The topology of science fiction

The level of detail in science fiction art and visuals never ceases to amaze us – imagining structures that don’t exist, for applications that are equally fictional and invented requires some serious creative thinking. It would be impossible not to take inspiration from these things at a deep subconscious level. The teleporting, deflecting, planet-destroying kind.

Outside a Hollywood or animation studio however, materials and construction for this kind of thing are equally imaginary and probably impossible with today’s technology. A fact that was reinforced when Ming Thein (MT) created a dial that looks like an object the entire plot of a science fiction film might revolve around, both figuratively and literally.

A dial this unique requires an appropriately special watch, and naturally we looked to our 20.01 series of chronographs which has served as the launch platform for our most significant dial innovations to date.

Today’s release, the MING 20.01 Series 5, continues this tradition with what is probably the industry’s first dial that is laser milled from a single block of metal to create complex radial strakes that have interlocking surface contours in both vertical and horizontal planes.

This micromachined dial is then vapor coated an intense blue and subjected to another round of lasering to selectively remove coating from the top of the strakes, leaving bare titanium with a stonewashed texture. And if machining such fine contours and applying multiple colours and finishes was not difficult enough, MT decided to do all of this from a single block of titanium.

Completing the 20.01 Series 5 is the AgenGraphe by Agenhor - one of the most significant and sophisticated chronograph movements available today. It contains many advanced and unique features such as a central chronograph core; Agenhor’s proprietary backlash-free gears; proprietary horizontal clutch mechanism; instantaneous jumping minutes; snail reset cams; and proprietary regulation mechanism. It is presented here in a unique configuration to MING: manual wind, with 5N rose gold coated bridges, and polished anglage. A hard winding stop also gives tangible feedback once the mainspring is fully charged.

All of this is housed in a hybrid 20-series case - the bezel, ‘flying blade’ lugs, caseback, and crown are in stainless steel; pushers are titanium and coloured to match the dial, and the caseband is in DLC titanium for contrast. Sized at 41.5x14.2mm to accommodate the AgenGraphe, it also provides the necessary space required to truly appreciate the dial. A variety of finishes and short lugs also ensure the watch wears and looks comfortable on a variety of wrist sizes.

The top sapphire crystal carries the indices and chronograph scales, which are laser etched and filled with our proprietary MING Polar White luminous material (which is one of, if not the only, material that glows pure white), while the hands have blue emission Super-LumiNova X1 for ideal contrast.

The 20.01 Series 5 is completed with a dark blue alcantara strap and a black FKM rubber strap fitted with our flying blade tuck buckle.

MING Watches - LW.01 Edition

MING Watches20.11 Mosaic Titanium - Special Edition

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Out of our Special Projects Cave and it’s been several years in the making, but we haven’t abandoned the challenge of making what we believe are the world’s lightest mechanical wristwatches: the MING LW.01 Manual and LW.01 Automatic. They are a featherweight 8.8 and 10.8 grams respectively and for the watch head only.

The challenge

For our fourth anniversary, we wanted to push the envelope further than we – or any other brand – has ever done. Coincidentally, some movements became available that would enable us to make something interesting: what started with thinner eventually became lighter, and then lightest. Why? Because we wanted the challenge.

We set ourselves some ‘conventional’ constraints, though: the watch had to be a wearable size, and retain certain tactile qualities such as the texture and thermal transfer of metal. More importantly, it would have to be practically wearable and not technically compromised purely for the sake of lightness.

As it turns out, it would take us a couple of years longer than expected and an exhaustive amount of metallurgy and testing.

Exotic solutions to chase numbers

MT began by rethinking the entire case construction to minimize the amount of metal used, whilst retaining (and maximizing) rigidity. In a normal watch, the dial is fixed to the movement, which is in turn fixed to the caseband, with upper and lower bezels forming the front crystal and caseback respectively.

The MING LW.01 has a combined “dial” ring and movement holder shaped like a hat, just 0.5mm thick in places but ribbed for strength. To prevent injury to the dial or disruption of the movement, this assembly is supported from the rear by a cage with 3D struts. It also caps and seals the entire assembly to the bezel, which despite being very narrow, is internally hollowed to save further weight.

There is no actual dial perse: the outer ring/background is the movement holder, and the central movement portion is occluded by a gradient print on the outer crystal – which also contains the index markings.

We explored a wide range of ultralight materials including carbon fiber derivatives and hollow-core 3D printing, but ultimately found that AZ31 Magnesium-Aluminium-Zinc-Manganese alloy from Smiths High Performance was both lighter than carbon (1.77g/cc, vs ~2g/cc density), more consistent to produce than hollow 3D printing, and more importantly retained the feel of metal. It is further surface treated by plasmaelectrolytic oxidation by Keronite for corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, with a further composite protective layer. Material choices do not stop there: even the crystal is not sapphire, but instead Corning Gorilla Glass 6 via Knight Optical with an additional hardening treatment. At 2.40g/cc, it is significantly lighter than the 3.98g/cc of traditional sapphire whilst retaining 670 Vickers hardness and high impact resistance.

