In 2020, Maurice Lacroix was named the Official Timekeeper of Mahindra Racing, a founding team in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. It’s a dynamic sport, continuously changing as technology evolves. Today, the all-electric single seater cars race at speeds touching 320 km/h and are capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in sub 3 seconds. While Maurice Lacroix admires Mahindra Racing for its success on the track, manifest with 23 podiums and 5 wins to date, it also applauds the team’s environmental stance. Indeed, the race team actively promotes EV technology as a means of making the skies cleaner and addressing the impact of climate change. Last year, the Swiss watch brand unveiled its inaugural AIKON #tide model, made from ocean-bound upcycled plastic. It takes 17 plastic bottles to make one AIKON #tide and its user-friendly packaging, which means 17 fewer bottles polluting the ocean. The AIKON #tide shares the same attributes as other members of the AIKON family, namely Swiss quality, precision timekeeping, urban styling and high perceived value. By recovering plastic bottles from the ocean, Maurice Lacroix has made the world a little cleaner and a little better for everyone.

Now, the two environmentally-aware firms have joined forces, culminating in the release of a new watch, the AIKON #tide Mahindra, dressed in the race team’s colours and featuring a dial adorned with the team logo. Perpetuating the #tide story, this new model is again made from ocean-bound upcycled plastic. It features a black dial with a matching 40mm case. The bezel is executed in red and the black rubber strap sports Maurice Lacroix’s ‘M’ logo, also in a vibrant shade of red. In addition, the watch is supplied with a second strap, this time in red rubber with black accents. Equipped with the Maison’s Easy Strap Exchange system, it is simple to switch one strap for another without the need for tools.

A few weeks ago, Maurice Lacroix unveiled a ground-breaking new watch, the AIKON #tide. Sharing the same attributes as other members of the AIKON family, these new models are formed of ocean-bound upcycled plastic, an undisclosed formula and glass fibre.

The resultant composite material is twice as hard as standard plastic, five times more resistant and has a carbon footprint significantly less than the production of virgin PET. The bezel, case, case back, crown, end-piece and buckle are all made from this composite material. It takes 17 bottles to make one watch and its tailor made packaging which means 17 fewer bottles polluting the ocean.

The AIKON Automatic Chronograph Sprint plays with colours and textures, endowing the model with a very different appearance to its siblings. However, die-hard fans of the AIKON can relax, this new model still features the AIKON’s distinctive six arms straddling the bezel, the M-logo on its strap and the model’s urban styling. Put simply, the new model is fresh and sporty but respects the legend.

For the first time, the AIKON is presented in a 44mm stainless steel case dressed in matte black DLC. This coating was selected for its impressive wear characteristics and chemical resistance. In contrast, the six arms spanning the bezel are delivered in a gleaming gunmetal finish. By juxtaposing different colours and textures, the AIKON Automatic Chronograph Sprint exhibits a sumptuous appearance.

Also presented in gunmetal grey, the surface of the dial is sunray-brushed and embossed with a square pattern. The facetted hour and minute hands are lined with Super-LumiNova, aiding legibility in dim light. They converse with the indexes, once again, presented in gunmetal grey. Black counters are positioned at 6 and 12 o’clock and combine opaline and snailed detail. The dial incorporates a refreshing splash of colour with the small seconds indication at 9 o’clock presented in a light shade of blue. The addition of the snailed detail results in the subdial appearing metallic, readily gleaming with the mere suggestion of light. Lastly, the central chronograph seconds hand is also presented in blue, further enlivening the appearance of the display.

The AIKON Automatic Chronograph Sprint upholds the AIKON’s reputation for ergonomic design, delivering impressive levels of wearer comfort. The watch is presented on a light blue strap made of FKM rubber, a first for the AIKON. This particular grade of rubber delivers superior flexibility to regular rubber, augmenting wearer comfort. In addition, FKM rubber offers greater wear-resistance and the colour is less susceptible to fading. The strap incorporates the company’s ‘M’ logo and is paired with a sandblasted black DLC pin buckle.
 
Consistent with traditional Swiss watchmaking, the movement is embellished with circular graining and incorporates vertical Côtes de Genève motif on the bridges and rotor.

With its 44 mm diameter and natural thickness, the AIKON Automatic Chronograph has a strong and visible presence on the wrist. Matching that of its automatic chronograph calibre, which is water- resistant to 20 Bar, or 200 metres. This design creates the AIKON’s exceptional personality, which expresses itself through the values of modern masculinity, and in the case of its automatic chronograph, through those of urban dynamism.

TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

Titanium is 50% lighter than steel, a fact which is reflected in the weightlessness of this new version, and in its entirely new feel on the wrist. Titanium also has a darker grey colour, with a more intense matte finish, which enhance its masculine feel even more.

It is also extremely resistant to abrasion, which makes the satin finish, that runs through the entire AIKON Automatic Chronograph Titanium, including the case and bracelet, a true and even more complex work of art and precision. Finally, with a water resistance up to 200 m, this timepiece is also rustproof, the perfect invitation to dive in.

CONTRASTS

Its dark grey colour undoubtedly inspired the choice of a dial in the same chromatic style. The surface is embossed with the iconic squared pattern, typical of the AIKON Automatic Chronograph. It features the emblematic Gunmetal grey colour, sunray-brushed to provide infinite reflections.
