KEES Engelbarts – Mokume Gane Dragon – Unique Piece

KEES EngelbartsMokume Gane Dragon 925 Argentium Silver  – Unique Piece

Kees Engelbarts perpetuates his long-standing series of unique engraved timepieces inspired by japanese myths with this mokume-gane dragon watch. The dragon is engraved out of one solid piece of mokume-gane in low-relief and the background has been etched to enhance texture and contrast.

Kees Engelbarts is the first known artist to have used mokume-gane in watchmaking and to have engraved it, starting in the 90s. Following him, many other brands have started using composite materials in their watches, such as damast steel, layered carbon fiber, etc.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Mokume-gane is a metalwork technique developped by Denbei Shoami, a master artisan from 17th century Japan. The technique, literally translating to "wood-grain metal", consists of layering multiple different metals, which are then etched to accentuate or change the color of the metals, as well as their texture.

The hand-engraved dial of this unique piece is composed of 19 layers, alternating between silver and white gold, compressed into a 1mm thick plate. In order to engrave the dragon, material was progressively removed from the dial, exposing the different layers of the mokume-gane and revealing the wonderful patterns of the wood-grain. The dragon was then carefully engraved, one scale at a time.

Like much of Kees Engelbarts' earlier work, this watch presents evident asian inspiration, both in material choice and motifs. The front engraving depicts a japanese dragon.

These dragons are strongly connected to the element of  water, often living in rivers, lakes or seas, and protecting their respective body of water. While occidental dragons are associated with brute force and greed, japanese dragons are highly respected creatures and symbolize wisdom and peace.

The engraving on the back of the watch despicts asian-style clouds, as well as the dragon's claws holding a pearl, representing prosperity, power and immortality. The movement was silver-plated and then blackened to darken the engraving.

The dauphine hands are also made of mokume-gane, with the different layers being clearly visible thanks to the oxidizing.

The case, also made by Mr. Engelbarts, is made of 925 argentium silver, a silver alloy with germanium, known for being tarnish-resistant, and has a matte finish.

Overall, this watch perfectly embodies Kees Engelbarts' craftsmanship and style, being discrete on the wrist, but having plenty of detail when inspected more closely.

URWERK – UR-100V UltraViolet Titanium Automatic

URWERK UR-SATELLITE UR-100VUltraVioletTitanium Automatic 2022

 URWERK and its UR-100V UltraViolet.
Beyond colors

Violet! This magnificent shade is located at the far end of the visible colour spectrum perceptible to the human eye. Anything beyond violet is outside the field of colour. Violet is the ultimate hue. That of the fighters, the outsiders, the crazies. Heroes or villains? It doesn't matter. If you need to make yourself heard, do it in violet!

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Martin Frei talks about the colour that is so special to him: "I like the fact that a colour is much more than what we can perceive. The colour spectrum visible to our eyes ranges from red to violet. Beyond that shade, colour turns into a waveform that our eyes can no longer detect, ultraviolet. I am fascinated by the idea of creating a watch that celebrates this boundary, this tipping point, this transition from perceptible to imperceptible. The UR-100V UltraViolet is about this exploration of the limits. Our UltraViolet conveys something mystical, it's a hue that sits on the border of a dimension we call colour."

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Fitted with a rubber strap, the UR-100V UltraViolet picks up the codes of the 100 family. On the UR-100V, the satellite hours and minutes display is complemented by new information. Once the 60th minute has been reached, the minutes hand vanishes and reappears as a kilometre counter. It illustrates the 555 kilometres travelled every 20 minutes by every inhabitant of Planet Earth. This is in fact the average speed of rotation of the Earth calculated at the Equator (rotational distance). Appearing exactly opposite is the Earth's revolution around the sun (orbital distance), i.e. 35,740 kilometres per 20 minutes. On the face of the UR-100V, hours and kilometres thus share the same status, the same scale of value. These units are lit up at night in incandescent blue for the hours and in flamboyant green for the kilometres.

