Bvlgari introduces the Gérald Genta Arena Bi-Retrograde Sport. The newest Gérald Genta model pays homage to Gérald Genta, a man who is regarded by many as the most notable watch designer of the 20th century, bringing one of his brand’s signatures back to life. Housed in the famous chunky, round Arena case – truly representative of Gérald Genta revolutionary  spirit – the timepiece features a smooth, wide, curved bezel in brushed titanium.

The 2020 edition enriches and pursues a long story. The last episode took place in 2019 with the release of the 50th Anniversary model👆, with an Arena bi-retro watch featuring a platinum bezel and case, blue dial and blue strap. Based on an iconic 1969 design, it bears a reimagined Gérald Genta logo, and is conceived of as a tribute to the brilliance of the man and the significance of his brand to the success of Bvlgari’s watchmaking. This introduction marked the return of Gérald Genta. Now, Bvlgari launches a new model for 2020, with additional models in the works for upcoming releases.

This new 2020 Gérald Genta Arena timepiece features jumping hours which are displayed through a window at 12 o’clock, while the minutes are tracked on an arc spanning the top half of the black anthracite dial, across which the minute hand travels and snaps back to zero every 60 minutes. Likewise, for the date, which is set in a smaller arc at 6 o’clock.

Powered by the BVL 300 caliber with a bidirectional self-winding movement boasting a 42-hour power reserve, the complex mechanism is visible through the scratch resistant sapphire case back. It comes on a matte black alligator strap with a titanium ardillon buckle.

In 1969, the designer and watchmaking genius Gérald Genta launched his eponymous brand and was quickly recognized for creating some of the most striking and iconic timepieces in modern history. His range was considerable: not only did he introduce genre-defining sporty chic models and Grand Complication timepieces, but he also introduced new ways to read time with his retrograde and bi-retrograde movements.

In 1996, he was indeed the first to combine jumping hours and retrograde minutes on a wristwatch. To do this is no small feat; it is a rare, complex and exacting mechanism that represents a triumph of precision and expertise.

A signature of the brand, the original Arena watch was the first retrograde watch on the market, and its signature chunky case has long been a touchstone of the designer’s exceptional savoir-faire. It featured an architectural shape inspired by the structure of the ancient “arenas”. In ancient times, “arenas” were used to host gladiatorial shows as well as a variety of other events. The shows, called Ludi, were staging fights with Gladiators and exotic animals. They were demonstrations of power and family prestige, and were immensely popular.

The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Edition “Le Petit Prince” Story

The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Edition “Le Petit Prince” features a stainless steel case, a midnight-blue dial, a rotating bezel made of blue ceramic as well as white numerals and hands. The patented timezoner function is an excellent example of IWC engineering: the complication is ingenious, robustly built, and easy to use.

The design is inspired by the puristic instrument design of the Mark 11. The iconic navigation watch was produced in Schaffhausen for the Royal Air Force from 1948 and was worn by many of the pilots and navigators serving at that time.​

It allows the user to effortlessly change between different timezones by simply pressing and turning the bezel to the desired location. The mechanism works without stopping the movement, thus not losing a single second in the process, even across the dateline.

The 24-hour display takes the form of a rotating disc below the dial, which significantly enhances its legibility.

The IWC-manufactured 82760 calibre movement powers the timezoner function. The decoration IWC, with circular graining and circular Geneva stripes, as well as an 18k gold medallion on the rotor depicting Saint-Exupery’s character.

Used in aviation for all communication and navigation purposes, the UTC function makes it easy to set a second time zone. When turning the crown when in its central position, the hour hand moves forward or backward in hourly increments.

If the dial crosses the International Date Line, the date display changes automatically. The time in the wearer's home country can be read via the curved UTC display in the top half of the dial. The 82710 IWC-manufactured calibre has a Pellaton winding with ceramic components and boasts a power reserve of 60 hours.

Orange sapphire, a world first

 

If there's one area where Hublot's own "Art of Fusion" is expressed in all its boldness and radiance, it's definitely that of cutting-edge materials, particularly manufactured sapphire. Over the years, the brand (which has its own Metallurgy & Materials laboratory) has already released numerous very illustrious watches where the sapphire cases and dials, available in novel colours, act as transparent settings for sophisticated mechanics – such as the Big Bang Unico Sapphire (transparent), All Black Sapphire, Big Bang Unico Red Sapphire and Blue Sapphire, and the recent Spirit of Big Bang Yellow Sapphire.

Today, Hublot continues to innovate with this extraordinary material by reinterpreting the Big Bang Sapphire Tourbillon in an entirely new orange shade – a world first for a through-tinted sapphire – achieved thanks to the incorporation of titanium and chromium in a skilful manufacturing process. This surprising and dynamic colour is a breath of fresh air for haute horlogerie, and is in perfect harmony with Hublot's culture of excellence. The fascination of the translucent bezel and case in finely polished orange sapphire is enhanced by the technical tone of the six H-shape titanium screws that characterise the iconic Big Bang design.

