417ES Moby Dick 39mm
THE CIVIL VERSION OF AN ICON

Frequently requested, finally available: with the new Moby Dick 39 mm, Hanhart presents the white-dial version of the historic 417 ES chronograph in its original size for the first time. Inspired by one of the rarest executions of the 1950s, this model stands for precise instrument aesthetics beyond military specifications – born civil, uncompromisingly functional.

The thermally blued hands, whose deep blue tone comes alive depending on the angle of light, lend the watch remarkable depth. The anti-magnetic case reliably protects the movement from external influences, while water resistance of 10 ATM makes the chronograph fully suitable for everyday use.

Instead of the classic red bezel marking, the Moby Dick 39 mm features an ivory-colored Super-LumiNova® insert. Perfectly matched to the dial numerals and hand inlays, this iconic chronograph ensures excellent legibility even in daylight.

The Watch and Its History

The designation “Moby Dick” traces back to an exceptionally rare version of the historic Hanhart 417 ES chronograph from the 1950s

While the 417 model is predominantly known with a dark dial, a small number of examples featured a white dial with blued hands. This execution deliberately departed from the instrument-style appearance common at the time, focusing instead on maximum legibility and a distinct civil aesthetic.

Due to its limited availability and distinctive design, this white-dial version gradually became a highly sought-after collector’s piece. Among collectors, the nickname “Moby Dick” emerged as a reference to the white whale from Herman Melville’s novel, symbolizing rarity and strong recognizability.

The name was never an official historical model designation, but rather a term that evolved over time within the international collectors’ community and was later consciously adopted by Hanhart.

The Hanhart 417 ES chronograph was used in various professional fields where precise time measurement was essential. Versions with light-colored dials were aimed in particular at users outside standardized military requirements, such as in civil aviation, technical professions, or medical environments.

The white-dial version thus represents a civil interpretation of the classic chronograph – factual, functional, and free from formal service regulations.

Iconic Design with State-of-the-Art Technology

In many ways, the Moby Dick 39 mm is a time machine. It combines the defining design elements of the 1950s with modern materials and contemporary manufacturing quality.

Particularly striking are the precisely executed, high-gloss polished facets that create a clear transition between the satin-finished lugs and the case flanks.

A typical Hanhart design feature is the fluted bezel, which rotates smoothly in both directions. Its ivory-colored Super-LumiNova® insert replaces the classic red marker and is perfectly color-matched to the dial and hands. The bi-compax layout, typography, and historical lettering are consistently based on the early 417 and have been faithfully re-interpreted.

Inside, behind the screw-down stainless steel case back, operates the proven hand-wound SW510 caliber in Swiss Made quality. It features hacking seconds and offers a power reserve of up to 58 hours. While historical models were limited in every-day usability, the Moby Dick 39 mm is water-resistant to 10 bar, clearly designed for modern use.

An inner soft iron core provides effective shielding of the movement against magnetic influences. As a result, the Moby Dick 39 mm achieves anti-magnetic resistance of up to 16,000 A/m, underscoring its technically functional character for daily wear.

Hanhart – 417 ES Mocha Flyback Date Edition

Hanhart 1882  417 ES Mocha Flyback Chronograph Edition 2025

With the new 417 ES Mocha Flyback Date, Hanhart presents an exclusive edition in collaboration with “Porsche Fahrer Magazin” that unites two worlds that could hardly be more different at first glance - and yet share the same DNA: a passion for precision, character and timeless design.

What began in the Black Forest with precision mechanical watchmaking finds its counterpart in the world of motorsport - where technology, performance and style merge into an emotional unity.

The 417 ES Mocha Flyback Date builds precisely this bridge between tradition and modernity, between analog perfection and lively driving culture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It combines the iconic design of the historic 417 ES, once built for pilots, with contemporary watchmaking at the highest level - a chronograph that breathes history, embodies passion and carries the future.

A statement in mocha

The dial in elegant mocha brown with white numerals has the prefect contrast for optimal readability. A smooth, shiny bezel gives the watch elegant, flowing lines.

The 42 mm stainless steel case (height: 13.3 mm) combines satin-finished and polished surfaces, protected by a high-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inside and a transparent back that reveals the finely decorated movement.

The date window at 6 o'clock is harmoniously integrated into the symmetrical dial design - functional, discreet and stylish.

