Venezianico reinterprets its diver watch with a special dial treated in 24-carat gold, paying tribute to Venetian craftsmanship that evokes the golden details of the Basilica of San Marco.

A symbol of the wealth and magnificence of the Serenissima Republic, Venetian craftsmanship has ancient roots, dating back to the Byzantine period when the lagoon city became a center of refined artistic production. Skilled artisans created extraordinary works using techniques passed down from generation to generation, as evidenced by the golden details of the Basilica of San Marco. This mastery in the use of gold adorned not only Venetian churches and palaces but also artifacts representing the power and grandeur of the Republic.

Embodying the values of “Venetianity,” the Morelli brothers today reinterpret their diver, the Nereide, with a 42mm case made of 316L steel, applying a special 24-carat gold-finished dial that recalls the ancient lamination of precious metals.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

An emotional homage to the gilded inner walls of the Basilica of San Marco, covered with mosaics from the 9th and 13th centuries, made with colored and gilded glass tesserae depicting biblical scenes, saints, and geometric decorations, following a medieval technique that used thin gold leaf on glass, covering over 8,000 square meters of surface area.

The noble metal, whose craftsmanship made Venice famous over the centuries and requires uncommon artisanal skill, is presented on the dials of the Nereide Aureo with an extraordinary rippled finish that makes each model a unique piece. Each metal disc undergoes a tumbling process to achieve a surface with deliberate imperfections, followed by a galvanic treatment where it is immersed in an electrolytic solution containing pure gold particles.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The subsequent application of electric current allows the particles to deposit evenly on the surface of the disc, creating a durable and brilliant gold layer that, coated with transparent protective varnishes, is shielded from scratches, oxidation, and other damage, ensuring superior durability and resistance compared to traditional lamination methods, all to guarantee an impeccable and resilient surface.

The treatment offers the dial, enriched with baton indexes in Super-LumiNova® BGW9 for perfect night vision, not only the same aesthetic quality as lamination but also superior resistance and uniformity over time. Everything is perfectly harmonized under high-quality sapphire glass, with the unidirectional bezel in polished tungsten, one of the hardest materials in the world.

To count hours, minutes, and seconds, within the elegant and satin-finished case lines, there is the Swiss precision of the Sellita SW200 movement, while the case back pays homage, through engraving, to the majesty of the main nave of the Basilica of San Marco, with its walls adorned with gold leaf, simultaneously celebrating the rich artisanal tradition of Venetian goldbeaters.

The watch is completed by a new bracelet inspired by the works of Renaissance sculptor Jacopo Sansovino, known for his mastery and attention to detail. Composed of five links, two polished and three satin-finished, the Sansovino Bracelet, through a solid deployant clasp with dual finish and micro-adjustment, ensures a comfortable and secure fit, ideal for diving enthusiasts and those who love the perfect balance between elegance and sportiness.

LYRIQUE® ÉTUDE2 Guilloché Burgundy Dial 2024

The road to Custom Exceptional Horology

An international group of watch patrons banded together to create the Lyrique Group. We work directly with top watchmakers and designers to create watches reflecting the finest tradition of Swiss watchmaking. We support the development of new and creative watches, movements and techniques grounded in the craftsmanship developed over the centuries.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

By supporting and expanding the works of exceptional horology, we create the kinds of watches available through the combined resources of the group that would not otherwise be available to its members. In turn, Lyrique creates watches for an entire group of those who value exceptional Swiss horology heretofore unserved. We support the Horological Society of New York by donating a new watch for their auction to raise scholarship funds for watchmaking students.

Adding Architectural Depth

Étude N°2 Guilloché adds depth to Lyrique’s original watch by teaming with the guilloché masters of Comblémine, SA

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Using an original design by Matthieu Allègre, the dial is a swirl of Burgundy wine in a crystal glass surrounded by chandeliers and candles. The brushed sides of the Voutilainen & Cattin case underscore the polished teardrop tipped belt securing the straps. The ring defining the eccentric seconds terminates in a scorpion’s kiss on the cheek of the 8.

