A radical expression of time by Rudis Sylva

To mark its 20th anniversary, Rudis Sylva is unveiling the RS11, a creation that is both a statement and a culmination. Conceived as a synthesis of two decades of research and mastery, it embodies a singular vision of watchmaking in which aesthetic power and mechanical rigour are held in precise balance. Available in titanium and pink gold, its volumes, materials and architecture combine to create a bold design language in which manual skill and technology engage in an intense dialogue, whilst retaining a deep respect for the Maison’s Jura roots.

Since 2006, under the leadership of Jacky Epitaux, Rudis Sylva has developed an independent and committed approach to Haute Horlogerie. Rooted in the Swiss Jura, the Maison continues the tradition of the farmer-watchmakers, whose craft, standards and close connection to the land it perpetuates.

Each creation takes shape within a unique local ecosystem, where artisans with rare expertise work within a 20-kilometre radius, ensuring proximity, consistency and complete control over every stage. Guilloché work, engraving, enamelling, bevelling: all carried out by hand, respecting tradition and with an assured creative freedom.

At the heart of its identity, the patented and unprecedented Harmonious Oscillator reworks the principles of regulation, delivering remarkable stability and precision. More than a mere innovation, it embodies a desire to develop the watchmaking art without ever forsaking its roots.

Its principle runs counter to the very foundations of classical theory. Here, any load applied to the balance had traditionally been prohibited, but Rudis Sylva developed a novel system: two complete toothed balance wheels, mechanically linked and driven by a single escapement. A bold design, which connoisseurs associated with the innovative spirit of the tourbillon. Unveiled in Basel in 2009, this breakthrough immediately attracted the attention of the industry’s leading figures. Independent master watchmakers, established brands and technical development specialists recognised the significance of this unique approach.

Rudis Sylva is celebrating its 20th anniversary with two flagship launches, unveiled throughout the year, starting with the RS11, unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2026. This square-shaped piece, designed in 2011 but never released, is available in titanium and pink gold, and was created entirely with the aim of providing optimal comfort for the wrist. It incorporates the Harmonious Oscillator, featuring two interconnected toothed balance wheels driven by a single escapement, ensuring identical amplitude and instantaneous correction of the effects of gravity within a cage that completes a full rotation every 60 seconds.

In the titanium version, a vibrant palette unfolds, where purple evolves in a gradient from the deepest to the brightest tones, revealing violet accents with delicate fuchsia undertones. This chromatic richness is expressed at every level, from the guilloché main plate enhanced with a black-purple PVD treatment, to the hour and minute dial, and the three-quarter bridge. This interplay of tones contrasts with the assertive presence of the gears, whose silvery hues with luminous reflections reveal every detail, in particular the Harmonious Oscillator, its two balance wheels and its large bridge, as well as the hands, Roman numerals, indices, the outline of the upper dial and the titanium case. The whole creates a subtle balance between visual intensity and mechanical precision, in a spirit that is bold yet still a watchmaking classic.

Like the other models in the collection, the RS11 showcases regional watchmaking expertise: its main plate features hand guilloché work applied using a “straight-line” engine to create a linear pattern of pyramids. This operation involves the simultaneous use of both the left and right hands to operate the two spindles of the guilloché engine.

The amount of material removed is minimal – around 6 hundredths of a millimetre – and the main plate must be turned over three times, making for an even more complex execution. Georges Brodbeck, neighbour and friend of the watch brand, winner of the Gaïa Prize awarded by the Musée international d’horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and a world-renowned authority in the field of guilloché work, crafted the two prototype main plates exhibited at Watches & Wonders 2026.

The main plate, barrel bridge and all the other bridges of the RS11 square model are hand-bevelled, reflecting a rare level of craftsmanship. Bevelling is performed using gentian wood, harvested from pastures at an altitude of 1000 metres and dried in late autumn. Its finish, ideal for a mirror polished look, enhances every edge of the watch components.

This gentian root, harvested in autumn and distilled, subtly evokes the Maison’s deep roots in its local region. The bevelling of the Harmonious Oscillator bridge, carried out entirely by hand, takes up to 25 hours and involves creating 28 interior angles in the titanium, a very demanding material, demonstrating the extreme precision of this craftsmanship.

