same heritage Roger Dubuis emblem—the very first logo of the Maison—that can be seen on the crown.

The Dynamism and Richness of the Dial

The dynamism and richness of the dial is brought to life through a multi-layered construction with a variety of finishes. These include:

The flange in mother-of-pearl, a material Roger Dubuis was among the first to use on men's watches, is enhanced with a high lustre to bring radiance as well as contrast to the rest of the dial. It features a transferred minute track and polished angles for extra shine.

The same mother-of-pearl is used to create the calendar segments and counters, with transferred texts and hand-bevelled sides.

The main plate is adorned with guilloché waves, emblematic of Roger Dubuis' early creations and specially brought back to recall the ripples of sand shaped by desert winds. It is bathed in an “Astral Blue” shade, capturing the stillness of the night sky just before dawn. Together with a lacquered finish, it creates a constant play of light on the wrist. Meanwhile, the hour and minute hands are produced in 18K white gold, and four Arabic numerals appear in tribute to Middle Eastern culture.

Finally, there is also a moon phase layer, made with a blue aventurine base and two slightly domed Moons in 18K yellow gold—the only elements in this material in the timepiece as a reference to the Maison's first Perpetual Calendars.

By utilizing such a contrasting variety of materials, as well as distinctive finishing techniques, the overall effect is one of depth and volume, characteristic of today's expressivity.

RD1472: A Modern Revival

At the watch’s heart, the RD1472 calibre fuses an upgraded RD14 calibre with the biretrograde Perpetual Calendar module, RD72.

The RD14 was Roger Dubuis’ first in-house automatic movement from 2004. Its reintroduction utilizes original and remanufactured components.

Key features of the movement include a swan neck and pistol bridges, the same that appeared on pocket watches—a trademark that honours the historic culture of horology Mr. Roger Dubuis held dear.

The RD72 module was first used in 1999 and is notable for its Perpetual Calendar complication and biretrograde display, which combines day, date, month, leap year, and moon phase displays. The Maison remanufactured the main plate, large bridge, and 50% of the components, such as levers, springs, wheels, and pinions—carrying out all the work in-house.

The entire movement is set and tested for a long period of time to meet the chronometry requirements added by the Poinçon de Genève in 2012. Visible through the case back, it is constructed with 307 components, including a newly-made rotor in 18K pink gold, and is distinguished by 15 decoration techniques.
