To mark the Rugby World Cup 2019and celebrate its partnership with New Zealand’s national rugby team, TUDOR presents a black version of its Black Bay chronograph in a limited edition with the same number of timepieces as All Blacks players since the team’s creation. An additional model will be added every time a new player is selected.

One Player, One Watch

To celebrate the All Blacks legacy and mark the Rugby World Cup 2019 (RWC) as the team will defend its back-to-back champions title, TUDOR is launching the Black Bay Chrono Dark model, a new black version – matching the All Blacks’ famous jersey – of its chronograph, fitted with a Manufacture Calibre with column wheel and vertical clutch.

Unusually for TUDOR, the new model is a limited edition: a watch to pay tribute to every player who has been selected for New Zealand’s national rugby team from its creation in 1884 to the RWC 2019, or 1181 timepieces at the time of writing.

The number will be adjusted according to the final composition of the World Cup team. The series will grow over the coming years as new players join the ranks of the All Blacks.

Black Coating

The Black Bay Chrono Dark model features a characteristic satin-brushed steel bracelet for a matt effect, finished with a black PVD-treated coating. Directly derived from the thin-film technology originally developed by NASA for its various space programmes, PVD, or Physical Vapour Deposition, enables practically any inorganic material to be bonded with metals.

2/4 Of course, the colour choice is a reference to the All Blacks team that TUDOR has been supporting since 2017, reinforced by the presence of a special engraving on the case back indicating the serial number of each timepiece.

Manufacture Chronograph Calibre MT5813

Boasting a 70-hour power reserve, a silicon balance spring and a certification by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, the Manufacture chronograph Calibre MT5813 that drives the Black Bay Chrono Dark model is a high-performance movement.

TUDOR – HERITAGE Black Bay CHRONO S&G

TUDORHERITAGE Black Bay CHRONO S&G Steel 41 mm - Ref. 79363N

The first TUDOR chronograph, with a self-winding Manufacture Calibre, column wheel and vertical clutch is now available in an S&G version.

Since the presentation of TUDOR’s first chronograph in 1970, of the Oysterdate, the brand has always produced watches that are closely tied to the world of motorsports. In the same way, since 1954 TUDOR has been constantly improving its professional divers' watches. The daringly hybrid Black Bay Chrono S&G chronograph (S&G stands for Steel & Gold) combines this aquatic heritage, represented by the Black Bay family, with the queen of the racetrack, the chronograph, for a precious sporty-chic result with an undeniable touch of nostalgia.

THE SPIRIT OF LAND AND SEA

Remaining faithful to the Black Bay aesthetic, the Black Bay Chrono S&G model makes the famous "snowflake" hands - the signature of TUDOR divers' watches since 1969 - its own in a gold version refined for optimum readability against the domed matt-black dial. Its counters are hollowed and their champagne-colour creates optimum contrast. Following the TUDOR chronograph tradition, a date aperture is positioned at 6 o'clock.

The main Black Bay characteristics are retained, in a slim 41-millimetre steel case and equipped with yellow-gold pushers inspired by the very first generation of TUDOR chronographs. A fixed bezel in yellow gold with a black anodised aluminium insert and tachymetric scale completes the face of this elegant, sporty chronograph.

MANUFACTURE CHRONOGRAPH
CALIBRE MT5813

With a 70-hour power reserve, a silicon balance spring and Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute certification, the Manufacture chronograph Calibre MT5813 that drives the Black Bay Chrono S&G model is a high-performance movement. It was designed in the purest watchmaking tradition, with a column-wheel mechanism and vertical clutch. In keeping with the TUDOR philosophy of quality, it presents extraordinary robustness and reliability, guaranteed by an array of extreme tests applied to all TUDOR products.

Derived from the Manufacture chronograph calibre Breitling 01, with a high-precision regulating organ developed by TUDOR and dedicated finishes, this movement is the result of a lasting collaboration between the two brands. They have chosen to pool their expertise in the design and production of certain mechanical movements, which they use jointly.

BRACELET, JACQUARD OR BUND STRAP

The fabric strap is one of the signatures of TUDOR, which remains one of the first watch brands to offer it. Woven on 19th-century Jacquard looms by a 150-year-old family firm from the region of St-Etienne, its manufacturing quality and comfort on the wrist are unique. The Black Bay Chrono model presents a black strap, chosen by TUDOR and woven by the firm. The model is also available with a steel and yellow gold bracelet inspired by the folding riveted bracelets of TUDOR watches produced in the 1950's and 60's.

