OFFICINE PANERAIPAM01243 Radiomir Eilean 45mm Special Edition 2021

Panerai is releasing a new watch, the Radiomir Eilean, inspired by the 1936 launches of both the original Radiomir and classic yacht Eilean

If you’re in Portofino during July 2021, you may notice a special visitor in the waters surrounding Italy’s iconic harbour town.

Even the greatest legends have a start. The modern Panerai watch as we know it today was born in 1936 with the Radiomir. Intended to accompany the men of the Navy in their missions, this instrument bears the same name as the substance patented by Guido Panerai to produce luminescent dials and sighting mechanisms. Its characteristics are remarkable: a large steel case in the shape of a cushion, luminescent numerals and indexes as well as welded wire lugs which have remained largely unchanged from one generation of Radiomir to another, testifying to the iconic character of this original model.

Eilean, the 22 metre classic ketch belonging to Italian watchmaker Panerai, will be dropping anchor close to Portofino’s shores to mark a significant moment that commemorates both the past and present of the brand.

Specifically, the sailing yacht will make her appearance in Portofino to celebrate the launch of a new Panerai watch, the Radiomir Eilean.

This model pays homage to the first Radiomir, created by Guido Panerai to support marine missions, combined with features that embrace the aesthetic of the William Fife-designed Eilean; both works of fine craftmanship having been launched in the year of 1936.

Coincidentally, a sailboat destined to mark the history of Panerai was also manufactured in 1936. Eilean, designed by the great boatbuilder William Fife III at the Scottish shipyard of Fife, has sailed the seas of Europe and the Caribbean for decades, before falling into disrepair at the start of the 21st century. Panerai bought this sailboat in 2006 to restore it to all its splendor.

The Radiomir Eilean blends the iconic elements of the Radiomir collection with Eilean’s aesthetic heritage. Its 45 mm case, with identical proportions and characteristics since the time of the first Radiomir, is composed of a patinated steel with a matte finish reflecting the light with a softer and warmer luster than a particularly polished metal. Its case has vintage-style gold hands, which indicate the time on a signature sandwich dial, the numerals and indexes of which are coated in beige Super-LumiNova ™ with a green glow - characteristics faithful to the appearance of the first models.

The face has been designed with striations and a variegated brown finish that is reminiscent of Eilean’s teak deck, complete with a dragon engraving on the left side of the case replicating the same emblem that decorates the yacht’s hull. Within the case, the watch hands are vintage in style with a golden finish and numerals and indices feature a green glow that has been used in early models of the watch.

Other nautical details infused into the luxury timepiece include an inscription reading “Eilean 1936, identical to the one from the boat's boom, located on both the caseback and the strap.

The watch strap itself is made from leather produced in Panerai’s place of origin, Tuscany, and is adorned with intricate hand stitching inspired by the lacing found on Eilean’s sails. This stitching also ensures that the strap will endure tough conditions when worn on board, while the case itself is water resistant up to approximately 100 metres under the surface of the water and boasts a a three-day power reserve.

True to the Radiomir heritage inside and out, the Radiomir Eilean has a hand-wound movement like its ancestors. Integrated in a case waterproof to 10 bars (approximately 100 meters), this caliber with a 3-day power reserve was designed and developed at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel.

This period coincides with the arrival of the namesake sailboat in Portofino on the occasion of a commemoration of the Italianity, a concept that describes the expression par excellence of a culture, style and identity specific to Italy. The Radiomir Eilean is the perfect embodiment of Italianity in the world of watchmaking.

Union Glashuette – NORAMIS Date Deutschland Klassik Edition

UNION GLASHÜTTENORAMIS Date Deutschland Klassik Limited Edition 2021

Drafting-room blueprints and classic sector dial watches were strong inspiration for the new Noramis Date Limited Edition. With a launch date set to coincide with the 2021 edition of the ADAC Deutschland Klassik event, the timepiece comes to market in a highly exclusive edition of only 200 units. Crown of classic-car drives, the event gathers motorsport enthusiasts and charming, elegant and often rare machinery from many countries, to mingle for a memorable race and much nostalgia.

The dial design of the Noramis Date harks back to subdivided watch faces of the past, intended to highlight great precision and watchmaking skill. The unique, finely sectioned design separating the hours, minutes and seconds from one another, lends the timepiece a deeply technical note. The effect is reinforced by the thin white lines and graduated scales, beautifully set off against the shade of the dial — quite intentionally an echo of blueprints once used in drafting and engineering work, the world over.

To add a sporty note to this relatively technical mood is a complementary dark-blue calfskin leather strap, affixed to the gently curving lugs of the 40mm case, shaped for a most comfortable fit against the wearer's wrist. Inside the timepiece, a sophisticated mechanical UNG-07.01 movement with a power reserve of up to 60 hours, provides the driving force and timing accuracy, in absolute faithfulness to the high quality traditions and craftsmanship which made Glashütte famous.

This year, the ADAC Deutschland Klassik will be held from 30 June to 4 July in the beautiful region around Dresden; the route will actually even take the race to Glashütte, home of the Union Glashütte watch factory. As an Official Partner of the event for the sixth time this year, the race is familiar territory for the brand, and a special gift will be included with this timepiece: an additional stainless steel case-back, adorned with a map of Germany, with the state of Saxony specially highlighted. The Noramis Date Deutschland Klassik 2021 Limited Edition is available from selected specialist outlets, in a limitededition box, for €1980.00 (recommended retail price).
