Harry Winston - Opus 12

Harry Winston - Opus 12 Limited edition NEW Baselworld 2012

 DEVELOPED WITH EMMANUEL BOUCHET

Harry Winston seems to be the leader in the world of fine watch making, that’s taken upon itself the duty of changing the way people perceive time. After the aesthetically surprising creation Opus11 last year, for the Baselworld 2011 event, they have bought in the Opus 12 which will be a major attention grabber at Baselworld 2012 currently underway. For those who love the complicated movements of a watch’s tourbillon the Opus 12 is the perfect bonanza, as time gets displayed in a perfect symphony of movements, amidst great horological craftsmanship. Like most of its other watches, this is also a limited edition of just 120 units in all.

The central dial which displays the hours, minutes, and also the ½ hour slots move about in clockwise direction with perfect precision and animation alongside. With inspiration from the Copernicus theory of earth revolution around the sun and itself, the multi-layered dial shifts in a way in which the 5 minute retrograde covers a fixed distance to display the duration of 5 minutes of time, before moving back to its original position to begin a similar journey. Along with this movement, the hours hand is perfect synchronized to display a completely different dimension of time, even though complicated to a large extent. What is also surprising is that the power reserve and seconds indicator are also a part of the complicated exercise, all at the same place!

Technically speaking, this is indeed a mechanical hand-wound movement which 607 parts to it. This also features 80 jewels, apart from 2 barrels and 24 hands. The power reserve of the timepiece stands at 45 hours each time. This whole machine is stored in the 18K polished white gold casing with sapphire crystal covering, and the diameter of it is 46mm. The dial features the use of rhodium as well. The flip side of the dial as the branding, numerical engraving of the unit of the particular watch, and also the name of the main designer, Emmanuel Bouchet. The strapping of the watch is hand crafted black alligator leather affixed on a folding buckle.

Opus 12 defies the conventional rules of watchmaking, giving birth to the most improbable mechanical concept.
This exceptional timepiece deliberately overturns the perception of time by drawing its inspiration from the Copernican revolution.
In most watches the evolution of time is imperceptible.
Opus 12, on the other hand, goes into action in a remarkable way, its hands changing the guard every five minutes. At each change of the hour, the movement executes a very elaborate drill exercise by the successive rotation of the hands. Below the retrograde indication, a floating small seconds hand graduated on a translucent ring passes above a power-reserve indicator.
