Handover of the certificates from Dr. Robert Surma (SEACOTEC) to Arno Gabel and Simone Richter for the SINN watches 103 Ti IFR, 103 Ti UTC IFR and 857 UTC VFR at FH Aachen, 24th June 2016.

For the first time in decades, a new German watch standard was published in March 2016: DIN 8330 Horology - Aviator watches. In June, the first watches in the world were tested and certified by Hamburg-based SEACOTEC. In this first run, the models 103 Ti IFR, 103 Ti UTC IFR and 857 UTC VFR from Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH successfully fulfilled the strict test criteria. Special confirmation was received from Dr Robert Surma, Managing Director of SEACOTEC, on 24 June at Aachen University of Applied Sciences.

In the run-up to this certification process, Sinn Spezialuhren reconfigured these three timepieces with regard to the requirements of the DIN 8330 Horology - Aviator watches. This primarily involved ensuring compliance with the functional and design guidelines. One of the aims was also to further enhance readability of the dial in order to help the wearer focus even better on the features critical for flight manoeuvres.

2.
Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                           BIG FOTO

The basis for the DIN 8330 Horology - Aviator watches is the TESTAF (technical standard for pilot watches) released in 2012. TESTAF ensures that a pilot watch meets all modern-day requirements during flight operations in accordance with visual and instrument flight rules and is qualified for professional use to the highest level. It was developed on the initiative of Sinn Spezialuhren and the Faculty of Aerospace Technology at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (FH).

3.

In 2013, the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), again at the request of Sinn Spezialuhren, resolved to establish a working group for pilot watches to develop a new standard for pilot watches based on the TESTAF standard. In addition to Sinn Spezialuhren, other members of the working group included Aachen University of Applied Sciences and DNV GL (formerly Germanischer Lloyd), Lufthansa Cargo, Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter), Stowa, Laco and Glashütte Original. The draft version of the new DIN 8330 Horology - Aviator watches was passed in October 2015 and it came into force in March 2016.

4.

German industrial standards command a high level of respect both nationally and internationally, and represent the very highest level of quality. Thanks to the DIN 8330 Horology - Aviator watches, we hope that pilot watches will once again be defined as watches offering special functional and technical features. The DIN-certified watches are geared towards fully assuming the functions of the instruments for time measurement in aircraft and helicopters in the event of outages or suspected failures. After all, the DIN standard takes the uncompromisingly high demands placed on aircraft and helicopter equipment and applies them to wristwatches.

5.
Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                           BIG FOTO

The DIN 8330 Horology - Aviator watches means that the tests already devised for TESTAF are standardised, precise, systematic and up to date. In the same way as the DIN 8306 standard for diver’s watches, it defines the requirements and test criteria for reliable, functional and safe pilot watches and highlights what a pilot watch needs to be able to do and the strains it has to be able to withstand.

6.
Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                           BIG FOTO

This includes fast, clear readability of the dial both during the day and at night, the ability to operate the watch even while wearing pilot gloves, temperature changes, impact load and centrifugal force, as well as accuracy not only at room temperature but also at ranges of between –15°C and +55°C. In addition, the DIN standard also defines more precise criteria, including for vibration resistance, magnetic field protection, resistance to liquids commonly encountered in the aviation industry (fuel, lubricants, cleaning fluids and de-icer) and compatibility with night-vision equipment. It also serves to expand the range of watches that are able to adhere to it in line with TESTAF – for example, by incorporating quartz or distinctly practice-oriented requirements in terms of the permissible magnetic signature of a pilot watch. As a result, the DIN-certified watches not only mean increased safety in the air but also increased suitability for everyday use, going far beyond the shock-resistant and waterproof characteristics of standard watches.

7.
Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                           BIG FOTO

With its support for the TESTAF and DIN 8330 Horology - Aviator watches initiatives, Sinn Spezialuhren underlines its aspiration to create functional, high-quality and high-tech watches. For the German watchmaking industry, the new standard for pilot watches provides major impetus to maintain and expand on its leading role in this segment among the international competition.

Melissa Arnott first American woman conquered Mount Everest without oxygen

ALPINA Watches ambassadress
Melissa Arnot becomes
the first American woman to summit Mount
Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen

Professional American climber and Alpina Watches Ambassador, Melissa Arnot became the first American woman to summit the Everest and survive the descent without supplemental oxygen on May 23rd, 2016. Climbing the 29,035 foot peak's northeast ridge from Tibet, the expedition marked the sixth Everest summit for Melissa Arnot.