These were famous for having rivet heads for attaching the links, shown on the side of the bracelet as well as a stepped construction. These two aesthetic details are incorporated into the new model, integrating modern manufacturing methods using solid links. Finally, in a spirit of 1970's racing, the Black Bay Chrono offers a bund type option in brown aged leather with ecru stitching and a folding clasp.

THE ESSENCE OF BLACK BAY

Like other models in the Black Bay line, the Black Bay Chrono S&G model features a dial inspired by the TUDOR divers’ watches produced in the 1950's. It also adopts the characteristic angular hands known to collectors as "snowflake" that appeared in the brand’s 1969 catalogue. Finally, the large winding crown, characteristic of the first generation of TUDOR divers' watches, is also adopted in this model.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Black Bay line is the result of the subtle blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary watchmaking. Far from simply being an identical re-release of a classic, it brings together over 60 years of TUDOR divers' watches and yet remains firmly anchored in the present.

Whilst it is neo-vintage in conception, its manufacturing techniques, reliability, robustness and the quality of its finish are consistent with today's most rigorous requirements.

TUDOR – BLACK BAY Bronze BLUE Bucherer Edition

TUDORHeritage BLACK BAY Bronze BLUE Bucherer Edition

Bucherer is adding two more “B’s” to Black Bay Bronze. B for blue, the color used for those special edition watches made for B, as in Bucherer. This particular Heritage model, which harbors a Tudor caliber, has already attracted its share of aficionados.

Emblematic blues... Tudor has already been there. After all, as recently as 2015, the brand came out with its iconic Pelagos in deep and pure hues of that color that is such an integral part of its history.

Bronze and blue, all aboard

As for Bucherer, the strong connection to blue came in the nick of time. Indeed, in the run-up to its 130th birthday, one of the most prestigious names in watch and jewelry distribution in Switzerland (and elsewhere) launched a living and original gallery focusing on the color blue, Bucherer's corporate color, and developed partnerships with an impressive array of watch brands. These exclusive models are called the Blue Editions. They are part of a historic continuum, since Bucherer has always been able to rely on privileged ties to the brands it welcomes in its display windows.

Tudor has now added a model from its Heritage series to the incredible Blue Editions collection initiated by Bucherer, a model that is filled with references to its history and to the grand tradition of seafaring. The choice of materials alone makes this 43-millimeter timepiece a veritable call of the high seas: High-performance aluminum bronze, like that used in naval engineering, notably for all the submerged parts, like the propellers.

This bronze is not only an esthetic reference to the brasses used in ancient ships or for diving equipment, but it also quickly develops a subtle, homogeneous, and noble patina that will be unique for every wearer. It’s a watch that you acquire and then tame, as it were.

Traditional roots and values

Above all, however, this newborn Heritage Black Bay Bronze Blue is a device that measures time and exhibits traditional Tudor hues. It all began with the company founded by Hans Wilsdorf, whose idea of quality, precision, robustness and reliability attracted the French navy back in the 1950s. In the 1970s, the seamen started favoring the models with a blue dial and bezel.

There were also those square-shaped hands, which are deeply embedded in brand history. The other particular feature was the rather prominent winding crown, which recalls the famous reference 7924, released in 1958, a legendary watch that continues to whet the appetite of collectors and fans of Tudor timepieces.

The model was nicknamed “Big Crown,” and it was the first watch to be water- resistant to 200 meters. And finally, this Heritage Black Bay Bronze Blue of 2017 also exhibits hereditary Tudor traits, like the dial and the domed crystal. Add to that some new and subtle elements, for instance, the vigorous chamfering of the lugs with their visible pin holes.

 COSC-certified in-house caliber

This Heritage Black Bay Bronze Blue is powered by the mechanical caliber MT5601, an iteration of the caliber developed by the company’s watchmakers and released in 2015. No one at the time thought that Tudor would be developing a caliber designed and manufactured in-house.

This manually-wound movement beats at 4 Hertz – or 28,800 vph – and is regulated by an oscillator with variable inertia and a silicon balance spring. It has a power reserve of 70 hours. And, finally, its accuracy is guaranteed by a series of tests performed over a period of fifteen days by the notorious Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

Homage to a heritage

Tudor revived the Heritage line in 2010 with the launch of the Chrono model, a reinterpretation of its first chronograph from the 1970s. An interesting creative approach was used to design this series: Rather than replicate the original watches, the past was just hinted at in little bits using the most emblematic elements of the company history. The models, when put in the spotlight, seem to have survived all the temporal clashes between the past, present, and future, and now boast an amazing contemporary look. And what an excellent prospect, one that is most representative of the neo-vintage trend in watchmaking!

For Bucherer, this Heritage Black Bay Bronze Blue is an opportunity to rediscover the Tudor diving watches.
