ARMIN STROM UNVEILS THE ONE WEEK FIRST EDITION THE SUCCESSOR TO ITS FIRST-EVER MANUFACTURE MOVEMENT

Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, 29 August, 2023: More architectural, more open and housed in a new streamlined steel case with an integrated bracelet: Armin Strom completely reimagines one of its most seminal models from the last decade, the One Week, in an all-new form. Debuting as the One Week First Edition limited to 25 examples, it further solidifies Armin Strom’s position as a full-fledged independent manufacture producing unprecedented mechanical marvels.

Maker of movements. The true horology connoisseur’s manufacture. Armin Strom stands out as one of the handful of exclusive independent watch brands that can pride itself in conceiving, developing and building some of the most exceptional mechanical watches around. Back in 2010, the brand unveiled its very first watch called the One Week featuring a movement that was developed and manufactured in house.

Equipped with a seven-day power reserve and designed with symmetrical harmony in mind, the One Week would lay the foundation for many of Armin Strom’s groundbreaking developments, placing the brand on the radar of discerning collectors. Now, Armin Strom is revisiting its very first calibre in an all-new design and construction that’s bound to make the One Week a staple model in the brand’s lineup.

As Armin Strom founder Serge Michel noted, “When we decided to revisit the One Week, we knew from the beginning that we wanted it to be an all-occasions watch: sporty yet sophisticated, intricate yet legible, and filled with immersive little details that even the most demanding collector can appreciate. It was also important for us that the new One Week be instantly recognizable as an Armin Strom by integrating and further refining many of the design elements that have become characteristic of our more recent creations.”

A RADICAL CONSTRUCTION

As devotees of transparent horology, Armin Strom makes it a point to always feature kinetic mechanical elements on the dial side. The One Week First Edition takes this core Armin Strom trait a step further. Completely reengineered and redesigned, the manual-winding movement is as sculptural as it gets. Form, function, aesthetics and ergonomics are all harmoniously brought into the foreground, resulting in a piece of otherwise traditional horology executed in a dynamic, radical way.

“The One Week from 2010 holds a special place for the Armin Strom manufacture as it was the first movement we completely developed and built in-house. We went far beyond simply giving it a facelift, as it is in fact an entirely redesigned and reengineered movement. From the two barrels working in series for better isochronism to the 3D power reserve display and the increased beat rate, the new One Week is definitely a milestone achievement for our team in Biel,” remarked Claude Greisler, master watchmaker and co-founder of the revitalised Armin Strom.

FAR MORE THAN A REMAKE

True to its name and just like its predecessor, the One Week delivers an impressive seven-day power reserve. But that’s where the similarities end. The new manual-winding ARM21 calibre features two mainspring barrels, which work in series to provide consistent levels of energy to the gear train.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Held by two finger-style bridges, the barrels are symmetrically arranged on the right portion of the completely open dial. The manual winding ritual takes on a hypnotic choreography, as the motion of two ratchet wheels winding up the two barrels in opposite directions is entirely visible from the dial side.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

One of the most distinctive features of the new One Week is its power reserve indicator. Keeping with the architectural depth of the movement, the power reserve is indicated by a cone system, inspired by pocket watches. This consists of a mirror-polished cone, which is driven by a conical gear on the opposite side of the dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

New movement, new beat rate. Another major evolution in the new One Week is the oscillating frequency of the regulating organ. As it is designed as an all-occasions watch that can take on dynamic activities, the beat rate has been increased from 2.5 Hz to 3.5 Hz (25,200 vph). This higher frequency, which offers a more stable chronometric performance, meant that the entire gear train had to be recalculated and reconfigured.

THE PURSUIT OF BALANCE AND DEPTH

Another surprising first for Armin Strom is the placement of the hour and minute hands. Normally, Armin Strom watches feature offset hour and minute hands, either on a subsidiary dial as small hands or slightly off from the centre as large hands. In the One Week, the faceted hour and minute hands filled with Super-LumiNova are perfectly positioned in the centre of the open dial, further enhancing its visual balance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In fact, compared to the previous generation of the One Week, which featured a partially open dial to expose the movement, the new One Week was conceived to be much more three-dimensional. It totally foregoes a traditional dial, instead adopting a contemporary architecture, with various movement elements positioned in such a way that they can be explored from many angles. The bridge holding the hands has been designed with a geometric form to rise above the mainplate.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Keeping legibility optimal, the movement is surrounded by a chapter ring set with baton indices filled with Super-LumiNova. The small seconds at 9 o’clock are displayed on a small black dial, emblazoned with the brand’s “AS” logo.

