The BOVET Aperto 1 is a mechanical watchmaking masterpiece that redefines the traditional skeleton’s delicate, technical, and aesthetic role. It signals a bold new approach for the future of skeletonized high watchmaking. Transcending the ordinary, the timepiece continues to place the intricate dance of gears and mechanics on full display, while at the same time adding a new ingredient – supreme versatility.

A Masterpiece of Engineering and Design

The BOVET Aperto 1 is powered by a brand-new, hand-wound, open-worked manufacture movement that captures the essence of futurist high watchmaking with its impeccable design and precision engineering, reduced to its bare essentials.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Its open-worked movement has had everything extraneous removed; its bridges and plates all merging in the center of the movement. Thanks to sapphire crystals on both sides, the in-house movement architecture of this timepiece is on full display.

Aperto 1 features a 42mm grade 5 Titanium case that is sandblasted in such a way that fingerprints will not show after handling. The movement itself is coated with black and tantalum grey treatments, highlighting its cutting-edge architecture. The movement components are all crafted in-house by BOVET, open-worked and finished by hand to perfection.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each movement undergoes at least 10 hours of hand-finishing just for the plates and bridges alone. The techniques used include: PVD or CVD coating (depending on the color); bead blasting (challenging not to deform the components and to keep a uniform orientation of the grains); graining of the flanks; polishing of the bevels; polishing of stone gouges and screws; perlage, circular Côtes de Genève; polishing, and anglage. This extraordinary level of attention to detail, beloved by collectors, should be viewed through a loupe to be completely appreciated.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Ultimate finesse is required of BOVET’s dedicated artisans due to the movement parts being coated before assembly. Great care must be exercised not to damage the coatings in any way. One slip of a tool during assembly and the component must be discarded.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A significant and distinguishing feature of the Aperto 1 is its unique approach to interchangeable straps, inspired by BOVET’s patented Amadeo system. Ultimate versatility is the result. Using a completely new system created exclusively for Aperto 1, the owner is able to change the straps in just a few seconds by simply activating the pushers to remove each strap and insert an alternative one. The system couldn’t be easier or quicker, underlining the attention to the needs of collectors that defines all BOVET timepieces. Each Aperto 1 comes with two straps, and additional straps may be purchased through authorized BOVET retailers.

BOVET – Virtuoso XI Gold Tourbillon Edition

BOVET 1822 –  Virtuoso XI White Gold Tourbillon Edition 2023

 Engraving Challenge

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It stands to reason that skeletonized timepieces particularly appeal, for they put all the mechanical complexity on full display. In the 22 years since Mr. Pascal Raffy took the helm of BOVET, he has insisted on making sure the movement is visible, its high watchmaking pedigree open to be admired, while at the same time reinforcing the House’s commitment to the decorative arts.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Given this focus on mechanical artistry, it might seem a bit surprising that the new BOVET 1822 Virtuoso XI is the very first full skeleton timepiece the House has ever introduced. And what a skeleton it is.

Features & Functionality

The delicate dance when skeletonizing a movement is to remove enough material to enhance the aesthetics and completely show the inner workings, while still keeping the movement robust enough to function impeccably. Take away too much material from the bridges, for example, and they could deform and damage the performance of the movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With the Virtuoso XI, the movement was specifically conceived and designed from the start to have enough space to engrave both sides of the bridges and plates, and room to admire them, and the result is exceptional.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

More transparent than any timepiece that BOVET has ever produced, every aspect of this high watchmaking movement is on full display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The hand-engraving for the Virtuoso XI takes around 60 hours for the movement and the Writing Slope case. The engraving is done free-hand and leaves no room for mistakes. Surprisingly, the engravers, sitting quietly in the well-lit atelier, don’t seem to feel any pressure, though anyone watching them certainly does. The artisans delight in the dance of their tools as they transform a plain bridge or plate into an engraved objet d’art.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The decoration is BOVET’s own Fleurisanne motif, one that the House has used for decades. Inspired by the tree leaf pattern on Greek columns from centuries ago, this theme is one of the signatures of BOVET. The name of this motif recalls that the House is still based a stone’s throw from where it was founded – a small village named Fleurier.

The flying tourbillon movement that drives this exceptional timepiece meets BOVET’s demanding criteria of chronometry, reliability, and expression. It draws its energy from a single barrel that ensures more than 10 days of power reserve (240 hours, when the industry standard is 42-48 hours), all while maintaining the balance wheel’s oscillations at 18,000 vph.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally, the long power reserve, provided by a single barrel, would require meticulous winding if not for the spherical differential winding system. The application of this ingenious mechanism, and the multi-gear three-dimensional teeth of one of its pinions, has received two patents.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Because of this system, the number of crown turns needed for full winding of the mainspring is halved without increasing friction and forces exerted on the gears.

