ACADEMIA HOUR PLANET

The DeWitt brand is going back to basics, to its DNA: a man, a vision, an uncompromising passion for inventing mechanical machines. The Academia HOUR PLANET is the latest example of this micro-manufacture’s capacity to re-invent itself, an ideal means of showcasing the passage of time. A perfect marriage of the world of mechanics and the world of travel. This timepiece boasts an exceptional centrepiece: a GMT globe bordered by the signature DeWitt chain.

A lover of satellite images of the Earth, Jérôme de Witt has blended his passion for mechanics with the inspiration that has come from his travels. It was after looking out from the window of an aeroplane one day that Count Jérôme de Witt decided to incorporate a textured globe into a watch. The iconic DeWitt chain has been crafted entirely by hand from 192 components. The chain causes the globe to rotate according to the time zone one is in, with a day/night indicator.

The Academia HOUR PLANET watch is the perfect union between resolutely modern aesthetics and a highly technical piece, bringing together the most subtle colours, materials and finishes. In a pure contemporary spirit, it embraces the new design codes of the DeWitt micro-manufacture.

This timepiece features a mechanical movement with a 55-hour power reserve. Bordered by DeWitt’s famous imperial columns, the minimalist and highly embossed dial is decorated with a completely visible balance regulator that is suspended and held in place by a highly elevated bridge. The 46 mm case features a black alligator-skin strap with large scales, thereby creating a daring contrast between the assertive character of the Academia model and a fully realised aesthetic harmony.

Each detail has been carefully thought out, requiring a substantial investment of time. This new creation perfectly reflects the finishing standards adopted by the DeWitt Manufacture: the surfaces and hands have been manually chamfered, satin-brushed and polished. These touches display a high level of technical skill and a rare sense of depth. A rare piece, one where, to quote Leonardo da Vinci, the “details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail”.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This back-to-basics approach by DeWitt was key, and with it a simple message: smaller collections, with a threefold reduction in the number of models, and a greater emphasis on major pieces, like this new Academia HOUR PLANET with its distinctive characteristics like the famous imperial columns.

Going back to the very DNA of the brand’s passionate founder: Inventing Mechanical Machines.

DeWitt – ACADEMIA Slide Titanium

DeWittACADEMIA Slide Titanium 49mm Automatic

Academia Slide DeWitt's Playful Hours

Dragging, sliding, and now, toboggan-shaped: the creative hours of the DeWitt Manufacture are showcased on a new model, the highly original and playful Academia Slide. Directly inspired by Jérôme De Witt's passion for cars, it bears witness to the creative vitality of what remains one of the very last manufactures in Geneva to be 100% independent and family-run.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Observation, inspiration, a new timepiece: continuing its creative journey, the DeWitt manufacture presents an original, unusual, playful new creation: the Academia Slide.

Its story began with Jérôme De Witt's desire to display the time differently. While the manufacture has fully demonstrated its skill with traditional high-end timepieces, the Academia collection also lends itself to particularly bold creative exercises. The Slide is the latest illustration of this approach. Made entirely from titanium, this 49 mm piece was originally inspired by children's toboggans. It presents a progressive, effortless slide from top to bottom thanks to an intuitive use of gravity.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Academia Slide applies this basic physical principle to watchmaking in a ground-breaking way. Every hour is inscribed on a brass plate that slides along a track, guiding it to a horizontal position. It is this horizontal display alone that shows the current hour. Next, the two central hands indicate the minutes and seconds.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This simple, intuitive design is also highly energy efficient. The hour plates slide in a natural, fluid manner. They are all interconnected: as soon as an hour arrives at the flat position, its plate begins its return to a vertical position and the next plate begins its descent. This continuous progression of the hours, which never freeze even for a second, symbolises the elusive, ephemeral nature of time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The unusual star-shaped dial is a direct result of Jérôme DeWitt's passion for mechanics. The creative soul of the manufacture and passionate collector of historic automotive developments was inspired here by the legendary rotary engines central to vintage cars and aeroplanes from the early 20th century.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These engines ran extremely smoothly thanks to their considerable inertia, a property that is fully exploited in the Academia Slide. They were also more compact and lightweight than other systems. Again, the Academia Slide takes full advantage of this, offering a simpler (and therefore more reliable) watch construction of just 276 components, scarcely more than a traditional three-hand manufacture movement.

DeWitt – ACADEMIA Skeleton

DeWittACADEMIA Skeleton Rose Gold NEW

DeWitt’s new Academia Skeleton watch is the latest addition to the Geneva Manufacture’s series of emblematic watch creations.