Mechanics at the highest level

Inside is the hand-wound AMT5100 M movement from Sellita's Manufacture AMT department - a classic switching wheel caliber with flyback function, date, small seconds, 30-minute counter and a power reserve of 58 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The movement beats at 4 Hertz (28,800 vibrations per hour), is shockproof and is carefully regulated in the Hanhart manufactory - with an accuracy of 0 to +8 seconds per day. Robust, precise and built for enthusiasts who love mechanical perfection.

The red pusher - a symbol of history

As with other Hanhart pilot's chronographs, the 417 ES Mocha Flyback Date is also equipped with the distinctive red pusher - a trademark with deep meaning. Legend has it that a pilot's mistress once painted the chronograph pusher red so that he would always remember her on a mission and return safely.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Historically, however, the red color served a practical purpose: it was intended to protect pilots from accidentally resetting the stop time - particularly important for watches with a flyback function, which enables the time to be restarted with just one press.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Today, the red HyCeram® pusher stands for Hanhart's combination of tradition, safety and iconic style - a detail with soul.

Comfort, function and style on the wrist

The watch is available with either a dark brown calfskin strap with Alcantara on the inside or a stainless-steel bracelet.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The leather strap has a historic lower band that is reminiscent of the pilot's watches of the 1960s and 70s. Originally, however, this lower band was not just for stylistic reasons: In the early days of pilot's chronographs, many cases were made of copper or brass alloys, which could cause irritation if they came into contact with the skin.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The lower band protected the wrist from this direct contact - a functional solution that lives on today as an aesthetic detail with history. Thanks to the quick-change system on the bars, the lower strap can now be removed in seconds - for maximum flexibility between a classic vintage look and modern simplicity.

THE GERMAN VIRTUE OF PUNCTUALITY

The Hanhart standard with regard to the accuracy of the watches is as unique as the watches themselves.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each individual movement is tested and adjusted by excellently trained watchmakers at the Hanhart manufactory in Gütenbach. The Hanhart specifications for rate accuracy are 0 to +8 seconds per day on average over 6 positions.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This corresponds to the same deviation as +-4 seconds, but Hanhart does not allow a minus second in the main positions.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The German virtue of punctuality dictates that wearers of Hanhart watches should not be late because of the timekeeping device on their wrist. In addition, a maximum delta of 10 seconds is permitted between the positions.

With the new AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade, Hanhart is once again expanding its Aquasphere collection, which is geared towards professional diving watches. The new model combines a special design with proven functionality. The dial shows a gentle color gradient from bright blue to deep black a tribute to the depths of the ocean and at the same time a guarantee for optimum readability, even underwater.

Another new feature is the blue and black rubber strap, which not only perfectly complements the AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade, but is also compatible with the AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade Blue. This versatility offers divers even more flexibility and comfort. Another new feature is the optional black or blue bezel, which rounds off the design harmoniousl y and provides functional support.

As with all Hanhart watches, the AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade focuses on maximum functionality, intuitive operation, exceptional precision and outstanding robustness both above and below water.

PROVEN WATCH IN A NEW COLOR

Following the successful launch of the first watch in the Aquasphere collection, Hanhart now presents the AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade with a new, impressive black blue gradient dial that reflects the depth of the ocean. Despite the new design, the 30 bar water resistance, the exceptional robustness and the high quality embossing on the case back remain unchanged. The rotating bezel of the AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade is available in either blue or black and can be safely turned counterclockwise, as is customary with professional diving watches.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial of the AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade with its fascinating black blue gradient not only reflects the visual depth of the ocean, but also the intense experience of an extreme diver. The gentle transition from deep black to blue is reminiscent of the dark depths of the sea, which are increasingly broken by a clear blue light during a dive. For freedivers like Fabio Tunno (pictured right), the gradient from black to blue is more than just a design element it symbolizes the decisive moment between deep darkness and the saving light of the ascent.

Just like the color gradient on the dial, an extreme diver feels moved at this moment from the oppressive silence of the sea to a new breath of freedom and life.

NEW VERSATILITY ON THE WRIST -
THE NEW RUBBER STRAP

With the introduction of a new rubber strap, Hanhart is expanding the wearing options of the AQUASPHERE collection with a particularly functional and stylish option. The robust strap has been specially developed for use in water and impresses with its high resistance and ease of care ideal for daily use as well as for demanding dives. With a high quality stainless steel folding clasp, even putting on and taking off the watch becomes a small pleasure.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The modern Hanhart logo is discreetly embossed into the rubber strap and echoes the design of the dial. From now on, both the new AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade and the tried and tested Aquasphere FreeFall Blue can be worn with the new rubber strap in black or blue, the sporty Hook Strap™ or a classic steel bracelet.
