Eberhard & Co. pays tribute to the sporting spirit of the historic Italian brand with a new Limited Edition chronograph. This is the coming together of two powerhouses of innovation built on tradition, with the objective of maximum performance.

Certain brands know how to mix technology with passion, performance with emotion. The “Quadrifoglio Verde” Chronograph from Eberhard & Co. boasts a generous 43mm diameter steel case housing the automatic movement which animates three counters. Of these, the small seconds’ catches the eye first: its reading is given by a hand shaped as the triangular clover emblem. The tachymeter scale surrounding the deep black dial, inspired by the readability of Alfa Romeo’s dashboard instruments, neatly combines all the tradition of Eberhard & Co.’s chronographs with an automotive imprint. The satin-finished bezel and buttons contribute to the stylish balance of the case, which appears sporting and elegant in equal measure.

Only a lucky few individuals will have the chance to own one of the specimens available: the Limited Edition consists of just 250 pieces and will be on sale exclusively at Eberhard & Co.’s authorised dealers. The hunt for the mythical lucky charm begins today.

The transition from champion to legend

There are some people in the history of sport that cannot be defined merely as ‘champions’. When they exceed the limits set by their time and enter the superhuman ‘Hall of Fame’ of those who have broken all barriers by crossing the line of the inconceivable, it is then that they undergo the natural progression that turns them into legends.

Tazio Nuvolari, the champion driver who dominated the decades between 1920 and the late forties, is quite obviously such a sportsman.

When, almost 30 years ago, Eberhard & Co. decided to celebrate his enterprises by creating a collection that bears his name, the figure of Tazio had become shrouded by the mists of time and all that had happened in the world of motoring since his era. It is also because of the efforts of the famous Swiss Maison and the success of the ‘Tazio Nuvolari’ collection that this mist has lifted. In the past few decades, the impetuous, at times overbearing personality of a man who made his passion for sport a reason for living, placing it above all else, even above himself and those closest to him, has been brought to light. His story has inspired a great number of initiatives; books have been written, songs have been dedicated to him, and the great old-timers event that bears his name brings hundreds of fans from all over the world to his homeland every year. All this has ensured that the fame he deserves, that of being the greatest racing driver ever, lives on today.

The Tazio Nuvolari collection mainly consists of sports watches, and many versions have been added to it over the years. Some of these have been inspired by great victories or enterprises realized by the champion. The latest, Nuvolari Legend, seeks to celebrate the essence of the man and of the sportsman, consecrating him among those who will never be forgotten.

Nuvolari Legend is an automatic timepiece with a steel case, available in two sizes: 39.5 mm and 43 mm in the Grande Taille version. The model is water resistant down to a depth of 30m. and features a black dial with luminescent Arabic numerals, a minutes counter at 12 o’clock, a hours counter at 6 o’clock and a spiral tachometer scale in km/hr in the centre.

The movement can be admired through the transparent sapphire crystal base, which is secured by eight screws, decorated with a ‘chessboard’ image designed to look like the race-start flag, and customised with the historic stylised Alfa Romeo Type 12C in which the great driver obtained many victories.

The dial and two-way rotating bezel with ceramic insert and luminescent indices are also in black. The screwed case back is uniquely customised, featuring a stylised hemisphere with time zones and the engraved name of the model. 130 chimes that mark the history of Eberhard & Co., but well over 130 snapshots that immortalise the values and creations which throughout the years since 1887 – when the company was founded by Georges-Lucien Eberhard in La Chaux-de-Fonds – have made up the DNA of the Swiss watchmakers whose name has become synonymous with tradition, constant research and innovation. 130 years of special passion for an art made up of charm and precision, 130 years of uninterrupted history of taking up new challenges, 130 years of watches with timeless personality. Eberhard & Co. has always made these values the sole benchmark for the creation of its models, which are innovative yet at the same time able to inherit the richness of a renowned history.

The success of Eberhard & Co.’s creations spans the entire twentieth century, enabling it to file numerous patents which have consolidated its position among the aristocracy of luxury Swiss watchmaking. This innovative spirit has found expression in precious timepieces with high technical content which have marked important stages of development, particularly of the chronograph, among other timepieces.

1887-2017 

The hours have become years and the years successes.

1894 saw the creation of a pocket watch with an innovative patented setting system. 1905 was the year for a special watch with a patented new system for reading the hours and minutes. 1919 saw the launch of the era’s most advanced single button wrist chronograph, while 1921 produced a watch with a special patented device - “Calotte Patrouille” – protecting the movement from dust and moisture. In 1935 the Maison unveiled an unprecedented chronograph with two buttons for stop and restart without resetting, then in 1939 the “rattrapante”, or split-seconds, chronograph made its appearance, followed by the Extra-fort chronograph in the early 1940s.

1942 was the year of the “Magini System”, a split-seconds chronograph that was one of the protagonists of the Italian-Japanese raid during World War II, flying from Rome to Tokyo and back. The ’50s were the setting for the Scafograf diving collection, whose 300 model was re-released in 2016 to great success, receiving several awards including the “Sport Watch Award” at the prestigious Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The Sixties saw the Contograf become an emblem of its time thanks to its innovative features, in the true style of a Maison that is always ahead of its time.