ALL IN THE EXECUTION

Like all Armin Strom creations, from the purest to the most complex, the One Week is a masterclass in haute horlogerie hand-finishing. Straight and circular grained surfaces, chamfered and polished bevels, Geneva-striped plates and polished screws and sinks are clearly applied by expert hands. The One Week First Edition stands out in particular with its cool light blue PVD-coloured mainplate and bridges.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The One Week’s micromechanical sculpture of a movement is housed in a suitably contemporary case. Crafted in stainless steel, it measures 41 mm in width and only 10.6 mm in height, surprisingly compact proportions for a calibre of such intense depth. Paired with an integrated steel bracelet consisting of “H”-shaped satin-brushed and polished links, the overall design is holistic with an emphasis on ergonomics to make for a perfect everyday wear piece full of mechanical intrigue.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The One Week First Edition is limited to 25 pieces and will be delivered with an extended warranty period of 10 years, instead of Armin Strom’s usual 5-year warranty. It will also be distinguished from future editions with its light blue PVD coloured mainplate and bridges.

ARMIN STROM – Mirrored Force Resonance – First Edition

ARMIN STROM Mirrored Force ResonanceFirst Edition 2022

Armin Strom unveils the next generation of its Mirrored Force Resonance timepiece: a state-of-the-art technological marvel in a strikingly elegant design

The Mirrored Force Resonance takes on a strikingly elegant form with a newly designed case, movement and dial, incorporating Armin Strom’s unique and chronometrically superlative Resonance technology in new proportions and revealing more of its innovative movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Armin Strom took the watch industry by storm in 2016 when it unveiled the Mirrored Force Resonance, a watch that exploits the physical phenomenon of resonance in an ingenious and unprecedented way. It set a new standard of chronometric precision and regularity by achieving what watchmakers once believed to be impossible.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Revisiting the independent manufacture’s milestone creation in 2016 from a new vantage point, the entirely redesigned Mirrored Force Resonance takes the winning formula of superior chronometric stability and reimagines it using a new, refined design language. From the outside, the case has been redesigned from scratch in more slender proportions (43mm x 11.55mm), with slimmer, more elegant lugs, as well as a very subtle signature Armin Strom “lip” at 6 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The raised sapphire glass box reveals the innovative and truly one-of-a-kind movement from multiple angles and has been redesigned for a more open, three-dimensional look. Most notably, the two balance bridges have been openworked for more visual harmony between the two synchronized balanced wheels and the off-centre dial. The pusher at 2 o’clock allows the two running seconds indicators – which rotate in mirrored clockwise and counter-clockwise motions – to be reset to zero and visually track the state of resonance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Turning the watch over reveals the extent of the movement’s complete redesign. Inspired by the golden age of precision marine chronometry, the engraved main plate outlines the specific characteristics of the Mirrored Force Resonance in raised text. Highlighting the fact that the ingenuity of the Resonance is having two movements beating in sync with independent energy sources and gear trains, the symmetry of the movement is accentuated with its mirrored arrangement of open bridges and gears. This open execution also allows the Armin Strom manufacture to showcase its expertise in hand finishing while also shining a light on the brand’s history as a preeminent maker of skeleton watches. The wider hand-polished chamfers on the bridges and countersinks and the mix of satin-brushed and mirror-polished surfaces also exude a superlative and distinctly haute horlogerie quality that can only be achieved by the hands of skilled artisans.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Other mechanical features have been updated in addition to the architecture and reengineered movement, such as the ratchet wheels and pawls that now take their inspiration from those found in pocket watches and provide a smoother tactile experience when winding.

Claude Greisler, Co-Founder and Master Watchmaker at ArminStrom, comments, “The openworked Resonance movement further highlights the ingenuity of our unique and  patented system. Even more incredibly, we’ve made the new Mirrored Force Resonance slimmer, paying particular attention to the ergonomics and overall proportions of this exceptional timepiece.”

An Exceptional Debut Series

As part of a new tradition at Armin Strom that began with other recent collections, the First Edition of the Mirror Force Resonance is limited to 25 pieces and is made even more special by a number of details that are exclusive to this series. First, the two finger-style bridges between the ratchet wheel and barrels are crafted in white gold. Secondly, the opaline dial has been created in a warm “Black Gold” colour. And finally, the watch comes with a 10-year warranty instead of the usual Armin Strom 5-year warranty.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Commenting on the debut series of the new Mirrored Force Resonance, Serge Michel, founder of Armin Strom, remarked, “The Mirrored Force Resonance has become one of Armin’s Strom’s most evocative creations, and its evolution has been warmly welcomed by our collectors and partners. The enthusiastic reception and high demand for the First Edition of 25 timepieces mean we can’t wait to show you the Manufacture Edition, which will be unveiled in early 2023.”

