Parmigiani Fleurier has expanded its Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène range following the resounding success of this watch, launched in 2016, with two new models in rose gold.

These models display the moon phases thanks to a movement produced entirely in-house and set in a modern, refined rose gold case.

Rose Gold Down To The Finest Details

The Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène in rose gold features two dial versions: the first, in abyss blue, is adorned with a central lotus flower – a symbol of femininity.

This decoration is cut from mother of pearl and applied to the dial, from which it stands out 0.2 mm. The satin and polished finishes of the lace design create a play of light that beautifully showcases the quality of the workmanship.

The second dial is made from highly reflective white mother of pearl, and features a lotus flower in solid rose gold, echoing the indices and the case. On each dial version, the bezel is adorned with 76 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling ~0.52 carat.

The Lunar Dance Across The Dial

The russet moon of the Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène emulates the brilliance of the night sky. It is magnified thanks to its surface made up of craters — known as lunar seas — obtained by hand-applying successive layers of transfers. This watch offers a genuine embodiment of the moon on the wrist that disappears and emerges from wisps of cloud amidst its starry constellation.

The richness of the Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène resides in each of its individual details and its overall integrity. Decorative operations carried out by hand give it a tangible and unique value.

The Moon Phase Complication

The PF318 movement and its moon phase module is the 33rd movement created within the Parmigiani Fleurier manufactures. The moon phase's operating principle is based on a gear moved by the hour wheel, which rotates at half the speed of the gear.

The gear drives the moon disc every 24 hours via a flexible blade integrated in the centre of its wheel. A corrector at 9 o'clock enables the wearer to independently index the moon in relation to the day and date in order to match its phase to the geographic reference location.

The PF318 self-winding movement has a power reserve of 50 hours and excellent isochronism thanks to its two series-mounted barrels that regulate the rate

Visible through the watch's sapphire case back, this calibre is entirely circular-grained, decorated with Côtes de Genève and bevelled to the finest haute horlogerie standards customarily applied in the Parmigiani Fleurier manufacture.

Its two series-coupled barrels ensure 50 hours of autonomous and exceptionally regular operation. Its pendulum beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Comprised of 205 components, this calibre combines the display of hours, minutes, seconds and the date with the lunar phases.

Its moon-phase mechanism is driven by a gear set in motion by the hour wheel, which turns twice as slowly as the former does. Thus, once every 24 hours this gear drives the moon disk by means of a flexible blade integrated into the centre of its wheel.

GARRICK – Regulator Engine Turned Dial

GARRICKRegulator Engine Turned Dial Steel 42mm Limited Edition

Announcing A New Garrick Regulator
Once again, Garrick showcases fine British
craftsmanship with stylish aplomb.

Garrick, the Nofolk-based watchmaker, once again, showcases British craftsmanship by offering its popular 'Regulator' with a remarkable handcrafted dial. The dial is adorned with an intricate motif formed using a rose engine lathe, imbuing the surface with a wondrous depth and three-dimensional allure. The work is undertaken in Great Britain by a time-served artisan, reinforcing Garrick's belief that its home nation is a haven of peerless craftsmanship.

In 2017, Garrick released new versions of its existing Portsmouth, each endowed with an engine-turned dial, often referred to as a 'guilloché' dial. The dials, offered in a selection of colours, featured a fan-type pattern and evinced a traditional appearance.

Engine-turned dials are created using a rose-engine lathe. Different cams are used to influence the behaviour of the cutting-head which in turn infuses the dial surface with glorious patterns. While the lathe is referred to as an 'engine', no electrical or mechanical power is used, merely the careful application of hand pressure to a rotating wheel. The creation of each dial proves labour intensive but the resultant surface justifies the effort.

Now, Garrick is pleased to unveil a series of new engine-turned dials for its Regulator model. Whereas, the aforementioned Portsmouth dials appeared classical, the new Regulator dials bristle with modernity. The circular barleycorn motif emanates from the centre, steadily increasing in size, enriching the dial vista with a lustrous and dynamic appearance.

The separate indications of hours, minutes and seconds are presented in black and contrast beautifully with the silver hued dial. The movement is inverted with the balance wheel located at 10 o'clock. The openworked balance bridge allows the wearer to see the balance in flight, oscillating to and fro. A partial view of the centre wheel provides a reminder that the gear train sits just below the dial surface, efficiently transferring energy from the spring barrel.

With its fastidiously polished British case, expertly finished hand wound Unitas movement and engine-turned dial, this Garrick timepiece showcases superb craftsmanship. Indeed, there is nothing regular about the Garrick Regulator and its engine-turned dial.

Garrick timepieces are handcrafted in limited numbers by master watchmakers Craig Baird in our Norfolk workshop.
