Panerai celebrates the anniversary of the Radiomir prototype with a limited-edition that goes back to its roots

For over a century, the Panerai family legacy has been intertwined with precision instruments made to accompany the Italian military in their exploits.

Commissioned by the Royal Italian Navy to supply high-precision instruments, it was Guido Panerai’s Radiomir - a radium- based substance that illuminates for visibility in the dark – that began it all when it was patented in 1916.

An archival receipt shows that the Radiomir prototype was presented in 1935, and over the years, the sandwich construction has been progressively adjusted and is currently made of only two superimposed plates. Other improvements include the crown-protecting device, and a new luminous substance, the Luminor. A watch produced strictly for the military, the forces used it until the early 1970s, with its designs protected by military secrets.

The historical Radiomir models PAM00753 and PAM00754 have been redesign with a new vision and pure aesthetic, making it coherent with new Radiomir codes.

The Radiomir Officine PAM01385 pays tribute to many of the iconic elements of the 1935 Radiomir prototype while incorporating contemporary technical expertise to exude a universal appeal to watch lovers.

Set in a polished steel 45mm case with the iconic cone-shaped crown, this watch features a brown dial with indexes and numerals only at twelve and six o’clock while the beige Super-Luminova® illuminates in green in the dark. Matched with a dark brown leather strap, the timepiece’s shade highlights the brown dial, a matte color style that features for the first time within the collection. The dial has been refined keeping only the new Radiomir signature: “RADIOMIR PANERAI”, without the collection’s typical OP logo.

Distinctive Italian design & Historic association: the reference features a new matte taupe dial, giving a strong contrast with the other references and is an E-commerce exclusivity available only on panerai.com

The dial construction is hollowed like on the Luminor Manuali, the numerals and indexes are filled in with Super-LumiNova lighting up in green in the darkness. Hands have been uniformed to the other Radiomir families to pay homage to the historical shapes.

True to the Radiomir heritage inside and out, the Radiomir PAM01385 has a hand-wound movement like its ancestors. Integrated in a case waterproof to 10 bars (approximately 100 meters), this caliber with a 3-day power reserve was designed and developed at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel.

Resilient and stable thanks to the presence of a bridge with dual supports, Caliber P.6000 is equipped with a device that stops the balance wheel when the crown is pulled out and features a three-day power reserve provided by a single barrel.

All these characteristics are summarized in a limited edition inspired by an archival receipt dated 24 October 1935 that testifies to the birth of the first Radiomir prototype.

To commemorate the milestone, this e-commerce exclusive will be launched on 24 October 2023 in a limited 300 pieces.

Panerai unveils the Radiomir Guido Panerai & Figlio timepiece, to be auctioned by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo.

Panerai announces the launch of a fascinating reinterpretation of its iconic Radiomir model, the Radiomir Guido Panerai & Figlio, that draws inspiration from the legendary Angelus caliber found in the Ref. 3646 model from the 1960s. This collector’s timepiece will be offered for sale through a collaboration with the renowned Phillips auction house and their market leading Watch department in occasion of The Geneva Watch Auction: XVIII on November 3, 2023 in Geneva, with all proceeds, including the whole Phillips’ Buyer’s Premium, benefitting Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO).

Our partnership with Panerai over the past two years has created heightened awareness about the ocean’s critical importance and the dire need for decisive interventions” says Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary of IOC-UNESCO. “Now the synergy between Phillips, an esteemed auction house, and Panerai, a brand with a profound maritime heritage, and their generous donation will support UNESCO’s action on Ocean Literacy. Through collective action in education and empowerment of youth, UNESCO and its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission hope to harness innovative ocean-based solutions for a brighter and more sustainable future.”

“We are excited to collaborate with Phillips on the auction of our Radiomir Guido Panerai & Figlio timepiece,” says Jean-Marc Pontroué, CEO of Panerai. “This exclusive timepiece embodies a significant chapter of our storied heritage, breathing life into our past through the legendary Angelus caliber and celebrating our rich history. This initiative with Phillips, and its support to the UNESCO cause, reflects our commitment to continuously push boundaries. We are thrilled to see our history and technicity celebrated and embraced.”

Aurel Bacs, Senior Consultant & Alexandre Ghotbi, Head of Watches Europe and Middle East, Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo said: “We are honored to offer this unique Panerai inspired by the brand’s beautiful vintage watches and featuring a vintage Angelus movement. We started speaking with Panerai close to two years ago and have had the pleasure of being part of each step in the creation of this timepiece and seeing it go from idea to a final physical object. For the past several years Phillips has been chosen by prestigious manufactures to auction prototypes and unique pieces that mark the history of contemporary watchmaking, and this unique Panerai is such a timepiece.”

In the sixties, while it was the supplier of the Italian Navy, Panerai created the self-luminous Radiomir watch Ref. 3646, which would later become known as one of its most iconic models, the Radiomir. A transitional model, the Ref. 3646 featured elements that would come to define the Panerai aesthetic. Notably, the modified wire lugs that were replaced with robust lugs, meticulously welded to the case, represent a true transformation of the historic 47mm case of Ref. 3646 made in Florence at the time.

  Modified ref. 3646, mid 1960s.

Although this timepiece was powered by 16-line mechanical caliber, Panerai made the decision to adopt, starting from the GPF 2/56 model - The Egyptian 1956 - a caliber that ensured a lower frequency of recharges that favored a longer lifespan of the waterresistance standard. This caliber was the Angelus SF 240

With its 8-day power reserve, the manual-wind Angelus 240 movement allowed the watch to run continuously without the need for winding for a duration of 8-days. Another creation ahead of its time is the transparent case back that offers a clear view of the watch’s mechanical heartbeat. It was a daring choice made by none other than Giuseppe Panerai himself, with the sole purpose of showcasing the movement’s impressive long power reserve.