The arms of the main plate, which pass through the barrels, are angled at 180°, lending the structure a smooth, rounded appearance. The recesses are polished by hand and the gear train passages are circular-grained by hand. The surfaces and sides, alternately sand-blasted and brushed, create a subtle interplay of textures.

Housed in a 43 mm square case, the RS11, water-resistant to 30 metres, features a domed crystal, a case-back crystal and a side crystal, allowing the movement to be admired from every angle. All three crystals have an anti-reflective coating on both sides for optimum readability. The polishing of the case is particularly intricate, with a horizontal satin finish on the sides that stops precisely at the edge, while the case middle features an interplay of alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces. The timepiece is presented on a genuine alligator leather strap with large scales, backed with a leather lining and mounted between horns set 25 mm apart. A version without alligator leather is also available.

Rudis Sylva underscores its discreet yet demanding vision, where each timepiece becomes an expression of time, place and craftsmanship. Sincere, uncompromising watchmaking, driven by the constant pursuit of accuracy and authenticity.

Rudis Sylva – RS23 Harmonious Oscillator Edition

Rudis SylvaRS23 Harmonious Oscillator  - Unique Limited Edition 2023

"An invention as important as the Breguet Tourbillon"
"Better than a Tourbillon"
"The Tourbillon reference"

These are just some of the comments from master watchmakers and industry journalists since the Harmonious Oscillator was created!

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This patented invention with two toothed balances immediately cancels out the effects of gravity when a watch is in the vertical position, unlike a conventional Tourbillon, which needs a whole minute to do so.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Hailing from the Jura Arc, the brand unveiled its invention at Baselworld in 2009. Watch enthusiasts rushed to discover this toothed-balance movement, which is based on technology that goes against all established watchmaking theories. An examination of this revolutionary device reveals the subtlety of the system with two balance-springs which are set in opposition and deploy in turn.

The negative chronometric value of one spring balance is compensated for simultaneously by the positive value of the other spring balance, which totally cancels out the effect of the Earth's gravity on the precision of the watch.

RS 23, the natural next step for the Harmonious Oscillator

Today, Rudis Sylva is launching a simplified version of the Harmonious Oscillator which is, nonetheless, equally effective in terms of combating gravity.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The toothed, geared balances are fixed and no longer rotate once per minute in a 360-degree cage as in the "Tourbillon" version.

This simpler execution with two connected balances also allows all chronometric anomalies caused by the Earth's gravitational pull to be cancelled out simultaneously, and therefore remains more precise than a conventional Tourbillon which needs 60 seconds to compensate for the effects of gravity.

Rudis Sylva, a name with Latin roots

Rudis Sylva, a name with Latin roots Rudis from Ruedin Jean, the pioneer born in Franches-Montagnes around 1400, and Sylva, the forest.

Rudis Sylva is the old name for the Swiss village of Les Bois in the Franches-Montagnes district, 12 km from La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1900, some 600 of its 1450 inhabitants were watchmakers! The first recorded watchmakers in the village date to 1750. The most well-known of these are the Clémence and Baume families, who opened stores in London to sell their products, which included timepieces with chimes. The Rudis Sylvains – as inhabitants of the village Les Bois were known – passed on their watchmaking expertise throughout the Jura area over many centuries.

Exceptional finishes

The Harmonious Oscillator is a patented movement developed solely by the brand. Whilst the movements are, first and foremost, technical by nature, they are also all decorated by hand, showcasing the skills practised by the craftspeople of the Jura for centuries. When the brand was created, it was the regional expertise that was showcased rather than that of any specific watchmaker.

A Rudis Sylva watch merits a magnifying glass!

This reveals the magnificence of the guilloche work, engraving, bevelling in the inward corners, sunray or circular graining decoration and the other finishes that enhance the Harmonious Oscillator.

Guilloche work

Hand guilloche work has been showcased since the very first Rudis Sylva collection in 2009. The ever-decreasing pyramids designed by Georges Brodbeck, another neighbour from Franches-Montagnes, are extremely difficult to create, and lend prestige and elegance to the RS 10, RS 12 and RS 16 collections.

