In addition to their distinctive blue colour, another characteristic feature of the Laureus special editions is the engraving on the case back. Each year, IWC organizes a drawing competition for children and adolescents in the context of the foundation’s projects. A BLUE-AND-BLACK
SPECIAL EDITION PILOT’S WATCH MARK XVIII
TAKES OFF FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Schaffhausen, 26 February 2018 – IWC Schaffhausen presented the Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” at the occasion of the 2018 Laureus World Sport Awards in Monaco. The timepiece with a case made of black ceramic, a blue dial and a special engraving on the case back is the 12th special edition launched by IWC as part of its commitment to support Laureus Sport for Good.

The Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” (Ref. IW324703) has a 41-millimetre case made of black ceramic and is available in a limited edition of 1,500 individually numbered watches. It features the typical blue dial that has become the signature trademark of IWC’s special editions for Laureus. Thanks to the luminescent coating, the black hands can easily be read in the dark. The robust 35111-calibre movement is protected against magnetic fields by a soft-iron inner case, and the glass is secured against sudden drops in air pressure. The embossed black calfskin strap is extremely comfortable to wear.

A SPECIAL ENGRAVING ON THE BACK

Like every Laureus special edition, the timepiece features an engraving of the winning entry of the drawing competition that IWC organizes each year within the organization’s supported programmes. The theme for 2017 was “Time to Be Healthy”.

The jury selected 11-year-old Ana Claudia’s drawing out of more than 1,000 submissions. Ana participates in a project of Instituto Reação in Brazil. This organization helps to improve the living conditions of Brazilian children and adolescents through education and sport – and particularly relies on judo to convey values such as respect, discipline and determination. A part of the proceeds from sales will be used to support Laureus Sport for Good.

IWC – DA VINCI Chronograph Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”

IWC SchaffhausenDA VINCI Chronograph Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”

THE DREAM OF A YOUNG BOY
DA VINCI CHRONOGRAPH EDITION “LAUREUS SPORT FOR GOOD FOUNDATION”

The Da Vinci Chronograph Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” is one of the highlights of the current Da Vinci collection. Every year, IWC Schaffhausen presents a limited special edition, part of the proceeds from which is used to help disadvantaged children and young people. On the back of the watch is a drawing by a Chinese boy, with which he won the global children’s drawing competition.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Da Vinci Chronograph Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” (Ref. IW393402) has a blue dial and a diameter of 42 millimetres. Newly developed moving horns with curved lugs ensure that the black alligator leather strap by Santoni fits wrists perfectly. The stainless-steel chronograph shows elapsed minutes and hours on a subdial, so that the stopped times can be read off as if on an analogue watch. As usual, the timepiece has a central chronograph hand to show seconds.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The in-house 89361 chronograph calibre has a 68-hour power reserve and draws its energy via the automatic IWC double-pawl winding system, which has four pawls to transmit energy to the pawl wheel. The watch is water-resistant to 3 bar and has a flyback function: pressing the push-button stops, resets and restarts the chronograph instantaneously.

TIMEPIECES FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Every year since 2006, IWC Schaffhausen has launched an exclusive special edition for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these timepieces goes directly to the Laureus Foundation and contributes to the funding of its projects. Like its predecessors, the 11th in the series of IWC special editions is a symbol of hope for children and young people who are socially disadvantaged because they have mental or physical handicaps or live in difficult family cir cumstances.

“We want to give children and young people all over the world the best-possible start to self-determined lives,” explains Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. And here, sport can play an important role. In many cases, people with some form of mental impairment are particularly likely to be ostracized or neglected by society. In Laureus sports projects, they are respected and appreciated and learn how to surmount barriers. I’m proud that we can make some form of contribution.”

DRAWING OF LAUGHING BOY ENGRAVED ON CASE BACK

One of the hallmarks of all Laureus special editions is an engraving on the case back. Traditionally, IWC Schaffhausen organizes an annual children’s drawing competition within all the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation projects worldwide.

The motto this year was “Time Well Spent”, and the jury singled out a drawing by 12-year-old Hou Ye from Shanghai. Despite a mental handicap and limited motor abilities, Hou Ye is a passionate participant in the Special Olympics East Asia. His winning picture shows himself on skis, laughing happily as he sets his own personal best time.

