DEMONSTRATE THE EXTENT OF THE MANUFACTURE’S MANUAL ASSEMBLY WITH TWO SLIMLINE MOONPHASE DATE MANUFACTURE LIMITED EDITIONS IMBUED WITH A TOUCH OF HUMOR AND FOLLY

Frederique Constant prides itself in being a true Swiss watch manufacture that creates its own movements and assembles its watches by hand. Yet this fact isn’t always prominently highlighted. The brand asked French artist seconde/seconde/ to find a way to convey the message in his own distinctive, cheeky style.

He might have gone too far. The result is two altered limited editions of the Slimline Moonphase Date Manufacture – one in steel that’s limited to 100 examples, and the second in steel with a rose gold tone crown and dial elements limited to 10 pieces.

Somewhere between a commentator, comedian, horological hacker and even a guerrilla artist, Romaric André is better known to the world under his alias seconde/seconde/. In a short few years, seconde/seconde/ has become a mainstay in many watch collectors’ radars.

From editing vintage watches with playful elements to collaborating with brands of all sizes and price segments, seconde/seconde/ found in the watch industry a perfect and somewhat untapped playground for combining his two passions: satire and horology.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On his first collaboration with Frederique Constant, Romaric André shared, "As watch lovers, we’re looking for perfection… but when it becomes too perfect, we start to regret the lack of soul, the lack of connection with the ‘artisanal roots’ of watchmaking. It’s the same in life where the quest for perfection sometimes is conflicting with our human nature and beauty. I love to talk about our contradictions as social bodies, and I think this watch embodies a bit of this sweet bipolarity we all have.”

Frederique Constant CEO Niels Eggerding added, "Romaric's dynamic and innovative spirit serves as a true inspiration, injecting a fresh and disruptive energy into our collaboration. Renowned for steering powerful and creative initiatives within the industry, he has rightfully earned his reputation. We feel privileged to join forces with him on the creation of one of the most successful Manufacture calibers ever produced by our brand. Our shared commitment to disruption aligns seamlessly, and we appreciate the bold provocations that Romaric has infused into the distinctive design of the Slimline Moonphase Date Manufacture. Together, we embark on a journey that celebrates innovation, pushing boundaries, and setting new standards in craftsmanship."

For his first collaboration with Frederique Constant, seconde/seconde/ sought to shine a light on what he considers the brand’s greatest strength (and perhaps frustration): the hand-assembled aspect of its watches. The result is a quirky and slightly chaotic reimagining of one of Frederique Constant’s most emblematic references from its “Manufacture” collection, the Slimline Moonphase Date

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The duo decided to create two limited editions: one of only 10 pieces featuring rose gold accents on the case and dial – a first for the model – available exclusively on Frederique Constant’s online boutique, and a second edition of 100 pieces in steel available from authorized Frederique Constant retailers around the world.

Upon a first glance from a distance, the Slimline Moonphase Date Manufacture appears… totally normal. The finely polished three-part 42mm stainless steel case, the subtly sparkling matt silver dial and harmonious moonphase and date display are all there. Yet a closer look reveals that nothing is as it seems. On the online-exclusive edition, the crown, hands and applied hour markers reflect a rose gold hue, contrasting against the coolness of the steel and silver elements. But that’s just the beginning.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Something is clearly not right with the dial. The applied hour markers appear to be weirdly and unevenly dispatched. The script of the logo and the date indication look like they were hand-written. Even the moonphase disk’s moon and stars look uneven and drawn by hand.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For seconde/seconde/ though, it makes perfect sense: to highlight the handcrafted aspect of Frederique Constant’s Slimline Moonphase Date Manufacture by incorporating a bit of human error and uneven typography that could only have been drawn by hand, while the elements themselves are perfectly executed and embellished by hand.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the reverse side of the case, the open display case comes with something of a disclaimer that perfectly sums up this unexpected and unprecedented collaboration: “How do we tell the world that manual-assembly is at the core of our Manufacture? We asked artist seconde/seconde/. He took it too far”.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beneath this message, one can admire a view of the FC-705 in-house automatic calibre, complete with perlage graining on the base plate, côtes de Genève striping on the bridge and blued screws throughout. Its bi-directional oscillating rotor efficiently winds the mainspring barrel to deliver a power reserve of 38 hours.

