Special limited edition crowns anniversary year

The 1815
TOURBILLON is the first A. Lange & Söhne watch that combines a stop-seconds device for the tourbillon and the ZERO-RESET mechanism. At the close of the anniversary year that commemorates the 200th birthday of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, this paragon of precision timekeeping is being presented in a limited HANDWERKSKUNST edition featuring extraordinary dial and movement decorations.

Handwerkskunst, the German word for "artisanship", is an attribute of distinction that A. Lange & Söhne has been using since 2011 to identify special limited-edition watches whose dials and movements are endowed with rare finissage and engraving techniques. On 7 December 2015, the eminent Saxon manufactory is presenting the 1815 TOURBILLON HANDWERKSKUNST, a new model that not only stands out with exceptional decorative elements, but also unites two patented mechanisms.

The ZERO-RESET function launched in 1997 by A. Lange & Söhne is paired with the stop-seconds device for the tourbillon that was introduced in 2008. Together, these mechanisms make it possible to stop and set the timepiece with one-second accuracy.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....              BIG FOTO

Limited to 30 watches, the special-edition model is available in a pink-gold case with a diameter of 39.5 millimetres. A. Lange & Söhne's fifth HANDWERKSKUNST edition is a precious homage to Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the great Saxon watchmaking pioneer whose 200th birthday is being memorialised this year.

The main difference versus the model presented in 2014 is the dial. It is made of black-rhodiumed pink gold and decorated with elegant tremblage engraving. The engraver who uses this technique sculpts the material with a specially crafted lining burin to achieve a uniform, fine granular structure.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....              FOTO

The relief elements on the dial, including the prominent arced brand logo and the numerals, are later polished to a mirror gloss and contrast prominently against the dark background. An aperture in the dial reveals the large one-minute tourbillon. The tourbillon bridge and the upper part of the cage are black-polished: this is one of the most elaborate and time-consuming finissage techniques.

Mechanical precision is reflected in every detail of the lavishly decorated L102.1 manufacture calibre. The elegantly curved shape of the newly designed three-quarter plate is a special hallmark. Thanks to generous cut-outs, the tourbillon with the patented stop mechanism is easily visible from the movement side as well, as are the spring barrel and parts of the wheel train.

The grained surface of the German silver plate is inspired by historic pocket watches. Bevel-polishing reentrant angles is a particular challenge. This task can only be performed manually with a sharp, specially designed tool. The fourth-wheel bridge is pierced to provide a better view of the tourbillon.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....              BIG FOTO

Just like the plate and the caseback, it is endowed with artistic engravings. The diamond endstone of the tourbillon vibrantly accentuates the movement decorations.

CORUM – Heritage Bubble Op Art

CORUM Heritage Bubble Op Art Series Limited Edition NEW

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                    BIG FOTO

Introduced in 2000, the Corum Bubble became an instant hit among the lovers of oversized watches, thanks to its radically large case and an even larger crystal. Earlier this year, Corum revisited this iconic design by launching the Heritage Bubble. With this new model, exactly 15 years later, the Bubble made a triumphal return, sealing its place as a major creation of Corum. Two new models are now added to the Op Art Series, launched this year.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                    BIG FOTO

A remarkable 8 mm high, this sapphire crystal is one of the largest of any watch. It acts as a lens, both magnifying and distorting the dial. The partnership with the industrial designer Nicolas Le Moigne, gave birth to two new designs. The patterns are inspired from Op Art, also called optical art, originally introduced by Victor Vasarely, the French artist of Hungarian origin.

Op Art created static patterns that gave an impression of movement or surprising and contradictory perspectives. Nicolas Le Moigne took these codes, while optimizing 3D effects to an extremely reduced scale. The result is as vibrant as the effervescent energy emanating from the Bubble.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                    BIG FOTO

The dial of the Bubble Sphere2 is aptly named, since it is pictured as the continuation of the dome-shaped crystal sapphire, giving the illusion of a sphere in a sphere. The lines that deftly traverse the dial and glass are full part of this optical effect.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                    BIG FOTO

With the second model of the Op Art series, the designer makes us travel with a dial akin to symbolized scenery, full of landforms, in a perfectly controlled alternation of highs and lows. Furrows and shadows effects, imitating the surface of moving water, give their name to the Bubble Drop.

