ARNOLD & SON – DBG Skeleton Gold Edition

ARNOLD & SONInstrument DBG Skeleton Rose Gold 44 mm Limited Edition

Instrument Collection
BASELWORLD 2017

A contemporary and open interpretation of a unique
Dual-Time (GMT) watch: the DBG Skeleton.

Arnold & Son unveils a new rendition of its unique DBG dual-time (GMT) timepiece, the DBG Skeleton. An acronym for “double balance” and “GMT”, the DBG Skeleton – a part of the Instrument Collection – references the precise chronometers built by John Arnold and his son. With a new skeletonized execution, the DBG Skeleton showcases Arnold & Son’s watchmaking prowess as well as attention to aesthetic details with the newly developed manufacture A&S1309 calibre, which has been conceived, designed and manufactured entirely in-house.

Skeleton clocks and watches have been popular for centuries. The painstaking process of skeletonization involves reducing the framework – the plates, bridges and bars, as well as the dial – and the mechanical parts – mainly the wheel train – to a minimum by removing metal that is not a functional or structural requirement. The result is an unimpeded view of the watch’s inner workings and its many parts. In the case of DBG Skeleton, it reveals exquisite artistic detail, from the blued screws to the Côtes de Genève stripes and satin finish running across the bridges and edges of the dial.

A masterpiece of perfect symmetry, the DBG Skeleton features two separate time displays, each driven by its own barrel and gear train with its own escapement and balance, now entirely visible thanks to its openworked execution. This highly unusual technical specification permits the two displays to be set independently of each other. Although it is a standard feature of watches displaying two or more time zones for the hour hands to be set to different times, being able to set the minute hand as well opens up other possibilities.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It means, for instance, that the display can be set to show the precise time in zones that differ from Greenwich Mean Time by a fraction of an hour, such as a quarter or a half. In addition, a subdial at 12 o’clock shows the equation of the two time zones on a 24-hour basis. This enables the wearer to see the time difference between the two zones and also to ascertain whether it is day or night in the second zone. Both time zones share a common permanent seconds in the shape of the long slender hand emanating from the centre of the dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Watches with a double barrel and escapement have a tradition going back many years in horology but are rarely found today. Historically referred to as a “captain’s watch”, the principle is ideally suited to the Arnold & Son’s instrument line because a separate barrel/gear train and balance/escapement enable the watch to house different complications without having one influencing the accuracy of the other by draining its energy. It is therefore perfectly adapted to be used for a second time zone, as in the DBG Skeleton.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

No less impressive than the watch’s technical features is its aesthetic appeal, and in particular its symmetry, which is largely determined by the positioning of the elements in the dual movement, visible from both sides of the watch. The entire movement was designed so as to enhance its visual appeal when skeletonized.

The view from the back reveals a pleasingly balanced arrangement of open bridges, barrels and gear trains. From the front, and highlighted against a backdrop of Côtes de Genève stripes on the lower half of the dial, are two triple-armed balances secured in position by the two balance cocks, which face one another and fuse together to create a circle. The open dials featuring Arabic numerals for one time zone and Roman numerals for the other are made of “smoked” metal-treated sapphire crystals, allowing both transparency as well as legibility.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Completing the overall sense of balance are the two crowns, one in the conventional position at 3 o’clock, the other at 9. The two mainsprings are both wound using the crown on the right. However, the time in each of the two selected time zones is set using its own crown, which ensures that neither of the zones is moved or changed inadvertently. The time zone on the left is set using the crown at 9 o’clock and the time zone on the right by the crown at 3 o’clock.

The DBG Skeleton is available in a Limited Edition of 30 timepieces.

The Manero PowerReserve is an authentic manufacture product. Its centerpiece is the CFB A1011 caliber automatic movement. It belongs to the CFB A1000 movement family, entirely designed as well as developed by Carl F. Bucherer, and first presented in 2008.

Its special features include the peripheral oscillating weight winding in both directions, allowing the movement a power reserve of at least 55 hours – or more than two full days – when fully wound.

The remaining power reserve is shown in a semicircular display at 3 o’clock.

Unique dials

This analog power reserve display is kept in visual balance with the digital weekday display at 9 o’clock and complemented by a big date and small seconds. This design gives the Manero PowerReserve a unique and unmistakable look. It has so far been available in silver and subtle black.

Carl F. Bucherer is now launching two special colored dials – one in blue and one in green. Instead of offering a uniform color, the shade varies continuously, from a deep vivid shade on the edge to a brilliant light color in the center.

This soft dégradé color on the dials is achieved by a highly intricate process, producing quite literally the color highlights of the watchmaking industry.

With its high-performance engine and timeless sporty look, this legendary chronograph flies high the banner of a human-driven adventure brimming with thrills and technical feats. For the third year running, the Swiss brand is partnering one of the most prestigious European gatherings of prestigious cars: the “Tour Auto Optic 2000”. On this occasion, Zenith will pay tribute to the classic cars competing in the event by unveiling an exclusive watch featuring elegant bodywork, powerful engine and tricolour accents: the Chronomaster El Primero Open Tour Auto Edition. First as always to reach the finish line, this high-octane beast roars at a speed of 36,000 vibrations per hour, proudly flaunting the precision of the legendary El Primero 4061 automatic chronograph calibre!

