More than a watch, Ulysse is a work of art on the wrist, an aesthetic inspiration by the Art Deco school and the organic beauty of the marine universe, showcasing Aqua Marines of perfect clarity. The fruit of several years of research and a three-year development phase, Ulysse is the result of personal introspection and prodigious technical mastery.

An odyssey of friendship and horology

This collaboration between Alexandre Beauregard and Vianney Halter, which originated at Baselworld in 2019, reveals a shared vision of watchmaking as an art form in its own right. Alexandre Beauregard, with a decade dedicated to women's floral collections, join forces with Vianney Halter, recognized for his avant-garde approach, in the creation of an unexpected watch that blends organic beauty with mechanical precision.

Ulysses is a work of love and the testimony of a creative journey where technique and aesthetics converge to forge an exceptional art piece. The encounter with Vianney, a larger-than-life character animated by a whimsical spark and perpetual youthfulness, deeply resonated with Alexandre Beauregard: “It was an instant connection with a kindred spirit.”

Vianney Halter.
A name that resonates powerfully in the world of independent watchmaking, not only as a watchmaker-creator but also as a visionary who has pushed the boundaries of innovation and been crowned three times at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The inventor of watches with advanced complications, Halter has left a mark on the industry with the famous ANTIQUA, his first creation, launched in 1998, the only one of its kind in the world, a perpetual calendar arranged in a scattered manner on the case.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Vianney Halter also created the OPUS 3 for Harry Winston, released in 2003, and the ANNIVERSARY, a limited edition marking the 20th anniversary of his creations, released in 2018; it is the first watch with the VH122 caliber. He then captivated the watchmaking world with the DEEP SPACE TOURBILLON, launched in 2013, making him a living legend in the world of independent watchmaking. This is a central tourbillon with 3 axes.

As the inventor of watches with advanced complications, Halter has more recently made his mark on the industry with the 👉 DEEP SPACE RESONANCE, a 3-axis tourbillon equipped with 2 resonant balances, created in 2021.

For Alexandre Beauregard, who has created his own aesthetic universe in watchmaking and jewelry based on a mastery of lapidary art “working with Vianney Halter has been pure joy.”

Singular concept, exclusive design

Ulysse immediately captures attention with the boldness of its dial, a Beauregard hallmark. originating from a creative concept of a stained glass with precious stones in which the lead is replaced by Gold, the captivating work of the gems with its 68 miniature components of Aqua Marines selected for their purity and delicate color, meticulously hand-cut and nestled within an intricately laid gold lacework of fascinating finesse.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each stone, patiently shaped and fitted by hand in the brand’s Montreal workshop, reflects light in a unique way thanks to a disk of mother-of-pearl cleverly positioned beneath the stone. This creates a play of light that further enhances the artistry in the applied technique. The hands, off-set and curved to follow the arch of the dial, appear to dance above this exquisite mosaic of light.

For Beauregard, each detail embodies a world unto itself, from the design to the meticulous hand-finishing of every component that grants each watch its distinctive signature. The dial’s lines seamlessly flow onto the case, elegantly shaped with subtle waves, evoking a sense of natural movement and radiant fluidity.

The unusual degree of finishing and decoration of a Vianney Halter movement

A measure of the implicit trust that underpins this collaboration, Vianney gave Alexandre free rein to lavishly dress and decorate his famous mysterious automatic movement that celebrates 20 years of Vianney Halter watchmaking creations.

The choice of maillechort, a noble alloy favored over brass for its superior quality, exemplifies Halter's dedication to the longevity of his creations. It not only ensures the watch’s durability but also that it can be easily maintained – a mark of all the care and respect such an exceptional object deserves.

The caliber’s innovative design is highlighted by a patented 'invisible' rotor that allows for an unobstructed view of its intricate inner workings.

With a power reserve of 56 hours, its ingenious architecture allows for the addition of extra modules. For the Beauregard Ulysse watch, this translated into a reinvention of the time display. Here, the hour and minute hands rotate not from the center.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Several months of meticulous planning, drawing, and prototyping went into adapting the movement. The fluid aesthetic achieved reverberates throughout: from the bridges whose shape celebrate the the rhythm of the tides, to the 30 clear sapphire jewels for chromatic homogeneity, and back to the rounded anglage on each wheel – all the visible hand-finished details play off each other. This work of love transformed Vianney's movement into a distinctive heart that beats only for the Beauregard watch.