Frederique Constant – MANUFACTURE Slimline Perpetual Calendar Designed by Peter Speake Edition

Frederique ConstantMANUFACTURE Slimline Perpetual Calendar Manufacture Designed by Peter Speake Limited Edition 2024

Frederique Constant presents its Slimline Perpetual Calendar Manufacture Designed by Peter Speake

In a continuation of their close relationship, British watchmaker Peter Speake and Geneva-based manufacture Frederique Constant proudly unveil an exceptional timepiece for 2024. Housed in a 42-millimetre steel case, this Perpetual Calendar joins the Manufacture collection, where it offers a subtle balance between style and technical prowess. Thanks to judicious use of openwork, the design yields centre stage to the inner workings of the Manufacture Perpetual Calendar – precise and precious. This contemporary creation is limited to just 135 pieces.

Renowned for its highly refined styling, slim dimensions, and unashamed classicism, Frederique Constant’s iconic Manufacture collection now welcomes a bold new addition. Indeed, the Geneva-based brand has joined forces with British watchmaker Peter Speake to produce a highly distinctive timepiece limited to 135 pieces and featuring a decidedly strong stylistic approach that’s anything but commonplace. The piece’s imposing personality will appeal to collectors seeking a perpetual calendar complication with a difference.

Laying bare the perpetual calendar

If there’s one word that sums up the Slimline Perpetual Calendar Manufacture Designed by Peter Speake, it’s ‘openwork’. The British watchmaker has brought an ethereal, contemporary touch to Frederique Constant. Solid surfaces have been cut away to reveal the innermost workings of the Manufacture movement. All of the displays have been skeletonised, as have the hands (to which a luminous coating has been applied), revealing the mechanical ballet of the FC-775 calibre in all its glory; the seconds hand has been done away with altogether to preserve the assertively functional ethos.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The piece adopts the same minimalist approach when it comes to colours: just two have been used, white and matt anthracite grey – a combination offering perfect contrast – plus a dash of red at the end of three of the five hands to add a final touch of clarity to the related reading. A restrained, contemporary approach chosen by Peter Speake, an independent watchmaker of discreet, personal designs that have proved their worth over the past 25 years of his career.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The movement, meanwhile, bears all the hallmarks of the Frederique Constant Manufacture. Each component boasts its own lined finish; the gears of the perpetual calendar feature a circular satin finish and blued screws in the best traditions of fine Geneva watchmaking. The  transparent caseback reveals the openwork oscillating weight characteristic of the Maison’s Manufacture movements – charging up to a 38-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In a rare move for Frederique Constant, the rotor has also been coloured blue, echoing the blued screws. The words ‘Limited Edition 135 pieces’ are engraved on each timepiece; each comes on a grey nylon strap with matching overstitching.

A paragon of readability

Like the tourbillon, the perpetual calendar is one of the crowning complications of Fine Watchmaking, allowing wearers to read off all calendar information in a single glance and catering for the historic vagaries of the Gregorian system. Indeed, no manual correction is required for February when, once every four years, it has 29 and not 28 days as usual due to it being a leap year.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The design of a perpetual calendar dial is critical given how many indications need to be displayed. It must be both readable and functional, and Frederique Constant’s Manufacture Perpetual Calendar achieves just that. The day and date – the two most important items of information required on a daily basis – are displayed along the horizontal axis of the dial in that order, so as to be read off in a simple and intuitive manner, from left to right. Additional information is displayed along the vertical axis: the month at 12 o’clock and the moonphase at 6 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

That only leaves an event that affects the wearer just once in every four years on February 29th: the presence of a leap year. Since this detail is not needed for everyday use, it has been moved over to the month display at 12 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Here, it can be housed intuitively together with February, the month affected by leap years. A discreet red dot appears for the month in question when the year has 366 days; at all other times, the window remains white.

