HAUTLENCE – RETROVISION ‘47 Tourbillon Edition

HAUTLENCE RETROVISION 47 Concept Tourbillon 20th Anniversary Limited Edition 2024

As HAUTLENCE unveils its latest creations at Watches & Wonders, visitors to its booth at the world’s biggest watch show are in for a real surprise: the HAUTLENCE RETROVISION ‘47. In a major “what if?” moment for its 20th anniversary, HAUTLENCE imagines what it would have created had the brand existed in the 1940s.

Since its foundation in 2004, HAUTLENCE has always been inspired by the world around it, no matter how far away from the confines of traditional Swiss watchmaking. From landscapes and architecture to locomotives and contemporary art, HAUTLENCE’s creativity is not bound by preconceived notions and rigid codes. One recurring theme that has become a defining feature of its creations is a rather ubiquitous object found in every household: the television.

The distinct rectangular HAUTLENCE case with rounded edges is modeled after television sets of the past. As its content was always intended to be animated and intriguing, the television case is a perfect fit for the brand’s quirky, kinetic take on mechanical watchmaking. But what if HAUTLENCE was established in the 1940s rather than 2004

How would it reinterpret otherwise mundane objects into singular time-telling machines? What kind of watches would it create from the inspiration surrounding it? These are the types of questions that HAUTLENCE sought to answer in a thought-provoking exercise of creativity and independence, resulting in the RETROVISION ‘47.

The historical object that ultimately served as the source of inspiration for this exceptional piece isn’t a television set at all, but it’s close enough. Made by the General Television & Radio Corp. Chicago in the 1940s, the “Model 5A5” is a radio broadcast receiver, but its design demonstrates how it set the template for the overall form of televisions of that era, with its segmenting of the screen and speaker as well as its dials and knobs.

Easy enough to carry around the house but visually outstanding as a sort of sculptural piece, the General Television & Radio Corp. Chicago Model 5A5 represents the perfect harmony between form and function, with its own, distinct look.

Handcrafted in a hand-painted case with a cuboidal form featuring soft, rounded corners, the HAUTLENCE RETROVISION ‘47 mimics the look of the marbled green and white Bakelite of the historical broadcast receiver’s case.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Almost a miniaturized version of the radio converted into a wristwatch, it features white attachments that serve as lugs in the form of carrying handles, with the crown at 6 o’clock to maintain the case’s symmetry. The red leather strap adds a vintage touch to this otherworldly creation that could’ve come from an alternate timeline in HAUTLENCE’s history.

One could even say that the RETROVISION ‘47 is the most traditional HAUTLENCE ever made, as it features a proper hour and minute dial with central hands. On a small offset dial on the right side with a flat rectangular sapphire crystal, the red hands take on the three-dimensional form of the frequency selector dial, with the dial itself done in brass and 2N gold with an embossed pattern made of the HAUTLENCE Möbius emblem. On the left side of the case, is the “speaker” grill, under which the wearer can make out a 60-second flying tourbillon whirling away.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The case back is modeled after the back of the Model 5A5 radio receiver, with a specifically shaped plate engraved with the brand name and serial number. The round sapphire display back features some general information in the same vein as the radio and offers a view of the ED20-SP00 automatic caliber, which provides a power reserve of 72 hours.

Whimsical, evocative, and proudly unusual, the RETROVISION ‘47 marks the 20th anniversary of HAUTLENCE with a reimagining of what could have been and what could still be, with all the horological ingenuity that the brand stands for and its unique vision of kinetic, wearable art.

HAUTLENCE – HLXX Titanium 20th Anniversary Edition

HAUTLENCE HLXX Jumping Hours and Retrograde Minutes Titanium 20th Anniversary Limited Edition 2024

To know where you’re going, you must know where you come from. For independent avant-garde watchmaker HAUTLENCE, that mindset has never faltered. For 20 years, HAUTLENCE has paved the way for a new philosophy in watchmaking, one where design and mechanical kinetics take precedence over pure function. The passage of time itself is the performance, while the rest serves to enhance its dramatic effect – HAUTLENCE HLXX.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A TV-shaped case, a jumping hours disk, and a retrograde minutes hand—these were the stars of HAUTLENCE’s first horological venture, dubbed simply the HL. 20 years later, the result of this unexpected and unprecedented combination has proven to be just as outlandish, singular, and captivating as ever. Using the original HL movement that made its debut in 2004, HAUTLENCE has redesigned the TV-shaped case as well as the dial for a special 20-piece anniversary edition. The HLXX bridges the past, present, and future of HAUTLENCE.

