At the eagerly awaited Phillips spring auction, held in Geneva on 13 May 2018, the only 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” watch ever made in a steel case went under the hammer for an unbeatable price of CHF 852,500 (US$ 852,414; € 713,627; incl. buyer’s premium). This is the highest result at auction that a Lange wristwatch has ever achieved.

The unique piece was dedicated to company founder Walter Lange, who passed away in 2017. Its special features include a jumping sweep-seconds mechanism, black enamel dial segment and stainless-steel case.

All proceeds from the sale of the watch will go to the Children Action Foundation. The Swiss-based aid organisation helps promote the physical and emotional well-being of disadvantaged children and young people in eight countries around the globe.

Alongside the one-off steel version, limited editions of the 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” are also available in white gold (145 watches), pink gold (90 watches) and yellow gold (27 watches). These will go on sale in autumn.

The number of watches available in each limited edition refers to an important date in Lange’s history: 145 years passed between 7 December 1845, when the company was first founded by Ferdinand Adolph Lange, and 7 December 1990, the date it was re-established by his great-grandson Walter Lange.

The number of watches available in the limited pink-gold edition refers to the year 1990. And finally, another 27 years passed before the special edition was presented in honour of Walter Lange on 7 December 2017.

Just as Abraham-Louis Breguet had invented the tourbillon to meet the technical constraints facing marine chronometers, De Bethune invented its own version to suit the new dynamic of wristwatches. Today, a wristworn timepiece endure considerably more intense ‘torture’ than were marine chronometer’s in Breguet’s day. Changes of position are swift and random and the brutal kinetic forces to which watch mechanisms are subjected deserves close attention.

All of which explains why the DB25 Starry Varius Tourbillon combines horological refinement with a technical feat. Its key characteristics include:

•    A mechanical in-house DB2109V4 movement equipped with De Bethune’s latest titanium balance wheel (featuring white gold inserts), entirely optimized for temperature changes and air penetration. Regulated via the De Bethune balance spring with its patented flat terminal curve maintaining a perfect centre of gravity;

•    An oscillator operating at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations/hour enabling the 63-part tourbillon to achieve astonishing accuracy on the wrist corresponding to +/-1 second per day. Weighing in at just 0.18 grams, it’s one of the fastest and lightest tourbillons in the entire watch industry.

•    Jumping seconds ensuring high-precision reading and consisting of two coaxially mounted seconds (fourth) wheels and a double pallet lever with four ruby pallets

•    An original 42mm case in polished titanium, with perfectly integrated lugs ensuring ideal comfort on the wrist;

•    A blued titanium and gold stamped dial personalised according to a given date or geographical location. Crafting using the traditional gold leaf guilding method enhanced by laser beam micro milling, a Milky Way pattern joins the De Bethune constellation.