Speed, performance, endurance… and cult bodywork

Like a car bonnet raised to display state-of-the-art mechanics, the famous 11 o’clock dial opening reveals the beating heart of this 282-part COSC chronometer-certified movement – reliably driving central hours and minutes hands, chronograph and tachymeter functions, as well as a a tenth-of-a-second display, while ensuring a 50-hour power reserve.

This high-performance ‘engine’ is housed inside the impressive bodywork of a 42 mm-diameter brushed steel case, topped by a slender polished bezel framing the slate grey dial decked out in vertical blue-white-red vertical stripes – a reference to the tricolour French rally banner picked up in several design details.

VOUTILAINEN – “Scintillante” Unique Piece

VOUTILAINENCurrentScintillante” White Gold Edition Unique Piece 2017

The intention behind this timekeeper was to endow a creation in the great watchmaking tradition with the innovative character of a luxurious jewellery piece. The choice of autumnal hues is reminiscent of a walk in the woods when leaves cover the ground with their many colours. 423 gemstones decorate this piece with 9.65 carats of sapphires and 0.55 carat of F-G if-vvs diamonds.

The middle part featuring a medley of round stones of different diameters distributed at random in a snow setting has been enhanced by 131 navette cut, pear cut, oval or round stones of varying sizes and colours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The challenge presented by the lugs was to respect the specific geometry which gives Voutilainen timepieces their unique identity while still retaining their distinctive curved shape. Hence the choice of the invisible setting technique, using stones cut specifically for this purpose, with a rounded top to obtain a smooth shape and scissor cut culets, which impart an exceptional sparkle to the 36 rubies.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The bezel also features 58 closed set rubies with scissor cut culets and half rounded tops. The dial is a prowess of micro-machining with 12 indexes in navette cut rubies, orange and yellow sapphires set from below, circled by 84 diamonds in a paved setting with an engine-turned and grey enamelled central rosace.

The crown is set with a closed ruby cabochon. The buckle mirrors the sides of the middle part with 101 sapphires and rubies of varying sizes and diameters.

Octo Tourbillon Sapphire – Transparent Complexity

BASELWORLD 2017

Ours is an age of transparency. This philosophy of knowledge and light has driven Bulgari to explore a new dimension of which the latest expression, named Octo Tourbillon Sapphire, epitomises the quest for balance and beauty.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This spectacular creation offers a new interpretation of the formal purity of the octagon. The eight-sided geometrical figure, conveying a wealth of cultural and spiritual symbolism, has been regarded as a source of perfection since time immemorial, both in Antiquity and during the Renaissance. In the wake of various formal variations on the Octo theme, it reinvents itself in 2017 with this new case distinguished by its modern, urban proportions

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The new case, unveiled with the Octo Roma line, is naturally inspired by the motifs adorning the Basilica of Maxentius. The Roman roots of Bulgari, a jewellery Maison endowed with skills admired for more than 130 years, cannot be concealed. As always at Bulgari, there is no question of separating form and substance. The exercise of modelling shapes and seeking ideal equilibrium in design are not undertaken for their own sake, but always as a means of matching functionality. Likewise, efficiency is not sought for the sake of mere pride in performance. Everything is first and foremost about balance and beauty.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The formal purity of this exceptional watch is now dedicated to expressing a new watchmaking vision: allowing light to flood in so as to showcase mechanism through a beautifully modernistic and innovative approach.

An original and spectacular architecture

With its transparent case-back and dial, this spectacular 44mm-diameter timepiece made of titanium with a black Diamond Like Carbon (D.L.C.) treatment, offers enthusiasts a full visual immersion into its inner workings. The mechanical manual-winding flying tourbillon movement, Caliber BVL 206, appears at the heart of the watch with 11 black DLC-coated bridges adorned with green bars of ITR2 – a single composite material laden with carbon nanotube particles and a hardness comparable to a metal - and SLN, a high-tech luminescent material enabling the watch to give off at night all the light it has received during the daytime.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The bridges forming the hour-markers are an entirely original feature. They therefore serve to bear and hold the movement in place, while also acting as functional elements for reading off the hours and minutes, as well as decorative features contributing to the singular identity of the watch. In addition, the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire incorporates a clever development relating to its time-setting operations: pressing the crown displays a red dot in a tiny aperture at 3 o’clock, thereby signalling that the time may be set by simply turning the crown. Once the operation is complete, another press causes the dot to vanish and locks the time-setting mechanism.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For less informed connoisseurs, this model thus also provides a sophisticated expression of horological excellence, seemingly coming to life beneath the gaze of the person observing it, thanks to the regular and fascinating beat of the tourbillon. Its daring and luminous decoration also makes it a particularly fascinating example of contemporary design.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Attired in a highly on-trend, resolutely Italian shade of black, this watch is secured to the wrist by a matching black alligator leather strap with a folding clasp, featuring a classic appearance concealing a rubber lining that ensures perfect comfort on the wrist.

With the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire, Bulgari is continuing its personal definition of horological excellence. A definition characterised by perfect transparency.
