The Traditional Pilot Chronograph

The ‘wristwatch with double stopwatch’ (as it was originally known by the Bundeswehr – the German armed forces – during the 1960s), which was sold only in very limited quantities during the 1980s and early 1990s, is now one of the most sought-after collector’s watches in our company.

Company founder Helmut Sinn purchased phased-out inventories of the Bundeswehr (Heuer-Leonidas SA 1550 SG, shortened to Heuer 1550 SG) and sold these after reconditioning with, inter alia, added SINN lettering on the dial under the label ‘Bundeswehr Chronograph for Pilots’ as model 155 Bw. These impressive pilot watches were fitted with a Valjoux 230 hand-wound chronograph movement and a pilot’s bezel.

The design of the traditional 158 pilot chronograph is in keeping with its predecessor: the bead-blasted case with a diameter of 43 mm, the high-domed acrylic glass, a black, easy-to-use pilot’s bezel manufactured from anodised aluminium and a large, equally comfortable winding crown are distinctly reminiscent of our traditional pilot chronographs.

For the movement, we placed our trust in the modern, automatic-calibre SW 510 from the Swiss manufacturer Sellita. This enables a horizontal bicompax division and central stopwatch-second display, true to the historic model, with the seconds display at 9 o’clock and the stopwatch minute display at 3 o’clock.

This movement also offers a date display at 6 o’clock. The stopwatch seconds and minutes hands are brilliant red. Optimum readability is also ensured in the dark, as the numerals, hour and minute hands are coated in luminous white. The 158 is resistant to low pressure and can withstand pressures of up to 10 bar.

A total of 500 of these traditional 158 pilot chronographs are being produced, each with an engraved limited-edition marking on the case back.

In 2020, Breguet adorns the dial of its Extra-Thin Self-Winding Tourbillon with a touch of deep blue, by using the traditional grand feu enamel technique. There are a limited number of artisans still capable of mastering this age-old process, which was dear to Abraham-Louis Breguet, as he appreciated the spotless aspect it conferred on watches.

Not surprising, given that he had revolutionised watchmaking aesthetics by ridding watches of heavy and superfluous decoration. Today, Breguet keeps this art alive with a workshop entirely dedicated to enamelling.

This new Classique Grandes Complications 5367 provides a beautifully simple interpretation of the tourbillon, which reigns supreme on a minimalist dial. The information has been deliberately pared down to essentials in order to give the mechanism the full attention it deserves.

Contrary to reference 5377 presented in 2013, this 2020 has no power-reserve indicator. In order to draw the gaze to the key element, Breguet has opted for a graphic hand-bevelled tourbillon bar, topped by a spinel.

Standing out against the blue background, the moon-tipped hands made of rhodium-plated steel guarantee perfect legibility while they sweep around a chapter ring bearing silvered Arabic numerals, stars, diamond shapes and fleur-de-lis.

The likewise Breguet hands strike a powerful contrast with the blue Grand Feu enamel, thereby ensuring perfect legibility of the hours and minutes. The chapter ring with Breguet Arabic numerals is off-centred at 11 o’clock and thus directly facing the tourbillon at 5 o’clock. This display layout is reminiscent of the watches created by A.-L. Breguet.

While the appearance of this Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique model is extremely understated on the front, its movement is nonetheless richly decorated. The bridges, barrel and oscillating weight are hand-engraved. Crafted in platinum for greater inertia, the latter rotates on the periphery of the calibre, thus providing a clearer view of the movement as well as ensuring its slimness.

The Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 measures a mere 7.45mm thick and its movement just 3mm. Calibre 581 powering this timepiece comprises a balance oscillating at a frequency of 4 Hz while maintaining a comfortable 80-hour power reserve. This distinctive performance is enabled by a “high-energy” barrel, whose patented construction serves to increase the number of coils of its spring and hence augment energy storage.

The new Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 with its “Grand Feu” enamel dial is available in rose gold or platinum versions, respectively fitted with a mahogany brown or blue alligator strap and both featuring a rhodium-plated movement.

Available exclusively at Breguet boutiques, this new release in platinum features a blue alligator leather strap.