Melissa Arnot has made her life about exploring the beautiful mountains of the world. She is passionate about climbing and pushing her own limits. A professional mountain guide, working internationally since 2004, Melissa has stood on top of many of the worlds most stunning peaks alongside clients who reached their dreams thanks to the alpinist. It is the motivation of her customers which inspires her to push herself and achieve her own goals.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                           BIG FOTO

Melissa had been trying to conquer the Everest without oxygen for years. She came incredibly close in 2013 when she and her climbing partner, Tshering Dorje Sherpa, made it to 27,900 feet, where they encountered an unresponsive Sherpa.

They remained to assist him for an hour. By the time they continued their ascent, Melissa was too cold to safely proceed without supplemental oxygen. She also travelled to Nepal to attempt an ascent in 2015, but the catastrophic April 25th earthquake ended the climbing season early.

On May 23rd, 2016 Melissa Arnot has finally achieved the goals she had set herself and been working hard on for years.

She commented on her ascent "I never anticipated that I would be lucky enough to summit once, let alone six times. Climbing Everest without supplemental oxygen has been a goal of mine for a long time. When you succeed at reaching your goal, it makes you reflect on the hard days, the work and lessons I've learned along the way. I'm incredibly fortunate to have this experience."

Ascending to the 29,029-foot summit of Everest requires supplemental oxygen for the vast majority of climbers. Less than 200 out of 4,000 climbers who have climbed the Everest have done it without breathing bottled oxygen. Above 26,000 feet, in what's known as "the death zone" the human body can no longer acclimatize to the altitude. In order to function at this elevation, most people need to use tanks of supplemental oxygen in order to maintain circulation, stay warm, and maintain mental and motor skills.

In 1988, Lydia Bradley, from New Zealand, became the first woman to climb the Everest without oxygen. Since then, six other women have achieved this, including Carla Perez, from Ecuador. Arnot, considered America's best high-altitude female climber, has added her name to that elite's list, which makes her the seventh woman ever to climb Everest without supplemental oxygen.

Melissa Arnot has been wearing the Alpina Horological Smartwatch during the challenge to monitor her activity and sleep. She commented "I use the Horological Smartwatch as a safety tool in the mountains. Knowing my own data helps me better understand what I need to do to push myself to be better."

Her next challenge?

Melissa Arnot will be attempting to climb the highest peak in all 50 states in 50 days this summer. She will embark on the 50 Peaks challenge from approximately June 30th to August 20th, 2016.

About G-SHOCK
CASIO’s shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch is synonymous with toughness, born from the developer Mr. Ibe’s dream of ‘creating a watch that never breaks’. Over 200 handmade samples were created and tested to destruction until finally in 1983 the first, now iconic G-SHOCK hit the streets of Japan and began to establish itself as ‘the toughest watch of all time’. Each watch encompasses the 7 elements; electric shock resistance, gravity resistance, low temperature resistance, vibration resistance, water resistance, shock resistance and toughness. The watch is packed with Casio innovations and technologies to prevent it from suffering direct shock; this includes internal components protected with urethane and suspended timekeeping modules inside the watch structure. Since its launch, G-SHOCK has continued to evolve, continuing to support on Mr. Ibe’s mantra “never, never give up”.

The timepiece, limited to 1,500 watches, marks the tenth special edition to be launched by the Schaffhausen-based luxury watchmaker as part of its commitment to Laureus Sport for Good. The winning design from last year’s IWC children’s drawing competition is engraved on the case back. This special engraving is a reminder that a portion of the proceeds from sales goes to Laureus to help support its social projects.

Since 2006, IWC Schaffhausen has been supporting the foundation on an annual basis by launching a special watch in aid of the cause. “Our cooperation with Laureus forms one of the cornerstones of our commitment to social responsibility. The foundation, and its ambassadors from the world of professional sport, are tirelessly and passionately dedicated to improving society. I am proud that we have been able to support this important and necessary work for the tenth year running with a special edition, summarizes Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

The hour indices are complemented by 12 diamonds, which combine with the blue alligator leather strap from Santoni to give the timepiece a very elegant overall look. With a case measuring 37 millimetres in diameter, this watch is also suitable for watch lovers with slender wrists. It is driven by the automatic 35800-calibre movement with a power reserve of 42 hours.

A CHILDREN’S DRAWING ADORNS THE CASE

In addition to their distinctive blue colour, another characteristic feature of the Laureus special editions is the engraving on the case back. Each year, IWC organizes a drawing competition for children and adolescents in the context of the foundation’s projects. An expert jury then reviews all the entries to select the winning design to be engraved on the back of the watch.

For the tenth special edition in this series, the jury chose the drawing by 16-year-old Eleni Partakki from Cyprus. Her drawing on the competition theme “Time for Sport” shows girls and boys playing with a ball. Eleni Partakki is a participant of Peace Players International Cyprus (PPI), a project that actively encourages Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot boys and girls living in the divided Cyprus to play basketball together.
