JACOB & CO. – ASTRONOMIA SOLAR Planet Edition

JACOB & CO.ASTRONOMIA SOLAR Planet Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon Gold Limited Edition

ASTRONOMIA SOLAR

After 2 years of development, Jacob & Co. introduces at Baselworld the Astronomia Solar featuring the eight planets of our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Jacob & Co. pushed the Astronomia experience into a 44.5mm case: the Astronomia Solar, a movement of 34.55mm diameter and 439 components in constant bi-directional rotation and a representation of the solar system, enhancing even more the celestial reality.

The vertically built Jacob & Co. manufacture caliber JCAM19 boasts 3 arms:
  • The first arm holds the hour & minute dial made of sapphire, it rotates counter-clockwise to ensure that 12 o’clock is always in the correct position, regardless of where the subdial is, thanks to a patented differential system.
  • The second arm holds a two axes (10 min/60seconds) gravitational flying tourbillon decorated with a Jacob & Co. logo on its cage.
  • The third arm holds an hand-engraved globe of the Earth rotating around its own axis in 60 seconds and completing one full revolution of the dial in 10 minutes
The center of the movement is adorned with a Citrine Jacob cut® of approx. 1.5ct.

The bi-directional movement rotates clockwise to complete a full 360 degree revolution in just ten minutes, the aventurine base rotates in the opposite direction at exactly the same speed, creating an accelerated, stylized view of the solar system.

The idea behind the Jacob & Co. Astronomia collection has always been to highlight, in a playful and suitably gem-set environment, the place of the Earth in our solar system. Creating a zero gravity effect. It is, after all, the very foundation of our concept of time. In the Astronomia Solar, all eight planets in the solar system are given a place on the dial for the first time, with the sun at the center in the form of a 1.5ct Citrine with the unmistakable Jacob Cut® and its 288 facets.

The hand-engraved globe of the Earth rotates about its own axis once every 60 seconds and completes one full revolution of the dial in 10 minutes, as part of an assembly that also houses the subsidiary hour and minute dial and a one-minute flying tourbillon.

The reduced case size, new functions and faster rotation speed are all made possible by an entirely new in-house movement. The hand-wound Jacob & Co. calibre JCAM19 beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), which is faster than any of the other Astronomia models.

Yet in spite of its smaller diameter, at just 34.55mm, it actually comprises 447 components, excluding the precious and semi-precious stones, which is more than in the other Astronomia models.

Continuing the Astronomia tradition of an abstract depiction of the universe that combines high-end Swiss watchmaking with Jacob Arabo’s talent for sourcing and his innovation in cutting the finest gemstones, the new Astronomia Solar expands the horizons both literally and figuratively.

JACOB & CO. – ASTRONOMIA Tourbillon Black Ceramic - Black & Red Movement Edition

JACOB & CO. ASTRONOMIA Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon Black Ceramic - Black & Red Movement Limited Edition
ASTRONOMIA Tourbillon

Black Ceramic - Black & Red Movement

Presented at Baselworld 2018, this new variation of its iconic Astronomia Tourbillon watch from Jacob & Co. offers a sleek and sophisticated take on the original design, housing its signature high-tech movements in case composed entirely of black ceramic. The pared-down setting immediately draws the eye to the watch’s four-armed vertical movements and further emphasizes the dramatic allure of the triple-axis gravitational tourbillon.

A spherical sculpture depicting Mars (rather than the Astronomia Tourbillon’s staple sculpture of the Earth) dances around the watch’s dial, which displays the hours and minutes. Accompanying the sculpture of Mars is a Jacob-cut rubellite, whose 288 facets sparkle like a fiery sun against the deep blue, star-studded aventurine background. Between the sculpture of mars, the Jacob-cut rubellite, and the red movement finishing, red accents reign supreme in the penumbra of the black ceramic case.

As with all the models within the Astronomia collection, the Astronomia Black Ceramic’s sapphire dome case protects the dial as though it were a precious jewel, while the transparent sides offer a clear view of the timepiece’s complex movements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Astronomia Black Ceramic’s refined aesthetic sheds new light on the artistry of its gravitational triple axis tourbillon. Although initially designed to counteract the effects of terrestrial gravitation on the caliber’s mobile components, the system gains in effectiveness by rotating on three axes: the cage housing the escapement goes around the balance wheel axis in 60 seconds and completes a revolution over itself in 2.5 minutes while the entire tourbillon covers a full cycle around the watch’s central axis in 10 minutes. The triple rotation ensures the extreme precision of the highly complicated timepiece.