BOVET 1822 – Fleurier ORBIS Mundi Worldtimer Edition

BOVET 1822 Fleurier ORBIS Mundi Worldtimer Gold and Titanium 42mm Limited Edition 2022

The World is Yours
The New Orbis Mundi from BOVET 1822

Back in 1822, 200 years ago this year, founder Edouard Bovet, a watchmaker from Fleurier, Switzerland, and traveled the world. Due to this amazing history, the House of BOVET is inextricably linked to travel, and the House’s collection is complete with several double-, triple-, and world-time timepieces, all of which have been very successful with collectors around the world over the last 20 years.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As a result, multiple time zone timepieces are in the DNA of the House, and BOVET has produced a number of different variations on this theme.

In 2020, BOVET introduced the Récital 26 Chapter Two, the timepiece which received the “Mechanical Exception” award at the 2020 GPHG, featured a universal time sub dial at three o’clock, taking the multiple time zone display a step further.

Now, to celebrate BOVET’s 200th anniversary, the House is proud to introduce the Orbis Mundi.

The Need

Imagine you are on a business trip from Miami to Geneva, Switzerland, then on to Dubai, and finally finishing in Singapore. Just figuring out exactly what time it is after crossing several time zones is challenging enough, and, if you are wearing a standard world time watch, chances are the world time information on the dial is too small for your weary eyes to actually read.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To address this need, BOVET 1822 has developed a major advancement in the setting and using of the world time function – the Orbis Mundi.

This new timepiece shows all 24 time zones at a glance, thanks to its top-of-the-world display, and all functions are set using just the crown. This display makes reading the time anywhere in the world a breeze.

The world today is getting smaller and smaller, as more people are working from home and interacting more and more with others from all around the globe.

BOVET 1822 might be based above the small village of Fleurier in Switzerland, but there are BOVET collectors and partners all around the world. So, it's more important than ever to know what time it is anywhere and everywhere in the world.

The Solution

With the Orbis Mundi, reading the time in all 24 time zones is intuitive and simple, as the world cities radiate from the top of the globe so they can be viewed easily, at a glance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“As you can imagine, I travel quite a lot as head of BOVET 1822, and deal with people in many different time zones,” owner Mr. Pascal Raffy says. “I wanted an elegant timepiece that would make it easy to set and tell the time anywhere in the world. My team of amazing developers and watchmakers and I came up with a surprisingly simple yet beautiful way to display all 24 time zones.”

When Mr. Raffy was designing the world time dome of the Recital 26 Brainstorm Chapter Two, which won the “Mechanical Exception” award at the watchmaking Oscars in 2020, he already had in mind its adapted use in the Orbis Mundi.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In development for more than two years, the Orbis Mundi, Latin for “the world,” simplifies both the setting and the indications of the world timer for a new generation of watch lovers.

The Orbis Mundi, thanks to BOVET’s engineering expertise, is easy to set, using only the crown to both set the time and the 24 world cities. Turn the crown counter-clockwise to set the hours and minutes, and clockwise to set the unique 24 world time zone dial.

Exquisitely finished, the Orbis Mundi stands out for its ease of use and emblematic Fleurier case, a true symbol of two centuries of watchmaking excellence. The ergonomic 42mm Grade 5 titanium or 5N red gold case provides optimal comfort no matter the size of the wearer's wrist, thanks to its slim profile (11.25mm) and its iconic real-sapphire-cabochon-topped crown and BOVET bow at 12 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In addition to clear and easily readable hours and minutes, this timepiece opens up the dial to display the in-house BOVET balance wheel and regulating organ, with its three-arm rotating second hand and a 20-second Aventurine glass dial at 6 o'clock.

On the right side of the world-time dial, which is pure Aventurine glass, is the power reserve indicator, highlighting the incredible and very useful seven days of power reserve with one single barrel. In fact, BOVET 1822 has a history of impressive power reserves, all due to the fact that Mr. Raffy is a collector and knows how important long power reserves are for complicated timepieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sapphire glass of the screw-down back lets collectors appreciate every detail of this finely finished manual-wind manufacture movement, polished, angled, and decorated like the House of BOVET’s high complications, thanks to the work of the in-house artisans.

The exhibition back is also a hallmark from the history of Maison BOVET: the BOVET brothers are famous for inventing the see-through cover during the 1800s to showcase their finely engraved movements.