The historical Angelus caliber, discovered in the Panerai archives, prompted the Maison to create the unrepeatable one-of-a-kind Radiomir Guido Panerai & Figlio, named in honor of the first model produced in the original Panerai Laboratory

At the heart of this unique timepiece lies a very rare historical example of the Angelus SF240 movement, with a Glucydur® balance wheel, the very same deployed in Panerai’s watches 62 years ago. A caliber, specifically built for G. Paneraie Figlio, whose manufacturing dates back to June 1961 as evidenced by the original engraving on the movement’s plate.

More than just a simple reproduction of the original, the exclusive timepiece is a celebration of Panerai heritage and history. Key features of this special edition watch include solid welded lugs, a sandwich dial, the Marina Militare logo, Officine Panerai inscription, goldcolour hands, small seconds at the 9-hour mark, and a domed sapphire crystal.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These particularities stand out as they are inspired by the form and aesthetics of the transitional model Ref. 3646, an important milestone of Panerai’s continuous innovation in improving its instruments to meet the ever-changing needs of the military. The 47mm case is crafted from Panerai Platinumtech™, a Panerai material created to maintain platinum’s deep luster that is harder and significantly more resistant to scratching than traditional platinum.

The Radiomir Guido Panerai & Figlio also comes with made-in-Italy calf straps with Swiss-made screw trapezoidal white gold buckle. The second strap features a vintage construction that is longer in size with no taper and is crafted by Cuoierie Meccaniche Brelli, the original leather strap maker for the historical Officine Panerai. Adding a touch of versatility and a nod to historical authenticity, the timepiece comes with two case backs, one in modern see-through sapphire crystal and a second one in Plexiglas®, available upon request, as a homage to the original material.

This unique timepiece is presented in a packaging inspired by historic Panerai boxes, featuring a Radica wood exterior and an internal tray lined with black Alcantara. The box includes a storage space for the second vintage strap.

The box set that contains the heir to the Ref. 3646 “Modificata” is strongly inspired by that of the first Special Edition, the famous PAM21 Radiomir 47mm. Famous reference born in autumn 1997, with platinum case and historic movement from the late 1930s.

Panerai is partnering with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) since 2021 to develop ocean literacy activities as part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The collaboration between IOC-UNESCO and Panerai focus on developing a program of work around ocean literacy to ensure that citizens, stakeholders, and institutions understand their interaction with the ocean and can use this knowledge to develop transformative solutions toward building a more sustainable and equitable society.

PANERAI – Luminor Quaranta Luna Rossa 40 mm

OFFICINE PANERAI – Luminor Quaranta Bitempo Luna Rossa and Luminor Quaranta Steel DLC Luna Rossa Stainless Steel 40 mm - 2023

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With the 37th edition of the Americas Cup on the horizon, set to take place in autumn next year, the teams are well into their preparations. However, it’s not all gruelling sea races as team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy are celebrating their multi-year collaboration with Panerai with a fleet of new watches ahead of the big competition. This is the Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa 2023 collection for the Americas Cup.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

There are five timepieces in the collection including a time and date model, a GMT, a chronograph and a his & her pair of Luminor Dues. Since there’s a lot to discuss, let’s trim the sails and get under way.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
As part of the Luminor Quaranta sub-collection, this Luna Rossa model has a 40mm diameter case, putting it solidly in the small to mid-size end of the spectrum. It has the characteristic cushion shape that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever looked at a Panerai before with its circular bezel and the Luminor’s signature crown guard. As the name suggests, it’s made from steel with a DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating that makes it super tough and gives it a black colouration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial is relatively understated with a classy sunray finishing in a dark aquatic blue. It follows the navy and red colour scheme of the Luna Rossa by pairing that blue dial with a red small seconds hand at 9 o’clock, which is structurally mirrored at 3 by the date aperture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It’s also a sandwich dial, which means there are two layers with the bottom layer coated in lume and the top layer featuring cut-out markers to reveal the lume below.  That’s how the recessed look of the indexes is achieved.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beneath the surface of the Luminor Quaranta Steel DLC Luna Rossa for 2023 is the P.900 calibre, which is one that we’ll see multiple times in this article. It’s an automatic piece with a 3-day power reserve, high frequency of 28,800 vph and Incabloc anti-shock device. It’s priced at £8,000, which makes it the median price of the five watches here.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Luna Rossa 2023 collection is the Luminor Quaranta BiTempo Luna Rossa. Once again, it’s a Quaranta, which means it’s got a 40mm cushion case in steel this. However, this time the grey colour of the steel is left visible with a combination of polished and brushed finishes.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The contrast between the bare steel and DLC version is interesting because the finishing on the exposed metal gives it a more luxurious appearance without giving up too much in terms of durability.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Although, more important than the case in this instance is the dial, which is where the titular BiTempo complication is found. BiTempo roughly means ‘two time’ and in wristwatch terms that equates to a dual time zone function, evidenced by the presence of two hour hands on the central hand stack.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It’s a useful complication for regular travellers who need to keep track of the time in multiple places around the world. For sailors travelling the globe, its application is obvious.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Powering this edition is the P.900/GMT calibre, a modified version  of the P.900 with that additional GMT module. GMT is another name for dual time zone functions except that GMT watches traditionally use a 24-hour scale for their secondary zone while the BiTempo uses a 12-hour system.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beyond that, it has the same specs as the standard P.900, including crucially the 3-day power reserve. That also means it only has a slightly higher price than the non-GMT version, at US 9,600 $.