Impossible not to mention Dzevad, who, from his workshop in Sainte-Croix, machined the extravagant components, and Philippe Narbel, who, with his team at Manufactor in L’Abbaye, masterfully decorated the components by hand.

The 41mm case in 18K rose gold, with its domed sapphire, engraved screw-down back with gold engraving highlighted in blue lacquer, and crown adorned with an Aquamarine, is fitted with a sober, stitchless chestnut alligator strap. It is water resistant to 3 ATM (30 meters). The ‘quick release’ interchangeable strap system, together with the rose gold pin buckle, follows through with the creator’s unparalleled attention to detail.

Ultimately, the creation of Ulysse is a human adventure, a journey among friends, weaving together the bonds of friendship and the art of watchmaking.

Louis Erard – Exceptional Le Regulateur Louis Erard x Atelier OÏ Edition

Louis ErardExceptional Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Atelier Limited Edition 2021

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Louis Erard marks a new stage in the accessible creation watch, with a fresh look at all the crafts that make up watchmaking. For this new collaboration, Louis Erard turns to architecture and design with atelier oï, a regional company that has been shining internationally for 30 years, and a radiant watch, too.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

How to materialise space and time? How to materialise the contemporary spirit of the watch when connected technology has disconnected watchmaking from its primary necessity: telling the time?

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Louis Erard invited atelier oï to look into the question and the answer is a new original dial, the third part of the series of collaborations already co-signed by Alain Silberstein and Vianney Halter.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Once more based on the emblematic model of the Maison: the regulator. Once again with the desire to bring together key players in traditional watchmaking culture. And again with the desire to bring together key players in Swiss know-how: atelier oï and Louis Erard are both regional companies of international stature.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Breaking new ground, the collaboration leaves the strict field of watchmaking, since atelier oï works in the fields of architecture and design. The invitation did not come about by accident, however. The workshop, based in La Neuveville, a satellite town of Neuchâtel, has been close to the watchmaking industry since its creation precisely thirty years ago and the watchmaking world has played a major part in the development of the company. Going back as far as the 1990s, there has also been a warm relationship between atelier oï and Louis Erard, as illustrated by the current manager Manuel Emch, who began his career with an internship at atelier oï and who has collaborated with it ever since.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In three decades, atelier oï has become a brand in itself, reputed around the world, rewarded with more than thirty distinctions which illustrate its uniqueness. Moreover, the name, oï, is borrowed from the Russian Troika, a word that symbolises the energy generated by a trio, in this case, Aurel Aebi, Armand Louis and Patrick Reymond, the three co-founders.

Talents, an anniversary, connections, Le Régulateur Louis Erard, the planets were therefore aligned for this collaboration to emerge.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The objective, for Louis Erard, is once again to break down barriers in the world and make accessible what is often reserved for specialist clientele. With this added challenge of plunging without a net into contemporary creation, with all that entails of references, reflections, diversions and shocks.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Atelier oï proceeded in a basic way: "To radiate from the centre outwards." Taking care to reduce the technical vocabulary as much as possible, reminiscent of the shape of a sundial. The result is a surface engraved with asymmetrical rays, the light of which reveals reflections and contrasts - echoing the passion of the members of atelier oï for the material and the play of light. The art of engraving being expressed here in its essence: drawn lines. These lines create a space, to which the hands add the dimension of time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Le Régulateur has naturally imposed its own rhythm: the hands (hour, minute, second) become centres from which rays emerge, generating visual kinetics that each movement of the wrist animates, giving the two-dimensional dial the depth of a radiant architecture. A pure work of art, which nothing can break, not even the Louis Erard logo.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Reading the time comes out somewhat dematerialised - you have to mentally reconstruct the puzzle of hour angles - but all the links are not broken: the minute-circle still appears around the edge of the dial, with a more pronounced line every five minutes and exactly sixty segments. A nod from atelier oï to the smartphone generation: “Today, the object watch has another meaning."

VIANNEY HALTER – Deep Space Resonance Tourbillon

VIANNEY HALTERDeep Space Resonance Three Axis Tourbillon - 2021

 DEEP SPACE RESONANCE PROTOTYPE
A NEW TECHNICAL DEVICE IS COMING BACK TO EARTH FROM OUTER SPACE

A lifelong dream is being realized at last !

