Inspiration of contemporary mechanical watchmaking

Spearheading the Maurice Lacroix Manufacture, the Masterpiece collection strikes a clever balance between technology, tradition and modernist esthetics. The anatomy of the ML134 skeleton movement is proudly showcased through the sapphire crystal case back. Its components are manufactured and skeletonized with special care and attention, and each component is individually polished. The bridges and disks and the wheels and pinions of the mechanism are thus on full view, perfectly finished down to the smallest detail.

Hypnotized by the movement’s intricacy, the light bounces off the sharp, luminous hours and minutes hands before plunging into the depths of the skeleton. The multi-level effect is accentuated by the snailed architecture of the bottom plate, and the contrast between the black screws and the gemstones.

The skeletonized openwork allows for the gears, the escapement, the balance and the column wheel, a feature of all the finest chronographs, to be admired. The counters, including a 60-minute counter, have hands shaped like skeletal disks which resemble the gears of the movement, while the time indicators are applied to the sapphire crystal dial.

The structure of the Chronographe Squelette transforms inorganic matter into a living and exciting mechanism that displays each of its Manufacture-crafted components with pride. Four variations reveal their individual characters, whether classic or sporty, but always unique in their kind. The design of this metallic piece of watchmaking art is an appropriate icon for a brand that has dared to create an elegant yet edgy collection. Compromise does not form part of Maurice Lacroix's vocabulary.

The inspiration of contemporary mechanical watchmaking

An avant-garde design housed within a diameter of 45 mm. A skeleton that shapes time. A Manufacture –made mechanism, the ML 106-7 caliber. This new instrument for the measurement of short time intervals deserves the utmost respect. Its precise mechanics, for which a patent has been filed, and openwork design, which displays and thus authenticates the movement, are the cornerstones of an undeniably contemporary collection. Offering a new take on the skeleton watch, which had already been fully redesigned in 2007 with the Masterpiece Squelette, this model looks like being a worthy successor.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...              BIG FOTO

Protected by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on both sides, the manually wound movement is proudly on display. Within this maze, the workings of the skeletal structure enjoy a refined, streamlined effect and have been reduced to the bare essentials. Hypnotized by the movement’s intricacy, the light brushes past the dusky seconds hand, before bouncing off the sharp, luminous spurs of the hours and minutes hands. Having pierced through the slate-gray metallic sapphire dial, with its applied time indicators, it comes to rest on the chronograph counters, intrigued by the presence of a 60-minute counter.

It then follows the movement of the counter’s hands which, shaped like skeletal discs, resemble the gears of the movement. It then ricochets off the snailed architecture and black screws of the bottom plate, before being drawn into the depths of this compelling time machine. Once inside, it tames the escapement, grazes across the golden gears, acquaints itself with the column wheel and caresses the rubies. Then, in a flash, it slips through the sapphire-crystal case-back, powered by the oscillations of a well-concealed, black balance that blends into its surroundings until almost invisible. The structure of the Le Chronographe Squelette transforms inorganic matter into a living and exciting mechanism that displays each of its Manufacture-crafted components with pride. The design of this metallic sculpture is an appropriate icon for a brand that has dared to create an elegant yet edgy collection most definitely anchored in the 21st century.

The Gargarin Tourbillon, a limited edition of just 50 pieces in total, was developed and manufactured completely in-house. It celebrates Yuri Garagarin's historic exploit when, on the 12th of April 1961, he became the first man in space and the first to successfully orbit the earth and return safely to earth.

The dial of the Gagarin Tourbillon is hand-engraved in solid gold with the colour of the oceans either in galvanic blue or black, with a scintillating outer dial in synthetic black diamond. An integral magnifying glass ensures that all details of the dial and tourbillon can be fully appreciated. The movement is fully developed and manufactured in-house.

The flying tourbillon orbits anticlockwise (east was the direction of the flight) around the dial in 108 minutes (the duration of Gagarin's flight) and appears to be support by an elegantly curved arm which was inspired by the by the large (25 m) commemorative statue at Gagarin’s landing site near Engels. The letters VOSTOK (meaning east and the name of Gagarin's capsule) features vertically around the tourbillon cage.

