The timepiece, limited to 1,500 watches, marks the tenth special edition to be launched by the Schaffhausen-based luxury watchmaker as part of its commitment to Laureus Sport for Good. The winning design from last year’s IWC children’s drawing competition is engraved on the case back. This special engraving is a reminder that a portion of the proceeds from sales goes to Laureus to help support its social projects.

Since 2006, IWC Schaffhausen has been supporting the foundation on an annual basis by launching a special watch in aid of the cause. “Our cooperation with Laureus forms one of the cornerstones of our commitment to social responsibility. The foundation, and its ambassadors from the world of professional sport, are tirelessly and passionately dedicated to improving society. I am proud that we have been able to support this important and necessary work for the tenth year running with a special edition, summarizes Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

This year, the timepiece of choice is a model from the Portofino family. The Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” (Ref. The hour indices are complemented by 12 diamonds, which combine with the blue alligator leather strap from Santoni to give the timepiece a very elegant overall look. With a case measuring 37 millimetres in diameter, this watch is also suitable for watch lovers with slender wrists. It is driven by the automatic 35800-calibre movement with a power reserve of 42 hours.

A CHILDREN’S DRAWING ADORNS THE CASE

In addition to their distinctive blue colour, another characteristic feature of the Laureus special editions is the engraving on the case back. Each year, IWC organizes a drawing competition for children and adolescents in the context of the foundation’s projects. An expert jury then reviews all the entries to select the winning design to be engraved on the back of the watch.

For the tenth special edition in this series, the jury chose the drawing by 16-year-old Eleni Partakki from Cyprus. Her drawing on the competition theme “Time for Sport” shows girls and boys playing with a ball. Eleni Partakki is a participant of Peace Players International Cyprus (PPI), a project that actively encourages Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot boys and girls living in the divided Cyprus to play basketball together.

For the first time ever, this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was held in Berlin. These internationally renowned awards have been presented annually in various categories ever since Laureus Sport for Good was founded in 2000. The winners are selected by the Laureus World Sports Academy, which currently consists of over 50 living legends from the sporting world, including American track and field athlete Edwin Moses and German figure skater Katarina Witt. The gala in Berlin was also attended by the prominent IWC brand ambassadors Nico Rosberg, Oliver Bierhoff and Alexei Nemow.

Ariadne Artiles makes a splash launching the new Oris El Hierro

ORIS Aquis El Hierro Limited Edition NEW

A deep calling

Ariadne Artiles makes a splash launching the new Oris El Hierro Limited Edition
At the beginning of June, Oris launched the El Hierro Limited Edition at a high-profile event that immersed specially invited guests, including Spanish model Ariadne Artiles, in both the new watch and the fascinating story behind it.

The watch is named after El Hierro, the most south-western of the Spanish-owned Canary Islands and the site of a submarine volcanic eruption that occurred in 2011. Through the El Hierro Limited Edition watch, Oris is supporting a research scholarship scheme run by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) at the Faculty of Marine Sciences at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

For the launch event, Oris hosted international and local journalists from watch and lifestyle publications, and special guests from the university and the council. Ariadne Artiles was born on Gran Canaria, and leant her support to the event as both a Canary Islander and an ardent supporter of marine conservation. ‘The ocean takes care of us,’ she said. ‘Let’s return the favour.’

Sales of the El Hierro Limited Edition will support the IEOs scholarship programme

The two-day event included a dive and an underwater sightseeing tour off the south coast of the island, which has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2000. The activities were spectacularly documented by the Spanish underwater photographer Francis Pérez, whose many awards include the gold medal he won at last year’s Our World Underwater international photography competition. Shots from the dive included images of Ariadne Artiles testing the El Hierro watch in the surroundings it was inspired by.

Hermes – Arceau Pocket La promenade de Platon White Gold

Hermès ARCEAU Pocket La promenade de Platon White Gold NEW

Hermès Horloger presents three pocket watches decorated according to the techniques of enamel miniature painting, Grand Feu enamelled associated with three-dimensional sculpture; engraving.