The watchmaker returns to its roots by developing a new movement with a strong character that embodies DeWitt both in its aesthetics and in its functions.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                    BIG FOTO

For the manually wound skeleton movement, Jérôme de Witt has chosen a highly complex mathematical structure. The power reserve system is based on the satellite principle already created for the Tourbillon Differentiel model, which won an award in the innovation category at the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève in 2005. The power reserve is indicated by an arrow located on this differential, which is in constant rotation.

The power reserve, with its indicator at 1 o’clock, has been expanded to over 100 hours thanks to the use of a double barrel. The three-dimensional bridge in which it is housed is itself crafted in the form of a car wheel-rim, a field of inspiration that has often been explored by the brand.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                    BIG FOTO

The most distinctive particularity of the movement, however, lies in its bi-directional seconds at 7 o’clock.

The seconds hand changes direction after 30 seconds thanks to a disconnecting gear system, and performs an instantaneous jump that sends it in the opposite direction to mark the following 30 seconds. The seconds are therefore indicated in two different directions, which gives the seconds hand a totally new way of moving. The principle is that of windscreen-wipers of certain sophisticated cars, constantly moving backwards and forwards to clear the entire windscreen surface.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                    BIG FOTO

So as to highlight these disparate elements, each of which is marked out in its own way by a distinctive design and construction, the “black gold” colour tone skeleton displays a harmonious aesthetic that inspires a sense of purity. Great care and attention has been paid to the quality of the hand-crafted finishes and the bridges with their indented angles.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                    BIG FOTO

This manually wound movement is made up of 263 parts. It is housed in the new Academia case, with a diameter of 42.5 mm. The alternating rose gold and rubber serve to recreate the famous imperial columns that are a characteristic feature of the watchmaker. The total thickness of the case is only 10.3 mm.

On the case back, the sapphire crystal reveals the wheels sculptured in relief, giving the movement a sense of volume and perspective.

Like all DeWitt timepieces, the Academia Skeleton watch meets the very highest standards of finishing adopted by the Manufacture right from its origins: hand-crafted finishes, satin-brushed finishes, circular graining, polished chamfering and indented angles.

This latest and highly inventive watchmaking creation is a true embodiment of the DeWitt spirit.

DeWitt – Ladies Blue Empire ambiance

DeWitt LADIES Blue Empire Gold NEW

The DeWitt watchmaking Manufacture presents its latest creation, Blue Empire, a collection of jewellery watches dedicated to women.

Simple yet sophisticated, it is adorned with the most feminine details.

Its 36-mm diameter round case in 18-carat rose gold or 18-carat gold and steel is embellished with a timeless metal wristband with delicate jewellery fastenings.

The wristband of the rose gold model is set with a thin line of round diamonds at its centre.

The midnight blue dial is lit up by a guilloché sunray pattern decorated with 12 appliques indicating the hours. It is assembled by hand by the expert dial-makers of the DeWitt workshops, one of the rare Manufactures to create the dials for its watches in-house.

The DeWitt imperial columns have been creatively revisited to highlight the dial, circling the 12 indexes indicating the time. A modern evolution of one of the distinctive features of the Manufacture’s watchmaking collections.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                     BIG FOTO

Two open-worked hands in the form of double-edged swords indicate the hours and minutes, while the seconds are indicated by a central second hand.

The Blue Empire watch's crown in rose gold and blue lacquer is surrounded by a delicate circular row of 20 round diamonds.

The watch’s extremely successful finishes and the alternation of polished gold, diamonds and blue embellishments in particular give it an added touch of refinement and modernism.

In total, 150 round diamonds illuminate the Blue Empire watch in gold.
The model is available with a quartz movement or an automatic movement.

With this latest creation, the DeWitt Manufacture wished to offer women a collection of jewellery watches with a resolutely contemporary aesthetic.

DeWitt – CLASSIC JEWELLERY Moon Abstraction Edition

DeWitt Metiers d'Art CLASSIC JEWELLERY Moon Abstraction Limited Edition NEW

DeWitt pays tribute to the artistic crafts and adorns its Classic
Jewellery watch with an exceptional dial of celestial inspiration

With this third creation, DeWitt pays an elegant tribute to the spirit of majesty and freedom of the Emperor Napoleon, a direct ancestor of Jérôme de Witt, the founder of the Manufacture. No paint is used, and the dials are crafted from powdered pigments.

Powdered diamond, platinum, gold, pearl, lapis lazuli and other gemstones create a unique, delicately ethereal design.

After its first two dials inspired by the Japanese spring, the DeWitt Manufacture has chosen the
Classic Jewellery watch model for this abstract interpretation of a lunar landscape.

With its pure lines and slender imperial columns, the watch’s 18-carat rose gold case highlights the
delicate refinement of the dial. The 60 diamonds adorning the bezel emphasise the brilliance of this
celestial design, crafted from powdered precious stones.

