GARRICK –S2 Deadbeat Seconds Edition

GARRICKS2 Deadbeat Seconds 42mm Limited Edition 2024

True to Garrick’s mandate of elevating homegrown British watchmaking, the Norwich-based artisan brand is now introducing one of the most esoteric of complications in the Garrick S2 Deadbeat Seconds. The new Garrick S2 deadbeat seconds is the latest timepiece to leave the confines of our workshop. The watch is handcrafted in-house by Master Watchmaker Stuart Smith. Each component stands testament to Smith’s unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Previously, all of Garrick’s movements have incorporated a small seconds indication. However, for the first time, with the advent of the Calibre DB-GO6, the brand unveils its latest model endowed with a deadbeat seconds display, the aptly named Garrick S2 Deadbeat Seconds.

The Deadbeat seconds is one of the most unusual complications in haute horology. Generally, the easiest way to tell if a timepiece is mechanical or quartz is whether the hand sweeps or ticks. Sweeping traditionally means mechanical, ticking means quartz.

The dead-beat flips that on its head in gloriously idiosyncratic style by lavishing countless hours of mechanical ingenuity to allow it to stop between seconds. Thanks to the large Garrick Trinity free-sprung balance wheel at 6 o’clock however, there’s no mistaking the S2 Deadbeat for anything but mechanical.

This new complication is possible via the Calibre DB-GO6 calibre, a movement built in-house, painstakingly finished by watchmaker Stuart Smith

Each movement is built from the ground-up – no adapting pre-assembled movements here – finished with frosted gold, black gold or rhodium plated bridges with mirror polished, engraved or hand bevelled cocks. Only then is it placed in the timelessly handsome S2 case.

This watch is housed in a 42mm 904L stainless steel case, made within the confines of the company’s Norwich workshop. The case exhibits a brilliant gleam, courtesy of a linishing machine and expert polishing. A fluted onion crown adds a flurry of style and proves simple to manipulate. Garrick also offers an 18-carat gold case option for those prospective clients seeking the ultimate expression of luxury.

Two versions of the dial are available – the original S2 MK1 with applied heat blued skeleton chapter ring and the MK2 which features a thin circular grained chapter ring with infilled markers.

Both versions are available with frosted or engine turned finishes.

The engine-turned dial, sometimes termed 'guilloché', is an exemplar of hand craftsmanship and is produced entirely in-house on one of Garrick’s historic rose and straight-line engines.

It is available in a choice of rhodium or gold plate finishes. In the case of the rhodium dial, it is treated on three separate occasions in order to achieve an attractive shade of dark grey. Alternatively, would-be wearers can choose from different dial motifs and colours, sating any personal preferences.

Clients can choose from polished, brushed or thermally blued steel lancine or anchor hands, again made in-house, featuring faceted edges, augmenting readability.

It takes around five days to build and finish the dial of the Garrick S2 Deadbeat Seconds.

A chapter ring, framing the centrally positioned, engine-turned motif, sits on a higher level and is adorned with a circular-grained pattern. The hours are denoted with thermally blued Roman numerals, while a chemin de fer facilitates the read-off of minutes and seconds. The lancine hands, again made in-house, feature faceted edges, augmenting readability. Clients can choose from polished, brushed or thermally blued steel hands.

It takes around five days to build and finish the dial of the Garrick S2 Central Seconds. However, it is the company’s belief that haste seldom yields greatness.

Upholding the design language of the company’s popular Portsmouth model, the dial includes a large aperture at 6 o’clock. This opening grants views of the balance wheel oscillating to and fro. The mainplate can be specified in frosted gold plate or rhodium plate with perlage decoration.

The Calibre UT-GO6 can be viewed via the exhibition caseback. The rim of the balance wheel is made of a patented anti-magnetic alloy called Sircumet. The rate of the movement is altered by adjusting the timing screws on the balance. These screws are set inboard, mitigating air turbulence and, in so doing, augmenting precision.

Whether its the engine-turned dial, the applied chapter ring with thermally blued numerals, the in-house hands or the elevated movement finishing, with this British watch, peerless craftsmanship abounds. The S2 Central Seconds represents the pinnacle of Garrick ownership and confers a degree of exclusivity seldom found with mass-produced watches.

GARRICK – S4 Timepiece 42mm Edition

GARRICKS4 Timepiece 42mm Limited Edition 2021

The Garrick S4 is the latest creation from the British firm. It encompasses much hand-craftsmanship, manifest with its elaborate dial and yet, despite its impressive in-house content and high-quotient of hand-craftsmanship, it remains surprisingly affordable.

For most people, mass-produced products are a default choice, purchased through necessity rather than unbridled desire. The ultimate expression of luxury is a ‘hand-crafted’ object made with time-served hands, free of concessions. Since its inception, Garrick has always tried to make many of its watch components in-house and by hand. Moreover, it has shunned cheap imports, even when this would reduce costs.

In recent years, Garrick has shown its in-house watchmaking expertise again and again, releasing several refined timepieces. Some of these models are equipped with the firm’s exclusive movements, feature skeleton or guilloché dials and all are enriched with high-end finishing.