The brushed hour chapter ring serves as a base for the raised applied Arabic numbers. The sub-dial at eighty-thirty integrates the center guilloché with the side of the dial crossed by the Fiedler observatorie hands. A hand-made ostrich strap by Protexo and buckle by Boucledor completes the Étude N°2’s design. Sébastien Monney and associates of M.A.D’E GVA, Sarl assembles each watch.

Movement

A hand-made movement, the AGH-6802 by Agenhor, is an updated version of the AGH-6801 used in Lyrique Étude N° 1. 👇

Included in the update are a Straumann® Hairspring, a balance wheel designed by Agenhor and produced by Precision Engineering AG, improved balance wheel bridge to guarantee a better strength in the long term, and modified base plates to provide more security around the anchor.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The AGH-6802 retains the AgenEse® gear for the smooth movement of the eccentric second hand, and the AgenPit® regulator eases adjusting the hairspring without using collets nor a regulation lever. The AgenPit® regulator adjusts both the frequency and beat of the balance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Operating at 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour, the AGH-6802 provides an unhurried and accurate timekeeping. As a hand-wound movement, the winding gears through the keyless works is remarkable for how smooth the crown winds the mainspring to the full 40 hours.

Sustainability

All of the suppliers in the creation of Lyrique Étude N°2 engage in sustainable practices and use sustainable materials: Agenhor SA, Voutilainen & Cattin SA, Comblémine SA: Cadrans et projets horlogers SA, Fiedler SA, Boucledor SA, Bracelets Protexo SA, and Lucrin Geneva.

MONTBLANC – Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around The World In 80 Days Edition

MONTBLANCStar Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around The World In 80 Days 43mm Steel Edition 2024

The Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around the World in 80 Days takes its wearer through a captivating global journey of a literary classic

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The story behind the Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around the World in 80 Days begins in 1872 with Jules Verne and his famous novel Around the World in 80 Days. This well-known tale, woven with intrigue and adventure, has held captive the imaginations of the young and the old for over 150 years.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For those unacquainted with the story, it all starts with a bet between two British gentlemen about whether it is possible to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The question is raised during a spirited card game of Whist that is being played between the main character Phileas Fogg, a precise and methodical English gentleman, and a companion from his distinguished society – the Reform Club in London. Fogg not only embraces the crazy idea, but also accepts the challenge, embarking on the journey that very evening from Charing Cross railway station, accompanied by his loyal French valet, Jean Passepartout.

This unusual evening marks the start of a truly remarkable journey that contains many unexpected adventures. Along the way, Fogg and Passepartout encounter various obstacles, detours, and even suspicions of criminal activity. The story captures the spirit of exploration of different cultures and a thrilling race against time.

A Race Against the Clock

Just like Fogg and Passepartout, the new 43mm, stainless steel, the Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around the World in 80 Days was crafted to accompany adventurers on their journeys around the globe with its in-house worldtime complication that indicates 24 time zones at a glance.

Orbis Terrarum

The term “Orbis Terrarum” comes from the Latin for “circuit of the world” and was the name given to a world map created by the Roman general Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in the first century AD. Agrippa needed a practical map that could be used for military purposes. Disregarding the elaborate maps previously made by the Greeks, he decided to create a round world map based on surveys of the extensive system of military roads running throughout the Roman empire.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The map was sent to all the great cities in the empire, and even if no known copies are believed to have survived, this passion for maps and representations of our planet lives on in the Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around the World in 80 Days.

A Journey Across the Dial

Phileas Fogg’s journey is depicted on a multi-layer dial that rotates with the movement mechanism. The dial depicts a world map as seen from the North Pole and uses a gold-colored transfer technique for some of the indications. The key cities on his route – San Francisco, New York, Queens Town, Yokohama, Hong Kong, Calcutta, Bombay, London, Aden, Suez, and Brindisi – are represented by gold dots, while the route itself is mapped out with 80 gold dashes.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The names of different cities representing the 24 time zones are written on the dial around the map in white, while London, the city of departure, stands out in gold. The world map is completed with hands inspired by those found on 19th century pocket watches.