Frederique Constant X HIGHLIFE Automatic The AVENERA Edition

Frederique ConstantHIGHLIFE Automatic The AVENERA 39mm Exclusive Edition 2023

 Frederique Constant X The Avener:
A double limited edition

Since the announcement of their partnership in June 2022, Frederique Constant and French musician and producer The Avener have been working on future hits together, and two have been released today: a pair of limited-edition pieces housed in a 39-millimetre steel case designed by the artist, with 432 of each available.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

That number is no accident: 432Hz is widely held to be the perfect frequency, delivering all the calm of absolute harmony. The first piece features a black dial with a pattern depicting the frequencies monitored on a recording studio console in a dark blue reminiscent of the late-night sets played by

The Avener. The second is all in black, with the same sound waves depicted by a subtle interplay of reliefs and finishings in a circular layout. Each watch bears an inscription dear to the artist: ‘a tempo’, meaning ‘return to the original speed’.

Frederique Constant and The Avener really are made for each other. On the one side stands the Highlife collection. Since its return centre stage in 2020, it has won over a younger pop-urban generation that beats to the rhythm of precision Swiss watchmaking with perfect finishings available at affordable prices. This modern timepiece features an interchangeable integrated strap and a subtle, elegant style encapsulated in a 39-millimetre steel case.

On the other side is The Avener. With more than one million albums sold since his first release, the artist has established himself in record time on the Electro scene. Aged just 36, The Avener has already spent 20 years in the business, the inspiration for his eclectic output ranging from the depths of the blues to modern House music. He’s a landmark musician and producer – and the epitome of the Highlife generation.

Two exclusive limited editions

Now, 432 watches of both models have been released to celebrate this friendship between watchmaking and music. That number is no accident: 432Hz is widely held to be the perfect frequency, delivering all the calm of absolute harmony. Their beating heart is the automatic FC-303 calibre.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Visible through the caseback thanks to a glare proof sapphire crystal, the movement boasts a 38-hour power reserve. On the dial side, the rhythm of passing time is marked out by three hands and a date window, above which sits the a tempo inscription. In musical notation, this expression dear to The Avener indicates a return (after a faster or slower section) to the normal tempo, usually referred to by DJs playing their hits in terms of BPM (Beats Per Minute).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each dial is decorated with a motif echoing the sound waves of those hits as depicted on studio monitors. On the first piece, they run across the Highlife dial in blue on a black background. The shade of blue in question has particular significance for The Avener: it was used on the cover of his first album, a global success boosted by the single Fade Out Lines. It’s as if the timepiece has captured a fragment of his music, depicting a few bars of the score. The dial combines all the rhythm of the producer/musician – and all the precision of Swiss engineering.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The second timepiece is evocative of The Avener’s nighttime sets, with a black strap, black DLC* case, black dial, luminous black coating, and a date window with a black background. Only the hands and hour markers stand out to mark the time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sound wave pattern here is concentric, radiating out from the centre in a nod to the sunburst finish much beloved of the Geneva-based Manufacture, here symbolically repurposed by The Avener in the form of an electro finish from which only the frequency display emerges in glossy relief.

A gift box ready to travel

Each timepiece comes with two tool-free interchangeable straps, the first with a choice of steel or black rubber, the second with the option of rubber or nubuck, both in black.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The gift box is an original piece especially designed for these limited editions. It takes the form of a replica flight case resembling those used by musicians when touring. With an abundance of reinforcements, the flight case is an embodiment of concerts and the backstage atmosphere, and hints at valuable gear stored within.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It’s the perfect setting for an artist’s Highlife, in the centre of a black interior between the additional strap and the limited edition plate.

Frederique Constant – Classic Tourbillon Meteorite Manufacture Edition

 Classic Tourbillon Meteorite Manufacture:
Frederique Constant’s Most Exclusive Creation

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

2023 marks Frederique Constant’s 35th anniversary and the 15th anniversary of its iconic Tourbillon calibre. For the occasion, the Maison has unveiled a Classic Tourbillon Meteorite Manufacture in platinum, featuring a meteorite dial and limited to only 35 pieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This is an absolute first, as each individual timepiece is entirely finished by hand: an undertaking entrusted to two watchmakers from the Manufacture whose only mission was to achieve the highest degree of hand-finishing possible on the movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For collectors, this Classic Tourbillon Meteorite Manufacture, of which just 35 handcrafted and numbered pieces will be made, is the ultimate must-have. The cut-out in its dial at 6 o’clock reveals the Manufacture tourbillon created by Frederique Constant just 15 years ago, in 2008. It’s one of the few tourbillons available in a platinum case with a meteorite dial to be currently available on the market.