Vianney Halter, the space and time travel watchmaker, is happy to introduce you to the new technical breakthrough at the heart of his emblematic 3 axis tourbillon : the Deep Space Resonance. Vianney reingeneered the tourbillon cage in order to integrate two acoustically synchronized balance wheels. A technical challenge and unheard mechanical prowess.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This creation is a tribute to undulatory physics, galaxy-shaking events and our Universe’s very fundamental mechanisms. After multiple years in research and development, creative phases and external influences, Vianney shows a unique system that accurately depicts a true physical phenomenon.

INSPIRATIONS AND PHYSICS

The idea of creating an acoustically resonant double-balance time instrument emerged in Vianney’s mind in 1996 when he started learning to play the piano.

When attuning the keys where three harmonic strings overlap, he noticed an energy exchange between the strings that forced them to resonate. Just like on the tuning fork, the resonance mechanism seemed to depend on the fixed base through which the energy flows. Vianney felt there could be a similar way to synchronize two balance wheels.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As he was doing some research on the subject, Vianney found early 1800s blueprints of Abraham Louis Breguet’s attempts to achieve resonance. The schematics showed devices allowing for the fine tuning of the distance that separated the two balance wheels, which were in this case using a fundamentally different coupling than the piano or tuning fork. Breguets’s works were based on the interactions between the balance wheel rims and the air between them, using the air as a fluid gearing. In this case the size of the gap, air viscosity and rotation directions were critical. Air behaved as a clutch and only one rotation was allowed. Without air, there could be no resonance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the other hand in order for the acoustic resonance phenomenon to occur, waves are of utmost importance. Using a linkage of some sorts, waves could be transmitted from one balance to the other. By having both spirals attached to a well designed common bridge, the two oscillators could influence each other and attain resonance, whichever direction the balances were turning.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In order to form solid bases for the mechanical groundworks, Vianney needed to study the preexisting resonance watches, then craft an instrument that could demonstrate the possibility of resonance from coupling two oscillators. He then started collecting every chronometric object linked to undulatory phenomena he could, aiming to build such a demonstrator.

The final construction will be a tribute to all the scientists and craftsmen who developped theories, and imagined and built machines to share them.

The workshop changes into a laboratory

In 2007, Vianney Halter starts the construction of the demonstrator he has been imagining since 2005. To build his movement, he uses two identical russian deck watches that give him identical gear trains. For the two balances to resonate, he needs the two oscillators to be as similar as possible, and links them using a solid bridge, like in a tuning fork.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

------------

As day to day watchmaking and manufacture began to consume Vianney’s time more and more he had to set his experimental works aside. However as time passes, the urge to return to it grows stronger. In 2012, Vianney buys an antique clock from watchmaker Langlois, crafted in 1660. With the help of horological expert Jean-Claude Sabrier, he discovers the clock is in fact one that Christiaan Huygens subcontracted to various craftsmen to demonstrate his novel isochronism theory. Beyond confirming his theory, the scientist and father of modern horology witnessed the resonance of multiple pendulums when installed on a single frame. For Vianney, this experiment was the initiator of the horological acoustic resonance idea.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In 2016, a major scientific breakthrough pushes Vianney forward with the resonance. Almost a century after Albert Einstein relativity theory, gravitational waves were detected, confirming the existence of two collapsing black holes and sending ripples through the scientific community and Sci-Fi buffs alike.

Space-Time is the fabric of our Universe. Heavy objects bend it and deform it and when they accelerate or collide, those objects generate waves that propagate through the cosmos at light speed, in all directions. Those waves perturbate the whole Universe, and finally were measured on Earth using a resonance based space-time seismograph.

This discovery was so important to Vianney he was determined to finish the research about acoustic horological resonance. By trying multiple configurations for the coupling of the two balances, he eventually finds one that allows acoustic resonance without relying on aerodynamics.

At the same time, a new idea and new challenge emerged. In 2011 Vianney dreamt of an object designed to remind us of our four dimensions during our stellar travels: the Deep Space Tourbillon. In 2013 the watch was born – a 3 axis central tourbillon to show you the physical dimensions, surrounded by the display of our 4th dimension, time.

