While the FB 1 and FB 2 collections followed in the footsteps of Ferdinand Berthoud's marine chronometers thanks to constant-force mechanisms, the FB 3 collection explores accuracy from a new angle: that of the cylindrical balance-spring. Particularly appreciated for its stability, this type of hairspring was favoured by the master watchmaker and his nephew Louis Berthoud in their precision timepieces.

"This is how the idea of the Chronomètre FB 3SPC came about. We wanted to integrate this type of balance-spring into a wristwatch, while retaining its original purpose that was to guarantee accuracy”, explains Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, President of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. "We are particularly delighted to have been able to rise to the challenge and to see that the collection remains a great success among collectors, as confirmed by the latest award at the GPHG.”

FERDINAND BERTHOUD – Chronometre FB 3 Only Watch 2023 Unique Piece

FERDINAND BERTHOUDCHRONOMÉTRIE FB 3 Only Watch 2023 Unique Piece

 HRONOMÈTRE FB 3ONLY WATCH

For its second participation in Only Watch, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is offering a new version of the FB3 collection: a one-of-a-kind model presented in a patinated bronze case, a tribute to the ‘Master Watchmaker’ title granted to Ferdinand Berthoud just 270 years ago.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The five one-of - a - kind models in the FB 1R Regulator collection unveiled in 2018 generated considerable enthusiasm at the time of their launch. Their bronze cases featured five different patinas, as if they had just emerged after a long stay in the underwater depths – a tribute to the world of onboard marine chronometers once developed by Ferdinand Berthoud himself.

Since then, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud has unveiled new movements, the latest of which powers the FB 3 collection. The conditions were therefore ripe for the creation of a model that would unite these latest developments: a one-of - a - kind timepiece in patinated bronze, driven by a balance with a cylindrical balance-spring chronometer-certified by the COSC. Thus emerged the idea of the Chronomètre FB 3 "Only Watch", which will be put up for bidding at the eponymous auction to be held in Geneva on 5 November.

One-of-a-kind anniversary model

Several months of preparation and testing were necessary to achieve the patinated bronze case of the Chronomètre FB 3 Only Watch. The colour and nuances are unprecedented and evoke to the discerning gaze the patina that naturally develops on the copper alloys of the precision and navigation instruments supplied by Ferdinand Berthoud during the 18 t h century.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This patina symbolises the passage of time and celebrates an anniversary: in 1753, exactly 270 years ago, Ferdinand Berthoud received the ‘Master Watchmaker’ title, at the age of just 26. This one- of - a - kind anniversary watch will be of fered at the tenth edition of Only Watch. This is a rare opportunity, as the current capacities of the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud workshops only allow for the production of around 30 timepieces in this collection per year.

Beating inside the FB 3 "Only Watch" model is the world’s only calibre with a cylindrical balance- spring of ficially chronometer- certified by the COSC, a clear tribute to the quest for precision initiated by Ferdinand Berthoud. Many months of research, testing and fine-tuning were necessary to define the number of coils and the geometry of the terminal curve at the attachment points.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This new mechanical hand - wound movement stems from more than three years of research and development. Appearing at 9 o'clock, the three main escapement organs – the balance-wheel, pallet - lever and escape-wheel – are thus individualised, distinct and prominent.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This ample space dedicated to the regulating organ enables its operation to be admired in full, and the cylindrical balance- spring to be seen beating throughout the three-day power reserve, including through a large por thole created in the case middle at 9 o'clock.

Colour filiation

The finishing associated with the FB 3 "Only Watch" model (ref . FB 3SPC. 5) is tailored to reflect the colour codes of the 2023 edition of this charity auction. More than 100 hours of work were required to decorate the movement, which features 3N yellow gilded components. The blue colour is picked up on the gold hands with CVD treatment.

Pink hues are found on the jewels visible on the dial side. Two straps will be delivered with this one- of - a - kind model: an aged calf leather strap recalling the patina of the case; and a dark green alligator strap in harmony with the Only Watch 2023 colour char t. The caseback features a special "ONLY WATCH PIECE UNIQUE" engraving, recalling the exceptional character of this creation.