Armin Strom’s patented Resonance Clutch Spring

Long considered the “holy grail” of watchmaking, the physical phenomenon of resonance enables more regular timekeeping by synchronizing two balance wheels that oscillate in opposite directions at the same time. Throughout the history of watchmaking and even today, watches incorporating this phenomenon are few and far between. In fact, only a handful of watchmakers in the entire history of watchmaking have attempted to harness the potential of resonance, with varying levels of success and reproducible reliability.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With its groundbreaking and patented Resonance Cluch Spring, Armin Strom has succeeded where other watchmakers could not. Conceived, developed and produced entirely at the Armin Strom manufacture in Biel, the Resonance Clutch Spring is the result of years of intensive research by Claude Greisler and the manufacture. Crafted from a single piece of steel, the Resonance Clutch Spring is designed to transfer energy between both hairsprings and quickly bring the balance wheels into resonance. Armin Strom’s newest generation of resonance is the quickest and most reliable on the market, synchronizing faster than any other watch that uses resonance and remaining in a resonant state longer than any other.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thanks to the Resonance Clutch Spring, a flexible suspension connecting the two hairsprings with its balance wheels, all of Armin Strom’s Resonance watches are more resistant to shocks or vibrations than standard mechanical movements. Precision and consistency are, of course, the ultimate goals of mechanical watchmaking and resonance plays a crucial role in helping these amazing watches keep time consistently over days, weeks and months. Armin Strom’s goal is a watch that the owner knows will tell the time consistently, day in and day out.

The Resonance Clutch Spring is made of steel and performs more consistently than high-tech materials such as silicon, and withstands temperature fluctuations well. It also makes the Resonance Clutch Spring future proof by using proven materials and modern methods to increase longevity and improve serviceability.

Strikingly cool monochrome: The new Armin Strom Gravity Equal Force Ultimate Sapphire

Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, 20st September 2021: Armin Strom, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer known for its edgy, eye-catching transparent mechanics, has just launched a rare and stunning new version of its milestone Gravity Equal Force timepiece. With its off-center grey-toned sapphire dial, the strikingly cool monochrome watch offers an extraordinary view of the exquisitely-finished manufacture movement and further enhances the brand’s reputation for its irrepressible, exuberant independence.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Armin Strom’s Gravity Equal Force has made quite an impression on watch enthusiasts since it was first launched in 2019. And for good reason: it is the world’s first automatic watch with constant force transmission, which results in consistent power delivery to the balance. In short, it means that the watch always delivers flawlessly constant precision. Its ASB19 caliber offers a power reserve of 72 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The timepiece stands out not only with its groundbreaking technology but by a design and craftsmanship that set it apart from every other watch. With the launch of the Gravity Equal Force Ultimate Sapphire, Armin Strom has reinforced its commitment to the transparent mechanics that have been generating an industry-wide buzz since the brand’s beginnings. The watch is distinguished in equal part by its technical and aesthetic innovations:

  • The movement’s black plate guilloche pattern was created by hand by the celebrated Finnish watchmaker Kari Voutilainen, a close friend of Armin Strom’s founders.
  • The off-center grey-toned sapphire dial offers an unobstructed view of the fascinating mechanics inside the case and emphasizes the brand’s passion for transparent mechanics, which are at the core of its design philosophy.
  • The bridges are coated with dark grey ruthenium; the barrel and the micro rotor are coated with rhodium.
  • The Gravity Equal Force’s ASB19 movement includes a “stop work” mechanism that prevents the mainspring from fully unwinding, thus leveraging only the part of the mainspring’s unwinding process that can deliver power most consistently.
  • The steel hands with Super-LumiNova® filling are manufactured by Armin Strom and like all of the visible parts of the movement, are meticulously hand-finished in-house

Claude Greisler, Armin Strom’s co-founder and head watchmaker, points out that the new watch’s cool, understated monochrome design will appeal to fans of the brand’s design philosophy: “We’ve re-imagined the Gravity Equal Force to more fully embrace our passion for transparent mechanics, while adding complementary aesthetic complexity that enhances the watch’s special visual impact.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Serge Michel, founder of Armin Strom adds: “The special version of our GEF was extremely well received in early presentations to collectors so we hope to be able to produce 30 more watches next year in addition to the 15 from this year. That may, however, be too ambitious because our capacities are limited and it always has to be a rare piece, which is why we have decided that half of all future productions will be placed on a first-come/first-served waiting list for those who inquire via our website.”