This arresting Op Art models will be fitted only to a pair of limited edition, each made in an exclusive run of just 350 pieces. The first one is housed in a brass dial and a PVD-coated case, both in blue-tone. The hands are in the same shade and treated with Super-LumiNova.

Using the same materials, the second model is entirely brown PVD coated. The hands follow this monochromatic statement, while breaking with the dial.

The two new timepieces are fitted with rubber straps topped with leather. And each is fitted with a buckle matching the case finish.

ARNOLD &SON – Royal HM Perpetual Moon Blue Guilloché Dial

ARNOLD & SON Royal Collection HM Perpetual Moon Steel case Blue Guilloché Dial NEW

Demonstrating its rich British history and quality Swiss craftsmanship, Arnold & Son unveils a new version the HM Perpetual Moon with a steel case and a blue guilloché dial. The HM Perpetual Moon is a testament to Arnold & Son’s tradition of watches with astronomical indications. The HM Perpetual Moon, with one of the biggest moonphase apertures on the market, is part of the Arnold & Son Royal Collection.

The Royal Collection is inspired by the timepieces created in the early part of John Arnold’s life, and pays tribute to the watches he produced for King George III and members of the royal court. The timepieces in the Royal Collection demonstrate the brand’s prowess in traditional watchmaking and classical decorative arts.

George III of the United Kingdom

The sophisticated HM Perpetual Moon is, indeed, a superb example of Arnold & Son’s technical and artistic excellence. From the inside out, this new timepiece – with rich blue guilloché moon disc and engraved moon – surprises and delights.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                 BIG FOTO

It houses the exclusive Arnold & Son mechanical hand-wound movement, the calibre A&S1512. This calibre was especially developed for this model with the objective of offering a uniquely precise, big and three-dimensional moonphase. The calibre is also equipped with a double barrel to yield 90 hours of power reserve.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                 BIG FOTO

The HM Perpetual Moon offers one of the most accurate moon phases on the market, with only one day’s deviation every 122 years – at which point a single push on the corrector will keep it in sync for another 122 years.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                 BIG FOTO

The exceptional perpetual moonphase indication of this watch is a marvel in many ways. From the aesthetic side, the 29 mm moonphase disc, which runs from 10 to 2 o'clock on the dial, reveals one of the largest moons on the market - with a diameter of 11.2 mm for the moon alone. Additionally, this large moon is one of the most visually stunning recreations of the moon because it is a three-dimensional sculptured moon that was first hand-engraved and then duplicated for the series. The sculptured moon is then inserted into the guilloché disc.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                 BIG FOTO

From the technical side, in addition to the HM Perpetual Moon being so precise, it is also an intriguing complication in that it is not simply a module added to the movement, but, in fact, is fully integrated into the calibre. The watch also has a unique easy-to-set feature thanks to the ingenious addition of a second moon indication installed at the back of the movement. This second moon display, visible via a transparent case back, features a graduated dial and a pointer hand that allows for a more exact setting.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                 BIG FOTO

The multiple technological advancements in the calibre make this timepiece truly outstanding. To further underscore that, the entire rhodium treated nickel-silver movement features hand finishing indicative of the finest Haute Horlogerie timepieces, including manually chamfered bridges with polished edges, fine circular graining with polished edges and Côtes de Genève rayonnantes, and blued screws. The timepiece naturally features an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and case back to view the meticulous details.

Taking the HM Perpetual Moon to higher heights, Arnold & Son offers three very distinct versions for today's discerning clientele. The Elegant model is created in 18-carat red gold with an incredi ble blue guilloché dial in a stylized sunray pattern, blue guilloché moon disc with golden stars and the hand-engraved moon.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                 BIG FOTO

The HM Perpetual moon measures 42 mm in diameter in its classically elegant stainless steel case. Viewed from the side, the housing is stepped and tapers from top to bottom, the widest section accommodating the extra-large glass with the lower part narrowing to fit snugly on the wrist. Each is finished with an exquisite hand-stitched alligator strap. In all, the HM Perpetual moon is a beguiling work of technical mastery and fine art.

