Each detail of the dial tells a story: at 12 o’clock, you will discover the off-centred minutes and hours indicator that has been subtly traced in light grey, while the satin brushed hands highlight the mechanics of the mouvement as time passes. At 3 o’clock, the “machine room” is revealed thanks to an intricate mechanism highlighting two “tooth-wheels” that turn to the rhythm of the movement. The power reserve indicator resembles the lever that regulates the speed on a steam boat and unveils the delicate perlage where the RJ logo is discreetly nested.

The timepieces’ heart is placed at 6 o’clock featuring a mechanical flying tourbillon that has been designed in the shape of an anchor with a power reserve of 48 hours. The tourbillon’s cage has been slightly raised to allow a perfect view of its complex structure. At 9 o’clock, we are reminded of steam-powered engines with a large titanium piston that is connected to the movement, allowing it to move up and down at a pace of 30 seconds in each direction. The full view of the dial evokes the image of a sophisticated steam room with an industrial touch thanks to its satin brushed finish.

The case back of the timepiece hides other design characteristics true to the Steampunk aesthetic. An anchor shaped component with beautiful “Côtes de Genève” decorations, holds the tourbillon cage together. The barrel at 12 o’clock in the shape of a sun has been brushed from the centre to its exterior, leaving a remarkable circular pattern. Each timepiece in this limited collection of 25 is finished with an exquisite Hornback alligator strap highlighting the darkness and complexity of the dial.

There are no hands, but rather totally autonomous jumping numerals that come to life by lighting up in the centre of the watch to indicate the passage of time.

This movement was developed under the leadership of Abraham-Louis Breguet in the late eighteenth century, watchmaker to the French monarchy. The Tourbillon was created to counteract the effects of gravity on the balance and escapement mechanisms by placing them in a freely rotating cage.

Cecil Purnell, remarkable man

In the early twentieth-century Cecil Purnell settled in the French Jura, more specifically, Besançon. An insatiable man of taste, he became fascinated by the intricacy of mechanical movements. Thenceforth began a lifelong quest in the pursuit of an ever-higher appreciation for that which gave life to his imagination. Tourbillon was the heart of this movement.

Since early childhood, Jonathan Purnell, fascinated by his grandfather’s timekeeping, began dismantling and reconstructing watches. Sharing the watchmaking passion with the same enthusiasm as his grandfather, Jonathan immersed himself in the industry. He made his debut with the most-renown names in high-end watchmaking, travelling the world for 30 years in search of knowledgeable  watch  fans,  well-informed collectors, and avid aficionados. He deepened his knowledge and appreciation for storied and master-class mechanical timepieces, with many passing through his hands. His address book contained the names of prestigious families and men of power. It was such that he would pursue his dream of realizing the movement that  had  impassioned  and  inspired  his grandfather, and seek to leave his mark on Haute Horlogerie.

A key alliance

In the footsteps of his grandfather, Jonathan Purnell embarks on the incredible challenge of standing alongside the hallmarks of high-end watchmaking by putting his stamp on the Tourbillon watch. The dream starts to bear fruit when he crosses paths with Stephane Valsamides. Full of purist watch-making visions, Stephane Valsamides also is a connoisseur of fine watches and the business of exceptional high complication timepieces. On behalf of a number of famous names, he has traveled the world, inevitably crossing paths with Jonathan Purnell. His fascination for “old-world” craftsmanship and the pursuit of perfection led him to share Jonathan’s passion, and he decided to take on a new set of challenges. Cofounder of Cecil Purnell, he has co-written the brand’s enduring story and its quest for excellence, helping to realize the dream of imprinting the true stamp of quality signified by the arrival of the CP 3000 calibers.

World-Time Bi-Axial Tourbillon

In the spirit of Tourbillons, the Bi-Axial mechanism precisely compensates for influences due to gravity. Its optimal frequency is achieved in rapid movement, mesmerizingly visible on the dial. The World Time is displayed in a spectacular and ingenious way on a half sphere.

The hemisphere makes one revolution in 24 hours and allows one to know the time with the indication of terrestrial hours engraved around its perimeter. The realization of the World Map in a half sphere required perfect mastery of its spatial geometry with several crafts required. Complementing the World Time is the indication of the horizon, displayed by a Spherical Eccentric rotor.

Born out of determination to continuously push the boundaries of watchmaking, the Freak collection has brought together the boldest innovations of the past fourteen years, originating both from Ulysse Nardin and the watchmaking industry as a whole. Thus the Freak was the first watch to incorporate a silicium escapement in 2001, a diamond escapement in 2005 and the Dual Ulysse escapement the same year. As stunning as ever with the bold nautical character of its Tourbillon using an anchor and sail as hands, the new FreakLab is easily legible and features the date at 4 o'clock. On the technological side, it is for the first time equipped with the UlyChoc safety system, a new generation of shock protection devices.

The Freak's avant-garde design remains unrivalled to this day. With neither dial nor hands, it is constructed so that the movement turns about its own axis. Connected together at the center of this unusual ship, the lower deck thus displays the hours, while the upper deck – which carries the gear train, the balance-wheel and balance-spring unit and the exclusive Dual Ulysse silicium escapement – shows the minutes.

The Dual Ulysse escapement also marks a significant technical advance: it has abandoned the traditional pallet fork and escape wheel. Two silicium impulse wheels, each with eighteen active, meshing teeth, alternately activate a stopper which transmits its energy directly to the balance staff, first in one direction, then in the other. Thus this mechanism, which requires no lubrication, always delivers its force in the direction of the rotation of the balance wheel, minimizing friction.

On the new FreakLab, the entire floating upper bridge has been completely redesigned. First, the gear train has been made smaller in order to reposition the balance-wheel and balance-spring at the center of the movement. This operation lightened the dial and made it easier to read the hours. At the same time, the oscillating unit has been equipped with UlyChoc shock absorbers, entirely designed, developed and produced in-house.

A classical system comprises five micro-elements: the block, the setting, the jewel, the counterpivot and the spring. With simplification in mind and special focus on efficiency, Ulysse Nardin replaced three of these functions with a single one-piece component made of silicium, a genuine world first which is the subject of a patent application. This solution avoids forces of play and friction, enabling the balance staff to be perfectly recentered in the event of an impact.

Flaunting more of a corsair facade than ever, with an anchor to show the hours and a bridge representing a sail for the minutes, the FreakLab is phenomenally easy to manipulate. A safety clip between the horns at 6 o'clock frees the rotating bezel sculpted in the shape of waves.

This is used to set the hours and minutes when rotated clockwise, and the date when rotated anticlockwise. And the mainspring barrel – designed for a power reserve of more than seven days – is wound by the other bezel. Thus the two bezels, front and back, are constituent parts of the movement.