However, the British firm recognises that many individuals yearn for a watch, infused with hand-craftsmanship, but offered at an affordable price. The Garrick S4, the company’s new entry-level watch, features a sumptuous dial that employs an elaborate and highly innovative construction technique.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Whereas the mass-produced approach is to stamp a dial blank from a ribbon of brass, Garrick uses a lathe to create a brass disc. Two feet are riveted to the underside of the dial blank which ultimately unite the dial with the movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial blank is ‘flattened’ using fine abrasive paper in order to remove any burrs or imperfections, creating a smooth surface. Thereafter, the dial is bead blasted. A chapter ring, effectively a circlet of metal, is paired with a smaller ring for the small seconds. These are then drilled, creating holes to facilitate fixing.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The chapter ring is clamped between two plates and baked at 300°C. This hardens the metal and removes any springiness. After the chapter ring has cooled, it is ‘spun’ on a lathe, creating a motif termed ‘satiné circulaire’. Furthermore, the hour track and minute track are delineated from one another with an engraved pattern called ‘sauté piqué.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Laser engraving is used to impart Roman numerals to the chapter ring. The resultant recesses are then inked by hand using a special syringe pen. Once the ink has dried, the chapter ring is cleaned and spun again to remove any excess ink.

Upholding fine watchmaking practise, the Maritime hour and minute hands are heat-blued and the collet sat atop these hands is hand-polished to a brilliant conclusion.

The central area of the dial is frosted, while the small seconds display is suffused with an intricate hand-guilloché motif, executed on a traditional rose-engine lathe. Alternatively, the central dial area can be specified with a contrasting guilloché pattern.

The British-made case, measuring 42mm in diameter, is made from 904L stainless. This particular grade of steel provides superior scratch resistance to the ubiquitous 316L grade as well as exhibiting a notably brilliant gleam. Alternatively, the Garrick S4 can be specified with an 18-carat gold case.

At the heart of the Garrick S4 is a modified hand-wound ETA movement. It is rhodium-plated, features an engraved barrel and crown wheel cover.

Inspired by old English pocket watches, the frosted movement is equipped with a three-quarter plate and also includes a screwed balance. After the movement is tested, it is regulated, delivering a daily variance of +3 seconds.

The watch is available with a choice of straps, including handmade alligator, calf leather or ostrich.

While most hand-crafted items are prohibitively expensive, the Garrick S4 proves the exception, costing from £4.995 including VAT. The British brand has endeavoured to mitigate costs without compromising on quality, employing ingenious techniques without diminishing the kudos of Garrick’s costlier timepieces.

GARRICK – S3 Limited Edition

GARRICKS3 Timepiece 42mm Limited Edition

Following the success of the S1 and S2 models, Garrick continues its ascent ever upwards into the rarefied world of high horology, releasing its latest timepiece, the Garrick S3. This new watch showcases the British brand’s vast expertise and penchant for hand craftsmanship.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The S3 features an openworked dial revealing a myriad of components usually hidden from view. Moreover, the new movement, the UT-GO4 calibre, encompasses chatons and peerless finishing, including time-consuming black polishing.

When Garrick unveiled its S1 model in 2018, it announced to the watch collecting community that the British brand was capable of producing fine watches, rich in technical virtue and hand craftsmanship.

Building on the success of previous models, Garrick has now created the S3, the company’s most technical watch to date.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The S1 model featured an openworked dial which exposed a series of gears and pinions, positioned atop the mainplate. The S3 is different. The S3’s mainplate is a new design featuring a number of recesses which accommodate the aforementioned parts. These parts sit flush with the upper mainplate surfaces, providing a neater appearance. This specification detail meant Garrick’s watchmakers had to revisit each movement component and, in many cases, relocate parts in order to ensure functionality and augment the model’s aesthetic allure. Ultimately, these various changes led to the creation of the new UT-GO4 calibre.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Consistent with previous models, the S3 features Garrick’s Maritime hour and minute hands, crafted in-house and heat blued. The hour track incorporates Roman numerals and, once again, is made in-house and thermally blued. A small seconds display and power-reserve indicator complete the inventory of functions. As per the S1, clients can select a discreet nameplate or choose to eschew dialside branding.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The balance is positioned front of house, in the lower portion of the dial. A prominent bridge spans the balance wheel and is enriched with straight graining and black polishing. The movement is endowed with a Trinity free-sprung balance made of Sircumet, a non-magnetic alloy exclusive to Garrick. A free-sprung balance enhances isochronism and mitigates positional influence on the rate, surpassing the ubiquitous index-adjusted balance. The timing screws affixed to the balance wheel are set in-board, reducing air turbulence and, by default, augmenting precision.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The gears and a plethora of other components are made in-house using traditional watchmaking machines such as jig borers and lathes. Numerous grey-toned parts are, once again, made of Sircumet and subject to black polishing. This latter type of finish necessitates polishing parts on a tin plate in conjunction with diamantine paste, flattening the surface and delivering a brilliant, mirror-like appearance. The rhodium-plated movement is hand-frosted and features chatons, while the case is offered in stainless steel or 18-carat gold.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

By virtue of its exalted, no-compromise creation, the making of the Garrick S3 is restricted to just five pieces per annum. This latest watch, crafted by hand in Norfolk, showcases the talents of Garrick’s skilled staff and demonstrates that British watchmaking is very much alive and well.
