The Masterpiece Gravity 40th features many of the remarkable attributes syno-nymous with Maurice Lacroix including a manufacture movement, a silicium as-sortment, an off-centre hour and minutes display, striking use of colour, all stylishly presented in an eye-catching POWER-LITE® case.

POWERLITE® is incredibly robust, durable and light. The anthracite colour of the case is created using an anodisation process. The benefits POWERLITE® offers made a compelling case for its selection by the de- sign team at Maurice Lacroix and a wor- thy material for this important timepiece in the company’s history.

CAN YOU RESIST GRAVITY?

The new Masterpiece Gravity 40th is joined by two fur- ther limited editions, delivered in a choice of classical and contemporary executions, each limited to 250 pieces.

The Masterpiece Gravity inspires and challenges conven- tion. It is an innovative timepiece, at the cutting-edge of progress, which does not merely convey time but emotio- nally engages with the wearer with creative expression. It presents its oscillator and assortment centre stage on the dial side of the watch. The spectacle of seeing the oscillator beating, along with the pallet lever moving, is mesmerising and emits an attractive force few can resist.

SILICIUM

The Masterpiece Gravity was the first timepiece to feature a fully silicium assortment. Developed in- house by Maurice Lacroix, it is a further example of the company’s forward thinking approach to watchmaking.

Maurice Lacroix’s Head of Movement Construction, Michel Vermot, in collaboration with Haute Ecole Arc, based in Le Locle, was the first person to develop and produce a complete assortment made in silicium.

Silicium, a self-lubricating, glass-like material, is three times lighter than steel. The low mass consumes less energy, is more accurate and does not require regular lubrication.

The frequency of the Maurice Lacroix automa- tic manufacture Calibre ML230 is 18,000 vph (2.5Hz). It is a cadence that is ideally suited for silicium as it proves gentler to the glass-like subs- tance than those experienced in some higher os- cillating movements.

The brand has minimised the number of compo- nents to 188, avoiding unnecessary parts and, by default, providing a clean appearance and enhanced reliability.

Maurice Lacroix is, understandably, very proud to feature a complete assortment produced in sili- cium. The Calibre ML230 is its 13th manufacture movement, reaffirming the company’s know-how and technical progress.

STUNNING AESTHETICS

The Masterpiece Gravity 40th imparts the hour and minutes display on a blue lacquered, off-centre dial which is domed at its centre and secured with two mirror-polished screws. Diamond cut indexes and rho-dium plated hands exhibit cool refinement. Encircling this dial is a rhodium plated minute track. The vibrant use of colour is typical of Maurice Lacroix who has gained a reputation for selecting shades that deliver stunning aesthetics.

The sense of modernity is reinforced with the main bridges, positioned adjacent the hour and minutes dis-play, that have received an eye-catching sandblasted finish. Moreover, these bridges feature polished be-velled edges accentuating their extremities to comely effect. In contrast, four additional bridges, presented dial-side of the watch are rhodium finished and brushed. The screw sinks on these four bridges are sandblasted, providing a cohesive link to the main bridges.

The classical execution includes an off-centre hour and minutes display featuring a pure white lacquered dial, retained with two mirror-polished screws. Hours are marked with black Roman numerals, hands are gold plated and the minute track consists of blue and black markings. Adjacent the hour and minutes display, the surrounding canvas is decorated with circular Côtes de Genève motif.

For those seeking a more avant-garde form of expres-sion, the contemporary execution may be their prefer-red timepiece. In this instance, the off-centre hour and minutes display features a captivating black lacque-red dial. Hours are marked with diamond cut indexes which sparkle with a brilliant gleam and the hands are delivered in a matching rhodium finish. Framing the extremities of the dial is a flat rhodium plated mi-nute rail, featuring red and white markings. Adjacent the hour and minutes display, vertical Côtes de Ge-nève stripes, accentuated with black DLC treatment, provide a modern and highly attractive appearance.

The “glass-box” sapphire crystal is also domed and magnifies the oscillator and assortment, making them appear to sit high within the case and according a sublime three dimensional characteristic to the dial. A small seconds display, presented on a subdial par-tially projects over the disclosed balance assortment, masterfully exploiting depth and curving line.

Finally, the case back of the watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal, according a view of the automatic Calibre ML230.

A TRUE MASTERPIECE

Maurice Lacroix has shown over the last 40 years a remarkable ability to innovate, explore new technologies and create ingenious means of displaying time. The Masterpiece Gravity 40th wonderfully integrates several cutting-edge technologies in one true masterpiece.
With a dazzling array of qualities, the attraction of the Masterpiece Gravity should prove impossible to resist

Arnold & Son – Constant Force Tourbillon

ARNOLD & SON Royal Collection Constant Force Tourbillon Limited Edition NEW

Pre-BASELWORLD 2015

Arnold & Son pushes precision chronometry ever further with the Constant Force Tourbillon, featuring a patented constant force device with 60-second tourbillon and true beat seconds.

The symmetrical movement architecture of the Constant Force Tourbillon movement pays tribute to Arnold & Sons' historic marine chronometers. At the top, two visible mainspring barrels and the constant force device provide optimal power to the tourbillon at the bottom of the dial.

The Constant Force Tourbillon is part of the Royal Collection and, like every other model from Arnold & Son, features an in-house mechanical movement. John Arnold (1736-1793) was constantly searching for higher precision in his timepieces, as the more accurate the chronometer, the more precise the calculation of longitudinal (east/west) position at sea. Arnold and his son were the first to develop and produce technically superlative (but reasonably priced) marine chronometers in significant quantities.

Constant force is an essential element in the quest for higher precision because it is difficult regulating a consistent output, e.g. isochronal time when the power input from the mainspring is constantly changing. Imagine trying to drive a car at a consistent speed with an engine that continually varies its power output.

To maximize power consistency in the Constant Force Tourbillon, Arnold & Son began at the beginning, i.e. the mainspring barrel, as this is the source of the movement's power. Instead of using just one mainspring barrel, which would produce significantly different amounts of torque between fully wound and nearly empty, the Constant Force Tourbillon has two symmetrical barrels in series, visible dial side at 10:30 and 1:30. The first mainspring barrel alone powers the gear train, while the second barrel tops up the first whenever its torque output drops below optimal. This ensures that the power to the regulator flows as constantly as possible.

The Constant Force Tourbillon features a patented constant force mechanism. Instead of power from the mainspring feeding directly to the escapement/tourbillon, it charges a small hairspring which in turn releases a consistent amount of power to the escapement/tourbillon once each second. The device also drives the true-beat seconds hand (also known as jumping seconds or dead seconds), a highly cherished Arnold & Son complication. When the power from the mainspring drops below that required by the constant force mechanism, the movement stops rather than running at lower precision. The constant force device rotates once per minute in increments of one second, visually mirroring the rotation of the constantly rotating tourbillon cage. The bridges supporting the constant force regulator and tourbillon are also symmetrical, both horizontally with each other and vertically with the barrel bridges.

While the constant force mechanisms optimize precision with the movement in stable positions, the 60-second tourbillon averages out gravitational errors on the escapement by constantly rotating it through 360°. The difference between the rotating tourbillon and rotating constant force device is that the former turns continually while the latter steps in increments of one second.