An entirely new self-winding tourbillon calibre

 

A revolutionary case with an innovative movement. Hublot illustrates its unrivalled watchmaking expertise – and its mastery of the tourbillon, which has been constantly developed since 2007 – by accommodating an entirely new tourbillon movement at the heart of the orange sapphire, completely designed and produced by the brand. Unlike traditional tourbillon movements, equipped with manual winding, this exceptional calibre makes a name for itself thanks to its self-winding system ensuring a minimum power reserve of three days (72 hours) – a very noticeable improvement for the wearer. It is equipped with ceramic ball bearings and the latest Hublot technical advances in its winding system.

The manufacture has also reasserted its uniqueness by reconstructing the movement in its entirety in order to make the micro-rotor visible from the dial side. This innovative layout not only represents an additional technical challenge for the designers, but also breathes new life in aesthetic terms, by strengthening the spectacular appearance of the dial and its very contemporary design. The perpetual movements of the micro-rotor set at 12 o'clock echo the rotation of the tourbillon, its regulating organ, positioned in perfect symmetry at 6 o'clock. The grey 22-carat gold micro-rotor is set off by exquisite decoration (bevelling, sunray-brushing and sand-blasting), as well as by signature Hublot openwork in the precious metal.

Hublot has also continued in its quest for transparency by using more sapphire in the movement itself. The manufacture calibre on the Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic Orange Sapphire is equipped for the first time with three sapphire bridges – a barrel bridge, an automatic bridge and a tourbillon barrette. The lightweight effect of the skeleton work is accentuated by heavily open-worked and sandblasted platinum. The tourbillon cage at six o'clock, revolving on its axis every minute to compensate for the pull of the earth on the movement's direction, is distinctive for its pure geometry affording a glimpse into the mechanical heart of the model. The legibility of the open dial is enhanced by hands and indices with a luminescent coating. The transparent orangerubber strap with a lined relief – with a patented express One Click interchangeability system and titanium deployant buckle – completes the cutting-edge look of this limited edition release of 50 pieces.

Hublot stands out thanks to its complete mastery of the industrialisation of the sapphire, enabling it to produce series of several hundreds of watches – and not just a few special pieces. The main challenge involves obtaining a material with a uniform colour, without impurities, without bubbles, without cracks, the manufacture of which can be repeated in an identical fashion qualitatively and aesthetically. A complex and costly process. The extreme hardness of the sapphire also requires specific machining methods.

The year of the Metal Buffalo has been the inspiration behind a scintillating production of the Perpetual Moon. Arnold & Son dreamed up a powerful animal, an immense moon, refined production drawing on the Manufacture’s know-how, and the variety of motifs offered by the mineral kingdom. Yellow gold and specular haematite dominate by day, and at night the scene lights up.

In honour of the traditional Chinese zodiacal calendar’s new year, Arnold & Son has produced an eight-piece limited series of its high-precision moon-phases model decorated with a buffalo.

The year of the Metal Buffalo begins on 12 February 2021 and symbolises appeasement, dialogue and soil fertility. It is thus a powerful and docile animal that is represented on the dial of the Perpetual Moon “Year of the Ox”.

Immensity

Arnold & Son have installed their large moon in the night-sky that forms the dial of this exceptional time-piece. In a large aperture, a disc turns to show us the age of the heavenly body, the appearance of its crescent and its light. This moon is crafted in mother-of-pearl, its shadows are hand-painted and it is coated with Super-LumiNova.

In the daylight, it is almost white. In the dark, it lights up from within and takes on a new aspect, with details emerging. Further along on this disc, the constellation has been created using the same methods.

After obsidian and aventurine quartz, it is specular haematite that has been selected for making the dial of this Perpetual Moon. This variety of haematite is in laminated form, with layers that are naturally smooth and shiny.

As with all haematites, due to its iron composition there are silvery flakes in its totally black mass. These glittering specks have also been incorporated into the double-faced alligator-skin strap, the outer face of which is black, flake-speckled and embellished with stitching in veritable platinum (Pt950) thread.

Horns

But the unique and exclusive signature of this limited series is the buffalo with immense horns standing, imposingly, at 6 o’clock. It is a miniature gold sculpture featuring the animal in a majestic posture. In the background is a scenery of multi-storey pagodas, hand-painted with gold powder.

Their windows have also been painted with Super-LumiNova. Thus at night-time, these temples are lit up from the interior and the Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon takes on an inhabited aspect.

Accuracy

Like all the movements used by Arnold & Son, the calibre A&S1512 was entirely developed, produced, assembled, decorated, adjusted and cased up in the brand’s Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This calibre is based on a large barrel with an oscillation frequency of 3 Hz, giving a 90-hour power reserve.

Last but not least, the moon-phase display of this movement will remain accurate for 122 years before deviating by one day from the actual appearance of the moon in the night-sky.