With these 4 dimensions making the elastic fabric of our universe, being warped and reshaped by gravitational waves, it appeared evident that the resonating oscillators will be placed at the center of the Deep Space Tourbillon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The study of the demonstrators configurations allowed to define the tuning fork configuration in which will be the two balances. To prevent the wave dissipation, Vianney chooses specific, solid materials, and minimizes the length and complexity of the path the wave must travel. This led to the configuration in which the two spirals are mounted opposite in front of each other. Using a rigid shared bridge for the two spirals, Vianney made sure that the resulting resonance was a genuine behavior, not a functional artefact.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Work and perseverance eventually bore fruit, and at the beginning of 2019 the two balances in the demonstrator were beating as one. The behavior was stable and allowed Vianney to start the construction of a wrist worn model: the Deep Space Resonance.

Each development is made of steps, and one could see the original Deep Space Tourbillon as a step, a host to be transcended by the resonance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

(Original Deep Space Tourbillon👆)

Those four dimensions are the basis of our human condition but are not an absolute. The resonance found its way in the Deep Space to show us that the fabric of the Universe is, in fact, the canvas on which things interfere, interact, and resonate.

DEEP SPACE RESONANCE PROTOTYPE

The Deep Space Resonance Prototype immense works took over the entirety of 2020. Vianney built it to check that the acoustic synchronization correctly functions when worn on the wrist.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thanks to the three axis rotation, every detail on the structure is visible. The complexity of the mechanism is highlighted by a unique and light architectural construction. The 42 polished curved pillars that hold the bridges are a testimony to Achille Benoît’s beautiful 1939 marine chronometer. Every part of the mechanism is traditionally decorated and refined by hand for a breathtaking effect. Despite the apparent complexity, the technological architecture was kept at the most simple and efficient.

Nothing is superfluous

The axis structure is layered in concentric cages: The innermost cage holds the balances and weighs 0.6 grams for 162 parts. This cage rotates inside the traverse in 60 seconds. The traverse weighs 2.8 grams and rotates around it’s horizontal axis in 6 minutes. The traverse is mounted in the cradle, that rotates on it’s vertical axis in 30 minutes. The whole 3 axis system counts 371 individual parts.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The balances are nominally 21‘600 vph but in reality they vary a little. Each balance will transmit its motion to the shared bridge which will in turn affect the other balance. This way, both balances will influence each other, and quickly and reliably reach a common frequency. In turn, this makes the whole regulating system more accurate.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Deep Space Resonance Prototype is a manually wound, 65h power reserve watch. The balances start to resonate as soon as the energy is sufficient to set the balances in motion, and stay synchronized until all motion stops. The balances will synchronize and oscillate at the same time, but not necessarily in the same direction at the same time. This will define the resonance mode.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The mode depends on the position the balances were occupying when they started beating, and will keep this mode until the end of the power reserve. The next time the watch is wound, the balances may start beating in a different mode, and will offer a new view to the resonance phenomenon.

The dial was developed as a no-nonsense tool, and directly inspired by the Vernier calliper. The Hours and Quarters can be read in the top aperture. At the bottom aperture one can read the supplemental minutes by finding where the marks match the best.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For the final realizations of this technical device, the reading of the time will be easier thanks to a fascinating dial specifically designed to match the resonance principles. The power reserve will be drastically enhanced.

In the meantime, please enjoy this first wrist worn acoustic resonance. The beauty of the mirror construction, architectural symmetry, light reflections and finishing contrasts give an magical sense to the mechanical ballet. As in mirages, you will be entranced by the shimmering of wheels and pillars. There will be no up, no down, left or right. You will be lost in the resonance as in the middle of the cosmos.

Watchmaking is the way Vianney expresses himself and shares. With this construction he wanted to resonate with everyone surrounding him and share his fascination for science and mechanics. As a watchmaker, he claims no absolute scientific certainty, and rather offers a beautiful step upon which future generations will build.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When I imagine and build demonstrators like this one, I learn a lot from it. Each mechanical challenge helps me understand our Universe more and more. Every time, I marvel like a child facing it’s complexity and subtlety. What I like the most is understanding, crafting, testing, and in the end sharing. Sharing is the ultimate goal of my work as a watchmaker.“

All of this is illustrated in his first model, the “Antiqua”, a perpetual calendar presented in 1998. This watch was instantly regarded as a "relic of the future", reinforcing Halter's creativity and allowing him to enter the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI).

His years as an independent watchmaker continuing the art of watchmaking and his contribution to the modern horological landscape have already earned him nine awards. He has created around ten models of wristwatches, but the high level of workmanship they demand means their production is confidential. Indeed, under 500 pieces created by Vianney Halter have been produced to this day.