Like a satellite following its trajectory in infinite space, the Astronomia Black Ceramic’s off-center dial, indicating the hours and minutes, rotates around the watch’s center axis in 10 minutes. Jacob & Co.’s exclusive JCAM24 caliber design, with its patented differential system, allows the dial to remain vertical throughout its revolution. The vertical positioning offers clear legibility of the time, which is further enhanced by the contrast of the watch’s rhodium-plated hands and red-accented Roman numerals.

The Astronomia Black Ceramic uses the capabilities of its exclusive movement to set a lacquered magnesium terrestrial planet and an exceptional 288-facet Jacob-cut rubellite in motion under its glass dome. The lacquered magnesium sculpture of Mars and Jacob-cut rubellite revolve around the tourbillon’s cage. The dial, indicating the hours and minutes, is also in perpetual motion, circling the watch’s face like a space station orbiting in a sidereal void.

JACOB & CO. – ASTRONOMIA Tourbillon OCTOPUS Sapphire Case Edition

JACOB & CO.ASTRONOMIA Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon OCTOPUS Sapphire Case 50mm Unique Piece

JACOB & CO. PRESENTS
THE ASTRONOMIA OCTOPUS

Jacob & Co. Founder Jacob Arabo draws upon the brilliance and mystery of nature with the introduction of the brand’s entirely new Astronomia model, the Astronomia Octopus.

Recognized amongst the most intelligent creatures on Earth, octopi complement the world of watchmaking
with their complex nature, symmetrical composition, and mesmerizing movements. The Astronomia Octopus
manifests these natural synergies through whimsical design, weaving a hand-crafted sculpture of an octopus
through the Astronomia’s signature gravitational triple-axis tourbillon.

Taking into consideration both the sophistication of the design and the comfort of the wearer, the intricately handcrafted sculpture of the Octopus is composed of titanium. While titanium is ideal for adorning the movement without adding significant weight to the piece (the octopus weighs just 2.83 grams) the material is notoriously difficult to engrave or sculpt, making it all the more difficult to bring the piece to life.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the typical manner of an octopus, the sculpture appears fully entwined in the JCAM16 manually wound caliber. Its tentacles wind around the Earth, the sun, the time and the triple-axis tourbillon. The central part of the movement, where the octopus is screwed to the central axis so that it may revolve around the dial like all the other components, is too modified from the Astronomia collection’s prior models to accommodate the new gold-plated sculpture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The first Astronomia model to include a sculpture in the core of its composition, the Astronomia Octopus is displayed as a true work of art, cased in a new sapphire monoblock casing that allows the sculpture and complications to be admired from multiple angles. The entirely transparent monoblock case was originally created for the brand’s limited addition Astronomia Flawless. In both models, it creates the illusion that the complications inside the timepiece are suspended in mid-air, as the only non-sapphire elements are the two bows on the back to wind the movement and set the time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

he sapphire components of the Astronomia Octopus take a staggering 37 weeks to produce and each component requires at least a dozen different operations in its production. This excludes the time it takes to engrave the piece and the octopus sculpture, as well as the time allocated to assemble and meticulously hand-finish the movements.

Since its initial launch just under three years ago, Jacob & Co.’s Astronomia Tourbillon has consistently evolved with the introduction of each new model. Because of the additional layer of complexity added by the octopus, the Astronomia Octopus is piece-unique.

JACOB & CO. – ASTRONOMIA Gravitational Tourbillon FLAWLESS Sapphire Case Edition

JACOB & CO.ASTRONOMIA Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon FLAWLESS Sapphire Case 50mm Edition

JACOB & CO. PRESENTS
THE ASTRONOMIA FLAWLESS

Jacob & Co. blends the intricate world of high jewelry with that of haute horlogerie to introduce the latest addition to the brand’s signature Astronomia collection, the Astronomia Flawless.

