The Bathyscaphe is a legendary name at Blancpain. Three years after the 1953 debut of the original Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain introduced the Bathyscaphe as a smaller diameter diving watch alternative adapted to daily wear.

This entirely new column wheel controlled flyback chronograph movement runs at the high frequency of 5 HZ – 36'000vph, ideal for a chronograph, as each second is perfectly divided into 1/10th of a second intervals. The F385 is further distinguished by its use of silicon for the balance wheel spiral.

Because silicon is a-magnetic, its use provides the same degree of protection from magnetism as constructions which rely upon a soft iron inner case. However, whereas soft iron inner cases foreclose use of a clear case back, as the movement would be hidden, the F385’s use of silicon allows both protection from magnetism and view of the movement.

In common with all of the 33 new in-house calibers which Blancpain has introduced since 2006, the F385 has a freely sprung balance, with gold screws for fine regulation. Gold screw inertial regulation offers superior robustness and finer adjustment than the more common racket systems.

The F385 utilizes a vertical clutch for the engagement of the chronograph. Blancpain has been an industry pioneer in the development and refinement of vertical clutch chronographs. Unlike horizontal clutch systems used elsewhere, Blancpain’s vertical clutch guarantees flawless starting and operation of the chronograph. Horizontal clutch systems are prone to needle jumping upon starting and uneven movement of the chronograph seconds hand, both of which are avoided with Blancpain’s design.

Two other features of this new timepiece bring important functionality to the world of diving. Unlike most diving chronographs, which paradoxically forbid chronograph use underwater and require that the chronograph pushers be “locked down” when the watch is submerged, the Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback has been equipped with sealed chronograph pushers allowing use of the chronograph during dives to a depth of 300 meters.

 Second, the chronograph itself incorporates a flyback function. Whereas standard chronographs require three actuations of the pushers to time back to back events (one push to stop the first event, a second to return to zero and a third to start the second event), the flyback function greatly simplifies operation.

A single push of the return to zero pusher stops the first event, returns the timers to zero and restarts the timing for the second event. This is particularly useful for divers' decompression stops.

Aesthetically, the Ocean Commitment Bathyscaphe Flyback is housed in a gray ceramic case, with a ceramic crown and ceramic chronograph pushers and a unidirectional blue ceramic rotating bezel marked with liquid metal indexes. The blue color theme is carried over to the dial, which offers three subdials for the chronograph counters and small seconds display.

On the back of the watch, the movement and winding rotor are visible through the clear case back. The winding rotor has been specially decorated for this limited series bearing the logo for the Ocean Commitment.

It is held in a polished and vertically satin-finished aluminium case. The black crown as well as the case back are made of lightweight titanium. The timepiece features a special “CDC-SIWILAI” engraving with the symbols of the concept store as well as of the CDC on the back.

The blue dial is embellished with an artistic three-dimensional camouflage print that complements the eclectic blue of the whole watch. The hands come in blue steel with red luminescent material, while the JEANRICHARD logo and “Terrascope” lettering are held in classic white.

The Phoenix, a supernatural bird, was commonly referred to as the ‘King of Birds’ embodying the five virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity as well as being symbolic for the Empress. It was known never to harm either a single insect nor blade of grass, eating and drinking nothing but bamboo seeds and sweet spring water. The dragon has always appeared in a magical variety of forms; long or short bodied, small or gigantic in size. Its nature could be both secretive yet active, and it inhabited all areas of the universe from the heights above to the depths below. Since they were able to travel between the skies and earth, dragons were considered the mounts of heavenly deities. The Phoenix and Dragon are two of the ‘Four Supernatural Spirits’; therefore it is believed that seeing a Phoenix and Dragon together is symbolic for great fortuitousness and luck.

Created from 3N rose gold, these legendary figures inhabiting the interior of the movement are carved and incised entirely by hand. Special miniature tools needed to be made for the specific artistry required in the physical realization of these two creatures. To increase the realism of these special animals, a long and painstaking process of hand finished micro painting was executed, also including the unseen parts of these two marvelous entities.

The entire movement follows all the philosophies of Richard Mille with its baseplate of PVD treated titanium, double winding barrels and a power reserve of 48 hours, indicated by a red line between 10 and 11 o’clock. In the world of horology,the cases of Richard Mille watchesare currentlyconsidered as the most difficult to manufacture. This tripartite tonneau-shaped case is fully curved, which enables the watch to be ergonomic and comfortable, yet time consuming during its production and requiring a high level of quality control. These integral front and back curves are an essential part of the Richard Mille watchcaseand demand ultimate precision and accuracyfor their perfectexecution.
The front bezel and caseband have to be perfectly and delicately assembled to prevent the sapphires from any damage. The manufacturingspecifications requiredto achievethisrequiredone year of researchand development.The characteristic tonneau shape of the RM 57-01 requires no less than 47 stampingand 21 strikingoperations. The machining lasts 4 hours and 255 milling procedures are required to producea single RM 57-01 case with a further day spent on finishing which entails grinding, satin brushing and polishing.
The tripartite case is water-resistant to 50 meters thanks to two Nitril O-ring seals. It is assembled using 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and abrasion-resistant washers in 316L stainless steel.

Between 1993, the year of the first collection of watches not made exclusively for military use, and 1997, the year when the brand was acquired by the Richemont Group, Officine Panerai created just a few hundred watches which over the years have acquired an extraordinary value, becoming cult objects for many enthusiastic collectors. These timepieces illustrate the transformation which took place at that time of a tool-watch, known only by a few collectors, into a prominent brand of the international high quality sports watchmaking market.

Officine Panerai now presents a fascinating Special Edition Set (PAM000785) consisting of two models inspired by two of the watches most representative of the pre-Vendôme era, made to order in 1996 for the American actor Sylvester Stallone, a great enthusiast and spontaneous advocate of the brand, who was at the time involved in the film Daylight: the Luminor Black Seal and the Luminor Daylight.

These two watches, produced in limited editions of 500 units each, are now offered exclusively as part of the Set, the presentation of which is inspired by that of the pre-Vendôme Luminor: a box of pear wood which also contains a model of the human torpedo (Siluro a Lenta Corsa or Slow-speed torpedo) on a teak base and a rare publication about the military equipment of the special forces of the Royal Italian Navy, naturally including Panerai watches and instruments.

The case of the two Luminors, with a diameter of 44mm, has the shape and proportions created by Officine Panerai in 1993 to reinterpret the historic Luminor 1950 case: forms of great simplicity but with an aesthetically impact of remarkably solid and robust. The element which stands out is the iconic bridge device with pressure lever protecting the winding crown, helping to ensure the watch’s water-resistance to 30 bar (a depth of about 300 metres).

The two models are distinguished by the coating of the AISI 316L stainless steel case. The case of the Luminor Black Seal is covered by DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon), a layer of vaporised carbon with a diamond structure which adheres perfectly to the metal, giving it a black colour and ensuring toughness and resistance to corrosion, scratches and harsh wear. The closed back of the case is engraved with the inscription “Officine Panerai Firenze” and the OP logo.

Another difference between the two models is the design of the dial. That of the Luminor Daylight is white with numeric hour markers and a detailed minute track while the Luminor Black Seal has a black dial with numerals at only the cardinal points in.

 Both watches have the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock; another element taken from the past by Panerai which over the years has become a distinctive characteristic.

Although the design of the new Luminors is faithfully inspired by that of the watches of 1996, the technical content has changed dramatically: both have the hand-wound P.5000 calibre, a high-quality movement entirely designed and made in the Panerai manufacture at Neuchâtel.