An evocative form

Few case shapes from the 21st century are as outstanding and immediately identifiable as HAUTLENCE’s TV-shaped case. Rectangular with rounded sides and sharply faceted corners, the TV case is instantly recognizable for its unique form. For the 20th anniversary edition of the original HL, HAUTLENCE has revisited the overall silhouette and proportions to be much closer to that of the original with a few modern upgrades. Crafted in light yet tough grade 5 titanium, the HLXX’s case measures 37.0 x 45.0 x 11.75 mm (10.5 mm without sapphire crystal), with a water resistance of 10 ATM (100 meters).

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To give it a more streamlined look and feel, the case has no visible lugs. Instead, it features a quick-release system for the strap integrated directly onto the case back. The titanium deployant buckle comes with a quick-adjustment mechanism to quickly swap the black rubber cordura-effect strap without any tools.

Time-telling as a canvas

With a case shaped like a television, it’s only natural that whatever it’s showing inside is wholly engaging and mesmerizing. The HLXX takes a deconstructed approach to tell the time, where the hours and minutes occupy their own portions of the open dial with a silvery rhodium color and vertical satin-brushed surface, marking their passage in completely different ways.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The jumping hour of the HLXX is characterized by superimposed disks on the left side, where a fixed tinted sapphire crystal disk features an aperture that displays the current hour on a jumping hour disk, with Arabic hour numerals in Super-LumiNova®. The top disk with concentric lines recalls a key design element of the most recent Vagabonde series.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Inspired by locomotives, the lever system visible from the dial side connects a snail-cam with the blued retrograde minutes hand and jumping-hour switching mechanism, allowing them to advance simultaneously at the end of each hour. Taking a cue from HAUTLENCE’s more recent creations, the curved retrograde minutes track in tinted sapphire features applied numerals crafted in Globolight®, a ceramic material infused with Super-LumiNova® that HAUTLENCE has extensively featured in its more recent creations, including the Linear and Sphere. Finally, the HLXX takes a page from the HL2 with a rotating Möbius logo as a way to show that the watch is running and that time is naturally fleeting.

HL Calibre: last of its kind

Driving this highly animated spectacle of time is the HAUTLENCE A20 caliber, a form-fitting TV-shaped manual winding movement with which HAUTLENCE began its adventures 20 years ago. The balance wheel can be seen through the jumping hour disk as well as the case back. Its single barrel provides a minimum power reserve of 40 hours.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And just because it’s unusual doesn’t make the HL any less of an “Haute Horlogerie” creation. The bridges are decorated with wide côtes-de-Genève stripes as well as beveled and polished edges. The way the bridges are shaped and separated recalls the brand’s Möbius logo. And as a finishing touch to this anniversary edition, a screwed plaque adjacent to the ratchet wheel marks its distinction as the anniversary limited edition.

The HLXX celebrates this monumental milestone for HAUTLENCE, a brand that has been at the vanguard of imaginative and creative watchmaking since 2004. The HLXX is a limited edition of 20 pieces and marks the final time that the original HL caliber will be used.

HAUTLENCE – Forging the path for avant-garde independent watchmaking since 2004.

HAUTLENCE – VAGABONDE Tourbillon Series 3 Edition

HAUTLENCE VAGABONDE Tourbillon Series 3 Limited Edition 2023

MAKING WAVES - HAUTLENCE GOES SUPERCONDUCTOR IN THE VAGABONDE TOURBILLON SERIES 3

Cutting-edge materials in the service of HAUTLENCE’s uniquely avant-garde vision of watchmaking. The Vagabonde Tourbillon Series 3 elevates the brand’s unique interpretation of the wandering hours display with a flying tourbillon and a dial crafted in a sculpted superconductor material from the forge of James “Black Badger“ Thompson.

Innovation for the sake of art. Evocative watchmaking that challenges preconceived notions. Since its establishment in 2004, HAUTLENCE has remained at the helm of independent, out-of-the-box watchmaking. It incessantly challenges the tradition of watchmaking to create novel ways of displaying the passage of time while also showcasing its unique aesthetic sensibilities.

With its latest creation, the Vagabonde Tourbillon Series 3, HAUTLENCE is revisiting its tourbillon-equipped hands-free time display with a space-age material and striking contrasts throughout. The honeycomb pattern holds a special place for HAUTLENCE, featuring prominently in some of its earliest creations from as far back as 2004. For the Vagabonde Tourbillon Series 3, it’s more than just a geometric motif; it’s the structure of the base dial’s material.