A. Lange & Sohne – Walter Lange receives the Order of Merit

A. Lange & Söhne Walter Lange receives the Order of Merit

A reward for courage and commitment
Walter Lange receives the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

The founder of Lange Uhren GmbH, Walter Lange, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (First Class) by German President Joachim Gauck in recognition of his services to re-establishing Saxony's watchmaking industry. The award was presented by Stanislaw Tillich, Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony, on 25 November at Saxony's State Chancellery in Dresden.

In his laudatory speech, the Minister-President of Saxony described Walter Lange as an entrepreneur who had shown extraordinary commitment to ensuring that German precision watchmaking found a new home in Glashütte. Thanks to his outstanding contribution, the town had once again become a unique watchmaking centre, said Mr Tillich. "Walter Lange's work is one of the greatest entrepreneurial success stories since German reunification," explained the jury in their statement, adding that, when he re-established his ancestors' legacy, Lange – who is now 91 years old – did not only consider his own company, but always took into account the welfare of the watchmakers, their families and, in particular, his home town of Glashütte as well.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....              BIG FOTO

Following the reunification of Germany, Walter Lange seized the historic opportunity to make his vision – producing the world's best watches in Saxony – a reality and to give the people in his home region a new outlook. By founding the company and registering A. Lange & Söhne as an international brand, he initiated the renaissance of Saxony's fine watchmaking tradition that had been started by his great-grandfather in 1845.

Nowadays, the exclusive timepieces created by A. Lange & Söhne are highly coveted by connoisseurs and collectors in more than 60 countries. Thanks to Walter Lange's brave initiative and his forward-looking business strategy, his initial team of 15 has grown into a company with a staff of over 700, making it the largest employer in the town. With around a dozen watchmakers and suppliers who have now created more than 1700 jobs, the town of Glashütte is once again the centre of the German watchmaking industry.

Sinn – 1800 S DAMASZENER Limited Edition

Sinn Spezialuhren 1800 S DAMASZENER Limited Edition NEW

Where functionality defines design and every little detail serves to highlight the innovative technology at play, this is where Sinn Spezialuhren is at work. Since our establishment in 1961, we focused continuously on high-quality mechanical watches combining a traditional sense of quality with advanced solutions.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

This has repeatedly resulted in the use of totally new watchmaking materials. In 1995, we presented the first watch made of 22-carat yellow gold with a material hardness equal to that of stainless steel (220 HV). In 2005, German Submarine Steel was used for the first time in diving watches.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

Our 1800 S model made of Damascus steel (ger.: Damaszener Stahl) seamlessly follows on from this by rendering the highly traditional material appropriate for watch cases – without forsaking but rather enhancing its special allure.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

The watch thus displays a uniqueness that is immediately reflected in its design and appearance. In order to bring the characteristics textures of Damascus steel to the fore – an organic pattern of alternating bands of light and dark – the dial and central part of the case are forged from a complete steel block rather than designed as separate components, as is customary.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

The result is rather remarkable: for the Damascus pattern on the dial continues across the entire case to create a fascinating and impressive whole. Thanks to the use of TEGIMENT Technology and the application of an additional Black Hard Coating, we have succeeded in combining functionality with high quality. The Black Hard Coating displays the pattern in a subtle, exquisite light and ensures good readability and a masculine-looking watch.

Damascus steel has fascinated humankind for centuries. It gained its legendary reputation above all in the making of swords, knives and blades. Damascus steel is a combination of at least two different types of steel, layered to create the aforesaid surface design. The traditional art of making Damascus steel is very elaborate and portrays a unique blend of craftsmanship and application. During production, the different types of steel are layered and forge-welded together.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

The piece is then forged, halved while in a glowing state and layered together again. Experts refer to this as ‘folding’. By combining soft and hard steels, a new kind of steel is created, one which displays properties of both. In the final stage of production, the Damascus pattern is made visible through surface etching. The steels are dissolved to varying extents by acid, thus forming the typical light and dark nuances.

In this respect, it is important to know that the use of Damascus steel in the making of watch cases is particularly challenging with regard to corrosion resistance. In order to find a professional solution, we adapt recent developments in materials engineering. For the case of our 1800 S DAMASZENER model, the different steels used are combined using powder metallurgy and, in this sense, technically optimised.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

Also during production of the 1800 S DAMASZENER, the layered structure is made visible through final surface etching, which gives the material its characteristic appearance. Each watch thus becomes an extraordinary and unique timepiece, as the flow of lines cannot be physically manipulated.