Echoing the Hermès theme for 2016 “Nature at full gallop”, the scenes presented on the cover of these three models are drawn from the silk scarf “La promenade de Platon” created by the artist Annie Faivre. This unusual ensemble unites enamel, interwoven microsculpture and engraving in a stroll through the heart of the philosopher’s much-loved gardens of Academus, depicted through three tableaus.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The rst portrayal plays on shades of brown. At the centre, a horse paws the ground, surrounded by luxurious foliage. Against this background, the scene crafted using the Grand Feu enamel miniature painting technique appears in light shades. Enamel miniature painting involves composing the motif in successive stages. The nuances are expressed through subtle differences of shade, touch after touch. Using a tiny brush, the enamel artist applies the coloured enamel diluted in oil or water. Each stage is marked by a ring in the kiln heated to more than 800°C so that the enamel melts and adheres to the white gold base. It takes more than 20 ring operations for the nal motif to appear.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The second tableau features a play on volumes and contrasts. The white gold base of the cover is coated with night blue Grand Feu enamel. It provides the backdrop for a decor carved from an extremely thin yellow gold plate. The horseman and his mount form the centre of the scene, surrounded by entwined branches. Each of them is individually positioned by hand in such a way that the overall result expresses the organic nature of the plant. This work of creating a volume effect calls for extremely precise expertise. It also requires great sensitivity in order to ensure that this new kind of weaving radiates a true sense of visual harmony. Once the arrangement is completed, the artisan accentuates certain details with tiny touches of paint.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The third and last scene stages the art of engraving. It associates the rose gold of the four central horses with the white gold of the background decor. The artist prepares the base by removing metal from the areas where the horses will be placed. The latter are cut out separately and added on to the main plate. The engraver then transforms these rough surfaces, individually hand-modelling each animal as well as the branches. To make the scene stand out, he hollows the edges by digger deeper ‘pockets’ around them. Fine hammering the inside of these recessed areas gives them a smooth, even appearance and a thin layer of metal is then applied to further enhance the contrasts.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The asymmetrical Arceau case is one of the Hermès watchmaking signatures. Inspired by a stirrup, its upper attachment evokes the shape of a horseshoe. Measuring 48 mm in diameter, it is crafted in white gold by the Hermès workshops along with the alligator cord strap, crafted in accordance with the historical expertise of the Maison. Its transparent case-back reveals the beating heart of the watch.

Each one-of-a-kind Arceau Pocket Promenade de Platon watch is driven by a Hermès H1837 movement crafted in Switzerland. This mechanical self-winding calibre powers the hours and minutes and its mainplate is adorned with snailed circular-graining, while the classic ‘sprinkling of Hs’ motif graces the oscillating weight and the balance bridge.

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS – TORPEDO Pirarta GMT

CUERVO Y SOBRINOSTORPEDO Pirarta GMT NEW

With Torpedo Pirata GMT, Cuervo y Sobrinos pays tribute to the rebellious and romantic side of the buccaneers.

The Cuervo y Sobrinos brand couldn’t miss the chance to draw a parallel between the historical past of its place of origin. Secret beaches, buried treasures: Caribbean islands such as Cuba, Tortuga and Santo Domingo were once a favourite hunting ground for famous pirates. Mirroring this spirit of freedom, daring and adventure, Cuervo y Sobrinos pays tribute to the rebellious and romantic side of the buccaneers.

All the parts of this new timepiece are clearly reminiscent of the brazenness of the great pirates: the case is in the shape of a cannon mouth while the lugs represent the bow of a ship plundering on the Caribbean Sea. The crown subtle design in the shape of the globe and the buckle recaptures the design of the lugs.

The watch can evolve over time by playing with various metals carefully chosen to reflect the pirate spirit. The GMT version is available in bronze with titanium, burnished steel in two versions with white or black dial.