FERDINAND BERTHOUD – Chronometrie FB 3SPC Gold Edition

FERDINAND BERTHOUDCHRONOMÉTRIE FB 3SPC Gold Edition 2022

 THE NEW CHRONOMèTRE FB 3SPC:
when curves consort with chronometry

Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud unveils the third pillar of its collections: the new Chronomètre FB 3SPC. Powered by a mechanical movement featuring a novel construction and a cylindrical balance-spring, this timepiece approaches the core theme of precision from a new angle. It took two years to perfect the adjustments of the regulating organ before obtaining official "chronometer" certification (ISO 3159 standard): a first for such a movement. This new FB 3 collection draws its stylistic, technical and aesthetic inspiration from a rare and exceptional creation: the No. 26 decimal watch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Originating from the workshop founded by Ferdinand Berthoud in Paris after being awarded his “maîtrise” (master of horology title) in 1753, this creation is signed by his nephew, Louis Berthoud. It is the symbol of a revival in this post-revolutionary period, during which marine chronometers – measuring instruments intended for naval use in the 18th century – paved the way for watchmaking of very high quality, pare-down and firmly rooted in the 19th century and its civil applications. The Chronomètre FB 3SPC reflects this historical and horological transition.

Chronometric filiation: a cylindrical balance-spring chronometer-certified by the COSC

Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is launching a third collection of wristwatches in the wake of those created since 2015: the new Chronomètre FB 3SPC. The spirit of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is based on the quest for reliability and precision through unprecedented horological creations, and the new FB 3 collection is no exception to this rule.

The Chronomètre FB 3SPC thus explores another chronometric issue, which was the subject of the most abundant and fruitful research during the 18th century golden age of watchmaking: the balance-spring. These experiments were however poorly documented and it was thus in the total absence of specialised literature that Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud set about creating the new Calibre FB-SPC.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This new mechanical movement is based on a cylindrical balance-spring, a rare watchmaking speciality on which Ferdinand Berthoud himself worked. His nephew, Louis Berthoud, favoured its use in his famous No. 26 decimal watch. Calibre FB-SPC is the only one of its kind to satisfy the chronometric (precision timekeeping) criteria of the COSC: ISO 3159 certification made possible only by the precision adjustments performed by the Manufacture's watchmakers.

In addition to the development of a new variable-inertia balance-spring, equipped with four fine adjustment screws and 12 load screws, many months of research, testing and fine-tuning were necessary to define the number of coils and the geometry of the terminal curve at the attachment points in order to optimise rate precision.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This new mechanical hand-wound movement stems from more than three years of research and development, during which every detail was carefully examined. Appearing at 9 o'clock, the three main escapement organs – the balance-wheel, pallet-lever and escape-wheel – are thus individualised, distinct and prominent. This ample space dedicated to the regulating organ enables its operation to be admired in full, and the cylindrical balance-spring to be seen beating throughout the three-day power reserve, including through a large water-resistant porthole created in the case middle at 9 o'clock.

Stylistic filiation: a design inspired by pocket watches

While the FB 1 and FB 2 collections belong to the legacy of Ferdinand Berthoud's marine chronometers, the FB 3 collection borrows from the style of the Master's nephew, student and successor: Pierre-Louis Berthoud (1754-1813) known as "Louis Berthoud". Born in 1754 in Couvet, in the Val-de-Travers, the latter moved to Paris at his uncle’s request. In 1784, having skilfully assisted in the making and improving of his distinguished relative’s marine chronometers, he was entrusted by Ferdinand Berthoud with the responsibility of his workshop, located since 1754 on Rue de Harlay, running along the Place Dauphine in Paris.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Under his impetus, private watchmaking experienced considerable expansion. Louis Berthoud added his personal touch, which can be seen in the aesthetics of the mechanism. He inaugurated a style that was rooted in the highly functional appearance of marine chronometers, where function dictated form. He developed these pragmatic designs at a time when the spirit of the age was shifting from the baroque and opulent style of the monarchy to neo-classicism during the early days of the Republic and subsequently the Empire. Thanks to his exceptional talent, Louis Berthoud made the workshop's activity bear fruit by naturally accompanying the societal and stylistic changes of his time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This inspiration is evident at first glance in the FB3 collection. Its new round case, available in 18-carat white or rose gold, recalls the curves of pocket watches from the early 19th century, such as the decimal watch No. 26, made in 1793 by Louis Berthoud and now on display within the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud heritage collection in Fleurier.