Like something straight out of science fiction, superconductor materials hold many unique physical properties, with applications in a variety of fields including medical, aerospace, and quantum technologies – and we’re only just scratching the surface of its potential. The copper-niobium superconductor used in the Vagabonde Tourbillon Series 3 is intended for particle accelerators, so literally at the edge of physics. For HAUTLENCE, it’s mostly a source of creative expression.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To forge this sculptural dial, HAUTLENCE called upon the talents of its friend and collaborator James “Black Badger” Thompson, who has a real knack for experimenting with exotic and groundbreaking materials. Consisting of copper with hexagonal niobium filaments, the superconductor is cut across the grain at a specific angle. The material is then soaked in an acid bath, which attacks the copper but leaves the niobium intact, revealing a stunning, contrasting, tight honeycomb network. The result is a unique and almost organic lattice of raw metal.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To further enhance the unique and highly three-dimensional structure of the cutting-edge superconductor dial base, a ripple-like pattern is created by carefully removing material to create pronounced grooves. With the silvery-gray tone of the superconductor and its subtle shimmer, the dial always appears in motion, like ripples on the surface of water. This sets the stage for HAUTLENCE’s hands-free display of the time.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

All harmoniously arranged, the time display consists of three jumping hour satellites and a central minute disk. In essence, HAUTLENCE has reinvented the traditional wandering hours display by having three stationary jumping hours disks and a minute track moving between them, crafted in transparent sapphire crystal with minute numerals in Globolight®, a ceramic compound loaded with Super-LumiNova®.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This hypnotic portrayal of the passage of time above the three-dimensional and structured dial is framed within HAUTLENCE’s emblematic TV-shaped case, streamlined with an integrated rubber strap and more rugged with its bumpers for added robustness and perfectly wearable proportions.

Water-resistant to 10 ATM, the steel case in the Vagabonde Tourbillon Series 3 is exceptionally draped in a deep midnight blue PVD coating. To bring out the myriad of contrasting tones and voluminous textures, the integrated strap as well as the notched crown’s grip are fashioned in bright white rubber.

Animating the hour and minute discs as well as the tourbillon is the D30 automatic movement. Visible through the sapphire display back, it features a bidirectional pawl winding mechanism to efficiently deliver a power reserve of at least 3 days. This manufacture calibre is equipped with a one-minute flying tourbillon fitted with a double hairspring in an open bar-shaped carriage, all expertly produced in-house by HAUTLENCE’s sister company, Precision Engineering AG.

HAUTLENCE – LINEAR Series 2 Tourbillon Edition

HAUTLENCE LINEAR Series 2 Tourbillon Edition 2023

Black is the new black

The second series of the Linear takes on darker tones to further highlight the kinetic elements – the 60-second tourbillon bridge, the hours hand and the long arm which crosses the entire length of the watch to push the hours along – in striking blue.

Launched at the Watches & Wonders 2023 Geneva trade fair, the Linear Series 2 comes with a redesigned case with a black PVD coating that offers a stunning contrast with the coloured elements of the movement, as well as a new calibre and a unique time reading display.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Following on from the jumping hour disc, the half-trailing hour chain and the jumping hour that spins on a sphere, the avant-garde brand now presents a linear retrograde jumping hour.

On the left of the Linear Series 2’s dial, a graduated scale resembling those used on precision measuring instruments indicates the hours using a linkage. This large, very slim linkage recalls the one used in the first movement developed by HAUTLENCE in 2004: the calibre HL.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The small white pointer on its end indicates the hour on the vertical scale. Once the 12 numeral is passed, the snail disengages the probe to release the accumulated energy. The linkage then jumps and returns to the 1 numeral.

In addition to the linear retrograde jumping hour, the Linear Series 2 is equipped with a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock, whose balletic movement can be admired behind its blue skeletonised bridge.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The deep black graduated scale echoes the intense black of the steel case on the Linear Series 2, which is entirely covered with PVD to contrast with the linkage, the tourbillon bridge and the minute hand in blue.

The redesigned, ultra-durable case offers water resistance to 10 ATM. Relief forms on the sides add volume and dynamism to HAUTLENCE’s signature TV screen shape, but with a modernised aesthetic. The notched bezel, which is also covered with PVD, features a black rubber band that echoes the strap.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As always at HAUTLENCE, the dial is constructed on several levels. An additional sapphire dial featuring the minute numerals sits on top of the base dial with a vertical satin finish. The main dial is partially open to allow parts of the movement to be seen.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

One component visible through the opening is the minute cam. This is integral with the minute hand, which rotates once per hour and lifts the minute sector as the hour elapses. After 60 minutes, the minute sector falls back, driving the hour star which includes the hour cam.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Inside each HAUTLENCE Linear Series 2 watch beats the calibre D50. This self-winding movement has been entirely developed, designed and produced in-house, bringing the number of HAUTLENCE manufacture movements to eight.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Equipped with a module created in collaboration with Agenhor, it comprises 239 components, oscillates at a frequency of 3 hertz and offers a power reserve of 72 hours. The finely chased oscillating weight recalls the brand’s famous Moebius movement.