IWC – BIG PILOT's Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” Gold Unique

IWC SchaffhausenBIG PILOT's Annual Calendar Edition Le Petit Prince” White Gold 46 mm Unique Piece NEW

#BLUEDIAL: A DESIGN TREND
FROM
SCHAFFHAUSEN IS TAKING
THE WATCH WORLD BY STORM

Schaffhausen, 12 December 2016 50 years ago, IWC Schaffhausen created watches with blue dials. In doing so, the watchmaker from north-east Switzerland set off a design trend that has now spread throughout the entire watch industry. Around 120 references and limited special editions with blue dials have been launched in the six watch families and in various shades since 1967. IWC presents the latest highlight in blue – the Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition Le Petit Prince with a blue dial and a blue-coloured movement, limited to 250 pieces.

Blue represents the expanse of the sky and the unfathom able depth of the sea. The colour of distance and infinity radiates harmony, contentment and peace. Watches with blue dials are currently all the rage in fashion and have also gone down a storm on the Internet for months under the hashtag #bluedial. As one of its pioneers, IWC Schaffhausen has had a significant influence on this design trend: the manufacturer launched its first models with blue dials in 1967 – the Ingenieur Automatic (Ref. 866 AD) and the Yacht Club Automatic (Ref. 811 A /AD). This kind of timepiece has had a permanent place in the collection ever since.

In the 1990s, the rule that blue dials could only be used with platinum cases still applied – such as the legendary 1994 Pilot’s Watch Mark XII (Ref. IW324107) or the 1999 Pilot’s Watch UTC (Ref. IW325103). Today, however, elegant blue dials can also be found in combin ation with gold, stainless-steel or even ceramic cases.

BLUE IS VERY MUCH AT HOME ON THE “LE PETIT PRINCE”
AND THE “LAUREUS” TIMEPIECES

Since 2008, IWC has also regularly launched Pilot’s Watches in honour of the famous story “Le Petit Prince” by French aviation pioneer and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. All “Le Petit Prince” watches boast blue dials. IWC is carrying on this tradition and now presents the latest highlight in blue: the Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW502703) is limited to 250 pieces. This timepiece a white gold case not only has a blue dial but, for the first time in the history of IWC, also a blue movement: the IWC-manufactured 52850 calibre is visible through the sapphire-glass case back and gets its distinctive colour from a coating with various metallic oxides.

In addition to the “Le Petit Prince” Pilot’s Watches, the colour blue is also a firm fixture in the special editions for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation: besides their engraved back, the dial in Laureus blue is the key feature of these timepieces, which IWC has released every year since 2006. In the tenth overall special edition for Lau-reus, the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Edition Laureus Sport for Good Foundation (Ref. IW459006), the colour blue also represents the hope of disadvan-taged children and young people for a better future.

BLUE SPECIAL EDITIONS
DELIGHT COLLECTORS

IWC has always skilfully showcased the colour of the ocean in various special editions. The watchmaker created one of its most spectacular shades of blue in 2004 for the Aquatimer Edition “Cousteau Divers” (Ref. IW354803/IW354806) diver’s watch. IWC reissued a style icon this year with deep blue dials – the Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante Edition Boutique Milano (Ref. IW371215) and the Edition “Boutique Munich” (Ref. IW371217).

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ..                   BIG FOTO

BLUE DIALS GO INTO THE
VACUUM CHAMBER

IWC often uses what is called physical vapour deposition (PVD) to manufacture blue dials. The PVD procedure allows extremely dense coatings to be created, which are only fractions of a micrometre thick. The dials are first galvanically nickel-plated and gold-plated. The actual PVD coating then follows, where they are steamed in a vacuum chamber with gaseous metal ions. The final colour depends on the specific process properties and the coating thickness, among other things. As an alter native to PVD coating, special paints are also used to achieve the blue colour on certain models.

THE TICKING STAR OF THE
LAUREUS CHARITY NIGHT

Schaffhausen, 11 November 2016 – The tenth Laureus Charity Night will see an exclusive, unique IWC Schaffhausen timepiece going under the hammer: the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Unique Piece “Laureus Charity Night Zürich 2016”. All the proceeds from the auction will go to the Laureus Foundation Switzerland, helping to ensure the continued existence of the social sports projects for disadvantaged Swiss children and adolescents.