A single line hugs the curves of the domed crystal and the slender polished bezel of the FB 3 models, while harmoniously extending along the strap and the lugs screwed to the case. This refined and coherent ensemble echoes the slimness of the case (42 mm in diameter and 9.43 mm thick), which fades into the background so as to make way for the spectacular movement.

Aesthetic affiliation: architecture designed to highlight every detail

The other deep-seated characteristic of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud lies in the desire to create movements with a legible, graphic and three-dimensional architecture. The mainplate is placed at the heart of Calibre FB-SPC and the components are assembled on either side of it.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the dial side, a close-knit array of six bridges traces curves and lines directly inspired by the work of Louis Berthoud. They are echoed on the back by ten other bridges forming an intimately juxtaposed mosaic.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The indication of time is pared down to the absolute minimum: a peripheral inner bezel ring for the hours and minutes, and small seconds at 6 o'clock. At 2 o'clock, the power-reserve indicator is engraved in a sector graduated in 12-hour segments from "0" to "1". The rest of the dial, deliberately left open, enables one to admire the aesthetics of the movement's components, their arrangement, as well as the surface conditions alternating between chamfered and polished bevels and matt surfaces created by fine sandblasting.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The architecture of the movement is minimalist in appearance, yet no less complex. The hours and minutes flange, shaped like an amphitheatre, extends vertically to the mainplate. The openworked and suspended seconds disc is secured from below to a dedicated bridge. The balance-bridge, with its distinctive screw-in heel shape, is a historical reference to Ferdinand Berthoud's No. 3 astronomical watch. Positioned at 12 o’clock, the barrel bridge spanning a wide 120° angle recalls a bridge on the No. 2575 quarter-repeater watch made by Louis Berthoud.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

More than 100 hours are required to decorate the 230 components of the movement in order to achieve the ultimate degree of perfection characterising the creations bearing the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud signature.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Chronomètre FB 3SPC is available in two versions. The first features an 18-carat white gold case, 2N pale yellow gold movement components and an eggshell-coloured dial in sandblasted silver-toned brass. The second is equipped with an 18-carat 5N rose gold case framing a black-varnished minutes track with black-rhodium treated visible movement components. Their facetted, skeletonised and open-tipped 18-carat gold hands are inspired by a 1785 Ferdinand Berthoud astronomical regulator belonging to the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud heritage collection in Fleurier.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The gold used in the production of Chronomètre FB 3SPC models stems from the ethical sourcing process instated by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele – President and Founder of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud – at Chopard, of which he is also Co-President.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Chronomètre FB 3SPC thus perpetuates one of the most emblematic stylistic elements of Louis Berthoud's era, the post-revolutionary years of the early 19th century, when the pocket watch entered a new technical age. The Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud collection thus gains a new territory of expression, still rooted in historical chronometry, while its degree of finishing and its level of quality remain unchanged. Production of the Chronomètre FB 3SPC is naturally limited by the capacities of the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud workshop in Fleurier to a maximum 25 of these timepieces per year.

FERDINAND BERTHOUD – Horloge Marine Clock N°14 Heritage

FERDINAND BERTHOUDCHRONOMÉTRIE Horloge Marine Clock 14 Heritage 1775 Limited Edition

 A CUSTODIAN OF ACCURACY
ON SHOW AT
WATCHES AND WONDERS

It is not a watch; it is not a new model. You won't be able to talk to its creator, and you won't be able to wear it or even touch it. You will probably only see it once in your life. Discover this technical and horological masterpiece during Watches and Wonders Geneva.