The Story Continues

The timepiece pays tribute to this journey around the world in every detail, from the dial to the caseback and even on the lining of the strap. The titanium caseback features a 3D laser engraving that brings both color, depth, and realism to a representation of the majestic and faithful elephant Kiouni who provided transport between Kholby and Allahabad in the novel.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Montblanc uses a special technique to highlight this incredible story, giving it an authentic 3D rendering, as if it was a photograph. Made of titanium, the metal must first be structured, which means that the decoration will be engraved by laser, taking into consideration the relief of the original drawing. Next, the desired finish (matte and shiny) is similarly achieved by laser. In the final phase, colors are created with laser-generated oxidation, with the level of oxidation determining the final result.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The caseback also features imagery of the impressive Allahabad Fort, the emblem of one of the most venerated cities in India, a Mongolian steamboat that provided the transport for Fogg and Passepartout’s adventurers between Italy and India, a traditional Japanese temple called Benten Yokohama that they passed along the way, and a locomotive from the Great Peninsular Railway that took them across the Indian lands. The adventures continue onto the lining of the strap with embossed Chinese coins and Boteh leaves discovered on the 80-day journey.

Calibre MB 29.20

The Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around the World in 80 Days is powered by the MB 29.20 automatic calibre and comes with a Manufacture worldtime complication and approximately 42-hour power reserve.

How to Read the Time Zones

Once set, the user only has to press on the pusher located at eight o’clock until the reference city is at the top. The hour and minute hands will automatically synchronize to indicate the time in the city of choice. There is also a day/night indicator that works with a rotating disc that changes from light blue (for daylight hours) to dark blue (for the night), giving an overview of the passage of the sun around the planet.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This haute horlogerie timepiece is a testament to Montblanc’s expertise in crafting intuitive, practical complications in a contemporary fine watchmaking style, all the while celebrating the spirit of adventure that the Maison shares with Jules Verne and his renowned novel.

Christopher Ward – C1 Bel Canto Viola 41 Titanium

Christopher WardC1 Bel Canto Viola Titanium 41mm Automatic 2024-2025

The art of sound
C1 Bel Canto Viola: the chime is now

For those who don’t want to be seen wearing the emperor’s new clothes. Creating a chiming watch is one of the greatest challenges in watchmaking – and one that Christopher Ward has passed with the C1 Bel Canto Viola.

Meet the extraordinary C1 Bel Canto.

Pre-order by the end of January 2025. With a new, iridescent Viola dial in a lightweight titanium case, they seem completely alive, marking each hour with a cheerful, reassuring internal chime. And it sees The CW asserting its watchmaking ambitions like never before.

Christopher Ward has always pushed the creative envelope. It’s this philosophy that produced in-house movement Calibre SH21, and was responsible for the legendary JJ calibres (named after our first master watchmaker Johannes Jahnke) – unique modules piggybacking on existing movements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Created by CW’s technical director Frank Stelzer, Calibre FS01 is an ingenious modified movement with Christopher Ward’s DNA in every cog and spring. With an inspired piece of lateral thinking, Frank realised that CW’s ‘jumping hour’ movement could be adapted to create a chiming sound on the hour, every hour. More than 60 new components form the striking mechanism module which sits atop a Sellita SW200-1 base movement which provides the 38-hour power reserve.

Today, the key to the C1 Bel Canto is FS01, a new chiming movement named after current technical director Frank Stelzer. In all horological history, little has tested the watchmaker like creating sound, so it’s no wonder Bel Canto took three years of tortuous development. Bel Canto is what’s called an hour chime, or – more romantically – a Sonnerie au Passage complication, which translates as ‘Passage of Time’.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Bel Canto is an extrapolation of the C60 Concept, in that we’re taking the best hand-finished components and putting them within reach of many,” says Jörg Bader Junior, head of product at CW’s Biel atelier. “But in terms of technological challenge, it’s taken us into uncharted territory. We had to figure everything out for ourselves.”

