Panerai - Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio 47mm Special Edition PAM00427

PANERAI - LUMINOR 1950 RATTRAPANTE 8 DAYS TITANIO - 47mm Special Edition
Panerai Transat Classique 2012

December 2012: a fleet of vintage yachts which have made sailing history is voyaging from Cascais in Portugal, heading for Barbados. This is the Panerai Transat Classique 2012: hundreds of enthusiasts including owners, captains and crews are competing in a quadrennial race which not only celebrates the elegance, the beauty, the remarkable craftsmanship and the uniqueness which are typical features of every vintage yacht, but which is also a challenge bringing out the strength, courage and valour of people faced with the power of the sea. The participants in the Panerai Transat Classique 2012 are travelling 4,000 miles in yachts which in some cases boast histories of a hundred years or more, driven by the power of the wind and the ocean currents, but above all by the great passion that unites all lovers of the sea.

Officine Panerai, sponsor of the race, is celebrating the most spectacular race of the 2012 classic yachting season with the Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio, an exclusive Special Edition distinguished by an engraving of the logo of the Panerai Transat Classique 2012 on the back of the case. The watch has been made in a limited edition of 500 units, one of them earmarked for the owner of the yacht winning the transatlantic race. In honour of the Panerai Transat Classic 2012, Officine Panerai has created a model of sophisticated horological quality, every detail of which has its roots in the past of the brand, which has always been connected to the sea as a result of its historic association with the Italian Navy.

Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio is a split-seconds chronograph with vertical clutch and twin column wheels, and it offers numerous functions that are characteristic of top-of-therange mechanical watchmaking, all assembled in the P.2006 movement, entirely developed and created in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

The split-seconds function, also known as rattrapante, operates two hands that are superimposed and partially independent: the first, controlled by the button at 8 o’clock, is the chronograph hand; the second, controlled by the button at 10 o’clock, is used for measuring partial times or a second event simultaneous with the first. To make it easier and clearer to read, the hand of the small minute counter moves in jumps instead of continuously.

The P.2006 hand-wound movement has a long power reserve of eight days, a traditional duration for Panerai watches. This is achieved by means of a special patented system of three spring barrels. The remaining power reserve can be read on the dial from a linear indicator above the number six.

To enable the watch to be synchronised perfectly with a reference signal, the P.2006 movement also has a seconds reset function, which zeroes the seconds hand by stopping the balance wheel until the winding crown has been returned to the running position.

The Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio has a brushed titanium case 47 mm in diameter, fitted with the classic lever device which hermetically seals the winding crown to ensure waterresistance to 10 atmospheres (equivalent to a depth of about 100 metres).
The bezel is made of polished titanium and surrounds a large black dial of great simplicity and sporting elegance. The structure of the dial consists of two superimposed discs with a layer of Super-LumiNova® between them: a type of construction which has been characteristic of Panerai watches since the 1930s, it provides great legibility and visibility even in situations of very low light,
such as underwater.
Identified by the reference PAM00427, the Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio is supplied with a rubber strap. It is sold exclusively in Panerai boutiques throughout the world and at a small number of specialist watch shops.

Ulysse Nardin - Sonata Streamline

Ulysse Nardin - Sonata Streamline NEW

Chiming Into the Future – Combining Design and Mechanical Innovation.

Futuristic in design, stealth in performance is the Sonata Streamline. Inspired by the aerodynamic aesthetic of superyachts, the Sonata Streamline reveals a strong and streamlined case that is powerfully masculine. The case, exquisitely fashioned from titanium, presents one option paired with ceramic – a material unmatched in durability – and gold, and the other with 18-karat rose gold. The essence of ocean navigation is emulated in the design of the Sonata’s two dial versions. The modern appearance of the sleek case structure is reinforced by the strong geometrical detailing on both dial executions. Accompanying the Sonata’s distinctive design traits is its exacting performance. A mechanical instrument, the Sonata Streamline is run by a patented selfwinding manufacture caliber – a caliber developed in house over the course of seven years by Ulysse Nardin visionaries, engineers and technicians that presents unprecedented precision and multiple functions.

The movement combines a 22-karatgold rotor with a silicium anchor escapement. Both the anchor and escapement wheel are manufactured from silicium – a groundbreaking development. Further contributing to the Sonata’s precision is the silicium hairspring 1.1.1. and the acclaimed Ulysse Nardin inertial balance wheel – additional change-making industry innovations brought to fruition by Ulysse Nardin. Revolutionary in its exploration and application of breakthrough materials, Ulysse Nardin produces all of the silicium components for its timepieces through Sigatec, a member of Ulysse Nardin’s group of companies.