Ferdinand Berthoud made only 21 weight-driven marine clocks during his lifetime. To date, 11 of them have been located in private collections or museums; the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris alone has six examples. Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is proud to announce that one of these 11 creations will be joining the L.U.CEUM collection in Fleurier.

A unique occasion to admire a pioneering precision timekeeping object

This measuring instrument is one of those that enabled navigation on the high seas and the discovery of new lands: only a Marine Clock allowed sailors to calculate longitudes and thus to keep a fixed course for several months. Entirely crafted using manual tools, it offered the ultimate level of accuracy for the time, gaining or losing just one second per week – an exceptional result that could still challenge the finest contemporary chronometers.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is interesting to note that the object has not acquired its value in recent times due to itsvenerableage, but was instead already valuable 250 years ago. It was the most important onboard instrument, placed in the Captain’s cabin and under his direct responsibility. The “Longitude” Marine Clocks" always went in pairs. This principle of redundancy when it comes to critical navigation instruments is still the rule nowadays for both maritime and airborne navigation.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is this extremely rare witness of a decisive early period in the history of horology that the Maison has decided to exhibit – accompanied by countless precautions– at Watches & Wonders Geneva. This clock bears number 14 and was made in 1775. It represents all the fundamentals that are the bedrock of contemporary watchmaking, and particularly of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud.

Original inspiration

Ferdinand Berthoud designed several systems intended to guarantee the highest precision of his Marine Clocks. This enabled him to lay the groundwork for the longitude calculations on which transoceanic navigation depended – and hence for the expansion of the great 18th century European powers including the Spanish Navy, which purchased this No. 14 clock as part of a global order for eight chronometers built by Ferdinand Berthoud and delivered between 1775 and 1776.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Among these systems was a constant force mechanism. The objective was to ensure the most regular possible distribution of the escapement’s driving torque. This device is still used today and equips all timepieces by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud.

The second fundamental process in contemporary watchmaking is a pivoted detent escapement. Stable, energy-efficient and regular in its operation, the detent  escapement is considered the first free-sprung escapement. Within this construction, the impulse comes from the escape-wheel – which is why Ferdinand Berthoud designed it to be oversized (58.4 mm in diameter) in order to ensure perfect precision as a larger escape-wheel offers greater inertia and thus enhanced precision.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally, Marine Clock No. 14 features a grid, the first true metallic mechanism compensating for the thermal variations that caused the metals in the movement to expand. Today, modern alloys pursue exactly the same goal. Their use was not possible three centuries ago, yet Ferdinand Berthoud had already understood the importance of thermal variations and the need to compensate for them.

Continuity of a heritage

Restoration work on Marine Clock No. 14 called for no less than 400 hours. This timepiece has been entirely restored to its original functional state, while retaining the patina associated with its age.
It still reflects the technical choices made by Ferdinand Berthoud, which continue to govern the development of the Maisonbearing his name today. The constant force escapement was used right from the start with the FB 1.1

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The vertical pillar-based construction of the clock – within a structure offering a view of the movement– has shaped the cases of all contemporary creations signed Ferdinand Berthoud. Finally, the eponymous Chronométrie scrupulously insists on the repairability of its timepieces, just as Ferdinand Berthoud was already doing in 1775. A successful approach indeed, since his Marine Clock No. 14 was once again set into operation without any major difficulty, 246 years after its creation.

Passing on the baton

This exceptional piece sums up the philosophy that guides Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, President of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud: A passion for watchmaking history; unwavering loyalty to the founding spirit of Ferdinand Berthoud; the judicious, patient and meticulous construction of the one and only museum that bears his name; the collection composed exclusively of authentic timepieces that have been restored to perfect working order; and finally, the transposition of this set of values into contemporary collections sharing the great watchmaker’s sense of innovation and experimentation, in order to reach new heights of timekeeping precision. It is with this requirement in mind that only a few dozen timepieces leave the workshops of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud each year.
