Setting a new standard

Oris is delighted to introduce the new Carlos Coste Limited Edition IV, a highly functional diver’s timepiece made with freediving in mind. This extreme sport requires the diver to hold their breath for several minutes and – perhaps most importantly – to be fearless enough to push themselves to the limit.

This is what drives Oris’s long-time brand ambassador and record-breaking free diver Carlos Coste. In 2003 he became the first person to break the 100-metre barrier in the free immersion category, and in 2010 he set a new Guinness World Record by swimming 150 metres through Dos Ojos, a vast underwater cave network in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, on a single breath.

Impressively, he can hold his breath for seven and a half minutes, earning him the nickname ‘El Acuaman Criollo’ (which roughly translates as ‘the natural waterman’) in his native Venezuela.

There’s no one better qualified to test watches underwater, which is why Oris has worked closely with Carlos since 2006. Ahead of his latest record-breaking attempt in 2015, the independent Swiss company is delighted to introduce the new Carlos Coste Limited Edition IV.

The watch’s diving credentials start with a multi-piece 46mm case made from robust yet lightweight titanium. In the murky depths underwater, legibility is hugely important, which is why Oris has equipped the unidirectional rotating top ring with a white Super-LumiNova® minute scale set into the black ceramic inlay to allow the wearer to read the dive time remaining at a glance.

Its black dial has applied indices and hands filled with bright orange Super-LumiNova®, while the sapphire crystal is domed on both sides with anti-reflective coating to minimise glare. The watch is water-resistant to depths of up to 50 bar (500 metres).

Another smart touch is the dark orange dot on the manual helium valve at 3 o’clock, designed to help divers quickly distinguish the valve from the time and date setting crown at 2 o’clock. Inside the watch ticks an automatic movement, which powers a date at 3 o’clock and a small seconds sub-dial between 7 and 9 o’clock.

The watch comes on a black rubber strap – with the option of a titanium bracelet – which features Oris’s ingenious quick adjustment sliding-sledge folding clasp system. Oris has engraved the case back of the Carlos Coste Limited Edition IV with Carlos’s unique emblem, and the watch is limited to 2,000 pieces. It’s another example of Oris’s belief in making ‘real watches for real people.’

PANERAI – RADIOMIR 1940 3 Days CERAMICA – 48mm PAM577

OFFICINE PANERAI RADIOMIR 1940 3 Days CERAMICA 48mm - PAM00577  NEW

The details of the new Radiomir 1940 3 Days evoke the Panerai watches made for the commandos of the Royal Italian Navy but the matt black ceramic of the case and the minimalist design of the dial give the new model from the Radiomir 1940 collection a remarkably contemporary technological appearance.

Like all Panerai watches, history is the great inspiration of the new Radiomir 1940 3 Days Ceramica. The details of this new creation also demonstrate the ability of the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel to renew the heritage of the brand through the haute horlogerie technical solutions of contemporary sports watchmaking.

The new Radiomir 1940 case has a strongly technical appearance of great aesthetic impact, thanks to the use of a matt black ceramic, synthesised from Zirconium Oxide. Compared to steel – the material of period Panerai watches – ceramic provides higher performance in terms of hardness, lightness and resistance to scratches, corrosive elements and high temperatures.

The fascination of the watch is enhanced by its black dial with its sandwich structure. The dot and bar hour markers contribute to its minimalist design of great simplicity and clarity. The overall modernism of the dial design is elegantly set off by the ecru colour of the Super-LumiNova® used to make the markers luminous, and by the image in relief of the Silura a Lenta Corsa (human torpedo), a reminder that, in spite of its apparently contemporary appearance, the dial too was originally designed at the end of the 1930s for the watches supplied by Panerai to the commandos of the Italian Navy.

The P.3000 hand-wound movement, entirely created in the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, can be admired through a large polished sapphire crystal window in the back of the case.

The calibre measures 16½ lignes – a size that is characteristic of the period models – and it has wide brush-finished bridges covering the greater part of the wheelwork, a large balance wheel 13.2 mm in diameter and two spring barrels which provide a power reserve of three days.

The P.3000 movement also has the device for rapidly adjusting the time, which enables the hour hand to move in jumps of one hour forward or backward, without interfering with the movement of the minute hand or the running of the watch.

The new Radiomir 1940 3 Days Ceramica (PAM00577) is water-resistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres) and it is supplied with a strap of brown untreated leather, with contrasting hand-sewing, and closed by a trapezoidal buckle. Like the case back, the buckle is made of titanium for its non-allergenic properties and it has a DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating matching the colour of the case.