Eberhard & Co. - Scafodat 500

Eberhard & Co. - Scafodat 500

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Scafodat is the name of the diving-watch collection for professional use; it resumes and actualises the Eberhard & Co.’s tradition in sport watches with technical features. The ingenuity of its production and the careful selection of the materials make Scafodat water-resistant down to 500 m.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Scafodat is characterised by such interesting technical details as the big crown located at 4 o'clock, equipped with a special security device. The crown activates the inner rotating flange, protected by a non-reflecting sapphire glass, which is especially useful for indicating diving times on a sexagesimal basis. The security valve is fitted on the middle part. It works automatically and sees to it that helium escapes in the decompression phase.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Scafodat comes in steel; it has a Swiss ETA mechanical automatic movement and screw-in crown. The caseback is locked by screws, and an individual feature of it is the traditional seahorse image that was inspired by the original design registered in 1958.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

The black dials have triangular indexes warranting high-grade readability both in the classical and sportive versions.

Scafodat is available with the special Chicane bracelet in steel with an innovative system to lengthen it (Patented) and the Déclic deployment clasp (Patented), or with an ergonomic rubber strap devised for optimum wearing comfort.

ARNOLD & SON - TE8 Métiers d’Art I Tourbillon Limited Edition

ARNOLD & SONTE8 Métiers d’Art I Tourbillon Limited Edition NEW

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

True to its English watchmaking and handcraft heritage, Arnold & Son unveils the TE8 Métiers d'Art I, limited to only eight exclusive timepieces. Inspired by the pocket watches made during the earlier part of John Arnold's life for King George III and the royal court, the latest addition to the Arnold & Son Royal Collection is an eloquent expression of elegance and sophistication in the inimitable English style and demonstrates the brand's traditional prowess in the classical decorative arts.

The tourbillon, one of the most elegant complications in the world of horology, has played a crucial role in Arnold & Son's history. An exceptional watchmaker, John Arnold was an active participant in one of the most extraordinary partnerships in the world of innovative horology. Indeed, both he and A.-L. Breguet worked closely, sharing both their knowledge and passion. Evidence of their partnership is A.-L. Breguet's first ever tourbillon mounted in John Arnold's No. 11 movement, a watch that can be found today in London's British Museum.

What sets Arnold & Son's new Tourbillon TE8 esthetically and technically apart is its unique "English" design: the barrel bridge has a ¾ wave-shape, the tourbillon and motion-work bridges are triangular, and even the wheels are shaped with a distinctive three-spoke design. This same design cue can also be found on the tourbillon cage and the barrel bridge as well.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...  BIG FOTO

When compared to more conventional tourbillons found today, the TE8 model is said to be "inverted", that is to say most technical elements and visually interesting features are shown on the dial side, when those would normally be hidden on the reverse of the dial. Other typically English technical idiosyncrasies will seduce even the most demanding watch connoisseurs.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...  BIG FOTO

Take, for instance, the symmetrical layout of the movement; to achieve such a feat requires overcoming a number of technical challenges. Thus the barrel spring and the tourbillon cage are centered along the watch's longitudinal axis. When examining the winding system and the gear train, one notes the traditional construction, which uses wheels with long and narrow spokes known as wolf's teeth, used to improve the smoothness of the overall movement.