Features of equal importance include the movement’s merging of the melodic, “chime” alarm setting showing a sub-dial at 2 o’clock that indicates the hour and minute alarm setting with a countdown indicator positioned above 10 o’clock. The countdown indicator is based on a 24-hours mechanism, allowing the timepiece alarm to be set 24 hours ahead. It calculates the time left on a 24-hour scale until the alarm chimes. This permits easy reading of whether the alarm is set for a.m. or p.m., with the hand at 9 o’clock denoting whether or not the alarm is activated.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Also showcased is the important dual time system with the instant time zone adjustor; the sub-dial located above 6 o’clock displays the 24-hour dual time functions. This patented dual-time function permits time zone adjustments forward and backward by a simple press of the pushers – plus (+) or minus (-) – to change the position of the hour hand. The original home time, or reference time, stays displayed while the date, alarm and countdown adjust automatically when a time zone adjustment is made. The second time zone is synchronized with the oversized date, as well as the countdown function. The Sonata Streamline, with its aerodynamic, futuristic design and characteristic Ulysse Nardin inventiveness, is the perfect piece for the man who considers exceptional design and performance a way of life.

Frederique Constant - Classics Manufacture Worldtimer

Frederique Constant - Classics Manufacture Worldtimer Limited Edition NEW

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...     BIG FOTO

Frederique Constant is a company that loves to put a fresh twist into classic ideas and classic designs. With that in mind, we are delighted to present the exciting new Worldtimer Manufacture collection.

In days gone by, it was the “man about town” who had the respect and admiration of his peers. These fine gentlemen wore pinstripe suits, with colourful ties, shiny shoes and invariably a classy wristwatch. Nowadays, the man about town has become a man of the world, and while the clothes may have changed, the presence of a handsome, classic, elegant watch is still very much part of the gentleman’s ensemble.

The Worldtimer’s three-part case is made of hand polished stainless steel that shines like the sun.  A convex sapphire crystal and see-through case back give a glimpse of the intricate inner workings of this incredible timepiece.

The dial comes in silver, with a beautifully engraved guilloché design or an amazingly detailed world map in the center. Hand polished black oxydized hands compliment the guilloché center, while hand polished blue hands accompany the world map and luminous indexes.

The genius of the Worldtimer Manufacture lies in its simplicity of use.  All functions can be accessed simply by using the crown; there are no extra push buttons sticking out from the ultra-smooth and polished sides of the case.  The Worldtimer function can be achieved simply by selecting the desired city and placing it at the 12 o’clock position on the dial.  Internal discs automatically synchronise, and after that, it’s possible to see what time it is in any of the 24 cities on the dial.  In addition, thin discs also indicate at a glance whether it’s day (white disc) or night (black disc).

With an eye to the most intricate detail, the designers of the Worldtimer Manufacture collection even selected watch straps that exude all-world style. You can choose from a black alligator strap with a stainless steel buckle, or add a dash of colour with a navy alligator strap with off-white stitching and a stainless steel buckle.

What can you give the person who has everything?  “Time” is the answer, and in the case of the Frederique Constant Worldtimer Manufacture collection, you’ll be giving a truly limited edition of time in the form of one of these classic watches.
Both  models mentioned here are part of a limited edition collection of just 1888 pieces.  Each Worldtimer is presented in a classic wooden gift box, with an engraved limited edition plate verifying its authenticity.

All this and more is available at a price that could surprise even the most seasoned of fine watch enthusiasts.

JS Watch Co. - Islandus Reykjavik

JS Watch Co. - Islandus Reykjavik

I am gold and glory, a loving gilded treasure.
I am a gem and jewel,
The Lord’s equal measure.

This is how the vagabond, Sölvi Helgason, described himself in a stanza. He never doubted his own genius and believed that he was the foremost authority on art, science, debate, oratory and mathematics. To fit his stature, he decided to call himself “Solon Islandus” and acquired the quintessential scholar’s apparel, the overcoat and glasses. He was resigned to breaking the law, wandering the country and begging for a living, because most 19th century Icelandic farmers believed that this penniless braggart, who was raised in the country while never putting in an honest day’s work, was an unbearable and untrustworthy rambler. Many would sic their dogs on him on sight, but some enjoyed his pretence and discourse enough to let him spend the night. Bólu-Hjálmar, the celebrated Icelandic poet, was amongst the latter and wrote this about Sölvi:

A philosopher arrived in beggar’s garb.
Spectacled he walked on skis,
Lack of fortune his lasting disease.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

In days gone by, it was widely believed that experts in the art of mathematics could accomplish amazing things, including calculating babies into the womb. It is said that Sölvi bragged about a competition against a world famous mathematician in Copenhagen, where he won by calculating triplets into a distinguished and magnificent African woman.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

When we at JS Watch Co. Reykjavik took it upon ourselves to calculate a distinguished and magnificent watch in to the world, we realized that it needed some of the brilliance and innovation of Sölvi. It had to be powered by the bearer and its design and construction needed to be inspired by 19th century timepieces. It isn’t likely that the genius, Solon Islandus, ever owned a watch, so we decided to honour him as one of the first commoners to live according to his own rules, making a name for himself as an artist of life. Naturally, a great deal of expertise in the art of mathematics was needed to assemble a watch of this calibre, ISLANDUS. After two years in production, the watch grew to 44 mm and the number 12 stands out on the watch face in a bright red colour. If Solon Islandus had been given the chance to design a timepiece, it would certainly have been like ISLANDUS, no compromises, with high quality and standards throughout.