Suffused with a presence that is both natural and poetic, the new Classic Jewellery “Moon
Abstraction”
model forms part of the collection of ladies’ watches that will be unveiled by the DeWitt
Manufacture during the course of 2016.

In 2016, Swiss Manufacture DeWitt is celebrating women, with a collection of jewellery watches that will be unveiled throughout the year.

The first two models exclusively devoted to women pay tribute to Japanese artistic crafts.

These exceptional dials were produced in partnership with a Japanese artist, trained since the age of five in the ancient art of calligraphy, painting and the history of Japanese art by the great masters.

Her utterly unique technique involves combining precious pigments with Indian ink to produce decoration. Powdered diamond, platinum, gold, pearl, agate or other gemstones give her creations a particular sheen and subtle, textured effects.

With these first creations, the artist wanted to pay a noble and elegant tribute to the spirit of majesty and freedom of the Emperor Napoleon, a direct ancestor of Jérôme de Witt, the founder of DeWitt.

The Golden Afternoon jewellery watch, well-known for its floral dial in mother-of-pearl marquetry, features a delicate design of butterflies and flowers, formed of powdered diamond, pearl, platinum, gold, lapis lazuli, agate and other gemstones.

The blue and violet tinted dial adorns a white-gold case set with round diamonds and enhanced with a shiny blue alligator wristband. The hour and minute hands, shaped like finely sculpted angel wings, and the seconds hand, adorned with a small flame, are in perfect harmony with the lightness of the decoration.

DeWitt – Twenty-8-Eight Skeleton Tourbillon

DeWitt Twenty-8-Eight Skeleton Tourbillon White Gold Limited Edition NEW

Transparency and precision

The DeWitt calibre DW8028s uses age-old, recognized and highly reliable technical parameters in its construction: 18’000 A/h, a variable-inertia balance, a 44° angle escapement and 72 hours power reserve.

Entirely produced in-house, this manually wound Tourbillon is equipped with a Swiss anchor escapement and a spiral made out of an unbreakable, self-compensating, non-oxidizing, anti-magnetic alloy and sequenced at 2.5 Hz. The perfect homogeneity and incredibly precise flat rolling of the Hairspring (0,0001 mm) guarantee an extremely high precision to the mechanism.

The balance, as well as the escape wheel and the anchor are made of 18-carat yellow gold.

Architectural strength and finesse

The Twenty-8-Eight Skeleton Tourbillon does not intend to compete with the ultra-skinny and fragile skeletons where as much material as possible was taken out of the construction. The architecture of DeWitt’s skeleton remains deliberately strong and is therefore very well balanced with the design of the case which features 48 imperial columns. A typical feature of practically all DeWitt masterpieces.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...         BIG FOTO

The carved-out main plate, a sand-brushed nickel silver base with blue PVD surface finishing. Meandering across the movement, the lucky observer will suddenly land on a stunning skeletonised “W” logo positioned at 9 o’clock. The play on depths, perspectives and layers is a typical feature of DeWitt designs and the Twenty-8-Eight Skeleton Tourbillon is no exception. The skeletonised “W” logo is actually duplicated on the lower part of the movement in order to offer these interesting volumes when admiring the movement from either side of the watch.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...         BIG FOTO

But however robust the foundations, your eyes will inevitably be dragged deep into the movement and the captivating finesse of its ticking mechanics. You will marvel at the Tourbillon as it gracefully rotates on its axis, held in place by a long, slender and circular-grained Art Déco bridge.

An authentic piece of art

The barrel, positioned at 12 o’clock, is also skeletonised in order to reveal the interior of the motor.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...         BIG FOTO

The shape given to the open-worked barrel was inspired by the design of vintage car steering wheels. As the barrel wheel gently turns with the unwinding of the spring, the stems of the upper part will glide over the stems of the lower part. Yet another interesting play on layers by DeWitt.

A successful match

The Twenty-8-Eight Skeleton Tourbillon is housed in a 43 mm round case made in 18-carat white gold. Presenting particularly comfortable proportions with redesigned lugs and slightly more discrete imperial columns displayed on its flanks, it remains instantly recognizable and true to DeWitt’s strong DNA.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...         BIG FOTO

Its balanced design offers the necessary combination of character and refinement for a successful wedding with the architectural lines of the skeleton movement.

Dewitt and its passion for exceptional

The Twenty-8-Eight Skeleton Tourbillon fully complies with the very demanding finishing norms of the DeWitt Manufacture. Entirely hand-made, the treatment and finishing-work on this piece are of a rare quality. Case, plate, bridges, wheels and even miniature screws are all angled, polished, satin-finished and treated to perfection in the patient and meticulous hands of our watchmakers.

Last but not least, a particularity of all watches coming out of the DeWitt Manufacture, every high complication watch is entirely assembled, adjusted and tested by a single master watchmaker.