The Gravity Equal Force Ultimate Sapphire: exquisite in-house design and production

This breathtaking new Gravity Equal Force timepiece was designed and produced in-house at the brand’s manufacture in Biel. Like every Armin Strom watch, its movement has been assembled twice.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

After its first assembly, the movement was painstakingly disassembled and each individual part was cleaned, dried, reassembled and lubricated before being meticulously regulated, tested, and returned to the case.

The Gravity Equal Force: redefining the horological landscape

Launched in 2019, the milestone timepiece demonstrates Armin Strom’s core principle: to bring innovation to every watch. It combines the brand’s celebrated passion for transparent mechanics and its distinctive design as well as its commitment to redefining the horological landscape with every new product.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Gravity Equal Force Ultimate Sapphire will be available from October 2021 in a limited quantity of 15 pieces for 2021. Due to the limited production capacity, the special timepiece will be available subsequently in a very small number of pieces per year.

ARMIN STROM – TRIBUTE 1 Edition

ARMIN STROMTRIBUTE 1 Stainless Steel 38 Edition 2021

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Introducing the Tribute 1: a modern reinterpretation of the haute horology dress watch that’s both technically-innovative and beautifully hand-finished.

A Modern Classic

Today’s Armin Strom is heir to a long tradition of manually-wound dress watch production. The Tribute 1 revisits that history with a watch characterized by its modern aesthetics, classic proportions, technical distinction and exceptional hand-finishing.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Tribute 1 is offered in a classically-proportioned case measuring 38mm in diameter, with a height of just 9mm. The crown of the manual wound calibre is located at 2 o’clock, enhancing comfort while conveying an avant-garde sensibility. The lugs are intentionally slender, enhancing the elegant appearance of the timepiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The distinctive dial of the Tribute 1 seems to magically transition between shades of grey in variable lighting conditions, with a particular affinity for natural light. The plate positioned adjacent to the off-center dial, is embellished with a spectacular grenage finish that adds texture to the dial. The hand polishing of the solid white gold barrel bridge, positioned to the front of the watch, requires an average of 12 hours to complete. The barrel, visible on the dial-side of the timepiece, is similarly meticulously hand-polished.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The meticulous polishing of the hands, which were designed specifically for the Tribute 1, are also extremely time-consuming to produce. The gear train bridge on the backside is beveled and polished in 60° – a process that’s far more complex to execute than the standard approach; requiring twice as long to complete.

HOROLOGICAL DISTINCTION

In keeping with the System 78 commitment to horological distinction, the innovative motor barrel developed for the ‘Tribute 1’ is distinguished by an arbor that turns around the mainspring within the barrel itself, making it far more efficient while also conserving space.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The inaugural release of the “Tribute 1” is priced at an intentionally-accessible CHF 13,900 and is limited to just 25 pieces. The Tribute 1 is further distinguished its white gold barrel bridge and a 10-year warranty, exactly double the standard warranty offered by Armin Strom.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The barrel bridge is executed in solid white gold, a detail that is specific to this inaugural version of the Tribute 1. The ‘Tribute 1’ is contemporary, technically-innovative and beautifully finished Exceptional Haute Horology Finishing. "We believe that exceptional hand-finishing, presented in the context of a modern aesthetic design sensibility, is the key to a modern dress watch revival" said Claude Greisler, Master Watchmaker and co-founder of the revitalized Armin Strom.

We are the heirs to a long tradition of manually-wound dress watch design at Armin Strom. The Tribute 1 revisits that history with a watch of classical proportions that is technically-innovative and beautifully hand-finished. The ‘Tribute 1’ is my reinterpretation of the classic haute horology dress watch, adapted with a modern aesthetic sensibility.”
Claude Greisler, Co-Founder and Master Watchmaker

Exceptional Haute Horology Finishing

"We're the heirs to a long tradition of manually-wound dress watch design at Armin Strom; but like much of the rest of the market, we had moved away from that" said Greisler. "Over time, this became a source of deep regret for me - and I was ultimately inspired to do something about it. I've been obsessed with every detail of this timepiece, particularly when it comes to finishing. Hand polishing the dial-side of each barrel bridge takes over 12 hours to complete.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To make the inaugural iteration even more special, we chose to produce that bridge in solid white gold. The gear train bridge on the backside is beveled and polished in 60° - a process that's far more complex to execute and as a result takes twice as long. The polishing of the hands that I designed for this watch was also extremely time-consuming. The barrel is hand polished and provides 100 hours of autonomous operation. The Caliber AMW21 is adorned with Côtes de Genève, the jewel sinks are polished to a gleaming conclusion and the mainplate is circular grained. The balance cock and the stepped escape wheel cock deliver a three-dimensional allure, while their edges are hand beveled to convey an overall sense of luxury.
"

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The "Tribute 1" is also more classic in its dimensions than any of my more recent designs," said Greisler, "with a diameter of 38mm and a height of just 9mm. The crown is located at 2 o'clock; a nod to modern design that also enhances wearer comfort."