Click, to see the large size.    BIG FOTO

The “Legendary Brodbeck”, as he was affectionately known by his colleagues at the Technicum in La Chaux-de-Fonds (who claimed he was such a gifted engineer that he could dismantle then reassemble his moped during break time), has created a “flinqué” decoration for the RS 23 collection.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This particular type of guilloche work is created with a special turning engine equipped with various roses which enable a multitude of decorations to be made. This finish is used to enhance the bridge of the Harmonious Oscillator. .

The engraving is done by hand and using an endmill; the bridges are also hand-bevelled and, apart from the escapement, the barrel springs and the jewels, all the components are machined expressly for the Rudis Sylva calibre.

Rudis Sylva, utterly different and utterly exclusive!

The Jura-based brand is a lesser-known – an exceptionally exclusive – gem! Its DNA has roots in numerous sources:

The name of the brand comes from the village of Les Bois, located in the cradle of Swiss watchmaking, where several of the industry’s leading lights were born. We can cite the Baumes (which became Baume & Mercier), the Clémences, owners of stores in London, the Huots, which became Nivarox-Far, the Baumanns, which became ETA, and other families famous far and wide.

The Harmonious Oscillator, developed and made more reliable between 2006 and 2010, has been patented and garnered huge acclaim from master watchmakers. It is considered by some as a key invention in the quest for accuracy.

Rudis Sylva decided to develop its movement in its entirety. It is rare for independent brands to create an entire movement. They generally purchase a base calibre that they transform, using an existing mechanism with tried and tested reliability.

Those involved with the brand are native to the cradle of watchmaking and can rely on a network of renowned skills. They are the descendants of the region’s “watchmaking farmers” or “window watchmakers”, as they used to be known; they are humble by nature, and are driven by a never-ending quest for true craftsmanship.

 Watches and Wonders 2023

The new RS 23 was unveiled at the Watches and Wonders trade fair which the brand attended for the second time. Within the "Carré des Horlogers", an environment conducive to innovation, Rudis Sylva was able to allow its hosts to discover a Harmonious Oscillator that was different to – yet as appealing as – the previous models.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Almost 15 years on from the launch of its first timepiece, the brand has created a new simplified version that is just as appealing as the previous models.

The RS 23 collection is available in a rose gold or titanium case, and is released in a limited edition of 8 pieces of each.

The finishes are "Haute Horlogerie" grade, and the eclectic clientèle will find in this timepiece all the design codes showcased since the brand was launched and mentioned above.

Rudis Sylva – RS 16 Harmonious Oscillator

Rudis SylvaRS 16 Harmonious Oscillator 2016

Rudis Sylva RS 16 Harmonious Oscillator
pre-selected in the Tourbillon category GPHG 2016

When the Harmonious Oscillator was unveiled at Baselworld 2009, there were watchmakers present who thought this invention to be important in the history of timekeeping.

The reason is clear: the Harmonious Oscillator represents a horological revolution. In permanent opposition, its toothed balance wheels instantly minimize the effects of gravity when the watch is in the vertical position. The wheels are interlinked, ensuring a more stable amplitude for higher precision.

The Harmonious Oscillator is an embodiment of technical and artistic brilliance with mesmerizing micro engineering complemented by the finest hand-engraving, enameling, guilloche, and scintillating anglage.

The main plate features a handcrafted guilloche pattern of tapering pyramids, while the bridges of the dual balance regulator feature hand-crafted anglage with no fewer than 40 incredibly demanding internal angles; 28 of which are executed in ultra-strong and difficult-to-work titanium. Both the movement and the case back are engraved by hand, with the case back also featuring sublime high-fire enamel.

The distinctive design of the new RS 16 with its high-domed sapphire crystal is by star watch designer Eric Giroud.

Rudis Sylva is proud to be one of very few independent brands to have designed, manufactured, tested, and patented an entire complicated movement. Rudis Sylva is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and is proud to be one of very few independent brands to have designed, built, manufactured, tested and patented an entire complicated movement.