The tenth Laureus Charity Night will be held on 19 November 2016 in Dübendorf, near Zurich. Around 600 VIP guests are expected to attend the anniversary of the fundraising event, where the tenth birthday of the Laureus Foundation Switzerland will also be celebrated. All guests will have the opportunity to bid on an exclusive, unique piece from IWC Schaffhausen. The timepiece up for auction is the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Unique Piece “Laureus Charity Night Zürich 2016 (Ref. IW397205) – the only watch with a 45-millimetre platinum case, a blue dial and a special engraving on the case back.

This imposing chronograph not only allows intermediate times to be measured with down-to-the-second accuracy, but also features a perpetual calendar that independently recognizes the different lengths of the months, as well as the leap day occurring every four years. The complex mechanism can be set easily using the crown and will not require any adjustments until 2100.

The date and month are displayed with large numerals in the style of a digital watch. Oscillating at a frequency of 4 hertz, the IWC-manufactured 89801 calibre guarantees high precision. And thanks to its double-pawl winding mechanism, the watch is driven solely by being worn on the wrist: a rotor in 18-carat red gold converts the wearer’s kinetic energy into tension in the spring and generates a power reserve of 68 hours. The watch is fitted with a black alligator leather strap by Santoni.

10,000 SWISS YOUNGSTERS
PARTICIPATE IN LAUREUS PROJECTS

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was founded in South Africa 16 years ago. In 2007, IWC Schaffhausen and Mercedes-Benz Switzerland joined forces to establish the Laureus Foundation Switzerland. Laureus focuses on the power of sport to integrate disadvantaged children and adolescents into society more effectively. 10,000 or so young Swiss girls and boys participate in the sports projects on offer, such as Laureus Girls in Sport and Laureus Street Soccer. The foundation raises most of the funding required for these projects with its annual Laureus Charity Night. Last year, donations amounting to CHF 1.1 million were collected.

The timepiece, limited to 1,500 watches, marks the tenth special edition to be launched by the Schaffhausen-based luxury watchmaker as part of its commitment to Laureus Sport for Good. The winning design from last year’s IWC children’s drawing competition is engraved on the case back. This special engraving is a reminder that a portion of the proceeds from sales goes to Laureus to help support its social projects.

Sport eliminates differences, imparts self-confidence and promotes team spirit: this is the motto of Laureus Sport for Good, an organization that believes in the integrative force of sport, harnessing its potential to advance social change and provide more promising future prospects for disadvantaged children and adolescents.

Since 2006, IWC Schaffhausen has been supporting the foundation on an annual basis by launching a special watch in aid of the cause. “Our cooperation with Laureus forms one of the cornerstones of our commitment to social responsibility. The foundation, and its ambassadors from the world of professional sport, are tirelessly and passionately dedicated to improving society. I am proud that we have been able to support this important and necessary work for the tenth year running with a special edition, summarizes Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

This year, the timepiece of choice is a model from the Portofino family. The Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” (Ref. The hour indices are complemented by 12 diamonds, which combine with the blue alligator leather strap from Santoni to give the timepiece a very elegant overall look. With a case measuring 37 millimetres in diameter, this watch is also suitable for watch lovers with slender wrists. It is driven by the automatic 35800-calibre movement with a power reserve of 42 hours.

A CHILDREN’S DRAWING ADORNS THE CASE

In addition to their distinctive blue colour, another characteristic feature of the Laureus special editions is the engraving on the case back. Each year, IWC organizes a drawing competition for children and adolescents in the context of the foundation’s projects. An expert jury then reviews all the entries to select the winning design to be engraved on the back of the watch.

For the tenth special edition in this series, the jury chose the drawing by 16-year-old Eleni Partakki from Cyprus. Her drawing on the competition theme “Time for Sport” shows girls and boys playing with a ball. Eleni Partakki is a participant of Peace Players International Cyprus (PPI), a project that actively encourages Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot boys and girls living in the divided Cyprus to play basketball together.

A total of 1.1 million Swiss francs were raised for the cause at the ninth Laureus Charity Night in Dübendorf last November thanks to proceeds from the event – including those from the auctioning of a Portuguese Tourbillon Mystère Rétrograde Unique Piece “Laureus Charity Night”. The money raised will benefit various projects organized by the foundation in Switzerland – in particular, Laureus Girls in Sport and Laureus Street Soccer.