While the timepiece offers an exquisite display of immaculate aesthetics, there is multifaceted meaning behind the new Astronomia’s name. “Flawless” not only refers to the watch’s impeccable appearance, but it is also the term for the highest grade of diamond clarity according to the Gemological Institute of America’s diamond grading scale. For a diamond to be declared flawless, no inclusions or blemishes should be visible under 10x magnification. Flawless is therefore a fitting benchmark for Jacob & Co.’s evolutionary interpretation of the Astronomia collection’s signature sapphire case.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The large sapphire crystal has been a consistent design element of Jacob & Co.’s Astronomia collection since the introduction of the first Astronomia Tourbillon in 2014. The transparency of the case allows the movement of the gravitational triple axis tourbillon be clearly visible from multiple angles.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Last year, Jacob & Co. increased the transparency of the case and the visibility of the Astronomia’s complications with the 2016 Baseworld novelty, the Astronomia Clarity. Nonetheless, in the spirit of constant improvement, the Astronomia Flawless again elevates the level of transparency offered by the Astronomia Clarity, with the introduction of the Astronomia Flawless’s monoblock sapphire crystal case. The sophisticated craftsmanship of the monoblock sapphire crystal creates the illusion that the complications within the case are floating effortlessly in midair.

To achieve this appearance, a number of the collection’s components that were previously produced in precious metal are instead made in sapphire crystal: the one-piece case middle and lugs, the dial (a blue-coloured sapphire) and even the buckle. These changes have added a considerable layer of complexity to the new watch, as the production of the case middle alone requires 15 individual steps that account for around 326 hours of work, the case back requires around 297 hours of work, the dial 280 hours and the buckle 295 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

If you add to this the 288 hours required for the production of the domed crystal evident in all Astronomia models, you have a total of 37 weeks of production for just the sapphire components – excluding engraving! For this reason, only nine individually numbered pieces of the Astronomia Flawless will be made.

The manually wound JCAM16 caliber with its triple axis tourbillon, rotating earth and sun and subsidiary hour and minute dial has also evolved in the Astronomia Flawless.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A rose-gold finish has been applied to the titanium bridges and the central axis is adorned with a 2.23-carat Jacob Cut® yellow diamonds representing the sun, in addition to the 1-carat diamond, which also has the 288 facets of the Jacob Cut®. Although the dial appears the same as on other Astronomia models, the dial on the Astronomia Flawless is actually made out of sapphire crystal and has been given a blue coating.

JACOB & CO. – ASTRONOMIA Clarity Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon

JACOB & CO. ASTRONOMIA Clarity Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon Limited Edition NEW

Set to debut at Baselworld 2016, the Astronomia Clarity offers a sapphire case variation of Jacob & Co.’s iconic manufacturing movement, the Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon.

Astronomia Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon – the Master Stroke

While all traditional watch movements are engineered horizontally, Jacob & Co. revolutionized the watchmaking industry in 2014 by presenting the Astronomia Grand Complication, the first vertically built Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                       BIG FOTO

This impressive tridimensional movement captures the heart of watch-lovers through a mesmerizing ballet of the four satellites in constant motion:
1st satellite: Gravitational tourbillon cage rotating on 3 axes:
  •  1st Axis - 60 seconds,
  •  2nd Axis - 5 minutes,
  •  3rd Axis - central axis in 20 minutes
2nd satellite: Hours, minutes dial rotating in 20 minutes on the central axis, equipped with a patented differential gears system;
3rd satellite: 288 faceted “Jacob-cut” spherical diamond rotating in 60 seconds on itself and in 20 minutes;
4th satellite: Magnesium globe hand-painted rotating in 60 seconds on itself and in 20 minutes.

The exploration of the Astronomia cosmos

To enhance the delicately crafted and massively engineered Astronomia tridimensional movement, Jacob & Co. took on an ambitious initiative and developed a sapphire Clarity case.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                       BIG FOTO

The sapphire of the Astronomia Clarity is crystalized using the Kyropoulos method to reach the highest level of purity possible. Extreme care was taken and unique tools were specially developed to shape the sapphire.

Indeed, only a diamond tool is capable of sculpting the Astronomia Clarity sapphire case and barrel bridge. The finest craftsmen were employed to finish the 16.9° beveled edge and to polish the internal cones, which requires a minimum of 30 hours to complete.

The Clarity

This special Astronomia collection wears the name: “Clarity,“ as in the state or quality of being clear and transparent to the eye. Completed with a double anti-reflective treatment, the dome shaped crystal top, back and barrel bridge play with the highest level of transparency, offering a 360° panorama of the Gravitational Astronomia movement.
