 Project 28S – Unique Piece for Only Watch

Exclusively for the Only Watch Auction 2017, VOUTILAINEN is presenting a timepiece which breaks the boundaries between art and watchmaking.

The movement contains a proprietary sprung-balance system that ensures perfect timing of the watch according to strict tolerance criteria. The balance has four gold inertia-blocks to adjust the daily rate.

To equip this exceptional timepiece, a unique and very rare balance-spring system has been used. The outside is a typical Breguet overcoil, while the inner terminal follows the less common Grossmann principle.

The watch’s outstanding feature is its escapement; it is the first watch to present two escape-wheels in such a configuration. The escape-wheels provide a direct impulse to the balance through the roller/jewel. This escapement is extremely efficient and requires less energy than traditional lever escapements, offering gains in terms of longevity and stability in everyday use.

The sublimely elegant balance-cock offers an unobstructed view of the escapement and balance. It also allows the enthusiast to admire the synchronised movements of the escape-wheels. Finishing of the watch is of the very highest standard. The surfaces of pinions and wheels are totally flat and perfectly polished to exceptionally uniform tolerances. All finishing work on the main plate and bridges is carried out by hand to attain the best possible surface finish.

Only Watch Partnership

Now presenting its 7th Edition, Only Watch is a biennale auction of unique timepieces that has raised over 25 million Euros to date. Under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and following the initiative of Luc Pettavino, President of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies, Only Watch is an international watchmaking charity event.

All of the funds collected from the sale of the watches are donated in their entirety to scientific and medical research. The exclusive watches will embark on a world tour starting in the charity’s hometown of Monaco, and then continuing to Asia, the Gulf, the United States and Europe, before the final auction in Geneva on November 11th 2017.

A unique Voutilainen timepiece 

in the ”Métiers d’art” category

Presenting a watch « Triton and Mermaid » with an extraordinary double back boasting two exceptional craftsmanship engraving and enameling techniques, Kari Voutilainen participated in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève this year.
Watchmaker Kari Voutilainen proposes a timepiece with a 24-hour second time zone and retrograde power reserve indicator. The movement, designed and handcrafted, as well as the dial were produced in the master workshop. Crafted in German silver, the topflight mechanism comprises no less than 250 components and 28 jewels.

It cleverly allows the crown to adjust the second time zone so that it advances by the hour rather than rotating freely, thus maintaining accuracy with regard to local time. While the sapphire crystal makes it possible to admire the traditional finishing of the movement with Côtes de Genève decoration and hand-chamfering, the dial also boasts refined elegance. The GMT embraces the small seconds at 6; while the retrograde power reserve indicator is positioned at 12 o’clock.

“Never before have I produced such a complicated piece”. For Swiss master engraver Eddy Jaquet, production of this unique watch will remain forever in the forefront of his memory. In addition to the various engravings on the pivoting white gold lid (several layers of successively cut and sculpted precious metals), the Voutilainen Vingt-8 GMR which he handled also boasts another, equally demanding, decorative technique: enameling.

Specialist Inès Hamaguchi was responsible for the delicate enameling work that would create the aesthetic effect desired by Eddy Jaquet, a design with two silhouettes on both sides of the sea’s surface. While the traditional technique of champlevé enameling was called on to represent the sky and the sea foam, a unique, very complex method known as plique-à-jour was used to feature the sea itself in which a mermaid can be seen on both sides of the lid.

Originating in the Byzantine Empire during the 4th century, plique-a-jour did not appear in Western Europe until the end of the 13th century before almost disappearing entirely due to the complexity of the technique. It was revived at the end of the 19th century but remains extremely rare up to this day; only a few experts are masters of the technique.

This timepiece, thanks to the juxtaposition of the engraving and various enameling techniques, including the plique-à-jour as a decorative element, represents a benchmark in watchmaking.

