Chinese New Year will be celebrated on January 25, 2020 marking the start of the year of the rat. The Chinese Zodiac, also known as Sheng Xiao, is represented by 12 animals. The first animal in the zodiac is the “Rat”, a symbol of wealth and surplus. Those born under the influence of this sign of the rat are natural leaders, highly intelligent and ambitious.

As in previous years, Perrelet celebrates the Chinese New Year with a timepiece from its Turbine collection dedicated to the zodiac animal of 2020.

“Turbine Rat” is the result of this process and is characterised by Perrelet’s iconic Turbine Technology, which was introduced to the market just ten years ago. Since then, it has become one of the undisputed symbols of the brand along with the Double Rotor. Housed in a 44mm steel case treated with black PVD and water-resistance of 50m, “Turbine Rat” features an intriguing dial. Protected by a sapphire crystal, the animated dial is as eye-catching as it is hypnotising.

One of the most distinctive features of this new model is the Turbine. The blades, made from anodised aluminium, are engraved with the 12 animals of the Chinese horoscope along with their respective Chinese ideogram. As the star of 2020, the rat is highlighted on the blade at 3 o’clock in an intense shade of red.

The fascinating aspect of the Turbine is its spontaneous rotation. The five tungsten counterweights applied under the blades of the turbine – which have to be perfectly balanced during assembly – allow even the slightest movement of the wrist to set the Turbine in motion.

While the Turbine completes its rotations, another image of a stylised golden rat appears on the lower dial against a bright red background.

The hours, minutes and seconds are placed on the black flange. The Arabic numerals at 15-minute intervals and the hour markers are treated with black Super-LumiNova as are the hour and minute hands. In keeping with the colour scheme of the dial, the central seconds hand is also red.

“Turbine Rat” is equipped with calibre P-331, an automatic in-house movement providing 42 hours of autonomy. The sapphire crystal caseback allows a view of the movement with its bridges decorated with Côtes de Genève.

The timepiece comes with a black rubber strap embellished with the brand’s logo and a folding buckle in black PVD-coated steel. This new creation is limited to 100 pieces.

The Swiss watchmaker Perrelet stands out through the originality of its dial enlivened by the Double Rotor
function patented in 1995 that has become a signature feature. This particular model now admirably
embodies its expertise in highlighting both watchmaking techniques and artistic crafts.

Launched last year in black or white dial versions, the Double Rotor Amytis appears clothed in delicate
shades such as ivory or blue.

This watch with its 36.5 mm-diameter case is equipped with Manufacture Caliber P-181-H, an automatic Double Rotor movement. One of its twin oscillating weights is visible on the dial side, while the rotation of the perfectly synchronized rotors drives the barrels and ensures more efficient winding.

The dial-side oscillating weight is an authentic work of art involving several artisan-style skills. The finely crafted petals and leaves are expertly cut out, rhodium-plated, sandblasted and decorated with precious materials such as diamonds (16 totaling 0.067cts) and mother-of-pearl, thereby endowing this rotor – an important component of automatic movements – with great originality.

The oscillating weight thus appears to dance gracefully across the dial in step with wrist movements. The two variations both feature delicate pastel shades. The sky blue version features a sunburst blue dial graced with a contrasting white mother-of-pearl half-moon along with yellow Roman numerals converging towards the center and lending an original touch of character; while the beauty of the version with an ivory-toned strap is magnified by a white mother-of-pearl applique against a light blue background bearing violet blue Roman numerals.

The Diamond Flower Amytis thereby pays fresh tribute to Perrelet’s Double Rotor and appears fitted with white or blue alligator straps or a steel bracelet depending on the dial color, secured by a steel folding clasp.

In adopting the state-of-the-art Alternance 10 (A10) caliber, entirely produced within the group to which it belongs, the Perrelet brand has taken a decisive step on the path towards autonomous production - the ultimate goal being to equip its entire range with Manufacture-made movements.

Perrelet, a pioneer of mechanical watchmaking, is a Swiss brand specializing in the creation of automatic watches. Since 2004 it has belonged to the Spanish entrepreneur Miguel Rodriguez, who also owns the Festina group. The brand is thus in a prime position to benefit from the group’s industrial infrastructure thanks to the contribution of sister companies such as Soprod, IMM Ineltec, MHVJ and Astral, and thus have access to exclusive automatic movements
of superior quality.

“Today more than ever, having in house means of developing and producing horological specialties represents a great opportunity. Production autonomy is an extremely important issue and an aspect that enables us to remain in the avant-garde of our field. Perrelet - Caliber A10

Stemming from several years of research and development, the A10 caliber is now produced entirely within the group to which Perrelet belongs, including its new escapement featuring optimized efficiency, and the balance-spring. The automatic 11 ½’’’ movement, beating at 28,800 vph, is a robust and reliable caliber that has earned Chronofiable* certification and which may, on request, also benefit from COSC chronometer certification. It comes in several variations - three hands plus date, three hands with visible balance, along with skeletonized models. They also boast a broad range of additional functions which to date includes Large Dates, Dual Time-Zone with day-night indicator, Power Reserve, 24-hour indicator, Chronograph and Small Seconds. The A10 also incorporates custom-made complications and in particular Perrelet’s signature Double Rotor modules.

The A10 calibers with integrated Double Rotor are produced exclusively by Perrelet, which holds the patent for this system. Among the watches in the collection, the first Perrelet watch equipped with the new movement is the Peripheral Double Rotor, the latest of the Double Rotor models. A series of personalized finishes further enhance the 100% Manufacture-made movement. The upper rotor, which rotates around the periphery of the movement, features three openings providing an opportunity to admire its oscillations. The open worked lower rotor provides a broader view of the brand’s distinctive “tapestry” motif adorning the bridges. It is adorned with the P signature and a Côtes de Genève motif.

This step heralded the start of what is set to be a fastpaced integration process. Alternance 10 will equip all the new models launched in 2012, and will in due course replace all the other calibers used by the House.

Perrelet is continuing to write new chapters in its own history and in that of watchmaking in general, as the producer of watches with fully Manufacture-made movements, enhanced by dedicated Fine Watchmaking finishes.