Felix Baumgartner, master watchmaker and co-founder of URWERK says: "This creation was inspired by a gift from my father, Geri Baumgartner, a renowned restorer of antique clocks. It is a clock made by Gustave Sandoz for the 1893 World Exhibition and its particularity lies in the fact that instead of showing the hours, it indicates the rotational distance travelled by the Earth at the Equator.”

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beating beneath the dome of the UR-100V is the new URWERK Calibre 12.02 with its three-satellite time display. "The change of calibre for this version is reflected in the redesign of the central carousel. The hour-markers are placed closer to the minutes scale for an even more intuitive and fluid reading of the time”, explains Felix Baumgartner. This carousel is forged in aluminium and then sanded and shot-blasted after anodising. Each of the satellite screws is satin-finished in a circular pattern. The satellites rest on a sanded and ruthenium-treated brass carousel. The structure covering the hours indication is made of sanded and shot-blasted aluminium. The UR-100V's automatic winding is governed by a bidirectional rotor regulated by a Windfänger airscrew.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The aesthetics of the UR-100V's case is a regressive pleasure. It will indeed remind the URWERK faithful of the aesthetics characterising the first models from the independent brand: "We have taken certain aesthetic elements from our first constructions and destructured our approach. For example, the steel dome of our historic models is reproduced here through the transparency of sapphire crystal. Its perfection is highlighted by the roughness of the titanium and steel case. As someone who constantly questions the dictates of symmetry, I have played with proportions to challenge the eye”,

sums up Martin Frei

Breguet – CLASSIQUE Calendrier 7337 Moon Phase

BREGUET CLASSIQUE Calendrier 7337 Moon Phase Gold Automatic 2022

New Classique 7337
Contemporary elegance

An emblematic timepiece of the Classique Collection, the new Classique 7337 Calendar features a modern style while retaining the strong codes that have forged the brand's history.

Classique Calendar 7337, available in white and rose gold joins the current Breguet collection.

The importance of details

This elegant, subtle and pure new interpretation by Breguet is resolutely contemporary without compromising its aesthetic origins. The brand’s various decorative skills are indeed present throughout the watch. Its off-centred dial is adorned with a very fine Clous de Paris hobnail guilloché pattern hand-engraved on a rose engine by the in-house artisans. The outer dial features a circular barleycorn motif. The moon phase at 12 o’clock is designed to provide powerful realism.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The gold moon is hand-hammered and the clouds surrounding it have been given a fine sandblasted treatment with a matt texture. Its sky is coated with a blue lacquer composed of spangles subtly revealing the stars depending on the angle from which the timepiece is viewed. The hours, minutes and seconds are indicated by the traditional blued steel open-tipped Breguet hands. The date and day are respectively placed at 2 and 10 o'clock. The windows feature a broad aperture for enhanced readability.

The movement

At the heart of its 39 mm white or rose case beats Calibre 502, which is one of Breguet’s thinnest movements at just 2.4 mm thick. Its design was conceived to provide a high level of performance despite its slenderness. Its barrel is open in order to enhance this slim aesthetic while guaranteeing constant energy and performance. Its oscillating weight is off-centred to provide maximum space for the main movement elements and is thus integrated within a minimum thickness.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This rhodium-plated self-winding movement consists of 236 components. It is equipped with a silicon balance-spring as well as an escapement featuring an inverted straight-line pallet-lever with silicon horns. Silicon boasts multiple properties. In addition to being resistant to corrosion and wear, it is insensitive to the influence of magnetic fields and improves the precision of the timepiece. This movement that can be admired through the sapphire caseback highlights a skill dear to Breguet: decoration.

While the white gold oscillating weight is hand-engraved on a rose engine with a circular barleycorn pattern, the other components are graced with chamfered finishes and a Côtes de Genève motif. Finally, the balance of the new Classique Calendar 7337 oscillates at a frequency of 3 Hz and has a 45-hour power reserve.

