“At IWC Schaffhausen, we have a long history with the film industry, most importantly reflected in our support of film festivals around the world, including the Tribeca Film Festival®. Our desire to support film festivals and young filmmakers is because we believe in the art of storytelling,” says Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “It is the foundation of our work. Each new timepiece starts with a story we wish to convey to our customers. With the new Portugieser Annual Calendar dedicated to the Tribeca Film Festival, we are able to not only share a story about IWC’s heritage and craftsmanship, but also our commitment to film and the talented people within the film industry.”

A STAR IS BORN

The Portugieser Annual Calendar Edition “Tribeca Film Festival 2016” (Ref. 503506) is powered by the IWC-manufactured 52850 calibre. Located at “12 o’clock” on the dial, IWC’s annual calendar shows the month, date and day in three separate, semicircular windows. The “American” order in which the date is shown was not only necessary from a technical and design point of view, but is also an homage to F. A. Jones, IWC’s American founder. With its voluminous 44.2-millimetre case, grooved bezel, classic railway-track-style chapter ring, slim feuille hands and Arabic numerals, the Portugieser Annual Calendar very closely resembles the original Portugieser of 1939, a veritable design icon.

The dial is a subtle slate colour which embodies the New York City streets to honour the Tribeca Film Festival, while the small seconds subdial and the power reserve display are Bordeaux-coloured, symbolizing the red carpets – a glamorous mainstay of the film industry often visible around the world, from film premieres to award shows. The oscillating weight bears the logo of the Tribeca Film Festival, and the milled lettering 01/50 is a reminder that only very few watch lovers will be able to secure this extra-special edition.

COMMITMENT TO CREATIVITY

In addition to the limited edition, IWC will show support to the festival by making a donation to Tribeca Film Institute (TFI). TFI is a non-profit arts organization that supports film-makers with grants, professional development and resources, while also helping students to discover film and film-making. The donation, in the amount of USD 100,000, will be split between TFI and one individual who is chosen by a jury as this year’s “IWC Filmmaker Award” recipient. The award will be presented at the Annual “For the Love of Cinema” Gala during the festival on Thursday, 14 April 2016. The Filmmaker award will consist of a cash prize of USD 50,000 and will provide finishing funds to a feature-length narrative with technical excellence based on the candidate’s innovative approach to cinema and character, as well as year-long film-maker mentorship by TFI. The IWC Filmmaker Award will channel IWC’s passion for innovation and technical inventiveness to support the next generation of film-makers as they realize their creative vision, and help them to reach audiences worldwide.

“Given the similarities between watchmaking and filmmaking – the elaborate mechanics, master craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail and timing – it is no surprise that
IWC supports film festivals across the globe,” says Anna Ponder, Executive Director of TFI. “Tribeca Film Institute has proven to be a rich creative breeding ground for new talent in the film industry and we are so pleased to continue to be a dedicated partner”.