BALL Watch Company for BMW

BALL Watch Company for BMW

Independent Swiss watchmaker BALL Watch Company
and German automaker BMW sign an exclusive agreement.

BALL Watch Company and BMW share the same values, especially a passion for precision mechanical engineering, an undeniable spirit of innovation and constant attention to technical and aesthetic excellence.

Through their quest for perfection, precision and expertise, the watchmaking and automobile worlds are an ideal match. As pioneer of chronometry standards, BALL Watch Company is worldwide known for having set the official standard watch of the American railroads. It was therefore an obvious step for BALL Watch Company and the legendary German automaker BMW to sign an exclusive cooperation agreement.

This natural union, based on the exchange of expertise and resources between the two brands to drive performance, aesthetics and precision, will in particular lead to the design of a BALL & BMW collection reflecting an assertive and decidedly contemporary spirit. A new generation of timekeeping instruments with a strong personality, created to pass the test of time while ensuring the pleasure of unsurpassable comfort: that very same pleasure that all drivers experience behind the wheel of a BMW

To cement and assert the determination defining this association, the watchmaking firm will be injecting the full scope of its expertise: COSC certification for all models in the collection, technological optimization and innovations, aesthetic refinement and balanced proportions. Dedicated to the automotive world and aficionados of mechanical engineering excellence, the new BALL & BMW timepieces will incorporate various technical feats, especially a revolutionary anti-shock system. The BALL Watch Company’s exclusive patented Amortiser® system will protect the movement against extreme shocks. This exploit of micro-mechanical engineering, inspired by the automotive world, features a shock-absorbing protection ring - also anti-magnetic - enveloping the movement. Safety and performance combined: another two core values shared by BALL Watch
Company and BMW

ARNOLD & SON - Instrument DBS Equation Sidereal

ARNOLD & SON - Instrument DBS Equation Sidereal NEW

The Instrument DBS Equation Sidereal is a tribute to two watches (Nos. 1 and 2) made by John Roger Arnold that showed mean solar and sidereal time on two separate subdials. The movements of these two watches, made between 1796 and 1799, featured some of the most famous inventions of father and son, including their fabulous thermo-compensated Z balance, expansion escapement and gold helical spring. It is no exaggeration to say that they represented the state of the art in the micromechanics of their time.
Watches with a sidereal time display were extremely rare at this time. After the Arnolds had paved the way, Breguet followed in their footsteps and produced a few watches with a sidereal time display and a similar dial layout (such as No. 3863, sold in 1824).

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Creating a precise sidereal time display is a tall order. Simply adding a second gear train to a standard movement showing mean solar time is not a viable solution because a mean sidereal day is about 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.091 seconds, which is not a round fraction of the 24 hours in a mean solar day. This means it is virtually impossible to obtain the correct rotation speed using gears. To guarantee the kind of precision demanded by Arnold & Son, the only choice was to create a movement with the correct rotation speed from the start: in other words a movement specifically for sidereal time. The answer was a totally new movement with a double barrel/gear train and double balance/escapement running at different speeds that enables the watch to display mean solar time and mean sidereal time simultaneously. This technical solution has the additional advantage that neither of the two indications saps energy from the other. Watches with a double balance and escapement are extremely rare and have almost disappeared, so it is with some pride that Arnold & Son have revived the tradition.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...     BIG FOTO

The DBS Equation Sidereal has a perfectly symmetrical arrangement of the bridges, barrels and gear trains. The symmetry is continued on the dial side, where the two adjacent balance cocks create a harmonious circle. Sidereal time is displayed on the left subdial and mean solar time on the right. In addition, a subdial at 12 o'clock indicates the equation of both times on a 24-hour basis, which allows the user to measure the difference between mean solar time and sidereal time and to ascertain whether the time in both zones is a.m. or p.m. The watch has a long central permanent seconds hand (for mean solar time). The two barrels are wound using the crown on the right, but sidereal time and mean solar time are set separately using the crowns on the left and right, respectively. This ensures that neither of the displays is changed or manipulated by accident.

Sidereal time
Sidereal time is the timekeeping system used by astronomers to track the direction needed to point a telescope at a particular star in the night sky. A mean sidereal day is measured by the rotation of the earth relative to the stars rather than the sun and lasts 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.091 seconds. It is approximately four minutes shorter than a mean solar day because, owing to the movement of the earth round the sun, the time that elapses before a distant star appears at the same point is slightly less than the time it takes for the sun to be directly over the same point.