Calibre: A&S8000
Exclusive Arnold & Son mechanical tourbillon movement, hand-Wound, 19 jewels, diameter 32.6 mm, thickness 6.25 mm, power reserve 80 h, 21'600 vibrations/h
Movement decoration: hand-engraved nickel silver movement, rhodium treated bridges and NAC grey treated main plate with Haute Horlogerie finishing: manually chamfered bridges with polished edges, hand-engraved, fine circular graining, screwed gold chatons, mirror-polished tourbillon cage and bridge, screws with bevelled and mirror-polished heads

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...  BIG FOTO

Each single TE8 Métiers d'Art I is hand-engraved by Arnold & Son's own master engraver, who went as far as to create a new engraving pattern solely for this special edition. This new pattern is composed of complex geometrical elements arising from the center of the movement. The engraving of this masterpiece is particularly painstaking as the movement is made of German Silver and not usual brass. Due to the hardness of German Silver, the engraver must pay great attention not to slip off and constantly sharpen his tools, as their wear and tear is very high.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...  BIG FOTO

Hand-engraving is a traditional art form that involves the use of hardened steel tools called burins in combination with other special tools. These create cuts, lines and texturing that build up entire images or, as in the case of the TE8 Métiers d'Art I, a beautiful hand-engraved pattern on the barrel bridge and on the back of the main plate, bringing a breathtaking richness of detail to an already exceptional tourbillion timepiece.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...  BIG FOTO

.

It goes without saying that every finishing touch on this striking piece has been done by hand by Arnold & Son's master watchmakers, thus fulfilling the highest standards of Haute Horlogerie finish and bringing more brilliance and depth to each element of the movement.

Chopard - L.U.C Tourbillon Only Watch 2013 Edition

CHOPARD - L.U.C Tourbillon Only Watch 2013 Edition

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

For Only Watch 2013, Chopard has created a unique L.U.C. Tourbillon in platinum with gold movement bridges featuring a form of relief engraving native to Fleurier, known as Fleurisanne.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

For the 2013 edition of Only Watch, a biennial charity watch auction dedicated to fund the research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Chopard unveils a unique L.U.C Tourbillon model featuring movement bridges adorned with relief or “filet” engravings also known as Fleurisanne engraving – a highly distinctive and now almost extinct traditional skill typical of the Neuchâtel village of Fleurier.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

An historical speciality of the village of Fleurier where the Chopard Manufacture has been established since 1996, hand-crafted, “filet” or Fleurisanne engraving is an artistic craft that has almost died out despite a glorious past in which it contributed to the reputation of the watchmakers from this area and the success the watches enjoyed as far afield as China. This highly distinctive and time-consuming art consists of relief-engraving decorative techniques on metal parts, generally gold movement bridges. Its specific nature stems from the fact that it does not involve engraving a motif as such but rather sculpting or ‘sparing’ it by hollowing out the material around it so as to make it stand out. The technique calls for total mastery of the tool and an extremely meticulous approach resulting in pieces that are truly unique in that each motif is entirely hand-crafted.

Perpetuating manual skills

The House of Chopard, which has shown a longstanding commitment to training the next generation of the watch industry, is deeply attached to perpetuating ancient skills, encouraging specialists in its decorative workshops to recapture this engraving technique in order to revive a local tradition. In 2010, Chopard’s 150th anniversary celebrations included the unveiling of the first 15-piece limited series of L.U.C Tourbillon watches featuring bridges adorned with floral motifs.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

An exceptional one-of-a-kind model for Only Watch

For Only Watch 2013, Chopard has once again chosen to use this Fleurisanne engraving technique to personalise the movement of an exceptional one-of-a-kind model in which the different elements vividly testify to the extreme concern for detail that Chopard devotes to its watch creations.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

This L.U.C Tourbillon Only Watch 2013 Edition is graced with a rhodiumed 18-carat white gold hand-engraved dial bearing the coat-of-arms of the Principality of Monaco surrounded by a DNA molecule – a graphic reminder of the cause to which the Only Watch project is devoted. Clothed in a 43 mm-diameter titanium case with contrasting polished and brushed surfaces, the L.U.C 02.17-L Manufacture movement is also decorated with a DNA molecule on the bridge side, crafted using the Fleurisanne engraving technique.