The Classique collection

Featuring a design representing a blend of purity and refinement, the Classique collection faithfully illustrates the strong aesthetic of the brand's origins. Above and beyond his talent as a watchmaker and inventor, Abraham-Louis Breguet was also one of the first designers. When the company was founded in Paris in 1775, baroque style was all the rage. He invented and initiated the neoclassical style in watchmaking – an aesthetic vision that gave the dials an avant-garde look while making it easier to read the watch's indications.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

He created open-tipped hands, the guilloché pattern and the off-centred dial, to name but a few of these novel stylistic features. The latter achievement appeared as of 1812 on pocket watches and established the brand’s DNA. Inspired by these creations, the first interpretation of the Classique 7337 wristwatch was introduced in 2009. The 2022 version is a contemporary and elegant incarnation of the original watch, while remaining faithful to the powerful signatures of the Classique line.

Available in 18K white or rose gold, this new timepiece is fitted with a strap in midnight blue for the white gold model and a mysterious brown for the rose gold version.

H. MOSER & CIE. – STREAMLINER Tourbillon Vantablack® Red Gold

H. MOSER & CIE.STREAMLINER Tourbillon Vantablack® Red Gold Automatic 2022

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Following on from the all-steel version, H. Moser & Cie. is releasing a red gold Streamliner equipped with the manufacture’s automatic calibre with flying tourbillon. The streamlined aesthetic of this ode to minimalism complements the complexity of the movement and the materials chosen.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In a striking play of contrasts, the Manufacture distils the essence of the tourbillon, the traditional Haute Horlogerie mechanism, combining it with Vantablack®, an innovative coating used in astrophysics and taken from the aeronautical industry. Minimalist, ultra-modern and timeless: H. Moser & Cie. presents the Streamliner Tourbillon Vantablack®.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO
For this version of its Streamliner model, H. Moser & Cie. has chosen to adorn all its perfectly rounded curves – from its cushion-shaped case to its integrated bracelet with articulating links– in red gold. Extremely meticulous polishing and satin-finishing work on adjacent surfaces is required to obtain the high-end finishes for which the Streamliner collection has become renowned. The transitions between the different types of finishes must indeed be flawless. The deep black of the Vantablack® dial is highlighted by the 5N red gold, with its vertical brushed finish alternating with polished lines.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The contrast between the two materials is further accentuated by the red gold indices which punctuate the dial, its blacker than black surface pierced by these rays of light. H. Moser & Cie. has achieved a real technical feat in fixing these indices from the back so that, depending on the angle, they appear or disappear against the Vantablack®, this innovative material created in 2012 which the Manufacture has grown to love and has learned to master over the years. Reputed to be the darkest substance in existence, this super-black Vantablack® coating is used in astrophysics for telescopes and by the military as thermal camouflage, to increase the stealth level of certain equipment, or in civil contexts for solar panels. It is composed of juxtaposed carbon nanostructures.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When a photon hits Vantablack®, this material absorbs 99.965% of the light. As our eyes need reflected light to perceive what we are looking at, Vantablack® is perceived as the absence of matter. H. Moser & Cie. had to put a structure in place and develop special processes to successfully work with this material, which is perfectly protected once behind the sapphire crystal.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Seemingly floating in the middle of a black hole, the one-minute flying tourbillon positioned at six o'clock comes to life as the driving force behind this exceptional timepiece. A marvel of ingenuity, this automatic HMC 804 calibre is equipped with a double hairspring designed and produced in-house by H. Moser & Cie.'s sister company Precision Engineering AG. Thanks to this pair of matched hairsprings, the movement of the point of gravity on each spring when it expands is corrected and the effect of friction reduced, significantly improving accuracy and isochronism in continual pursuit of perfection.

Packed with state-of-the-art technology, the Streamliner Tourbillon Vantablack® model is an understated powerhouse, a timepiece to be enjoyed to the full.