Since the early decades of the last century, officers of the Italian Royal Navy have worn Eberhard & Co.  chronographs on their wrists, while the Maison’s “Frecce Tricolori” Chronomaster has accompanied the flights of the world’s most famous aerobatic team since 1984. This overview would not of course be complete without the collection dedicated to the legendary motor racing champion Tazio Nuvolari, the great driver who was never without his Eberhard pocket watch.

In recent times, the range has been enhanced with the 8 JOURS which, by means of a special device patented by Eberhard & Co., only needs winding once a week, and the Extra-fort, a re-interpretation of a chronograph that has been an iconic collection since the Forties.

And last but not least, for the new millennium the Maison revolutionised the way we tell the time with the Chrono 4 (patented - registered design), the first and only chronograph in the history of watchmaking with four aligned counters, a veritable icon of the brand today. Never before had the minutes, hours, 24 hours and small seconds been arranged horizontally in a linear progression. Never before had telling the time proved to be so remarkably natural. A milestone of excellence, achieved thanks to the passion and commitment put into creating a mechanism that is unique for the complexity and difficulty of its construction.

This 2016 year, from 5 - 8 May, another memorable event has been added to Eberhard & Co.’s rich programme of sponsorships in the world of vintage cars: the renowned Targa Florio, which has celebrated its 100th edition and at which the watchmaker has been the Official Timekeeper and presented a chronograph especially created for the competitors in this race.

Set up in 1906 through the enlightened genius and entrepreneurial spirit of Vincenzo Florio - a highly cultured man enamoured of his native land - the “world’s oldest and most famous” automobile race, an icon of Italy and of Sicily in particular, which has left its mark on the history of motor sports, looked proudly towards the future through a four-in-one event: Targa Florio Rally, Targa Florio Historic Rally, Targa Florio Classica and Targa Florio Historic Speed.

Eberhard & Co. has come up with the Champion V Targa Florio watch to celebrate the race’s Centenary. Being a sports chronograph, it is ideal for all those who face the trials of life and their passions with pluck and determination. It has been given to all participants (1 per crew) and all competitors had the chance to purchase a second watch at a special price. Elegant, sophisticated and sporty, Champion V is a mechanical, self-winding chronograph with two counters, one for the minutes and one for the hours, where style and technology merge in a highly versatile equilibrium.

The dial of the special edition Targa Florio is customised with the logo of the 100th edition and its style and colours are evocative of motor races. Waterproof at 50 m, it has a 42.80 mm steel caseback with convex sapphire glass, a caseback fixed with 6 screws and enhanced by polished satin finishes, a steel bezel with a circular aluminium insert that has been treated with anodic oxidation and it comes with a leather strap with a customised “E&Co.” buckle.

Besides the race participants, some Champion V Targa Florio chronographs has also been given to selected celebrities that have accepted the invitation to be present at the anniversary.

“We are pleased to celebrate 100 glorious editions with the Targa Florio”, declared Mario Peserico – General Manager of Eberhard & Co. “The perfect union between the world of vintage cars and our watches is traditionally represented by the Tazio Nuvolari collection, but in this case, due to the exceptional nature of the event, we decided to do something special and to match a different model to this race, a more sporty model with the evocative name Champion V, dedicating it to all past, present and future champions taking part in the race.”

The Targa Florio Classic winners are Giovanni Moceri and Daniele Bonetti on FIAT 508 C (1939), followed by Andrea Vesco and Andrea Guerini on FIAT 508 S BALILLA SPORT (1934). Mario Passanante and Anna Maria Pisciotta ranked third on their FIAT 1100 103 E/ 1955 and on the fourth position we find Francesco and Giuseppe Di Pietra on FIAT 508 C (1938), the two pilots of the Classicteam Eberhard, the scuderia that the Maison supports in all the vintage car races and exhibitions.

The idea of creating an Eberhard & Co. watch for Moreschi was inspired by the long-standing and deep-rooted bond of friendship and mutual respect between the two companies: indeed, the watchmaker’s timepiece owned by Mario Moreschi, the company’s founder and grandfather of the current proprietor, dates back to 1949.

The “time-only” mechanical self-winding watch uniquely expresses Eberhard & Co.’s predilection for elegance and harmony. It has a 40 mm case and a beige dial with “soleil” finish.

The colour choice comes from the desire to evoke the warm tones of the finest leather.

The dial is customised with the symbolic logo of the company for which it was created, positioned at twelve o'clock, two men's shoes that come together to form the brand’s identifying M.

The dark brown ostrich leather strap with hand-sewn beige stitching was specifically designed by Moreschi and matches the dial perfectly. The watch has a screw-down crown, curved sapphire glass and is water resistant to 50 metres.

After being “unveiled” for the very first time at the international watch-making fair in Basel, the model, in a limited edition of 200 pieces, was officially presented at the Milan Men’s Fashion Week (17 - 21 June) during a dedicated event in Milan on Monday 20 June, at Pisa Orologeria.
