An encounter between Fine Watchmaking and fluid mechanics. One might say a utopia. Shattering all certainties, steamrollering conformity, the idea that led to the H1 was simple and consisted of two flexible reservoirs fixed to each end of a capillary. In one was an aqueous liquid filled with fluorescein, and in the other, a transparent viscous liquid. To keep them separate : the repulsive force of the molecules in each liquid, with a meniscus to mark the boundary between the two.

As the hours go by, the fluorescent liquid advances. The meniscus, in the shape of a half moon, marks the breaking point with the other fluid in the tube, indicating the time. At 18:00, the fluorescent liquid comes back to its original position, going backwards. The secret that gets the reservoirs going ? Two bellows made of a highly resistant, flexible electro-deposited alloy, each driven by a piston. And this is where watchmaking comes in to activate the system.

 A MECHANICAL MOVEMENT

TO ACTIVATE THE HYDRO SYSTEM

Orchestrated by Brino Moutarlier, alongside Jean-François Mojon and his Chronode SA team, a mechanical movement is situated in the upper part of the watch, and propels a cam, which pushes the piston and activates the bellows.

 The main challenge lay in finding an interface between the mechanical movement and the hydro system in a closed, waterproof circuit - a task further complicated by the limited space available to house them both. They had to be assembled separately to keep them independent, and then made to operate simultaneously. This is a highly delicate modular integration, which involves other constraints, such as the installation of the dial in two parts, through the sides.

The generously designed dial of the three- hand watch assures rapid and accurate readability. Even in murky waters the diver can still read the time thanks to a special luminous coating (Super-LumiNova), which glows light blue in the dark.

The black dial is well protected by a sapphire crystal almost 4 mm thick. In addition, a helium valve ensures that the gas escapes automatically without damaging the case when the diver is ascending and descending in the diving bell.

Striking Exterior 

The distinctive design of the Patravi ScubaTec leaves no doubt about its function as a diving watch. The glowing blue markers are emblematic of the sea, as are the markings on the first quarter of the bezel and the notch of the same color on the crown.

Shimmering with iridescent reflections, the dial of the Vintage 1945 Lady naturally represents the exquisite Art Deco-inspired design that is so characteristic of this collection. It is highlighted by a double curve that forms a convex dome, creating a regular and harmonious unity of volumes. The setting of 42 brilliant-cut diamonds at its center recalls the rail track minute display of the original models of the collection.

The Arabic numerals 3, 9 and 12 are clearly distinguished, while the date appears in a discreet aperture at 6 o’clock. Delicately shaped yet sturdy, the dauphine type hands have a diamond-finish surface that creates a darting interplay of reflections. The watchmaker reworks each hand by hand so as to curve it to match the inclination of the dial.

Flanked by its two lateral shafts, the steel case is delicately cambered. Each horn is set with 15 diamonds to form two dazzling rows of stones. At 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock two gadroons emphasize the lugs and give a structure to it as a whole. The case-back, secured by screws, is fitted with a sapphire crystal that affords a view of the movement’s oscillating weight, decorated with a tapestry motif. Technically and aesthetically outstanding, the caliber is among the smallest to be found in watchmaking, with its diameter of only 19.4 mm. Illustrating all of Girard-Perregaux’s savoir-faire and expertise, it offers hour, minute, and date functions.

The company expects to produce about 3 copies annually.