A Contrarian Bet On A Modern Dress Watch Revival

"The 'Tribute 1' is contemporary, technically-innovative and beautifully finished. I love it - and I believe that our collectors will too." said Serge Michel, co-founder. "At a time when so many of us have spent so much time without any formal social interaction, the looming end of the global pandemic represents a symbolic return to normality - and hopefully a return to the luxury of social gatherings that we may have previously taken for granted. In that context, the acquisition of a dress watch can be seen as an expression of hope - and a meaningful connection to both the past and the future" said Michel.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

"Years ago, we were told by almost everyone that there was no economic model that could possibly justify a low-volume independent bringing all of its fabrication in-house," said co-founder Serge Michel. "The equipment is expensive and it requires a lot of physical space. We followed our passion and did it anyway. And that decision paid off. We've since come to the conclusion that following our horological passions will probably eventually make financial sense, even when we can't articulate exactly how that will play out. Fortunately, we have the luxury of taking risks and following our passion. The "Tribute 1" isn't just a manifestation of that passion, it's a 'tribute' to it. It's simultaneously our tribute to the classic haute horology dress watch, adapted with a modern aesthetic sensibility."

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The highly efficient motor barrel in the 'Tribute 1' is unusual in that the arbor turns around the mainspring within the barrel itself, which makes it more efficient while conserving space.

System 78 – A new entry to Armin Strom

The System 78 collection  offers fine watchmaking, impeccable hand-finishing and a number of innovative horological 'firsts' while maintaining an accessible price point. Recognizing the passion for haute-horology among many that have historically been excluded from access to fine watchmaking, Armin Strom has committed itself to the consistently dedicating of a portion of its limited production capacity to democratizing access to haute horology timepieces. The collection embodies the watchmaking sensibilities of Claude Greisler and Serge Michel, co-founders of the revitalized Manufacture Armin Strom, who were both born in 1978. .

Armin Strom: A fully integrated manufacture

While Armin Strom is a vertically integrated, complete horological manufacture, no new watch movement would ever have seen the light of day were it not for Claude Greisler, who puts ideas such as the one for the revolutionary Mirrored Force Resonance movement down on paper before they are transferred to computer-aided design programs to start modelling the movement. Like so many things at Armin Strom all of this is done in-house, with the dimensions calculated down to a precision of one micron to provide the inputs for the machines that will eventually produce the smallest of components.

At Armin Strom, the majority of components in the movement, with the exception of the escapement and balance spring, are produced in-house. Small round components like screws, pinions and gear wheels are produced by profile-turning machines, which gradually whittle away long steel or brass rods from the side to cut teeth or axles. Larger components such as base plates and bridges are produced from brass on CNC machines, which are capable of machining along multiple axes consecutively using different tools for different operations, moving the component using robotic arms.

Tiny and delicate components, such as smaller bridges, levers and springs, are produced using wire erosion. This involves threading a wire that is not much smaller than a human hair through a tiny hole in the metal. An electrical current running through the wire reacts with a solution in which the entire working plate is dipped, thus “eroding” minuscule amounts of the metal. This allows particularly delicate operations to be carried out while maintaining the structural integrity of the metal. Armin Strom does not produce any of its components by stamping because of the stresses that this places on the metal.

Once the raw components are manufactured, they are engraved, beveled, polished and decorated with circular graining or Geneva stripes by hand before moving to the in-house electroplating department. Here, all steel and brass components are first given a gold plating before a layer of nickel is added to prevent corrosion and harden the surface. After cleaning, the parts are then dipped in other electroplating baths to give them their final color such as rhodium, ruthenium, or rose gold. It is only thanks to its mastery of electroplating techniques inside its own workshops that Armin Strom can allow customers to choose preferred colors for the coating on different components.

Only then can the individual components of the movement be passed on to the watchmaker for assembly. After setting the jewels into the base plate and bridges, the watchmaker adds the gear train and mainspring. After the escapement and balance wheel are positioned, the movement finally comes to life…only to be completely disassembled, cleaned, and dried before being re-assembled and lubricated. After several days of testing the precision, the watch is finally ready.
