LOUIS MOINET – SIDERALIS Evo Double Tourbillon Gold Edition

LOUIS MOINET SIDERALIS Evo Double Tourbillon Rose Gold Limited Edition

Sideralis by Louis Moinet - An interstellar
inverted double tourbillon

Sideralis, Louis Moinet’s interstellar double tourbillon, is back in orbit

In unveiling the Ateliers’ latest creation, Louis Moinet’s CEO Jean-Marie Schaller waxes lyrical – and that speaks volumes in itself.

Sideralis was a turning-point for us. It’s a highly technical piece, featuring a world first, and protected by two patents. It allows us to combine our astral theme with an exclusive complication, thus enhancing a dial full of life – one of our hallmarks at Louis Moinet. The lightness of the Sideralis EVO, and more particularly of its new outsize tourbillon cages, embodies this sense of space. The deep blue echoing the astral micro-painting reinforces an overall sense of coherence, illuminated by the new rose gold case – as if by sunlight itself.

EVO is the name of this new, very limited-edition version of Sideralis. It takes up the general concept of Sideralis in a skeletonised, openwork offering, made available here in rose gold.

To date, Sideralis is quite simply unparalleled anywhere else in the world of watchmaking, and is protected by two patent applications. Over and above purely technical considerations, Sideralis makes an unequivocal statement: Louis Moinet is perhaps the last fully-independent firm to be investing in new movements with the sole aim of inspiring awe among lovers of fine watches.

This unique approach is based on three special features that are the essence of Sideralis:

Sidereal – and staggering

Sideralis is structured around two especially extraordinary tourbillons:

Special feature number one

Both of these tourbillons are oversized, with cages measuring 14.9 mm – half as big again as the average. This is the largest assembly of two tourbillons ever to have existed. “Aside from our exacting chronometric standards, this approach adds a fascinating visual dimension to the watch; a touch of magic that we’ve decided to gift to lovers of fine watches, just so they can contemplate beauty and horological art in all its splendour,” explains Jean-Marie Schaller.

Special feature number two

The tourbillons rotate in opposite directions, driving the Sideralis complication: two discs, one atop the other, which also rotate in opposite directions, orchestrating the ballet of the stars on the time dial, and revealing a succession of tiny hand-painted vignettes. The discs depict the planet Mars, the Moon, and Mercury, one after the other.

Special feature number three

The two raised cages are large as life and wholly visible, revealing balance wheels with beautifully styled screws – and an absolutely incomparable aesthetic appearance.

Now, tourbillons move the planets

For the first time ever, a complication is driven by a double tourbillon: a time dial, situated at 12 o’clock, comprising two discs, one atop the other. The top one features a tiny hand-painted picture. This hand-crafted marvel depicts the universe and its constellations of stars and planets, painted one by one on a dark blue sidereal background. The animation completes one counter-clockwise rotation every 60 seconds.

At 12 o’clock on this upper disc there is a circular opening, through which can be glimpsed the three planets painted on the lower disc, seen to be rotating in the opposite direction at the same speed. The feature represents a wholly new conceptual and artistic approach.
Mars, Mercury and the Moon – physically present

Through the opening, the lower disc reveals the planet

Mars, the Moon, and Mercury in succession. “These three bodies have not been chosen at random,” says Jean-Marie Schaller. Each of the micro-paintings includes genuine dust from the heavenly body in question: a fragment of Mars, moon dust, and extremely rare fragments of the Rosetta Stone, whose scientific name is Sahara 99555. This stone has travelled across the universe to reach us: it’s the oldest known to mankind, believed by the scientific community to have come from Mercury and to be four and half billion years old. Fragments of meteorites from Mars, the Moon and Sahara 99555 also appear on the lower disc, positioned between the planets, floating in the cosmos, or included in a hand-painted shooting star.”

The inverted double tourbillon, powering an exclusive complication, is an unprecedented innovation, with two patents pending to protect it. The Sideralis caliber is also fully exclusive to Louis Moinet, mounted on a hand-painted aventurine dial that matches the universe depicted on the time disc.

LONGINES – Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch 1927-2017 - 90th Anniversary

LONGINESHERITAGE Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch 1927-2017 - 90th Anniversary Edition

Longines launches The Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch 90th Anniversary to commemorate Charles Lindbergh’s amazing feat

This year, Longines is celebrating the 90th anniversary of the first ever non-stop solo transatlantic flight, which was flown by Charles Lindbergh and timed by the Swiss watchmaker. For the occasion, the brand is presenting 90 timepieces in a numbered and limited edition of its hour angle watch, which was designed in partnership with the famed aviator following his historic flight. This exceptional titanium and steel timepiece is intended for those who are passionate about history, adventure and watchmaking.

New York, May 20, 1927, 7:52 a.m., the “Spirit of St. Louis” leaves Roosevelt Airport. Its destination: Le Bourget airport near Paris. At the controls: a young American pilot named Charles A. Lindbergh. Thirty-three and a half hours later, Lindbergh lands at Le Bourget after completing the first ever non-stop solo transatlantic flight. It was a historic feat. As official timekeeper for the World Air Sports Federation, Longines contributed to the homologation of this prowess by timing Lindbergh’s flight and adding it to the list of aviation records.

Shortly thereafter, a close collaboration between the aviator and the brand produced the Longines Hour Angle watch, a veritable icon in the history of the Swiss watchmaker. Designed by Charles Lindbergh himself in partnership with Longines, this watch allows for accurate determination of the longitude during long-distance flights. As a result, pilots and navigators can find their geographic location quickly, efficiently and with great accuracy.

Today, Longines commemorates the 90th Anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s amazing feat and of its timekeeping, by releasing The Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch 90th Anniversary, a new edition of the legendary timepiece in a numbered series limited to 90 watches. Equally as impressive as the original timepiece, this model measures 47.5 mm, which makes it easier to read and manipulate in the dark and when subjected to the vibrations that were common to aircraft of the era.

It will draw the attention of admirers when worn on the wrist of today’s modern adventurers. Equipped with a rotating bezel that allows for correction of the equation of time and a rotating central dial that allows for synchronization to the second, this timepiece indicates the hour angle in degrees and in minutes of arc in addition to indicating hours, minutes and seconds. The understated brushed silver dial displays the time on a “railtrack” minute circle with painted Roman numerals, and features a 180° scale for calculating the longitude.

The synchronization of the second hand with a radio time signal is accomplished using the galvanic black rotating central dial, while the black PVD steel rotating bezel allows for daily variations in the time equation to be taken into account. A L699 automatic calibre is housed in the titanium case of the 90th Anniversary Lindbergh Hour Angle watch, which is adorned with a large steel crown that is easy to wind or set, even with gloved fingers. The brown leather aviator-type strap equipped with an extension that allows the watch to be attached to an oversized pilot’s jacket puts the finishing touch on this exceptional timepiece.
