In the intricate world of watchmaking, few complications evoke as much fascination as the tourbillon. For the uninitiated, a tourbillon is more than just a feature; it's a testament to watchmaking skill, a marvel of engineering and a symbol of luxury.

A tourbillon watch is a type of mechanical timepiece designed to improve accuracy by mitigating the effects of gravity. The escapement regulates the release of energy from the mainspring to the gear train, ensuring consistent movement of the hands, while the balance wheel oscillates to control the gears' speed.

Creating a tourbillon is no small feat. It requires an extraordinary level of precision, skill, and patience. Each component of the tourbillon mechanism is meticulously crafted, often by hand, and assembled with the utmost care. The entire assembly consists of many parts, all of which must work in perfect harmony.

THE BIRTH OF THE TOURBILLON

A tourbillon is a sophisticated mechanism found in high-end mechanical watches, conceived by the British watchmaker and inventor John Arnold, it was developed by his friend the Swiss-French watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet and patented by Breguet on 26 June 1801. Its primary purpose is to enhance timekeeping accuracy by addressing the effects of gravity on the watch's escapement.

The name “tourbillon” means “whirlwind” in French, a fitting description for the revolving mechanism at its heart. Breguet’s innovation was driven by the quest for greater accuracy.

At the time, pocket watches were the norm, often carried vertically in the pocket. This constant position caused gravitational forces to affect the balance wheel and escapement, leading to timing inaccuracies.

To combat this, Breguet devised a rotating cage that housed the escapement and balance wheel. By continuously rotating, the tourbillon averages out positional errors, significantly enhancing the watch’s accuracy.

This ingenious mechanism was a breakthrough in precision timekeeping and remains a cornerstone of high-end watchmaking.

THE TERRA NOVA DUAL-TIME TOURBILLON

The complex movement has been developed in collaboration with French, Swiss-based watchmaker Olivier Mory, using his tourbillon module to create a complication dedicated to travel and exploration. Our tourbillon has been intricately hand-assembled by our talented team of watchmakers at ‘The Wing’ in Henley-on-Thames.

OUR WATCHMAKING PHILOSOPHY

The simple connecting thread of British watchmaking is one born of practicality. Britain as an island nation relied heavily on maritime capability to connect itself with the world, to establish trading relationships, to explore the globe and to defend its shoreline.

The necessity to understand proximity is central to maritime excellence and to search for Longitude requires exacting and consistent timing. This is a watchmaking culture inherited from the practical necessity to reliably know what time it is and to understand your location when out in the wilds of the world.

This British watchmaking culture became part of the national spirit through a sense of adventure and curiosity.

H. MOSER & CIE. – STREAMLINER Minute Repeater Tourbillon Concept Blue Edition

H. MOSER & CIE.STREAMLINER Concept Minute Repeater Tourbillon Aqua Blue Enamel Dial Edition - 2024

 H. MOSER & CIE.: THE SYMPHONY OF TIME

With the Streamliner Concept Minute Repeater Tourbillon Blue Enamel model, H. Moser & Cie. is offering the queen of complications in a timeless case which is water-resistant to 5 ATM – a very rare feature! The Manufacture is spotlighting the minute repeater, extracting the piece's very essence and placing the complex mechanism for striking the hours, quarters and minutes on the dial.

The hammers and gongs twirl in a consummate ballet, accompanying the dance of the one-minute flying tourbillon positioned at 6 o'clock. Stripped of logos and indices, the Aqua Blue dial provides a stunning backdrop to this exquisite choreography, created from "Grand Feu" enamel on a base with a hammered texture. A sensory experience, an ode to beauty, this creation orchestrates the passage of time like the most beautiful music, making every second precious, on land and under water.

With the Streamliner Concept Minute Repeater Tourbillon Blue Enamel, H. Moser & Cie. presents one of the most traditional and romantic watch complications and combines it with a magnificent flying tourbillon performing a spinning waltz. Drawing attention to the minute repeater mechanism, it has taken the bold decision to position the two shaped gongs and the hammers on the dial side, in a brand-new design.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This involved overcoming many technical challenges. The gongs, in particular, which are on a single level in order to preserve the ergonomics of the piece, had to be curved so as not to encroach on the flying tourbillon and to respect the purity of design for which H. Moser & Cie. constantly strives, with the balanced proportions, fluid shapes and high-flying finishes characteristic of the Streamliner line. Extending these curves, the integrated steel bracelet is elegantly arced to follow the line of the wrist.

A great deal of work has gone into the cushion-shaped steel case to optimise the sound and achieve a perfect balance between volume, resonance and harmony. The case middle has been widened to the maximum in order to accommodate the movement while allowing enough space to create a soundbox.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This amplifies the chiming of hours, quarter-hours and minutes by two gongs, onto which fall two hammers that are raised based on information provided by different feeler-spindles. The case is water-resistant to 5 ATM, should the wearer succumb to the siren call of the mermaids to share the sweet melody of the minute repeater with the fishes!

At six o'clock, the one-minute flying tourbillon is visible behind a skeletonised bridge and appears to float weightlessly on the dial, which is crafted in "Grand Feu" enamel. Starting with a pattern engrained onto a gold base, as if hammered, four different colour pigments are washed, finely crushed, then applied to create an ombré effect. It took approximately one hour of careful work for the master enameller to painstakingly apply the pigments, adding them one by one so that the colours oxidise and meld together when heated in the furnace, without any pixellation.

A translucent "Grand Feu" enamel dial must be fired twelve times in total to create the signature H. Moser & Cie. fumé effect. Each dial is unique. The finish is remarkable; resolutely contemporary, with a particularly striking texture and an intense hue, christened Aqua Blue, that the Schaffhausen-based manufacture lets speak for itself, with no logo or indices. Displaying the hours and minutes, the three-dimensional hands are formed of two sections and feature inserts made from Globolight®, an innovative ceramic-based material which contains Super-LumiNova®. The minute hand is curved.

Powering this exceptional creation is the hand-wound HMC 905 calibre, a new movement that guarantees a power reserve of 90 hours. This beautiful piece features a contemporary anthracite grey finish and certain parts are skeletonised, opening up its stunning mechanism for all to admire. The model's codes rework a traditional aesthetic into an understated and minimalist style, adding the final touch of elegance to this disruptive new piece.
