Even the greatest legends have a start. The modern Panerai watch as we know it today was born in 1936 with the Radiomir. Intended to accompany the men of the Navy in their missions, this instrument bears the same name as the substance patented by Guido Panerai to produce luminescent dials and sighting mechanisms. Its characteristics are remarkable: a large steel case in the shape of a cushion, luminescent numerals and indexes as well as welded wire lugs which have remained largely unchanged from one generation of Radiomir to another, testifying to the iconic character of this original model.Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Specifically, the sailing yacht will make her appearance in Portofino to celebrate the launch of a new Panerai watch, the Radiomir Eilean.
This model pays homage to the first Radiomir, created by Guido Panerai to support marine missions, combined with features that embrace the aesthetic of the William Fife-designed Eilean; both works of fine craftmanship having been launched in the year of 1936.

Coincidentally, a sailboat destined to mark the history of Panerai was also manufactured in 1936. Eilean, designed by the great boatbuilder William Fife III at the Scottish shipyard of Fife, has sailed the seas of Europe and the Caribbean for decades, before falling into disrepair at the start of the 21st century. Panerai bought this sailboat in 2006 to restore it to all its splendor.

The Radiomir Eilean blends the iconic elements of the Radiomir collection with Eilean’s aesthetic heritage. Its 45 mm case, with identical proportions and characteristics since the time of the first Radiomir, is composed of a patinated steel with a matte finish reflecting the light with a softer and warmer luster than a particularly polished metal. Its case has vintage-style gold hands, which indicate the time on a signature sandwich dial, the numerals and indexes of which are coated in beige Super-LumiNova ™ with a green glow - characteristics faithful to the appearance of the first models.Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO
The face has been designed with striations and a variegated brown finish that is reminiscent of Eilean’s teak deck, complete with a dragon engraving on the left side of the case replicating the same emblem that decorates the yacht’s hull. Within the case, the watch hands are vintage in style with a golden finish and numerals and indices feature a green glow that has been used in early models of the watch.Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO
Other nautical details infused into the luxury timepiece include an inscription reading “Eilean 1936”, identical to the one from the boat's boom, located on both the caseback and the strap.

This period coincides with the arrival of the namesake sailboat in Portofino on the occasion of a commemoration of the Italianity, a concept that describes the expression par excellence of a culture, style and identity specific to Italy. The Radiomir Eilean is the perfect embodiment of Italianity in the world of watchmaking.