While the two artists maintain a veil of secrecy surrounding the creative process - “an experimental approach”, they claim -, Eddy Jaquet and Inès Hamaguchi admit that a series of discussions between their two workshops in the Neuchâtel canton were necessary before arriving at the final result. A painstaking and patient joint effort to produce an unparalleled effect, close to stained glass, of both movement and depth.

Of the twelve Voutilainen Vingt-8 GMR pieces in the limited edition collection, only one watch will have an engraved and enameled lid, exceptional for the complexity of its manufacture.

VOUTILAINEN – Current “Scintillante” White Gold Edition – Unique Piece


The intention behind this timekeeper was to endow a creation in the great watchmaking tradition with the innovative character of a luxurious jewellery piece. The choice of autumnal hues is reminiscent of a walk in the woods when leaves cover the ground with their many colours. 423 gemstones decorate this piece with 9.65 carats of sapphires and 0.55 carat of F-G if-vvs diamonds.

The middle part featuring a medley of round stones of different diameters distributed at random in a snow setting has been enhanced by 131 navette cut, pear cut, oval or round stones of varying sizes and colours.

The challenge presented by the lugs was to respect the specific geometry which gives Voutilainen timepieces their unique identity while still retaining their distinctive curved shape. Hence the choice of the invisible setting technique, using stones cut specifically for this purpose, with a rounded top to obtain a smooth shape and scissor cut culets, which impart an exceptional sparkle to the 36 rubies.

The bezel also features 58 closed set rubies with scissor cut culets and half rounded tops. The dial is a prowess of micro-machining with 12 indexes in navette cut rubies, orange and yellow sapphires set from below, circled by 84 diamonds in a paved setting with an engine-turned and grey enamelled central rosace.

The crown is set with a closed ruby cabochon. The buckle mirrors the sides of the middle part with 101 sapphires and rubies of varying sizes and diameters.

The Vingt-8 ISO watch bears an original display of hours and minutes, functioning as follows:

• At the top of each hour, the minute hand overlaps the hour hand.
• On every half hour, the minute and hours hands are opposite.
• The circle of minutes turns at the same rate as the hour hand for easy reading.
• The angle between the hour hand and the minute hand remains the same regardless of the time.
• The position of the hour and minute hands, with respect to the other is always according to the minutes, whatever the hour is.

Telling time by looking at a wrist watch is a result of a System 1 activity: a glance suffices because the « code » is so deep and familiar that in an instant you know the time without having to think twice.

The Vingt-8 ISO counters this code; Conforming to Kahneman’s System 2 behavior. You can not read the time; You have to switch to System 2. It now creates a more intimate and reflective relationship with this watch – it takes a few seconds now to « know » the time; But you know the time « better » with the Vingt-8 ISO because your attention is keener. You definitely intellectual-have a deeper relationship with this watch Because System 1 is no longer modus operandi.

The in-house movement of the Twenty-Eight was designed, built, fabricated, finished and assembled in its entirety in Voutilainen workshop. The design and philosophy of the movement combines respect for longevity and precision with classical watchmaking tradition.

The movement has a very large scale manufactured in-house, allowing perfect regulation of the watch to within tolerances. To equip such an exceptional timepiece, a very rare and unique balance-spring system has been used. Phillips overcoil, while the internal curve uses the little known Grossmann curve.

The escapement makes the movement very special; This is the first watch to have two escapement wheels in such a configuration. The escapement wheels give a direct impulse to the balance through the impulse roller / jewel.

This escapement is extremely efficient and requires much less energy than traditional lifting escapements, offering benefits in terms of longevity and stability in day-to-day use. The balance-wheel bridge is sublimely elegant, offering an unimpeded view of the escapement and balance. It also allows the enthusiast to admire the synchronized movements of the escapement wheels.

The watch is finished to the highest standards. The surfaces of pinions and wheels are completely flat and highly polished to exceptionally uniform tolerances. All finishing work on the main plate and bridges is by hand to achieve the highest possible levels of surface finish. Screws and all steel parts are finished and polished by hand.