Every bit as aesthetically fascinating as it is technically sophisticated, this precious timepiece boasts a 9-day power reserve thanks to Chopard’s patented Quattro® technology and is certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). Vulcain - 50's Presidents Watch «Edition France»

VULCAIN - 50's Presidents  Watch «Edition France» NEW

The Manufacture Vulcain pays tribute to France in a 50-pieces limited edition of its famous alarm timepiece, the 50s Presidents’ Watch. A fine way of celebrating the long-established ties between the Swiss brand and the land of luxury, elegance and refinement.
France has always held a special place in Vulcain’s history since it was founded in 1858. Creations by the Manufacture soon achieved impressive success on this market. In 1889, at the World’s Fair held in Paris at the foot of the recently erected Eiffel Tower, Vulcain attracted attention with its rich range of simple or complicated pocket-watches. These included the “La Vallée de l’Arve” Grande Complication model with grand strike, minute repeater, perpetual calendar and moon phases that won a bronze medal.

France also played a key role in the birth of the Cricket calibre that earned Vulcain international fame. In 1943, at a time when Vulcain’s Managing Director Robert Dittisheim was seeking to develop the first genuinely functional wristwatch capable of awakening even the deepest sleeper, French physicist Paul Langevin paid him a visit in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
During a stroll through the garden, the latter assured him that of a tiny creature like the cricket could make a sound that was audible from a distance of 30 metres, a small case housing a complex mechanism must be able to match such a performance. Buoyed by this scientific support, Robert Dittisheim pursued his research that was to lead in 1947 to the launch of the calibre with twin calibres (one for the movement and the other for the alarm) named the Cricket as a nod to the insect’s strident song.

The Cricket watch appealed to many prominent statesmen, including Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson – a fact that earned it the famous moniker as “The watch of Presidents” or “The Presidents’ Watch”. It was also a great success in France, even starring on the wrist of Eddie Constantine in Votre dévoué Blake, a film directed by Jean Laviron and released in 1954. Since Vulcain’s return to the forefront of the watchmaking scene, the French market has always been among the leading followers of the brand and of its new models. French retailers have also proven extremely active in supporting this renewal, and the Manufacture is keenly aware of the daily significance of their backing.

A STYLISH LIMITED SERIES

In homage to France and to the enthusiasm for the brand shown by French customers, Vulcain is innovating by introducing its first ever watch specifically dedicated to a nation. This 50-piece limited edition of the iconic 50s Presidents’ Watch features a 42 mm steel case housing the legendary mechanical manually-wound Cricket V-16 alarm movement equipped with the brand-patented Exactomatic system ensuring improved rating regularity on the wrist. Particular care has been lavished on the polished and satin-brushed finish of the case that lends a chic and vintage touch. The sunburst silver-toned dial with applied hour-markers is distinguished by its aura of elegant understatement expressed through hours, minutes and seconds hands along with a date window at 6 o’clock. Finally, the owner of this limited-edition timepiece can precisely adjust the alarm time thanks to a central hand tipped with a black arrow gliding across the graduated scale around the outer rim of the dial.

The case-back is engraved with the name of the watch, the individual series number as well as a crown of laurels – a symbol of strength, of victory and accomplishment – as well as of peace, knowledge and creativity. One also notes the choice of the colour blue for the Vulcain logo, the sweep seconds hand and the alarm markings. The sapphire crystal window provides an admirable view of the refined movement finishing (Côtes de Genève, anthracite treatment, blued screws and openworked ratchet-wheel), topped by the V for Vulcain. Each of the watches in this special edition comes with its individual certificate.

ATELIER DU BRACELET PARISIEN - ABP
Paying tribute to French expertise, tradition and excellence, the Manufacture Vulcain has chosen to associate with the famous ABP company located in Paris on the Marché-Saint-Honoré. “Leather artisan, time machine, zoo or travel agency”: the Atelier du Bracelet Parisien (ABP) is all of that rolled into one.

Above all, it is a firm dedicated to hand craftsmanship. All the straps and other products are entirely made in the Parisian workshop. Enthusiasts can choose from a vast array of hides, colours, shapes, tanning processes and thicknesses. Each strap is thus entirely hand-crafted according to the most stringent quality criteria.