The House of BOVET is one of the few completely integrated manufactures in the watchmaking industry. Due to the fact that BOVET produces 95% of the components that go into its timepieces (the only things not produced in-house are the barrel springs, sapphire crystals and the straps), the House uses the term “Swiss Handcrafted” instead of “Swiss Made,” as the Swiss Made barrier, 60%, is too low.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Orbis Mundi suits today’s global society – even if we can’t travel as freely as we could before, it’s more important than ever to know what time it is anywhere and everywhere in the world.

The Orbis Mundi from BOVET 1822, exemplifying uniqueness at its best.

After 200 years of BOVET history, now more than ever, the world is yours.

The BOVET 1822 VIRTUOSO VIII Chapter Two Reimagined

When the Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two tourbillon was introduced last year, it was hailed as an incredible expression of artisanal watchmaking, decorative arts, mechanical ingenuity, and innovation.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

his year, the House of BOVET is excited to introduce a new aesthetic that brings this traditional expression of high watchmaking squarely into the 21st century, with titanium cases in brilliant black Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) and Super-LumiNova dials.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Placed side-by-side with the original, the newest Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two is a completely new timepiece, modern and sporty, while still maintaining its high watchmaking excellence. This is a theme moving forward for the House of BOVET – using interesting materials, colors, treatments, and displays that modernize these intricate timepieces, while still emphasizing the artisanal nature of the Maison’s in-house production.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Speaking of in-house production, BOVET 1822’s processes greatly benefited from the incredible three-year collaboration with Rolls-Royce that resulted in the stunning pair of bespoke timepieces and the mounting system in the dashboard of the Boat Tail. Like participation in Formula 1 provides a trickle-down of technology into an automaker’s passenger cars, the intense research, development, and testing (including crash testing) of the Boat Tail timepieces resulted in engineering and production gains that have impacted every aspect of BOVET’s manufacture. Every single collection has benefitted from this exchange of engineering and technology, including the brand Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two.

The Super-LumiNova coated dials, not just indices or markings but the entire dial surface, are available in Yellow, Blue, Salmon, Turquoise, Green, and Violet. Once charged, these dials really pop, showcasing the luminosity in a unique way. You will be surprised and delighted the first time you see these timepieces when they transition from the light into the dark. Now you can see BOVET in a completely different light – the glow of Super-LumiNova.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Over the past few years, the House of BOVET has been integrating Super-LumiNova into its timepieces in unique ways – in the lunar surface of the moon phase, on the sunshine dials of various collections – but this is the first time that Super-LumiNova has been applied so strongly onto the dials, a true statement of modernity.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Grade 5 titanium cases of these new Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two timepieces have been treated with brilliant black DLC, creating a “dark side” that contrasts beautifully with the bright and vibrant dial colors.

The Details

The new Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two includes everything else that made this introduction special – the patented flying tourbillon with ten days of power reserve, the patented accelerated rewinding system, the writing slope case and sapphire crystal aperture, the fine movement decoration, the big date display, and the two dials forming a horizontal number eight, which in numerology and in multiple cultures symbolizes luck, perfection, and infinity.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For exceptional legibility, the seconds’ display is carefully designed to be displayed by a Super-LumiNova-coated sub-dial. The arrow of the index hangs over the surface of the delicate circular dial showing the 60 seconds. The easy, precise readability offered by this display, even in the dark, is remarkable. To achieve this, the seconds' dial must be affixed to the plate during the initial assembly phases, which makes the watchmakers’ work even more delicate when working with the Super-LumiNova coating, as one scratch will necessitate starting over.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is hard to imagine that a Super-LumiNova dial with such a diameter, hanging over the date disks, could allow for such a large date display. The space between the units' disk and the hours' disk is reduced to optimize readability, making it as large as possible for enhanced legibility. The watchmakers also did not forget the date correction, which does not even require removing the timepiece from one’s wrist, and is performed simply by pressing down on the real sapphire cabochon crown. The rapid date corrector and iconic 12-o’clock positioning of the crown effectively avoid any accidental date correction.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The movement that drives this exceptional timepiece meets BOVET’s demanding criteria of chronometry, reliability, and expression. It draws its energy from a single barrel that ensures more than ten days of power reserve, all while maintaining the balance wheel's oscillations at 18,000 vph.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally, the power reserve of over ten days, provided by a single barrel, would require meticulous winding if not for the spherical differential winding system. The application of this ingenious mechanism and the multi-gear three-dimensional teeth of one of its pinions, have received two patents. Because of this differential winding system, the number of crown turns needed for full winding of the spring is halved without increasing friction and forces exerted on the gears.

Now You See Them

The Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two limited edition (8 timepieces) is a modern interpretation of BOVET’s proprietary and patented flying tourbillon with a big date and lengthy power reserve.

The Super-LumiNova-coated dials and black DLC titanium cases are a true 21st-century departure for BOVET, and a definite harbinger of things to come.