The layered dial plays host to a floating time-telling sundial

The time-telling subdial ‘floats’ over the sunray-finished Viola dial, giving the wearer a feeling of depth. The hands and indexes are filled with Super-LumiNova® for after-dark visibility. With each JJ calibre, the desire wasn’t just to produce a complication, but to do it in a fresh, efficient way. Ten years ago, JJ01 was designed to offer the most accurate jumping-hour function possible and, by spreading the load over an entire hour, Johannes managed it. This success became one of the starting points for FS01.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It’s a little known fact that Christopher Ward creates watches for Meistersinger, the German specialist in single-hand timepieces. A few years ago Frank made a new model for them, the Bell Hora, a Sonnerie au Passage. Would it be possible to do something similar for Christopher Ward?

The Bell Hora was a stepping stone,” says CEO and co-founder Mike France. “But with Bel Canto we wanted to bring the striking mechanism to the front, so the wearer could watch it in action. The question became: could we make a chiming watch both look and sound beautiful at the same time?

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“Finding a way to split out the components so they felt balanced across the entire face, took years,” says CW watch designer Will Brackfield. “Each time we moved one piece, it had a knock-on effect on the others. The platine – the blue module plate behind the important elements – would have a gorgeous sunray finish, so we needed to find a way to hide minor components behind that too.”

Hand-finished to perfection

The multi-layered architecture of the Bel Canto’s dial is enhanced by the exquisitely executed polishing of the hammer, spring and bridges – which together resemble a songbird. Crafted by hand (under microscope) by some of Switzerland’s finest artisans, finishing of this standard is usually the preserve of only the most exclusive and expensive brands.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

One of the great challenges was striking the right balance between note and loudness,” says CW’s head of product design, Adrian Buchmann. “We soon learned that the case would have to be made of Grade 5 titanium, a material we’d never used before, with lots of empty space and resonance points. It’s a very dense metal – and creates a sound cage with the best possible vibrations.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

So, what exactly does the chime sound like? “Elegant,” says Mike. “Luxurious,” says Will. “A long, high-pitched note,” says Adrian.

The sound of silence

By pressing the pusher at 4 o’clock on the side of the case, you can switch off the chime – something that’s shown in the movement of the red indicator on the dial. No one can quite define it – it is more like a xylophone, or a hotel bell? – but all agree that it’s delightful. Technically, it turns out to be a D, also known as Re (“a drop of golden sun”) on the fixed do solfège system, familiar from The Sound Of Music.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

One thing everyone comments on is how the bridge structure towards the bottom looks like a bird,” Mike says. “The red ‘beak’ is actually the on-off mechanism, controlled by a pusher at 4 o’clock, and moves to indicate whether the chime is on or off, while the hammer is its tail. Bel Canto means ‘beautiful singing’, so there’s whimsical humour going on which seems very Christopher Ward.”

A case built for sound

Our Light-catcher™ case has had a subtle but sporty makeover. The first CW case made from Grade 5 titanium, the metal – which is less dense than steel – has been chosen for its ability to amplify sound. The internal architecture of the case has also been designed for the same reason.
Other details are equally as ambitious.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial consists of intriguingly stacked layers, rising from the platine through the bridges to the time-telling subdial and finally the twin-flags logo, printed on the lower surface of the sapphire crystal, while the titanium  41mm Light-catcher™case has been given a subtle sporty makeover.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Quite simply, no brand anywhere has made the art of sound so accessible, or opened up the possibility of owning such high horological art to so many. Hearing really is believing.

We love quality watches – so much so that in 2004 we started making our own. Combining award-winning English design with the f nest Swiss watchmaking skills, and concentrating on craftsmanship rather than salesmanship, we’ve created watches that are the equal (or better than) the world’s most celebrated brands in every respect. Apart from price. The C1 Bel Canto is one such watch. But don’t take our word for it: Do your research