Movement: the pinnacle of hand-finishing

However, the most important aspects are less immediately visible. Only a closer and more knowledgeable eye will be able to detect something that has never been achieved before on a Frederique Constant watch: the entire hand-finishing of all the components of the movement. This exceptional and unprecedented achievement is the work of two watchmakers specialising in the Maison’s Manufacture and complication movements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Using traditional instruments and tools, working by hand, they spent weeks on the meticulous finishing of each of the components: a buff file for bevelling, a hammer and punch for hand-punching, and 9-micron sandpaper for charbonnage of the frame (bridge) and the base of the tourbillon cage, reproducing the aspect of the meteorite dial. A single bridge alone requires between two and three days of work.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beading and graining the flanks was done entirely by hand, and all the components have been decorated on both sides – even those that aren’t visible. And for what can be seen, Frederique Constant has worked on even the tiniest details, including block-polishing the screws.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This especially demanding technique involves diamond polishing on a zinc plate. Once polished, the screws take on a dark or steel sheen depending on the light, creating endless and unique contrasts depending on the movement’s orientation.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Indeed, the latter has some forty such screws, and it takes some forty minutes to polish and bevel each of them by hand.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Once the timepiece is assembled and finished, each of its components is checked according to the highest quality criteria, in line with Haute Horlogerie standards.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This process puts Frederique Constant on a par with independent workshops: a significant step change in the quality of the Manufacture that paves the way for future developments.

35 truly unique pieces thanks to the dial

The meteorite dial is a precious testament to exceptional craftsmanship: a fragment of space that fell to Earth in a happy and rare occurrence in Gibeon, Namibia offers a perfect illustration of the relationship between humankind, the universe, and the astronomy of which watchmaking is a direct offshoot. At the same time, this piece of celestial history is also the subject of a veritable exploit in terms of craftsmanship: chiselling a meteorite dial, full of metals, requires exceptional skills.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

That’s because the precious material breaks and crumbles; its high iron content means it may have suffered serious deterioration, mainly corrosion.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

That in turn means extreme dexterity is called for in order to cut out a perfectly flat, smooth disc without a single flake falling off and damaging the movement beneath it. The meteorite dial – just 0.5mm thick – is also protected by a coat of ruthenium, enhancing its natural grey glints and shielding the surface from oxidation.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

All this hard work has been well worth it, nonetheless: since the material is natural, each meteorite dial is different from any other. In other words, this is not so much a limited edition of 35 pieces as a set of 35 unique pieces.

A harmonious creation

To ensure visual coherence with the colour of the meteorite dial, the movement also sports a ruthenium finish. This is very rare for Frederique Constant, and indeed in the watchmaking industry as a whole – all the more reason for adopting it here.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each engraving, including the timepiece’s individual number (on the tourbillon cage and also on the caseback) is rhodium-plated to ensure the characters stand out clearly. The oscillating weight is made of brass with a tungsten section around the rim.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This material has been selected for its density, which is greater than that of 18-carat gold, providing greater inertia when in motion and thus enabling the barrel spring to be wound more quickly. All the parts of the oscillating weight are also coated with ruthenium.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Classic Tourbillon Meteorite Manufacture comes in a 39mm platinum case. For the first time in its history, Frederique Constant has combined a meteorite dial with this precious metal.

The Manufacture tourbillon

Unveiled in 2008, the Manufacture FC-980 tourbillon movement – developed in-house and fitted with a silicon escapement wheel and anchor – can be seen from the rear of the piece. It boasts a 38-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Bringing a tourbillon to life requires a high degree of watchmaking skill. Originally designed to improve timekeeping performance, tourbillons are now valued for the mechanical ballet they perform – centre stage here – to the delight of spectators.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The architecture of the piece provides collectors with a breath-taking view of the escapement wheel linked to the anchor pallet, the balance wheel rocking back and forth, and the concentric beat of the hairspring. A hand located above the tourbillon cage indicates the passing seconds.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It’s also worth noting that Frederique Constant was one of the first watchmakers to adopt silicon in order to make the most of the many benefits it offers. Here, it has been used for the escapement wheel and anchor.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The combined weight of these purple-hued parts and the rest of the escapement, regulating organs and tourbillon cage is just 0.59g, so very little energy is required to get them moving.