Every single component on the watch – down to the screws (in PEEK composite), hollowing of the bezel, and anglage of case buttressing – was optimised to hit the absolute balance of durability and weight. The crown is in anodised aluminium for durability of threading reasons. Finite element simulation was used to check overall torsional rigidity of the watch case. Fixed integral bars machined from the same billet as the case both contribute to rigidity and are lighter than steel springbars.

The final result is a complete head weight of just 8.8 grams with manual winding, 10.8 grams with automatic winding, and an additional 0.6 grams for the matching AZ31 buckle, and 1.2 grams for the ‘record’ spec Alcantara strap. This puts a ready-to-wear watch at 10.6g or 12.6g.

Referencing details

The LW.01 has a several distinctive features that pay tribute to our earlier creations: the pulse seconds disc with an interference pattern as an evolution of MT’s own Ochs und Junior Simpleton of 2016; a shuriken hour hand from the 17.03, and the gradient and skeleton peripheral ring on the crystal from the 19 series. Indices are a visually ‘lighter’ skeletonized version of the 37 series. It also of course carries the same flared lugs and ergonomic crown of our other watches.

It takes an entire village

To machine AZ31 magnesium – let alone to the wall thicknesses and tolerances required – requires some special expertise. Reto Helfenstein of Helfenstein Mechanik was brought in on the recommendation of some mutual friends; his expertise with similar materials for the aerospace industry has proven invaluable. The raw AZ31 billet comes from Smiths High Performance in the UK, and Keronite handles the plasmaelectrolytic oxidation. Manufacture Jean-Rousseau created the single layer Alcantara straps that weigh just 1.2 grams, yet are soft and comfortable to wear without being floppy.

Included with the watch are also a selection of other straps for a different feel. We also include a second buckle – in aluminium and in our tuck buckle design – by DBMF. Manufacture Schwarz-Etienne figured out which components within the ETA2000 could be removed or lightened to further save weight, and which had to remain untouched for reliability. Final assembly and testing are conducted at Schwarz-Etienne.

MING Watches – 20.11 Mosaic Titanium Edition

MING Watches20.11 Mosaic Titanium - Special Edition

The MING Mosaic becomes production reality in our latest flagship: the 20.11.
All you can eat plus a whole chicken

We took everything we have in the design arsenal and threw it into our new flagship and daily wearer: it is the kind of watch you can and want to wear almost all of the time, but also projects something a little bit special.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It debuts design tweaks reflecting our Special Projects Cave logo at 12, sapphire hands and Barenia leather straps.

The Mosaic: a 3D chessboard

Of course, the star of the show is the Mosaic dial itself: 2,650 squares of varying opacity, each formed with a linear diffraction pattern and etched with a high-power femtosecond laser on three different levels within the sapphire crystal dial. This process was developed in collaboration with DM Surfaces SA of St. Imier and has been in the works for the better part of two years.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Actual production is tricky as the process is very sensitive to crystal quality and not all sapphire is equal. Tiny, near invisible inclusions within the crystal structure can cause the entire dial to shatter as a large amount of energy is being focused on a very small area during lasering. Though we use a 1.30mm thick optical grade crystal as the base blank; yield remains low and limits this dial to flagship applications only.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Depending on ambient light, the Mosaic can turn from invisible to a prominent chessboard and we chose to use a dark movement finish to provide a contrasting background, whilst adding visual texture. At night, light from the fully charged HyCeram in the sapphire dial will reflect off the Mosaic and result in a soft glow.

Micro-rotor, rebooted

The 20.11 is powered by the Schwarz-Etienne for MING Cal. ASE 200.2, with micro-rotor winding.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The finishing is now matte-blasted with a black DLC coating and contrasting diamond-cut anglage.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It has a power reserve of approximately 86 hours and is wound bidirectionally by a micro-rotor made of sintered tungsten.

Attention to the little details

For the first time on any MING, we use sapphire crystal hands with HyCeram for legibility in all light conditions. The same HyCeram is used on the luminous indices of the dial sapphire. To add even more visual texture to the rear, the inner bezel surrounding the movement is made of titanium and machined with a Clous-de-Paris pattern and DLC coated.

The 20.11 is completed with a pair of handmade straps from Jean Rousseau Paris, a leather travel pouch by Studio Koji Sato, and a 700-lumen Nitecore LED torch for charging the HyCeram.
